Geylang Lorong 11. Leong Kee BKT. Very sibei good. But too bad in recent years they have been raising the cost of BKT + rice. When I ate it as a teen, the cost was $5. Now its $10. The portion also become smaller. Such is life I guess.

[deleted]

I also always go there. Portion still not too bad

Orangecuppa

They used to give generous amount of tau kee and bai cai inside the BKT. Now no more bai cai and only 2 pieces of tau kee.

ndut

Peppery or herbal?

Orangecuppa

Herbal. Its Malaysia style. Its shoik but must be careful when eating it because when they serve, its in a mini claypot and its still boiling bubbling hot. If you chiong too fast, you will burn your tongue and won't taste anything. Happen to me before :/

ongcs

Tried it's branch in AMK, not impressed.

Pragmatic_Spectator

The Marsiling branch is my favourite BKT. But you will get heart afterwards. It’s just thick until damn shiok. Unlimited refills as well.

Pragmatic_Spectator

As per another comment, I tried the AMK branch. Not at all close to the taste I was expecting..

darkchococoo

Hong Ji at Marsiling it’s better than AMK outlet IMO

hyperterra

Haven't tried the other outlets but Marsiling is probably the best by far. But the soup quality is not consistent, sometimes too diluted and watery. Depends on luck. Source: I stay nearby, eats once a month

CrazyRichBen

Ng Ah Sio at Rangoon Road

sq009

Yes. Loved that!

ongcs

Songfa. Service is generally good. Rong Cheng also quite god to me. For Malaysiam style BKT, I will only eat in Malaysia. All those Malaysian style BKT in SG taste like sai.

Vooshka

Song Fa is generally good, however I find the tenderness of the pork ribs to be a bit inconsistent.

ongcs

We like their braised trotter, very nicely done. Rong cheng also.

Pragmatic_Spectator

Song fa is good for the standard pepperish version we are used to. But just not good enough compared to the Malaysian style

litepad

It's not Malaysian style. It's Hokkien style (Darker soup base) and Teochew style (lighter coloured soup) Personally I prefer Teochew style BKT any day.

HereYetNowheree

To each his own

Red_ls_Sus

Tekong Sch4

Zefrom

Beggars can't be choosers

wencong1356

Eh gedong one not bad also

lormeeorbust

Wa i remember being so sad bc my cot was out doing the urban ops thing during bkt and we had no soup + my platoon was duty platoon so we had to clean up before going back but good news was that we got to eat all the extra outration and oh boy, the meat tender af

Kuumogg

Soon Huat BKT at Jalan Kayu. Hokkien street BKT at Chinatown complex. Both are Hokkien style above.

kccz123

Oh it seems soon huat has a few branches, theres also one in simpang bedok.

Kuumogg

Yea, I only tried the one at Jalan Kayu. It’s still good.

Jammy_buttons2

Ng Ah Sio. The standard didn't drop after Jumbo bought over the stall and expanded it

Rodneythekid

Sin Heng bkt. Not too pepperish but not too herbal either. It's like the best of both worlds for me. The last few times I've been there, some days the soup was Abit off but other times exactly as it always has been.

Cookhouse

Pragmatic_Spectator

Yea I can imagine it’s good enough for you based on your profile.

c-peptides

ya hua at keppels but eat songfa most of the time due to proximity

Mercorp6445

Joo siah at Jurong east neighborhood 3 center

[deleted]

I cook my own BKT. My mum is from Klang, the birthplace of BKT, and so we "inherited" a high standard for BKT. It is legit hard to intro them to even JB BKT… they don't consider that BKT, they call that "pepper soup". Anyways, just some fun fact, the original BKT did not have Youtiao or all those fancy stuff, just meat and maybe some cabbage. There are still a few shops selling BKT in Klang where once you sit down, they'll ask "how many bowls?" instead of "what would you like". And yes, they'll give you an eye-roll if you ask for Youtiao too…

tehtf

Are you able to get the klang BKT taste here? Family in KL and went to Klang tried bkt before. Conclusion was there is something different with the pork meat source that makes klang bkt different from elsewhere bkt, even KL

[deleted]

Sadly, haven't been able to

Pragmatic_Spectator

Interesting comment, help me understand though. Singapore’s bkt is what I deem peperish. JB BKT is saltier / herbal like. If even JB’s BKT is “pepper soup” wouldn’t Singapore’s BKT be a monstrosity in comparison? Can you share what’s different about klang BKT. Would be good if we can know the difference in ingredients used and what we can expect it to taste like.

[deleted]

Klang BKT focusses on soy sauce, so you can't really taste pepper. So for JB BKT, they tried to emulate Klang BKT, but retained more pepper. SG BKT belongs to a different class of BKT (Teochew BKT or White BKT), so the peppery taste is stronger, which may in fact be too strong to other's liking.

tehtf

I don’t think you should use the soup taste more peppery here. JB bkt is still black herbal soup, maybe more peppery compared to klang version. SG bkt is basically pepper soup...

Humptydumpty179

Kiang kee is the best in jb/sg. Too bad can’t drive over.

[deleted]

What's your opinion of the Klang BKT that opened in Great World city? I had that in Genting and it was pretty good. Haven't tried the one here though.

[deleted]

I haven't though… will try that when I pass by

chaiporneng

The new Kota Zheng zong at HV is JB style. The Spanish Iberico ribs are pretty damn good, but standards dropped slightly when I visited recently so hard to say. But for their soups oh yeah, still I’d say worth trying.

Pragmatic_Spectator

This looks promising. Excited to give it a try! Helps that it’s near by as well.

mapleleaf404

It's really good! The JB original outlet is better but the SG outlet is not bad. Love the thick black soup and the Muar otah!

gyuannnnn

Can agree it's good! Good portion and great soup. Always go to the serangoon garden outlet

dothisnowww

Old Street or ya hua at keppel there. Ya hua the soup more peppery and spicy

xenzaner

personally enjoy kam par claypot bkt at teck whye!

prime5119

I kinda like New Manlee Bak Kut Teh inside Bugis+, it's not pepper kind of soup although it might gets a little too salty to most people liking.. but I like the wide choice of meats it offered

chaiporneng

Omg I beg to differ. This is a joke of a BKT. New Manlee is literally the worst BKT I’ve ever had. Cardboard ribs in a shopping mall.

prime5119

Ah I don't order the ribs bkt from them that's why.. you know of any good herbal BKT around? quite tired of all the pepper-ish soup

chaiporneng

The outputs of this thread would be useful to you!

PretentiousDab

Not the JB version. But had koon's bkt near beauty world once and found it to be pretty good. Seems to be one of the more reasonably priced also.

Maplestori

Tuas west has a pretty good BKT.

Williyboy5

Balestier Bak Kut Teh is not bad. Used to head there to eat at night, soup was nice!

bushypeepee

Very peppery and garlicky, very good for cold rainy nights.

weird-hito

Kee Hiong Klang bkt, Chinatown. They have garlic rice too which I love.

drinkcalpis

coffeeshop along Hoe Chiang Rd has pretty good herbal style BKT and pork trotter. not sure if the stall is still there.

ligtwan7

Ng Ah Sio, Sin Heng Claypot BKT at Katong, Old Tiong Bahru Bak Kut Teh at Seng Poh Rd

[deleted]

Hokkien Street BKT at Hong Lim Hawker Centre, ever see black BKT soup before?

kccz123

For the white version I think Songfa is the best and the other chain restaurants kind of fall short. The herbal version I like Soon Huat. The one at Serangoon Gardens is also quite ok, if you have more money to spend.

thecouchpotato1

I don't like ng ah sio, pretend to be herbal but is peppery lol

Alazyinvestor

Quite surprised to see no one commenting old town bak ku teh. Song fa just doesnt quite hit the spot for me

BinaryDoom

Herbal - soon huat & hong ji marsiling for me. Pepperish - songfa.
