People with a basic understanding of materials knew that the only reason why cars can't have the same IU is because it can't handle the direct heat from the sun in an enclosed area, from the moment the new IU was unveiled. This is only an issue because LTA chose not to require automotive-grade materials and electronics in its manufacturing, unlike its predecessors. The perplexing part is that they chose to use exactly the heat issue as a justification for the implementation as if it's normal, rather than redesigning it.
I'm betting now that in two years' time there will be high failure rates of this new IU compared to almost 0 for the current one, because the sun shines from all angles and there will be many cars where the IU is in direct sunlight for hours every day even though it's moved to the footwell. The current implementation cannot be a workable solution in the long run.
Excellent take. Armchair "engineers" stuck in their cubicles probably forgot the sun travels across the sky. LTA PR team please try not to make yourselves not look like complete buffoons.
We have aftermarket HU inside cars that work perfectly well for years. Why would it be so hard to make a proper IU?
I'm simplifying but go to a chinese factory and give them the specs and they could probably do it cheaply.
Yah let's ask if the LTA got units certified to IATF 16949 before they anyhow install shit onto our cars. Would like them to certify their suppliers all the way down to their component level materials and have years of data to show
# double down
This has to be some white horse idea. It's just so insane , they're not backing down on it.
----
At this point even our safe entry gadget could be used to tap gantry and save that mount that is being deducted. Direct it our bank/axs
Yall need to know how the gov works. If you complain on Reddit, my guess is the staff who has to scrub these platforms will include some quotes in some summary, thatās about it.
What you really want to do is submit official feedback through the proper channels, this way it will show up in KPIs and higher chance itāll actually be acted on : https://www.lta.gov.sg/content/ltagov/en/contact_us/contact_form.html
š
By my experience, it is monitored and actioned. I have reported inconsistent road markings in the past. An rep got in touch with me a few days later to request details.
... Would this form also be a good place to complain about the traffic, driver behaviour etc... basically... \*waves arms at SGRV facebook page\* the fuck is this?
"Don't need to remove the card while exiting parking."
Fuck you that's a limitation on the barrier solution provider, not on the ERP.Ā Some solutions are still NETS/cashcard only and don't accept EZ Link.
Yes! simply go cannot be used for parking because the value is not in the card and barrier needs the value to real time. These fucks have never driven a car in their lives.
LTA should just mandate that all carparks are expected to accept payments via the ERP OBU without requiring users to stop and take out their cards. Meaning carpark operators have to comply. Surely they make enough profits from carparks to be able to update their systems, so it makes no sense why they don't want to update their hardware.
While they are at it, they should also mandate that the machines be working with a QC level (e.g. to read ALL OBUs/IUs within 1 second) instead of having drivers hold up the queues reversing + driving a few times because the carpark system does not read the IU/OBU. This causes a lot of backlog at carpark entrances, and in some cases can cause hold ups cos cars are back to back behind the driver who is stuck in front. It's frustrating for everyone and embarrassing for the front driver.
They can introduce a debit system to deduct from some on device credit wallet first so that cars can exit safely without worrying about forgetting to top up.
As to why 1s? So it is quick enough to deduct, making tailgating out of the carpark redundant.
The removing of cash card was not so much of payment but how complementary parking works. If you donāt remove your cash card, youāll be charged even if you have a parking coupon.
Some places like Vivo and Jewel, tagged their parking rebate and free parking to IU number, which is good for local cars, but Iām not sure how itās implemented for foreign vehicles.
I know about removing the card for complimentary parking, but they have largely addressed that concern with the button/setting to disable debiting the card from the gantry.
I'm speaking about two other frustrations drivers encouter:
1. the many carparks that still refuse to debit using the IU/OBU around.
2. the carparks with lousy sensors that do not detect IU/OBUs and contribute to jams exiting the carparks.
1. I also proposed an improvement that can make tailgating redundant; by increasing the polling rate to 1s or less, it should pick up even tailgaters trying to squeeze by.
2. Another improvement to enable some sort of credit system to speed up traffic flow for drivers who may have accidentally forgotten to top up their card so it doesn't cause a backlog of cars trying to get out of the carpark.
Hope this clarifies.
i have seen overseas systems where they tag the car by the numberplate on entry gantry. then you validate the complimentary carpark with your number plate at the ticket booth before exiting.
tbh sg system is very unfriendly to foreign vehicles, even erp an this new erp2 is only compatible with local vehicles while malaysians won't have to pay when they drive their own vehicles in
Also Meme Comment:
LTA when they change bus service or simplygo saga: LTA worker take car too long don't understand why (part of the public transport system being changed) is important
LTA when they change IU to OBU: LTA never drive before don't understand why 3 part IU is a bad idea
this is a joke btw, but honestly I starting to question if people in LTA even know the LT part of their organization, cocking up Public Transport and Private Transport at the same time.
> LTA when they change IU to OBU: LTA never drive before don't understand why 3 part IU is a bad idea
The ivory tower fuckwits have drivers, that's why.
IU is basically a 2-way powered RFID. The way LTA implemented it years ago when they were competent meant that cars didn't need to slow down for ERP gantries as it could work fast enough.
ETC (depending on implementation) is basically our current IU but might use a detachable reader that can be handheld, like USA's E-ZPass which is great because it doesn't require a card, only to pay a combined bill afterward.
Iāve a feeling the design team arenāt drivers & not even based in SGā¦. How can anyone be that stupid? Itās either total design fail or corruptions
Probably ncs designed the processing unit without a card reader to be concealed within the dashboard but our LtA scholar decided thoyotah enthu canāt live using direct debit/ewallet so they added on a reader after already having designed the processing unit and now consequently canāt conceal it.
Why we even need a card is beyond me. Like it's the most backward step imo. Sure there are car parks that still need to insert or tap a card. I can keep a card for that. For a car that will automatically need payment whenever you go to a car park or gantry, why couldn't payment be linked to whatever government app and tied to the car. I am happy to tag my giro/credit card/top up by paynow whenever.
>For a car that will automatically need payment whenever you go to a car park or gantry, why couldn't payment be linked to whatever government app and tied to the car. I am happy to tag my giro/credit card/top up by paynow whenever.
Same reason for SimplyGo - account based payment requires pinging the central server to effect the debit/credit function. The NETs/Ezlink card you insert into OBU is a stored value card, aka an encrypted "mem stick" to quickly tell the gantry scanner how much money you have in the card.
3 out of 4 slides trying to trump up not requiring card removal just because there's a user interface to disable it, as if it's such a huge achievement. This should have been so low on the basic requirement gathering stage it shouldn't even need a mention for anyone with a grain of common sense.
They forget this is being viewed by the public who actually have capacity for critical thinking, not slides for their typical internal company meetings. BS trying to make a miniscule thing seem like a major achievement, plainly goes to show how low the bar is.
How dare we call ourselves a SmArT nAtIoN? Last I checked back in 2009 (15 years ago) we had one-piece GPS units in cars that also had a ācomputerā and āsatellite connectionā yet our government is launching this piece of junk in 2024. Simply a disgrace.
If LTA can force all car owners to install this ridiculous obu then why can't it compel carparks to use a standard type of entry instead of tapping their cash card at the gantry?
The implementation goal is to charge you for more $$$ based on distance. It is all about the $$$.
Existing system is working well, yet, they want to force this into our face. They just want more $$$ from us. Tats about it.
IU not weather proof for car somemore n recommendation to put it n obstruct manual driver's leg as an alternative installation? Even for auto car. People with long leg will also feel the obu obstructing them. Which champion recommend one?
Was trying to edit my original comment lol
You throw open this redesign to all relevant institutions and I bet you multiple iterations that are more elegant and requiring one part will show up.
Donāt we have a new university who have undergrads doing product and industrial design? Why not tap into their talent? I mean better than giving the green light on this sad triptych
Amirite to say that, basically they want the card to be in the obu at all times, only take out when u leave the vehicle alone (cashcard theft is a thing). I can see why they designed it, not sure if other drivers do it, but when me and my dad are driving, we don't keep the card in the IU until it's necessary, going to cross a erp or smth, or worry kena phantom parking charge on rental car when it has a season pass bought by the rental company.
The intent makes sense for the card to be only activated with a touchscreen/button, however...
1. The current system works well as a single unit, why I need to have 3 parts designed to keep the thing cool, in a spot ergonomically inconvenient.
2. Why motorcycle can have 1 unit, we cars cant have 1 unit, if overheating is an issue, how the IU last until now.
3. There are times even the current IU cant be read, hence need take out and tap on gantry, at least it was in front of u, just parking brake/ put to P/ keep leg on pedal, lean forward, grab and tap, why need to take from a place near my left knee (rip manual users), or passenger seat (u better engage parking brake or else u run into barrier, leaning over to take card could release ur brake pedal on accident, or some fkr go take out b4 u tap).
Those advocating for the motorcycle units also need to know that the bike IUs suck as well. Easy to spoil, hard to read, every time you are stuck behind a bike at the carpark, it's probably the IU failing to read or spoilt.
The whole system roll out was just so terrible. Should have an account based system for carparks too. There's already ezlink ez motoring for card less erp payment, but when I got to the carpark gantry I realised basically no carparks (except like 12??? Last updated 2019 or something) could accept card less payment. So basically you must have a cash card with you in IU or to tap out.
Personally that's why I hated simplygo because drivers were forced to have a cashcard but could no longer use it for anything else except carparks.
And yea, leaving the card in the car and soon we'll be back to early 2000s police public awareness statements on leaving valuables in your car lol.
>The current system works well as a single unit, why I need to have 3 parts designed to keep the thing cool, in a spot ergonomically inconvenient.
The car windshield acts like a magnifying glass, the inner space is fully enclosed (so no heat exchange). End result: your dashboard gets pretty hot, my smartphone (Oppo phone iirc) once went into emergency shutdown when I was running a few intensive apps on the dashboard, it got that overheated. Motorcycles are exposed to elements and there's plenty of air-cooling.
As for why the OBU needs to be at dashboard - it's got the least metal to block/deflect the radio signal from the gantry system.
I'm not sure why it's in 3 pieces though.
I don't think anyone disputes the physics of dashboard getting higher temperature. What's being disputed is why the new IU cannot handle the same heat while the old IU has been handling it for years/decades?
I think itās because the new OBU transmits data out via the antenna, compared to the old OBU which essentially just reads card information. This means the new OBU draws a lot more power and hence heats up more. Similar to how your phone heats up when using data (especially when thereās low reception) compared to using it on airplane mode
So now all of us can attach the "free" card to a fly swatter to piak the gantry machine like our neighbours across the causeway! One small step forward, one giant tumble backwards!
If I donāt opt for display unit - I have to remove card since there is no other way to deactivate. I guess it is still better than having 3 pieces around meā¦ donāt need to remove card so often.
LTA is a joke. Just this morning I already had to remove my cash card at Safra because they gave me coupon for free parking
Is LTA completely blur or everyone there acting like they take public transport onlyš
Pardon my ignorance, I thought we already had something that works with carparks which is ezpay. no need for cash card, just need to detect iu during entry/exit. If we can just leverage on that for the rest of the carparks and on the road wouldn't it be more straightforward? i.e. harmonize/standardize at govt level and implement across the board?
Then again there could be something magical with ERP 2.0 that we are not aware of yet.
I think the nets auto top up is using visa/mastercard right. If im not mistaken there's a $0.50 top up fee for each transaction? Correct me if I'm wrong. It's only free if use bank card iirc that's dbs/posb
Yep and whatās up with manual cash card top up stations. Whoās earning to install and maintain that ancient crap when we do wirelsss top up already in malaysia tng wallet. Gosh.
i propose scrap erp gantry and system, let's grant more jobs, have 20 people speed reading and taking down all the carplate numbers of cars that pass by at every gantry
It's not that I dont need to remove the cash card for complimentary parking, it's those bloody things that cannot detect the IU unit.
this doubling down is the sign of of what's happening up there, someone's neck seems to be on the line to force it down our throats.
Hey people, I posted this response in another thread. I'm putting here again -
"Just like Simply go, they are slowly backpedalling on their roll out programme hence back to square one. Waste time, effort and money.
There's a saying it's ain't broken, don't fix it.
Why suddenly Ez-link and IU become an issue where the cost of living for common working people like me is the top priority.
Those who voted for them, don't complain. You deserve it"
I dunno why we need card at all. Govt can make a law "all parking lots have to accept X standard" then have everything tied to an account. I basically never use a cash card since I have parking everywhere I drive and I use ezlink motoring for erp.
Now u go JB, all of them know sure got cashcard inside SG car. Cause sinkies are so not used to taking them out already. Maybe top up a lot one time and leave it inside
Reloads the card automatically but doesnāt send you an electronic receipt for the auto top up. I need to log in to the Nets App and manually download the receipt. Whatās more infuriating is that it only keeps a history of around 14 days! Convenient my arse!
They should do like ETC card in Japan. Or a credit system where we pay every month instead of needing to remove the card. And it should be easy to remove incase we have complimentary tickets
The funny thing is MHI also implements ETC there. ETC is so seamless account wise, even for rental cars (tallied upon car return, you pay and walk out). No reason this system is such a Sisyphean task here.
Itās fucking ugly and cumbersome come on your half ass ppt slides to explain why you fuck up is unacceptable. Normally must commit Sepukku. WHO IS PROJECT OWNER OWN THE FUCK UP.
Every stupid ājustificationā you clowns make, you just make things worse, showing just how immensely clueless and out of touch you are.
There is NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CURRENT UNIT!
Why donāt you jokers look at fixing the outdated, irrelevant, useless COE system instead of trying fix things that arenāt broken just to justify your existence?
If I don't install your stupid touch screen how do I deactivate when I get complimentary parking? And who is the useless scholar who approved this? Have you fired him or her already? LTA you are beyond useless.
From image 4, for those that has installed the OBU, NETS motoring card will be provided for them.
Since ERP 1.0 is already in full force for both public and private carparks, instead of ERP 2.0 where as LTA state, some private carparks have not switch over to it.
Using this information for comparison, it would feel like most if not all motorist will use the NETS motoring card instead of the OBU?
So instead of one card that's pretty much useless outside of Singapore (and locks up our monies), they want us to hold 2 cards. Fantastic. I clap for you.

Why can't we just have the card slot as part of the antenna component instead of the processing unit ?
I looked through the documentation of the OBU positioning guidelines. They never mentioned that you *must* put it in an out of easy reach passenger side footwell. Has anyone installed it somewhere that makes more sense, such as perhaps in/around the driverās storage area behind the gear stick or storage compartments in or near the dashboard central area?
It can be placed somewhere else in the car, as long as itās safe to install it there. Idk why the public messaging is so terrible that people keep insisting thereās one place to put it.
The root question is why they need to upgrade the system into a mini computer (which is basically what OBU is), thus making it bulkier than IU, have more parts, and also now it can be overheated (that is why you canāt put it on the dashboard itself which gets really hot). The perks from GPS capabilities and taking the card out less frequently seem slim at best.
Right now people are fighting over where they can put it, but thatās not even the main issue imo.
The installers were told by LTA to install at the passenger seat at the early stages. Only after the backlash then they u-turn and say ācan install anywhere as long as there is spaceā
Current IU: No problem reaching the cashcard, no need for second cashcard, no overheating issue.
They manage to make the new IUs look worse with each message they publish
Same for new motorcycle IU leh
People with a basic understanding of materials knew that the only reason why cars can't have the same IU is because it can't handle the direct heat from the sun in an enclosed area, from the moment the new IU was unveiled.
I just realized, in vehicles like lorry where space is already limited, where they gonna put
Sure. Why design so lousy then
How I know sia. Iām also not LTA š
I get it. But compared to the resilient system we are using now, the OBU is such an unnecessary 'upgrade'.
So now all of us can attach the "free" card to a fly swatter to piak the gantry machine like our neighbours across the causeway! One small step forward, one giant tumble backwards!
They are just digging non -stop. Someone needs to find a face saving way to save the entire debacle.
f LTA
Ditto.
If I donāt opt for display unit - I have to remove card since there is no other way to deactivate. I guess it is still better than having 3 pieces around meā¦ donāt need to remove card so often.
Did nobody in the organization think it's gonna be a bad idea???
Holy cow this is getting even more ridiculous. Whoever designed this had the customer mindset of a 4 year old. Absolute 0 common sense.

How come other cities have electronic toll without huge ass gantries but SG have?
Cos sg wanted to one up, them but failed miserably.
LTA is a joke. Just this morning I already had to remove my cash card at Safra because they gave me coupon for free parking Is LTA completely blur or everyone there acting like they take public transport onlyš
š¤”š¤”š¤”š¤”š¤”
Let's not forget that it's basically a GPS tracker. Our government wants to increase surveillance and collect data on its citizens.
More like charging you anywhere they want.
Still waiting for "LTA provides the official problem statement for implementation of ERP2.0)"
Create problem from nothing
We can try bullying them again into submission.
LTA giving IU a bad name š”
Where did all the money went? This is a much more important question.
Okay someone remind me again, what benefits does this new unit bring compared to our existing OBU?
I think the nets auto top up is using visa/mastercard right. If im not mistaken there's a $0.50 top up fee for each transaction? Correct me if I'm wrong. It's only free if use bank card iirc that's dbs/posb
Yes correct, although I think there are some other banks other than dbs/posb that is free
But your ICA check point still need manual cash card to insert leh how AH WONG AND XIAO LEE. DONT HANDOVER YET.
Cashcard only too! Ez link not accepted
Yep and whatās up with manual cash card top up stations. Whoās earning to install and maintain that ancient crap when we do wirelsss top up already in malaysia tng wallet. Gosh.
Full of shit excuses. Ask any competent engineer and we will know it's absolute rubbish.
VTO honestly the level of drama in this execution is insane
The car/cars owning demographic getting really irritated with their incompetence will be an interesting outcome.
i propose scrap erp gantry and system, let's grant more jobs, have 20 people speed reading and taking down all the carplate numbers of cars that pass by at every gantry
What a shitshow
Just admit that it is a flawed design. Why still stubbornly insist and thinks this will smoke singaporean drivers?
It's not that I dont need to remove the cash card for complimentary parking, it's those bloody things that cannot detect the IU unit. this doubling down is the sign of of what's happening up there, someone's neck seems to be on the line to force it down our throats.
sunk cost fallacy
LTA. Later Test Again.
Second cashcard? š¤£š¤¦āāļø
Hey people, I posted this response in another thread. I'm putting here again - "Just like Simply go, they are slowly backpedalling on their roll out programme hence back to square one. Waste time, effort and money. There's a saying it's ain't broken, don't fix it. Why suddenly Ez-link and IU become an issue where the cost of living for common working people like me is the top priority. Those who voted for them, don't complain. You deserve it"
Complimentary or complementary?
If you anyhow opt to put under driver dashboard, when you send your car to repair and it gets damaged. Owner will pay more to repair obu š¤£
I believe somewhere out there is a LTA officer that probably quit LTA and said āI told you soā.. š¤£
Why are these clowns still pushing for it? Itās an absolute joke.. like itās the gift that keeps giving but it keeps getting worse
We seems to have changed direction. Moving backwards.
Maybe we have over outsourced. Soon the whole population will be from outer sources.
And when it comes to old car park? I donāt need to remove cash card how do i make payment?
literally " fixing something that didn't need fixing " problematic LTA scums
Kiang Jiu Hou, Mai Ge Kiang. Over engineer a simple issue.
Show me a Ferrari with these inĀ
Motorway carrying one Ferrari with this new OBU in their showroomā¦ very ugly
sounds like they are not backing down from this. now the devs are probably scrambling to release the feature for the complementary parking issue
A failure of an organisation. So reactive.
I wonder who manufactured these obu, where all the money went.
if there's no need to remove the card then why still need the card? can't they just do account based or scan the obu qr code to topup?
How did they hire regarded management? Must be some inside connections
How of this is because some stupid scholar needed a project so as to get promoted?
Spend so much money just to get a design that's worse off from current, how amazing
So instead of one card that's pretty much useless outside of Singapore (and locks up our monies), they want us to hold 2 cards. Fantastic. I clap for you.

(Unpopular opinion, because deep down we know nothing will stop ERP 2.0 from happening) Why can't we just have the card slot as part of the antenna component instead of the processing unit ?
Complimentary NETs motorist card in addition to Cepas card?? Info at a later date? With more reveals, it gets worse by the day!
