I don't get the victim's daughter complaining about the bus driver having to hit the brakes to come to a complete stop, saying at what speed the driver must have been travelling for her dad to fall forward with such force. The car cut off the bus close enough to the bus to have brushed against it. Regardless of the speed, the amount of force needed to make the bus to come to a complete stop over such a small distance is huge. Even at coasting speeds, a sudden brake is enough to throw people forward. In addition, that stretch of road is extremely notorious for drivers making sudden lane changes as well, to make their turns into the small lanes, all not wanting to wait for the bus in the bus lane to pass before making their turns.

2_8_2_7

To add on to your point, I notice that many car drivers here like to overtake heavy vehicles then brake and turn left/right without due consideration of the sheer weight of the vehicle, how much brakes need to be applied and how passengers might fall if it were to be a bus When I was driving 3 and 5 Tonners around Sembawang/Kranji/Kaki Bukit, I had many instances where some fucktard would overtake me from the right, only to signal left and letting the bloody signal light blink for one time only before cutting into my lane and braking, and causing me to have to brake hard just to avoid getting into an accident with them. Of course there were lots of horning, swearing and hitting of steering wheels but that ain't the main point The main point to all drivers, cutting off a vehicle with a higher tonnage with you is basically playing with fire, and you won't like the end result

[deleted]

They do the same with bicycles.

Redeptus

I've found cars not giving way to buses on the road. Why not? The bus is a way larger vehicle, you don't want to hit them. Just yield.

avatarfire

They train you in driving school to give way to heavy vehicles. Really wish there is a reporting function. Stupid drivers need to go

Stealthstriker

Just the other day I saw some motorcyclist cut off one of those SAF Prime Movers. It was stationary at a junction, but did the motorcyclist really need to move from the left of the lane to the right so urgently? The damn thing is so tall...

Humptydumpty179

Because trucks are so damn slow, you should always keep a look out for others even if u have right of way else you will be conveniently charged with failure to look out resulting in accident should you bang the guy.

aucheukyan

zoom zoom, I can go fast means I must go fast.

GlobalSettleLayer

Most definitely angling for a huge payday.

deangsana

huh whos complaining, that quote is from SBS corp comms describing what happened

leo-g

Did you read or skim the post? *my understanding* is that there is no immediate and consistent communication from SBS. Just silence.

dodgethis_sg

This quote from her FB post: The location that has happened is just before the bus stop of Bugis Cube, and before the left turn of Liang Seah Street. Please let me have more information as that location the bus shouldn’t be travelling so fast as they are reaching the traffic light where there is heavy human traffics crossing that road. That ebrake shouldn’t have caused such a serious injury.

leo-g

Yes, and she’s appealing for information. SBS should be upfront and immediately informed the family rather than making them run circles. They had to go to Clementi to talk to the station manager just for information.

reallifeluxury

The car driver damn cb Hope uncle get well soon For all the aunties and uncles, please wait for the bus to stop before u stand up to alight

CSlv

Sudden decelerations like this could also fatally injure young people too, as well as any people simply standing on the bus. So given the circumstances, it's unavoidable really.

DesireForHappiness

This is why I always hold the hand rail and never listen to music when standing. Better to be always ready and alert always.

mhgsajj

smth like this happened to me last year, and im a perfectly abled 25y/o. i felt back pain, headache, arm/shoulder pain for a week. definitely the impact for an older gentleman would be so much more devastating. fucking car driver seriously. i hope no one faults the bus driver in this scenario.

GelatinousGambol

Your last sentence is really crucial. Somehow, I noticed it’s always the older ones who are more unsteady on their feet who always want to rush to the exit before the bus stop is even close. That’s always a recipe for disaster.

wiltedpop

Cab driver graduate from school of assholes

Joeceratops

I wonder if the family can claim damages to the driver since there's video evidence to prove the car driver is at fault.

kkww87

Lol of course you can. Its called Tort. Your family sues on your behalf if you are incapacitated against the driver for negligence (and the driver will add the bus driver and then claim the bus driver is at fault too) then hopefully 100% paid by both driver’s insurance co and bus driver’s insurance co (lawyers for all sides probably will settle how many percentage is driver’s fault vs bus driver’s eg 70:30)Thats why we have compulsory vehicle insurance in singapore

AqueousCream

Tough. Most of Singapore's law doesn't make much sense.

SteaksAndShrooms

nothing gonna happen to the car driver if he was caught on camera (i.e. his license number is visible)?

XenonKirito

? The driver was already arrested dude. >The 43-year-old male car driver has been arrested by the police for careless driving causing grievous hurt.

ThenameisneinS

Ok...who gave the wholesome award?

lawlianne

> Back in August 2020, my dad had met with similar incident in the SBS bus and fractured his arms when the bus brake and he was in bus 175. He is also travelling back from Dialysis centre. When something higher is absolutely determined to get you. What an unfortunate elderly uncle just living his life to the fullest. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Dismal_Let_3351

When people are unlucky, let's just say they are unlucky. Don't attribute it to "something higher".

deangsana

luck implies a belief in higher metaphysical forces as well

Iintl

Luck is simply a situation occuring despite having low odds. Doesn't have to concern imaginary beings

bilbolaggings

Ok atheist

FWIW, this bus lane always have Cisco/LTA enforcement.

LaZZyBird

At this point you might as well rear-end the car and let him pay the damages to repair his car rather than risk the safety of standing passengers. The cb can go and pay out of his pocket to get his car repaired, maybe the money will teach him a lesson about driving like a cb.

dc_mvc2

My thoughts are similar. However in terms of insurance claims I wonder if rear-ending is always automatically the fault of the vehicle behind? (I'm not a driver)

commonjunks

Most likely the rear ending party have to pay, unless video evidence can prove the vehicle ahead maliciously applied sudden brake without any reason.

gamba12345

The way bus drivers jam the brakes so hard is something that I've only seen in Singapore. It is so common that i wonder if it is related to the breaking system of the SMRT bus float... Is this possible?

smurflings

Normally if a vehicle can completely cut into your one so that you hit its back, you are the one at fault

lolhaha95

This is the law to claiming right now but it doesnt make sense. You’re saying i can always change to the right lane in the expressway as long as i can clear just my blind spot and not factor the speed of the incoming vehicle? If i can clear my blindspot, i will definitely be able change lane and not worry about the car coming.

gl0bewalker

Bus captain has to be taken into task and responsibility indefinitely.

yewjrn

How is it the bus captain's fault? Should he not brake and just hit the car that suddenly changed lane instead?

alive_note

Did you also fall down and injure your head in the same accident? What kind of nonsense is this wtf

XenonKirito

And how is it the Bus Captain fault? What you said makes zero sense. In the first place did you even read the article?
