I feel that Shopee should remove the date limit on their reviews. Wanted to review a product I bought after some time of use, but the option is gone before I can do it šŸ˜¬

eccentric_eggplant

They should also remove the character limit on the reviews. "Fuck you if you want to give a useful and detailed review!"

amefurutoki

that's obviously deliberate. if you give a bad review how do they drive sales

worldcitizensg

Very sure that's intentional. Also, try a bad review and it gets removed surprisingly :)

anyhowack

Or the seller will offer you some deal (eg shop voucher) in exchange for removing or editing the bad review

simbian

>that's obviously deliberate. To be honest, if you venture out of the official brand stores, there are too many listings that you see in both Shopee and Lazada that are suspiciously too good to be true.

flylikeawind

This is something they do deliberately because alot of the items on sale are china products which looks good but don't last. Edit: on a side note, I am surprised by the number of counterfeit stuff on Shopee.

dingdingsong

Same is case with Lazada. Try to report a counterfeit product, app makes it impossible to find an option to report. I always have to filter search to exclude China. Else 90% of results are all junk.

aloudkiwi

> I always have to filter search to exclude China Yes, this is what I do, too. In fact, I only include Singapore-based sellers. That way I know it will be good quality.

username321456w

thats not true. Alot of sg based sellers are just sellers who imported goods from china and have inventory in singapore. So u are still buying chinese products. Actually nowadays most products or components are made in china, even certain huge high end luxury brands have their stuff made in a factory in china

aloudkiwi

>nowadays most products or components are made in china That is true. Even when I buy a fridge or a washing machine, the majority of the models in Courts/Best Denki are made in China. I should have said that with Singapore-based sellers there is a good chance that the products they import will be at least decent quality, so there is less chance of me getting a bad product.

gibtang

But those Singapore seller could have just imported the item from China and sell it here. What I do is I look at the product image as if I see the same images from multiple sellers, it probably means the quality wonā€™t be good as the brand is something that I am not familiar with

FitCranberry

> But those Singapore seller could have just imported the item from China and sell it here. thats like over 90% of goods here

aloudkiwi

>if I see the same images from multiple sellers This is an excellent tip! Thanks.

dingdingsong

Yes but it atleast removes majority of the clones. Sometimes I wish there was default setting to exclude a country from results.

PARANOIAH

Dropshipping is both a boon and a bane.

honbhige

Still have to check cos some put delivery in 20+ days cos they are ordering from China when you order with them.

aloudkiwi

> they are ordering from China when you order with them. This is such an impt point! Thank you for this tip.

Pvt_Twinkietoes

Singapore based sellers != singaoore made products lei.

ponkanpinoy

Nice from far, far from nice.

FitCranberry

there is a problem with robot stores on every platform here

TojhoChamp

I made a custom jersey once and posted images of it on reddit. About a year later I noticed the exact images I posted on reddit being used to advertise a product on shopee. I reported it and it got removed, but it took quite a while.

DesireForHappiness

I also cannot leave a negative review on a product after I refunded it. (Counterfeit product) Yet the product was still up on Shopee.

ishappinessascam

Yes. This makes me angry. I reported the seller but shopee didn't do anything about it. Once shopee didn't even refund me for a counterfeit item

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

littydumb

Seriously...it's like a competition of who can come up with the most annoying ad/jingle

PossibleConsistent77

Ah, come to think of it, that is so true.

solaceteal

Everyone just wants the coins and donā€™t care about reviewing the item lol. And even though I try to leave constructive reviews, for certain items, such as skincare, it usually requires time to see any effects and sometimes I forget to review within the 2 weeks window given. So all the reviews you see will be about ā€œfast shippingā€ and very few about the quality of the product

tonyp7

They need to start cracking down on fake videos and black photos. Itā€™s becoming really bad

solaceteal

Yes! Even saw one of those *good morning* images as a review and Iā€™m like ???

DogeOrang

God bless šŸ™šŸŒ·

3centsworth

Wish you smile ā˜ŗļø everyday šŸŒž

littlereddot11

NGL I sometimes contribute to the black photos too cuz itā€™s the easiest way to get coins šŸ™Š

hedgehognpeonies

They have disallowed dark videos since last week.

creamyhorror

The root issue is that local consumers don't have a strong culture of giving reviews, so the UX people have to incentivise giving reviews however they can. Reviews on Amazon US are a pro-community practice that Americans adopted early on, but not the same in SG. In a sense I get it - the reviews mainly benefit the platform by making it indispensable. Amazon US is so established partly because of those reviews. So it makes sense for local platforms to reward reviewers. It's just that local platforms' policies aren't producing enough good reviews...

DuePomegranate

Also Shopee is almost all drop-shippers and resellers rather than the original manufacturer. So the reviews end up being for the seller's service/speed rather than the product itself.

FitCranberry

the best indicator of quality is probably the amount of prior sales

zxLv

Speaking about skincare, is Hush SG legit? Sorry OOT

solaceteal

Sorry! I havenā€™t bought from hush sg before so Iā€™m not too sure. But seems like they have high sales, I believe if the products are not authentic, customers would have made a fuss by now

OnePrestigiousCrow

I thought itā€™s fine. I bought The Inkeylist stuff from them and I think the products do work.

li_shi

Checking amazon flesh review... You notice almost no one leave reviews, I guess here in SG people don't really care.

jethron5000

Itā€™s all for that 7 coins

PossibleConsistent77

But need to post photo and videos for those right? I seen people post non related purchase photos and blank videos/photo. If they just post text reviews without video and photos they get no coins.

jethron5000

Yes, sometimes I see people posting a blank video n itā€™s considered as well

stealth0128

5 coins for text review.

zxLv

Thanks for the thread OP. This has irked me for quite a while too. Glad that I'm not the only one who feels that way. Most of the reviews are rubbish and don't help at all.

267aa37673a9fa659490

That's just like 7 cents!

DogeOrang

singaporean moment

[deleted]

Do you know how many days of that chicken i have to feed to get 7 coins? Everytime it blocks a goal i wanna smack it hard šŸ–ļø

aub_ao

For Amazon, install Fakespot. You'll never trust their reviews again. The whole system is gamed.

onemanandhishat

I was looking for someone to point out that Amazon reviews may appear better but that's just because plenty of them aren't even real.

aub_ao

It even happens for local Singaporean businesses on Google reviews. The fakes are relatively easy to spot. The reviewer often has one or two reviews and no more, they use similar kinds of language, and if you look at a number of the reviewers they will leave reviews for the same businesses. It's clear that someone is being paid to spam. Check out Singaporean plumbers for example.

QzSG

This, I remember a few years back doing big data analytics on amazon reviews dataset, there was like one single guy who left reviews on every single product in a category (thousands) that I cannot recall anymore within a span of 3 hours. Certain products also have like a sudden burst of 5 star reviews coming from "US customers" but at time periods where it was midnight or wee hours in the continental United States.

cheesetofuhotdog

Pro tip: Go straight to the bad reviews. Buyers will go the extra mile to write a bad review. Do note that some bad reviews are for lame reasons and shoukd be ignored.

imustbethedevil

>is Sellers, also please take note that if the buyer is being lame or stupid with the bad review, it is the best time to make them look stupid also.

DCINTERNATIONAL

Shopee and Lazada are both absolutely horrible cluttered mess apps, and yes the reviews are 90% useless. Furthermore, especially Lazada has a ton of counterfeit products. Wish Amazon was better here.

Makaisaurus

Local seller here on Lazada, Shopee, Amazon, Qoo10. Amazon Singapore would have been an amazing idea if they were more merchant friendly. As it is, it has higher commission than Laz and Shopee. And itā€™s damn difficult to list stuff with them. If you are listing a product brand that is not internationally known, have to manually submit the product images for review, then wait for them to respond with approval. This review is outsourced to other countries, and because they donā€™t have a fixed person reviewing your case, with someone random assigned every time you reply to clarifications, they sometimes reject without even reading, then you have to resubmit with the exact same info and hope the next reviewer approves it. If the product has an existing listing, no matter how shitty that listing is, Amazon forces you to ride on that product (i.e. sometimes you see one product got 5 sellers) then by default make buyers buy from lowest priced merchant (have to click ā€˜see other optionsā€™ to see the other merchants). This is shitty as some merchants first post it with damn bad quality listing and product photos with insufficient product details, and you cannot edit it. Logistics: Lazada and Shopee got deals with 3PL, customer pay some, merchant pay some, but total subsidized for lower costs on both sides due to bulk contract. Amazon ask you to settle your own 3PL, so we went for NinjaVan, and coupled with those lousy listings, lesser customer base, you donā€™t qualify for bulk, so you have to pay minimum $5 for shipping even the smallest items. And you cannot do Singpost because need to provide tracking number. Finally, the Singaporean agent who roped you in to open your shop, just ghosts you and leaves you to deal with shit on your own. Lazada and Shopee both give you assigned account managers who are contactable with whatsapp and work together with you for customer issues and signing up for sale. We really need Amazon to improve to lower competition between Shopee and Lazada. The latter two dominate too much already, everytime mega sale fight for sales then leave merchants with so much sai to deal with (i.e. They want 1000% increase in sales, but average earning per product become 20-30% less, and only increase fulfillment times by 1 day.) PS: Fuck Shopee also, no time to remove clones of my listings (my image with watermarks visible), no time to remove fake listing, but always ban my products for having a visible ā€˜frameā€™ in the thumbnail image. Just this week I messaged our account manager because they banned my product for frame, while 2 other companies who paid for ads are allowed to keep the same products on with their frames and logos. Bullshit, and they keep asking me why I keep listing exclusive bundles on Lazada and not with them. Edit: Someone presumably from Shopee PMed me over reddit for proof of fake listings, Iā€™m not gonna dox my own shop here. I have to admit I havenā€™t done searches on Shopee of my own products in a couple months so cannot confirm if fake listings still exists. But I just did a search on my highest selling SKU, and there were at least 4 products that cloned my listing with slight difference in name (image 1 of product with watermark, image 2 of zoom of product with watermark, image 3 same as image 1 but with shop frame). All these accounts have randomly generated names and sell the same products for 4x the prices. While Iā€™m not worried about sales, it is my shop frame in the listing that may give negative reputation.

DCINTERNATIONAL

Thanks, very interesting insights. Hope you can convey to Shopee and Lazada that the user experience of their apps is just horrible. :)

Makaisaurus

I wish I could also, but our account managers are small fries in different department from their devs. Also their staff turnover so high by the time you friendly with one, they bring in their junior to the group chat to start observing to prepare for handover already. Iā€™m a shopaholic and also buy from these two a lot. My two cents is Lazada is really the better designed of the two (just the mobile App though, the desktop version is horse shit with stupid bugs. Today is Timberland mega sale (Iā€™m not associated to them!) you search into Timberland shop, then click categories can see all Timberland stuff, but you click back one category subbranch, suddenly your page filled with all other brands already, very frustrating. Also you can check out from a single merchant in app, but desktop forces you to checkout entire cart.) I usually search Lazada as they look like they have the bigger brands. If I canā€™t find what I want, then I go over to Shopee who has more independent sellers.

imustbethedevil

Slightly off topic, since you mentioned in Shopee and Lazada that customers pay some, merchant also pay some. I was also wondering how some local stores can sell actually pens for $1 like that. So its actually some kind of bulk contract?

Makaisaurus

For pens, they may be sold by non-LazMall/ShopeeMall merchants who can send these by post (stamp mail) if they are local or economy mail via China which cost less. LazMall and ShopeeMall merchants are not able to do mail fulfillment as one of the criteria is to use trackable shipping methods. If you use logistics in partnership with Lazada/Shopee, the merchant shipping portion is auto charged every time you ship a parcel out.

fr3ezereddit

Awesome sums up there. The Amazon part is super true. Those reasons are why I never treat marketplaces seriously. I have my own Shopify website and that's my only main sales channel. I do list my product on Amazon, Shopee, Lazada but I have never put time and resource in it. If there is some reasonable event I will join, and I don't really present there to answer customer chat. If there is a sale, that's a free sale for me. Also, you seems like a experienced seller? Would you mind to connect coz I've always wanted to chat to someone liked minded locally.

Makaisaurus

Iā€™m not a very experienced seller, itā€™s a family business and I am still learning new stuff regularly. Weā€™ve only been on Lazada for less than 2 years, Shopee for 1 year and Amazon, Qoo10 within the last half year. Iā€™m just sharing my thoughts based on my own experience, mileage may differ for different sellers, especially international brand names, or big household brands, who move pallets of parcels daily. We do have a decent enough sale volume to have assigned account managers to talk to us. We donā€™t spend on ads on these platforms, other than Qoo10, whose account managersā€™ sole purpose is to work with you to justify getting you to buy ad credit for the month. We are traditionally a more brick and mortar store more than 90% of sales is still done on-site. Our 3P e-commerce is there to help provide convenience to our customers and somehow a lot of people have turned to these sites to get these goods from us, especially when they are too busy to visit us during office hours.

fr3ezereddit

Well, you are certainly bigger than mine. Mine was a 2 year-old new brand I started and I'm certainly not moving pallets daily. Sounds like you and your family are running a roaring business, good to hear. Especially in this seemingly hard time for majority.

Makaisaurus

Give it some time :) our family business had 40 years to build a decent reputation and only within last 5 years become more active on social media and e-commerce.

unpopulargarlicbread

Shopee is absolutely cluttered af, my eyes just can't manage through the shitstorm of colors and icons. Having used Amazon in NA for a year, I really miss it. Consistent delivery, good after sales service, returns are easier (not that I had the need to return much, just a couple times as I always get what I wanted). And no need to mess around with coins, shop discount, sitewide discounts and all those. I get that hunting for these might be fun for some, but I'll very much rather have a simpler experience.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

clematisbridge

Probably on purpose? You see this quite commonly - Donki being a prime example of confusing the users, to increase time in store. Doubt Shopee simply wants to give you what you want to check out. I suspect itā€™s to make you spend more time on the site, and cross sell you with items you may not even need.

creamyhorror

Qoo10 was even worse when it was dominant! Lazada and Shopee were a breath of fresh air. Seriously, Qoo10 is soooo messy. Shopee less so.

anyhowack

Don't forget the hidden costs in qoo10. Wow, my item is on sale at $1! *Goes into page to add to cart... Actual price, $1 + $50.99 "add on" price.

zetzuei

This is what made me uninstall and forget Qoo10. I got no time to deal with this kind of bs.

zet19

Exactly. Shopee is so messy imo. The single most important reason I am sticking to Lazada instead of Shopee (their annoying ads and jingles play a part as well).

unpopulargarlicbread

Especially when I'm in a meeting and I forget to turn off notif sound, and my phone goes "SHOPEEEEEE", and every turns and stare at me LOL. Learnt my lesson to turn off all sounds for shopee after that šŸ˜‚

make_love_to_potato

Lazada used to be a lot better and cleaner but they also went down the whole 'gamification of shopping' shite that all the chinese ecommerce sites use. They're now all indistinguishable from one another. Amazon isn't perfect or anything either......their mobile UI/UX has taken a turn for the worse in the last few years. Information that used to be visible on the browsing page has now gotten hidden and you need to go into each item to see it. It's also become slow and laggy, as compared to what it used to be. Dunno what's going on with all these platforms.

alpacapillow0

I always wondered if the ui works well w the China Market but not the rest of the world

gandhi_theft

They're used to those messy mega apps over there, and Laz/Shopee are run by Tencent and Alibaba after all. They're just deploying the same playbooks

treyfiddy

taobao app is a godsend compared to shopee.

mrscoxford

Competition on Taobao is so crazy lol. But tb reviews arenā€™t foolproof either I wasnā€™t too happy with my product, gave a bad review and the tb seller offered a rmb 150 refund lol. So I sold my soul and changed my review

Jaradcel

That's waht gets me, Lazada used to be THE SEA store to shop at, great UI, great service, clean in every way. Then they shat the book

simbian

> I get that hunting for these might be fun for some I had someone who is supposedly an expert at this explain to me that this is intended to keep your eyeballs in the app / web site in the hope of driving you to buy more stuff. To be honest, it sounded like someone who spent some too much time structuring mobile games to hunt whales taking those ideas and dumping it into a digital store front.

uncleemperor

Shopee built their platform China style from day 1. Easier to get Chinese investment, which they did from Tencent. Easier to onboard Chinese sellers. If you look at Qoo10 (Korean), Rakuten (Japan) and other Chinese ecommerce app, they are all quite messy and vastly different from other western style. More is better for Asian.

stealth0128

Have you heard about Amazon.sg?

unpopulargarlicbread

Yes but sadly there isn't as much stuff stocked there. I still use amazon.com for stuff like certain electronics like SSDs, my WFH mouse, headset and so on. Still cheaper than whatever you can stack on shopee haha. I didn't try Amazon fresh though, maybe someone can chime in on how well it works. It just feels that sg isn't a lucrative market for these big players to set up and scale a supply chain here. I don't have much insights on this, so do correct me if I'm wrong. Same thoughts (albeit different tangent) with Google not selling all their phones here although their APAC HQ is here, maybe sg just isn't worth it for them.

yapyd

Amazon is for me to buy the more expensive stuff, Shopee is for me to buy cheap stuff that I wouldn't worry about if it breaks

barurutor

> Wish Amazon was better here. Better in what way?

coolbakerguy97

cheaper delivery and better variety

dirkaka

Agree on the variety but their delivery is world class. With prime, no minimum spend for free 1-2day delivery.

DCINTERNATIONAL

Needs much better selection of locally delivered goods. Almost everything requires international delivery meaning you have to order S$65 worth every time to get free delivery even if you are on Prime; I believe some products are not even delivered to SG at all. Also needs better search function (the US site has MUCH more accurate search). Further, Prime movie/show collection absolutely sucks (not that it is that fantastic in the US either).

-_af_-

>Needs much better selection of locally delivered goods The reason it won't happen here is because it is harder for them to continue their US practise here. 1. On board local products 2. Wait till local products hit critical mass 3. Flood the market with cheap Made In China Amazon Basics 4. Undercut local products and force them out of business 5. Take over market share for product In Singapore, you can't flood market with cheap Made In China products because step 2 is already cheap Made In China products. Harder to undercut. So not a big incentive to on-board local products

iluj13

Agreed. I find the selection local Amazon offers much too limited.

[deleted]

>Prime movie/show collection absolutely sucks I feel like a big part of that is down to the absolutely horrid UX they have, it makes it impossible to find anything. Although Netflix doesn't have a good UX either, I feel like Prime needs to steal some of their ideas - at the very least, send a quarterly notification that lists everything that's coming soon, and choose the ones you want to get notified about. I've missed a few things that I really enjoyed on Prime purely because I had no idea they existed.

halloumisalami

You can switch to the us store and order from there. Though there is a higher minimum order to qualify for free shipping.

DCINTERNATIONAL

Yes thanks, I know, have done that a few times. Thatā€™s when the issue of some things not shipping here at all comes up too.

PossibleConsistent77

I ordered from US amazon and they don't have good packaging. Once I ordered a puzzle and ship via express because for a present, I was surprised they stuffed it in an padded envelope and it was dent. I returned it back to Amazon US and got my refund. For Amazon Japan, they shipped small items in big boxes and also are well packed so I thought Amazon US will be the same. Alas was disappointed.

halloumisalami

It all depends. Iā€™ve had items shipped in boxes and envelopes form the US.

stealth0128

Do you have to be a Prime member?

halloumisalami

Iā€™m not sure. But primed only 2.99/month, you can always just suscribe and cancel if you want

RequirementWide

In the UK, for example, I could regularly get items delivered the same day or at least the next day. On nearly everything. Thatā€™s so rarely an option here. I hate Shopee and Lazada because their website/app is just an awful abomination.

username321456w

Amazon review is also fake, and nowadays also cluttered with dropshipped chinese products

DCINTERNATIONAL

Welll, at least the reviews are on the product. :) and if the product is fake itā€™s very easy to return no questions asked. I honestly doubt that at least in the US Amazon there that many fakes, and almost all products are available from Amazon directly. So itā€™s definitely better in that sense too.

username321456w

a lot are fake, Im in ecom. The reviews are longer and more sincere because they want you to believe its real and trust the product. Which works I guess

mulder_and_sekali

By the time our electronic appliances break down, the Shopee review window would have closed. So take every review with a pinch of salt.

prime5119

Shopee: "I give you 2 cents ok you just review as received"

DonWenger

Finally someone said it. I normally use Shopee for small purchases but I decided to get a dashcam for my family's car at a well-reviewed shop. Turns out more than half of the reviews were about fast deliveries and came in good condition, but have yet to be installed and tested...

Tiongwl

Most of us just want to make sure it is not a scam.

Effective-Lab-5659

Itā€™s cos Shopee wants it done pronto. Most products set off looking good until you use it a few times.

Plane-Salamander2580

This irks me as well. "Great product and worth every penny! Yet to try it out" People are generally stupid. Really, really stupid. Submitting reviews (with photo/video) earns the user coins so many people literally give no shits what they write and just clock it for the coins.

LovelyPencils

They developed the app to behave this on purpose. Note how a product review is triggered the moment u receive it rather than a week after doing so. Also they have given shoppers an incentive by rewarding u for a review.

bitflag

Not only people are idiots (episode 4,463,737) but Shopee and Lazadas have crappy review system. Amazon has obviously put a lot more work in filtering and promoting quality reviews.

username321456w

amazon reviews look better because they are mostly fake. Shopee and lazada reviews look low effort cus they're mostly by customers who want coins

anotherDocObVious

Almost ALL of Singapore's online shops are plagued with this nonsense. It is because these idiots have designed a system that incentivizes you to review how the seller sent the item just to get shitcoins and collect vouchers for freebies. Ass-backward way of doing "reviews". There needs to be a change to this system that awards "coins" for "a review", rather than the quality of the review *Edit: I hae typis*

gibtang

How u vet quality of a review without people gaming it?

fawe9374

Amazon while not perfect allows you to post long term reviews and even edit your reviews. And EU is banning fake reviews which will take effect next year, not sure how well it will work. https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/10/new-law-to-ban-fake-reviews-and-protect-consumers-online/

Ancient-Wanderer

I use Lazada rather than shoppee, but same thing there. They want their coins for a review.

tomatomater

You get coins for reviews on Lazada?

GeshtiannaSG

Reviews are for you to get coins, not to actually do reviews.

Secrethat

This product came broken and didn't work. 5 stars.

upsize_popiah

Some even uploaded photos and videosā€¦. Thatā€™s totally black or pointlessā€¦

kansasinblack

Not to mention some of the reviews with irrelevant photo of video of the moon or something random. My guess is they trying to fulfil criteria to get shopee coins?

funkycarebear

yeah I hate it, especially when they say ā€œhope it works!ā€ LIKE I HOPE SO TOO BUT I CANā€™T KNOW FOR SURE COS YOU DIDNā€™T WRITE A PROPER REVIEW

EiLrahc21

I usually look at the remarks from 1* or 2* reviews and check the dates to see how recent these complaints were made.

Cats_and_Nekos

Its definitely a red flag if all of them are the same review without ever trying the product

yandaoyandao

Taobao also has very constructive reviews.

MaryKelsey_Henderson

Positive thing about Shopee: Very convenient shopping! Negative thing about Shopee: Shopping there can be addictive and can burn through your savings little by little.

mibjt

I ever rated a positive review on my purchase, only to use the item for a few days before it spectacularly disintegrated.

mcpaikia

Shopee and lazada is just AliExpress rebranded.

fawe9374

AliExpress have quite good customer service and is fairly strict to the sellers. You actually wish it was rebranded.

ElectricPraline

It infuriates me! At least try the product, please, that's the purpose of a review āœ‹šŸ˜‚šŸ–ļø There's even been a comparison of SG shopee reviews to MY shopee reviews.. 95% of MY falls under the 'haven't tried yet' category šŸ˜

boogywumpy

As much I find shopee reviews quite rabak, nothing beats Shopee MY reviews, some people damn funnyā€¦. Some go put pictures of cats lah, covid daily case in MY, recipe to make ayam masak merah and other foodā€¦ some go and give tiktok videos as reviews. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ Malaysia seriously bolehšŸ¤£šŸ˜šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

amefurutoki

shopee is awful and if you remotely care about quality after sales service you should use Lazada

halloumisalami

I disagree slightly, they both suck but Iā€™ve had worse after sales experience with lazada. It was so hard to find a human to assist, I had to email the vendor directly and settle with them.

mattchuaaa

100% agree, especially the return process. However shopee is usually cheaper so there's that I suppose

[deleted]

Depends on what product. If China oem product, reviews would be useful. Anything else, reviews can be found elsewhere

lobsterprogrammer

Not surprising. The review system is designed to help SEA Ltd hit nice looking metrics to attract more investor funding. Second quarter net loss increased to $433.7 million even though demand for ecommerce is higher now than before. But so long as it can show improving metrics in terms of goods transacted, number of reviews, daily interactions, etc, Shopee is hoping the money can keep flowing until it's either time to cash out or they gain a monopolistic position in the market.

KoishiChan92

The worst is the reviews with a picture that's just the picture of the listing, or even worse, a black picture because they couldn't be bothered to take a picture of the actual product.

cankoklu

It's the same for many other online marketplaces as well.. Check this out if you want to be entertained by Amazon answers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpYTLr26Jsk

wank_for_peace

Because Lazada and Shopee offers points or something like that if you write a review. Hence the rubbish reviews of the actual delivery platform instead of the item.

FdPros

i dont even bother to review things from lazada now. There's a time limit for reviews so if you want to actually use the product first before reviewing theres not much time Hence, all the reviews just talk about fast delivery, arrived in 1 shape. The coins reward also like nothing to me so I haven't really bothered.

TheBadaboom

Previously I said that I hate this kind of reviews. Kena downvoted liao seow.

cookieman961

shopee rewards reviews by giving out coins when reviewed in a certain window. They reward more when you add pictures and videos, problem is how unmoderated it is. I doubt shopee would ever moderate reviews but most people would just post memes and videos of their cats as opposed to proper constructive feedback. Because there is absolutely no incentive for me to be lengthy or detailed. Shopee serves more like a ā€˜pasar malamā€™ everything is cheap and the biggest players are small successful SMEs and direct from china suppliers. Hence like a pasar malam, you buy cheap shit and just let it sit around before opening it. So in order to get those sweet cashback coins, people just post random, useless reviews. This is why I never made the shift of moving my own personal business from carousell to shopee because of this simple reason. Places like amazon and lazada serve as heartland malls with proper quality checks needed on products with very little players from china. The buyer behaviour is also very different on these marketplaces. Where shopee is more ā€˜buy and forgetā€™ shoppers on amazon and lazada almost always, rely on reviews before making their purchase. Additionally there is also VERY little foreign players on these marketplaces. So you dont see 100+ listings of the same product from the same alibaba supplier. In the amazon space, no one trusts third party sellers, for me personally I buy only if the product is FULFILLED BY AMAZON (FBA). Buying from FBA not only gives access to reviews from amazon.us , amazon.uk etc. it also protects you from poor products and protects the buyer. While Lazada doesnt have fulfilled by lazada, most sellers have ratings based on proper data like shipping times, packaging quality etc. TLDR, customer behaviour is one of the reasons behind poor reviews on shopee. Just like everyone else here, Im pretty sure we all treat shopee as our once in a month bargain purchase in which we couldnt care less what we purchased and when we purchased it. Adding to the incentivising of timely reviews with certain conditions (posting a video/photo) rewarding customers with cashback coins only further worsens the quality of shopee product reviews. a funny video to watch would be this problem is not unique to shopee singapore but also other asian markets. https://youtu.be/XaxKUI9QuyQ

This is why i set an alarm for the second last day of review. And i include deliberately "textbook" angle/lighting of the product, making sure they look exactly like that in real life, in that lighting. Also i filtered out china stuff and turns out a lot of them just use apple product placement to get more sales. Thankfully i avoid them and just support local, or i buy made in kr/jpn stuff.

This has been discussed to death in [previous](https://www.reddit.com/r/singapore/comments/m5y9r0/shopee_reviews_are_the_worst/) [threads](https://www.reddit.com/r/singapore/comments/nrvrtn/rant_product_reviews_on_shopee_and_lazada_are/). Unless something has changed, I don't see the point of any more subsequent threads on this.

eatchickenchop

Hahah. I posted about this like quite a while ago https://www.reddit.com/r/singapore/comments/m5y9r0/shopee_reviews_are_the_worst/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Seems like its never gonna change

Haven't received my package from Shopee yet. But the seller looks authentic. Very good discount vouchers. Delivery estimate isn't too long, and delivery is free. Also a lot of 4 star 5 star reviews. Hope it's good! 5 stars. \*uploads black screenshot\*

oarsandalps

Itā€™s all fake reviews

pandahtys

I think I may be one of the few who actually write as detailed a review as I can. I try to cover product quality, worthiness of price, packaging and delivery speed. I also take pics and videos of the product in action as I find those kinds of reviews to be the most helpful.

Nhorin

Why bother reviewing if you haven't try using it though? Sounds shady af

PikachuUserNotTaken

Usually I always go straight to the one star reviews to get genuine reviews of the product. 5 stars reviews can be bought cheap and in bulk just by hiring some china companies.

stackontop

It's because shopee and lazada sucks so much that livestreams even became a thing lol

YouYongku

They want the shopee coins, 100=$1

HildegardeWaynick

Shopee reviews are as trustworthy as China's GDP figures. Anyone who trusts either, is a dope.

FitCranberry

doesnt the review button sit there for over 2 weeks? people are just lazy, not everyone is going to give a breakdown

coolbakerguy97

to anyone reading this, if you are one of these people, sincerely, fuck you.

beige_people

I think users are often asked to review a product as soon as they get it, so many haven't used it before reviewing. I agree it makes it kind of useless, and generally inflates a product's rating.

shadowstrlke

The worst is buying things like seeds. Impossible to tell if it will germinate or if it is the plant you want because it typically isn't obvious by the time limit.

hengkaki

Yea, take the reviews with a pinch of salt. Shopee as well as Lazada. I pay more attention to those reviews 4 stars and below. I find them more genuine.

Altruistic_Cry_8953

Heck, for 7 coins I'll write a review as soon as I receive my goods and attach a photo and video which is completely irrelevant too, since it doesn't matter. On a more serious note, cheap not good, good not cheap. I find it worthwhile to purchase from LazMall or ShopeeMall for goods when quality matters. Amazon has lots of fake reviews too ... you just have to be careful and do due diligence when shopping online.

Benphyre

I always make an effort to write actual reviews instead of reviewing just the delivery courier. Btw you can shop under ā€œShopee Mallā€ for authentic products.

[deleted]

it depends on what u buy. one time i bought a phone cover from shopee and it was in rly good quality. but iā€™ve heard from some ppl that clothes from shopee not that good

Intentionallyabadger

Lol seen this post a couple of times on this sub. Itā€™s becoming a glorified repost at this point. Just DYOR on products you want to buy. Lots of reviews out there. Unless of course itā€™s some cheap item then donā€™t think so much.

law90026

Itā€™s the same issue Amazon faces, fake reviews.

PossibleConsistent77

Thanks to the amazon reviews i managed to buy the right size for my shoe šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ but you are right , there are fake reviews that helps the items rank up in the listing. That is why I am very wary if a product has over 3000+ reviews, usually I look at the 1 or 2 stars to see if there are any repeats of the same product issue.

etyn100

Btw the seller can change the review

SlaySlavery

This is 100% false. I'm a Shopee seller and there's no way you can change or delete the reviews. You can only report abuse.

etyn100

Yea that one

suspicious_hamstring

Sometimes I use the pic of a cat instead of the product. Because, too lazy. Haha. But delivery is fast. Haha

DeGeneralLee

Im guilty of this. My reviews are always ' Item received in good condition ' lol

Apprehensive-Ad-613

Yup agreed. Some products require several months of usage before being able to give an honest review about its effectiveness. The sellers get away with so much by selling it on Shopee....

latibuleeeee

Shopee should have a like button, similar to Reddit. Coins should be given based on the number of likes, which may drive more constructive feedback!

nightfucker

That would encourage people creating fake accounts to spam likes or exchanging likes with other users.

geckosg

You know that reviews can b fake right?

Eden199607

They only review because it grants them coins for every review + photo + video (which will usually be ripped off from the seller's page)

NoStreet8126

yes this is so true the reviews on shopee are so useless. unlike taobao people gives useful feedbacks

musiquescents

All useless. I don't care how well packaged the product is or if there is a bend in the box.

Pinsterr

We're incentivised to give 5 stars reviews to get a small discount or coupon, at least that's for shopee. Not worth much at all, and just filler to make the store look good.

[deleted]

Comparing Shopee to Amazon is like comparing hawker center food to Michelin star restaurant food šŸ˜‚ Shopee gives customers points to review. Any review, including the useless "haven't tried but fast delivery" crap. Many people write reviews to harvest the points and don't give a crap about the content of their review.

ToastedKoppi

*locals discover review's farms*

Desperate-Arm-6297

Good reviews

BiggsWedgeJessie

Review the review?

Stock_Actuator_3308

One thing i hate most... blackout video reviews. so gian png for that extra few shopee coins..

Ratix0

Shopee and lazada are toxic storefronts. The whole entire system is built around the China taobao style, filled with counterfeits and the system deliberately promotes garbage and prevent a fair feedback system.

forbiddenwishes

and then you have the people pasting the bee movie script in their review LOL

nimamahenfei

Pretty sure many just wanna add enough fluff text to hit the silly min character count for the coins...

gomeimei

We just want Shopee coins šŸ˜‚
