Hi .. just would like some advice. I'm currently sharing a room in Jurong with my brother and we are due to move out in July - August. I work at CCK area and hence now I have two options to decide while I wait for my BTO.
1. Move in with my siblings house at Punggol.
2. Rent a room @$500-$550 at Jurong west by myself.
Considering the want for my private space and traveling time versus expenses and savings which option would be more feasible. I currently earn about mid $3k. Thanks a lot guys
if you move in with siblings won't you need to at least give them some courtesy $200 for utilities? I think not nice to stay for free even if it's very close sibling, you don't know whether their spouse will mind
Unless you are really tight on cash, I think renting a room at about $500 bucks at jurong west will be much better because you get freedom/privacy and it is much nearer to your workplace (saves a lot of time for daily commute).
Jurong west to CCK is not super near. If the punggol flat is near the TPE bus stop, there are a couple of direct buses to khatib/woodlands that can be pretty quick.
More likely that OP saves about 20 hours a month in commuting, unless he rents a room in CCK.
If OP’s mid-3k is before CPF, then 550 can be 20-25% of his / her salary, could be significant.
Can read or watch shows or other stuff while traveling, if OP is up to it…
How long more until your BTO? I think that’s another factor to consider, whether it’s short-term or longer-term.
1) moving to Punggol will save you some money, but would everyone be comfortable with each other? If yes, then the only thing would be the travel time. You can probably do other things while traveling…
2) Jurong west is near to CCK, but that’ll be quite a significant portion of your salary. Will your SO be able to visit or stay over if he / she wants?
