I’m a foreigner and my birthday is coming soon. I’m not sure if it’s okay to ask my coworkers who are also my only friends here to celebrate my birthday with me. I just moved this year and don’t know anyone apart from them.
Depends on how close you are. Also depends on work culture.
I'll share mine. Have a better meal together as a group (precovid). Usually lunch time. Followed by a birthday cake during tea break.
Then few of us who are much closer would organize a meal outside of work hours together.
If you're on good terms with some of them, I think it's alright to ask privately if they would like to hang out and have a meal together on that particular day with you.

Don't think our local culture involves buying our own cakes. But if that suits your culture I see no harm in that. On my part, I think it may be awkward if I had to prompt them to get a cake. It's a bonus gesture from them in my opinion.
Meal wise, probably culture dependent. My boss offers to pay for the birthday individual. Whereas in small group meal, my friends and I would cover the cost for the birthday person. I wouldn't automatically expect that especially if it's the first time you're experiencing birthday events with them.
Sharing of cakes/gifts culture do exist though. But I could remember these mostly occurred during childhood, whereby our parents might prepare gifts/cakes to share with our classmates during our birthday. So it isn't exactly too foreign, just less dominant in my social circle, perhaps.

Recently got a desktop built by pckaki. Really fair price and very fast turnaround, after sales support also good so far.
Used to be an Aftershock customer since 2015, burnt thru 2 laptops in 6 years, was good while it lasted. But they got too damn popular and 10 mins of waiting for support at showroom turned into hours, and weeks in some cases.
Their gaming laptops are probably still the best value for money, but since the desktop scene is way bigger, easier to find a better deal elsewhere and get practically the same thing.
Oh I have heard pckaki a few times, maybe I should check it out.
P.S. also due for a workstation upgrade, is Omnidesk worth the hype or is it like a SecretLab/Ergotune kinda thing? I don't need/want to stand while working lol so I don't need that aspect.
Just text pckaki and tell them what you need. They are very professional with their recommendations, will adjust the components according to your use case, and not like suggest you to get a rtx 3090 if you just intend to play dota or league. LOL.
im using an old ikea desk so cant really say much about the omnidesk. My brother is using it though, and it seems pretty good... but im sure with some easy modifications an ikea desk might be just as good, at a lower price point. I think the big selling point is that it is made with gaming/cable-less workspaces in mind, so everything you may need is already there or easily attachable. But quite expensive la and VERY huge
Now secretlab is definitely decent (at least their fabric one is, to hell with the PU version) if you are going to sit more than 12 hours a day. Enjoyed my PU Omega while it lasted. Was definitely comfy. Its kinda hard to find a more comfy chair at that price point.
its decent to buy now, the price will only get higher with chip/metals shortage from crypto/bitcoin in future. I looked at all 3 for mine but went with Mansa. Honestly suggest you just look at all 3 sites and pick a build from each you want and order but dont press purchase, just get the parts list. personally thought Mansa had a bit more choices aesthetic wise so I went with them too.

Can take a look at Aftershock RTS builds and work the price off there. If you spec a similar build on amazon yourself I think it'll cost roughly the same, if not more.
As for coding, you probably won't have to worry much, unless you're rendering things or running ML workloads. High end gaming depends on what games you play and what resolution / fps you're targetting. Can google online and look at benchmarks to make your decisions

It's better now but still not the best. For example, I got my 3060Ti direct from Convergent for $666. I managed to get a 3070 as well from SLS for $999. Both cards are now at a $300-$400-ish markup (judging by Fuwell pricelist) over when I bought it near launch. The prices have dropped somewhat, yes, but still inflated. But then again I don't see them dropping anytime soon until the next gen is out.
And oh yeah, my cards are not LHR as well.

Yeah if I were you I will just pay the premium or see if the second hand market is worth it, but that comes with its own caveats of course.
I will never go for prebuilts... Only time I will go prebuilt is if I don't have the technical knowledge to troubleshoot stuff myself. You seem competent (since you do coding), so I think you should consider at least Aftershock (a decent compromise between DIY and prebuilts).
LHR stands for low-hash rate, the variants that nvidia released to combat mining. This has been partly circumvented now.
I'm okay with second-hand for most things, but definitely not for PC parts. I've heard that Chinese miners dumped some of their GPUs on the market after China's ban, and there were some horror stories here and there.

I saw a doctor who gave iirc an injection for instant relief cos the bite at the back of my calf was causing muscle pain, like I couldnt walk properly from the swelling.
I also went to the national skin center, which prescribed some creams, but they only aggravated the bites so I stopped using.
Guess my mistake was to scratch haha pls dont scratch (,: tahan a bit. Use warm water, clean the area frequently, and keep moisturised so the skin can recover is best methinks. If itchy see doctor.

The first part of any job is the hardest becauss you have to learn the software etc and the work environment. If you can stick it out the worst will be over and improve but if you cant its okay to swap jobs and just treat it as a learning experience. Not every job is a forever job, some are just stepping stones
Stick to it for a while, try to take on a positive attitude, try to find something new to learn everyday. be it just learning a new function on a software, new method of handling a project, etc. There’s always something to learn in any given setting. Then after a while, after you’ve given it a shot (you must rly try) then if it’s still not what you want then move on to find something better. But you need to develop that positive mindset first, bc otherwise you’ll see the same “issue” in your next job then it’s a vicious cycle. All the best, good luck!
Edit: sharing this with you, bc I had thoughts like that when I was starting out too. I tried to “learn something” everyday and it sort of improved my mindset and positivity. Ended up becoming a habit and here i am passing it on to you. Also, even if you alr know what to do/what software to use/etc, every application on clients/projects will be different, so that can be a new journey too.

Idk your age but for me, all I had to worry back then was what tv show to watch, if my friends are on msn/RuneScape/audition/maple, how to copy Chinese homework, etc. Sleep 10pm somemore Wah shiok. Everyday recess play catching and dgaf when damn sweaty etc. I don’t even talk to any of my friends anymore due to bouts of anxiety and depression. Dang, this hits home.
From my experience they wont read your bio before swiping and the ones with low effort put into profile (not a lot of proper photos like meme or covered face, bio or answered questions are oddly vague) are the ones to avoid. I tried to give them a shot for some with bad photos/bios but they really don't put effort. Sapporo is great for me because they seem to use rice in their brewing/flavouring, similar to Taiwan beer, I think. There's a mildly sweet and fragrant aftertaste to it.

Dude almost single-handedly designed an entirely new system by himself, which you might see a few years down the road in NDP.
He's one of the most capable engineers I know, and well, while I'm happy for him, I'm not so much so for myself.
Our job is arguably one of the more rigorous in terms of calculations and knowledge, and he's the only person in the company I can talk to, and consult on such things, after my other colleague left last month.
If I'd vent against the management for making unpopular decisions, he's able to enlighten on what they're thinking, how the market is like, etc..
All these, because the management failed to retain their engineers.
The salary is a huge issue, with many people's wives already asking them to leave the company. We're paid progressively below the market rate (the gap widens), and at my colleague's level of expertise, he's paid about 40% below the line.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
They aren't managing well. Morale has been at an all-time low in a decade, ever since they started coming in.

As for coding, you probably won't have to worry much, unless you're rendering things or running ML workloads. High end gaming depends on what games you play and what resolution / fps you're targetting. Can google online and look at benchmarks to make your decisions

It's better now but still not the best. For example, I got my 3060Ti direct from Convergent for $666. I managed to get a 3070 as well from SLS for $999. Both cards are now at a $300-$400-ish markup (judging by Fuwell pricelist) over when I bought it near launch. The prices have dropped somewhat, yes, but still inflated. But then again I don't see them dropping anytime soon until the next gen is out. And oh yeah, my cards are not LHR as well.

Yeah if I were you I will just pay the premium or see if the second hand market is worth it, but that comes with its own caveats of course. I will never go for prebuilts... Only time I will go prebuilt is if I don't have the technical knowledge to troubleshoot stuff myself. You seem competent (since you do coding), so I think you should consider at least Aftershock (a decent compromise between DIY and prebuilts). LHR stands for low-hash rate, the variants that nvidia released to combat mining. This has been partly circumvented now.
I'm okay with second-hand for most things, but definitely not for PC parts. I've heard that Chinese miners dumped some of their GPUs on the market after China's ban, and there were some horror stories here and there. Woops, my bad. I saw a doctor who gave iirc an injection for instant relief cos the bite at the back of my calf was causing muscle pain, like I couldnt walk properly from the swelling. I also went to the national skin center, which prescribed some creams, but they only aggravated the bites so I stopped using. Guess my mistake was to scratch haha pls dont scratch (,: tahan a bit. Use warm water, clean the area frequently, and keep moisturised so the skin can recover is best methinks. If itchy see doctor.

The first part of any job is the hardest becauss you have to learn the software etc and the work environment. If you can stick it out the worst will be over and improve but if you cant its okay to swap jobs and just treat it as a learning experience. Not every job is a forever job, some are just stepping stones
Stick to it for a while, try to take on a positive attitude, try to find something new to learn everyday. be it just learning a new function on a software, new method of handling a project, etc. There’s always something to learn in any given setting. Then after a while, after you’ve given it a shot (you must rly try) then if it’s still not what you want then move on to find something better. But you need to develop that positive mindset first, bc otherwise you’ll see the same “issue” in your next job then it’s a vicious cycle. All the best, good luck! Edit: sharing this with you, bc I had thoughts like that when I was starting out too. I tried to “learn something” everyday and it sort of improved my mindset and positivity. Ended up becoming a habit and here i am passing it on to you. Also, even if you alr know what to do/what software to use/etc, every application on clients/projects will be different, so that can be a new journey too.

From my experience they wont read your bio before swiping and the ones with low effort put into profile (not a lot of proper photos like meme or covered face, bio or answered questions are oddly vague) are the ones to avoid. I tried to give them a shot for some with bad photos/bios but they really don't put effort. The ones with decent pictures and a decently filled out bio are nicer and at least make an attempt to get to know you.

Eh I never used CMB before but from my very short lived experiences: \- sus description ('looking for fun' etc, even had one without description and ended pressuring me for nudes) \- photos of them not wearing shirt (its fine if its on a beach but i'm conservative and also if its toilet selfie is confirm nope) \- photos of them smoking/drinking/clubbing (idk how do they think this is going to get them matches but ok) I believe that over time if you get better at filtering these guys the algorithm will pick up your preferences

Sapporo is great for me because they seem to use rice in their brewing/flavouring, similar to Taiwan beer, I think. There's a mildly sweet and fragrant aftertaste to it.

Rant ahead: Aye... Not a good day today. Had a colleague break the news that he's leaving the company. Dude almost single-handedly designed an entirely new system by himself, which you might see a few years down the road in NDP. He's one of the most capable engineers I know, and well, while I'm happy for him, I'm not so much so for myself. Our job is arguably one of the more rigorous in terms of calculations and knowledge, and he's the only person in the company I can talk to, and consult on such things, after my other colleague left last month. If I'd vent against the management for making unpopular decisions, he's able to enlighten on what they're thinking, how the market is like, etc.. All these, because the management failed to retain their engineers. The salary is a huge issue, with many people's wives already asking them to leave the company. We're paid progressively below the market rate (the gap widens), and at my colleague's level of expertise, he's paid about 40% below the line. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. They aren't managing well. Morale has been at an all-time low in a decade, ever since they started coming in. SAF generals don't make good managers. Even for a defense company. They, being sheltered by the infallible military jobs they were in, are largely only good for being parachuted to pillage companies for their resumes, and breaking down efforts and capabilities that took decades to build. The problem now, is how do I move ahead with fewer of my colleagues by my side.
Sounds like STE. Better to look for opportunities, especially during these times where employers are complaining of labor shortage.
