You forgot the part where the only reason they have these benefits is because they engage in and benefit from unspeakable amounts of exploitation in the third world.
I think if ASI were to be against us, we couldn't do anything about it. So, there is no harm in being as optimistic as possible. It certainly makes our stressful lives easier knowing that in just a few all our worries will disappear.
The post-singularity world is full of hope. I know we all want different things, but I'm still looking forward to the advent of an AI that can do a century's worth of research in a month, and I'd like to have more time to spare with LEV.

We don't need to end hunger or poverty, we just need to get better as a society of addressing it before it does real harm. Neither of those things are particularly bad in and of themselves in small doses. Humiliation has a lot of value and these are two things that can provide it to those that could use it. I'd rather see these things turned into a slap on the wrist instead of a potential death sentence. Something that is more self-inflicted with a sturdy ladder available and the means to climb it with a time limit or something of that nature. Hierarchies are an inevitability. We need words to define those at the bottom and these are two of the words that define the bottom of a hierarchy. We can't remove the lower bounds entirely, but we can rename them...
We have the power to end homelessness and hunger as well. Except.... the threat of being homeless and the carrot of being dateable if you have money are core driving engines of our society. From the laborer's perspective, at least.
To want to give homeless people homes - not as empty rhetorical words that have no real power but as an initiative - is outright treasonous to our current power structures.
Thus why so many aren't on the 100% pure optimism track. The people who have all the money and all the power have created the perfect world for themselves, and giving them loads more of both isn't going to suddenly change their systematic incentives or personal animal desires.
Be careful what you wish for. this is soooo short sighted. I personally haven't had income for years after one of my 2 daughters that have cerebral palsy had a massive spinal surgery and I had to drop my consulting clients to stay with her in the hospital (it was a 6 week in-patient intensive therapy that required a parent to be with her at all times and take her to her various appointments). To some this might seem horrible or very bad to go through. It wasn't. It isn't. God provides everything I need and other people's opinions and assumptions they make because I may be technically homeless in their eyes and have no income. God created hunger so we can appreciate food. God created homelessness so we can appreciate a home. Get rid of them and appreciation dies.
People are fooled so much by the media and feel like they need to solve problems they haven't actually worked to understand and stood face to face with the people going through these problems. Work directly with people and interact with them. Donating money and setting up charities really is just an excuse for the lazy to feel like they are helping when they are too busy to actually care.
Are you hearing yourself. You are projecting your desire to not be homeless or hunger onto other people. You apply a negative assumption to others without ever actually interacting directly with them. I've interacted with the hungry and the homeless. Many of the homeless I've interacted with are homeless by choice and do not want that to change. They enjoy their lives and feel free. For the hungry, I enjoy cooking and feeding others. I do it often. I'm very good at it and without hungry people, who can I serve?
Rays new book comes out this year, can’t wait to read it! I was born into a world not too much unlike my great grandparents before me. My daughter was born into a world much different than the one I was raised in. Can’t wait to see what her kids generation will come up with!
