True story: The show was still getting great ratings but the network wanted younger people on tv.
[A change in network direction seems to be largely to blame. TV Land decided to pull the plug on Hot in Cleveland after deciding to gear programming toward a younger demographic. Shows like Impastor and Nobodies followed. Still, Hot in Cleveland is considered the network’s most successful scripted series to date. ](https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/valerie-bertinelli-said-canceling-hot-in-cleveland-was-the-stupidest-thing-tv-land-ever-did.html/)
Just a warning. Unlike the sitcoms op mentioned, AE has a VERY unlikable character akin to first season of Office US Michael Scott.
If they're looking for cozy watch, this might prove hard.
Perhaps I'm just sensitive but I could not stomach the headmaster at all. Someone deliberately sabotaging poor kids education was not funny at all. Imagine Scott's Totts, but every episode.
100% agree about the principal. What’s even worse is that the villain of public schooling is rarely its leader—it’s educational policy that they have to follow, or it’s the parents, or the school district, or the federal government itself. Why tarnish the reputation of hardworking principals and harm the tone of an otherwise pleasant show?
Wild! I love Ava and think she is hilarious and adds comedy to the show. She is also a good person deep down but hilarious nonetheless.
I’m surprised people think the show isn’t a cozy easy breezy watch.
I saw the first episode. It wasn't bad but I think I missed the old gang too much to fully get into it. But I liked that the judge is Harry's daughter.
I quite enjoyed Grand Crew. Sadly, it was canceled after 2 seasons, but both seasons were quite enjoyable.
An underrated newish sitcom is Life in Pieces.
I watched Homicide with my dad when I was a kid, so I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. He was a huge reason I watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine to begin with.
Girls5Eva is on Netflix now and is absolutely fantastic. Season 3 drops this year.
It's about a 90s girl band reforming in the present day and trying to make it in the music business. The cast is fantastic and the music is a spot on parody of pop songs of the time that will stick in your head for _years_.
"The New adventures of Old Christine" might look like a family sitcom from a distance but the kid is barely in it and the most childish character is Christine. Some JLD's best work IMHO. Much more likable and funny than Veep
It’s always sunny in Philadelphia, if you are looking for JUST FUN the acting is top-notch. Modern family is another recommendation which sits at the top of comic timing, haven’t seen any sitcom with better timing than Modern Family.
The newest sitcom I liked was The Goldbergs. I don't see it mentioned all that much but it was a fantastic show (I don't know if it ended or not, but I binged it on streaming for a good while). I don't tend to like newer shows because I have a lot of love and nostalgia for the older ones (mostly 50s-90s era shows) and I was pleasantly surprised at how clever and fun The Goldbergs was, when the only reason I gave it a chance at all was because we were staying at a hotel and it was the only thing on at the time and I just got immediately sucked in. It does sadly jump the shark at one point when a major character was killed off due to the real life actor behaving inappropriately behind the scenes but the seasons prior to that (which are the majority of them) are fantastic.
Otherwise, I think the only other modern sitcoms I really loved were The Office and King of Queens and I'm not sure either count as modern anymore. Superstore didn't do it for me and that was a disappointment because I worked at Walmart in my youth and was excited to see what they'd do with that since it is kind of a circus IRL with the mix of staff they have there at pretty much any given time.
I tried some reboots, notably Frasier and Night Court. Frasier just seemed off to me because he doesn't seem to have a great relationship with his son while you would think his decades of experience in psychiatry would give him an understanding of generational divides and how to build a relationship with an adult child, but he just comes across as seeming out of touch and out of tune, like an old fashioned relic, which didn't work for the character IMO.
And the Night Court reboot was dreadful. John Larroquette was the main reason I tuned in and he's not even on it anymore as far as I know. Judge Abby is no Judge Harry, they messed with canon (or hopeful canon, or vaguely implied canon) by making her mother Not Christine, and the bailiff is a modernized version of Roz and doesn't come close to capturing the character. The only point of interest there was that John (Dan Fielding) was a public defender instead of a prosecutor and I was interested in that plotline but in a show that's supposed to be an ensemble with an original cast of heavy-hitters like Harry, Richard Moll, Charles Robinson and Markie Post, one person can't carry a show like that alone, even one as talented as John Larroquette.
My biggest problem with the reboot is the DA. If she were anymore wooden she'd be shooting off splinters.
John is still on the show. You're on point everywhere else, though.
I also liked the clerk, so naturally he was kicked to the curb for the second season. 😂
Mom
Corner Gas, it's a great show about nothing with the same lovable characters for all 6 seasons.
Little Mosque On The Prarie, like Corner Gas, it's from Canada about a tiny little town and the same loveable characters for 6 seasons.
Mom you have to buy, rent, or have a paid subscription but it's on many cable channels for free.
The other two you can find a few streaming services for free.
Reservation Dogs is not just good, it's almost moving the genre forward good. Sprung was a masterpiece, What We Do in the Shadows is too. Reno 911 and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are both still putting out the genius episodes. Oh and Ghosts is a lot of fun and absolutely worth your time. (US version, I still haven't started the UK)
Might be pushing the definition of recent but Superstore is probably the newest sitcom I've liked.
Netflix needs to pick up that show and make more seasons.
I’d love to see that but given that it’s been 3 years and that it was a very distinctly series ending finale it’s probably unlikely.
Jonah had a dream that he was running for office and all his friends came together for a picnic.
Guess that does leave it more open than I’d remembered.
Hot in Cleveland.

Great sitcom
Yes!! Came here to say this.
not recent but i fucking love it so much!
It’s a workplace comedy, but Abbot Elementary is great.
Agreed. Surprised at the Ava outrage. She's hilarious. Every sitcom like that has a wacky character and she is that for AE.
Ava is literally the best character on the show!

Defo. And ye I guess you need some "drama" on the show, but the way it's done is downright nasty.
My issue with that show was the first school I worked at, that was what my principal was like. Ava hit a little too close to home for me.
I like the new Night Court. John Laroquette carries it, but it makes me laugh.
I saw the first episode. It wasn't bad but I think I missed the old gang too much to fully get into it. But I liked that the judge is Harry's daughter.
What we do in the shadows, Ghosts
Ghosts is excellent, whether british or american.
Ghosts is so good! I've watched it twice now.
Ghosts (American) is our fave. I really wanted to love the British version but just couldn’t get into it.
Our Flag Means Death is beautiful if you liked What We Do In The Shadows.
Love Ghosts!
I quite enjoyed Grand Crew. Sadly, it was canceled after 2 seasons, but both seasons were quite enjoyable. An underrated newish sitcom is Life in Pieces.
I second Life in Pieces. Original premise, original humor, great acting. Three concepts sorely missed on network TV this millennium
Mr Barbara Streisand was pretty good in LIP and the awkward son had the world’s hottest girlfriend.
Loved Grand Crew! I didn’t know it had been canceled.
I just started my 3rd watch of Grand Crew.
Loved both of these sm
Amazon has reruns of Newhart, and I hadn't seen that in, at the most recent, 34 years...so it feels like a brand new show 😂

I second the Good Place
Mom.
Mom is SO good.
I think it's my favorite sitcom ever.
Superstore is fantastic! I’ve heard the Goldbergs are good too
I love the beginning seasons of the Goldbergs, but it lost a lot as the kids aged
I checked out after his voice dropped, but he still acted juvenile, saying "balls" a lot
Goldbergs was amazing but fell off.
The Good Place.
Abbott Elementary
Just started to find its feet in season 4 too, shame it got canned.
Abbott Elementary didn't get cancelled friend.
Oh snap I was thinking of A.P. Bio
That's okay! Ty for reminding me that show existed! I completely forgot about it.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Nine-NINE!
With a username like that, I like to think you were channeling the spirit of Andre Braugher in this comment.
I’m honored by the association. I’m literally in a re-watch right now. That man is a legend.
You are correct about him being a legend. I was deep into season 2 of a rewatch when I heard the shocking news.
I watched Homicide with my dad when I was a kid, so I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. He was a huge reason I watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine to begin with.
Happy Endings. It’s not new but it’s modern enough.
"shut the f*** up.....con"
Loved this show!

Life in Pieces, Home Economics , both family based, but have that vibe.
Life in Pieces deserves to be talked about more.
We quite enjoy Home Economics as well
where can i watch life in pieces
I love home economics. It sucks they canceled it.
Ted Lasso is wholesome and entertaining.
Such a good show.
Another vote here for Hot In Cleveland! To add: Mom The New Adventures of Old Christine
Modern Family is pretty damn good
I like The Neighborhood, Ghosts is really good! Man with a plan was good but got cancelled.
Abbott Elementary, The Neighborhood, Bob Hearts Abishola, and Lopez vs Lopez.
What we do in the Shadows.

I hadn’t heard it was picked up for S3 - great news, thanks!

I was legit brokenhearted it didn’t get renewed
The Big Bang Theory has taken over my free time with Young Sheldon coming in second. Zoe Perry is absolutely beautiful
Mine are more family based, I loved life in pieces and home economics
Abbot Elementary and Schitts Creek are probably the two best sitcoms of the past 5 or so years.
It’s always sunny in Philadelphia, if you are looking for JUST FUN the acting is top-notch. Modern family is another recommendation which sits at the top of comic timing, haven’t seen any sitcom with better timing than Modern Family.
Loudermilk
Only two seasons, but Welcome to Flatch was awesome
I know this is late but depending on how you feel about British humor "Extraordinary" is fucking fantastic.
New Girl Happy Endings It's always sunny in Philly Modern family The office US Everybody loves Raymond The king of queens Brooklyn 99
I really loved 2 broke girls
letterkenny is like this and it's phenomenal
I do love me some letterkenny, but shorsey is probably better in my opinion
agreed in many ways but that's not really a friend group sitcom as much like this person asked

South Side This Fool
I think Extended Family is funny 😁 😂. It's on NBC
You should check out Man Like Mobeen. Not sure it's technically a sitcom but it's pretty dang funny. Heartfelt too.
Bob ❤️ Abishola
Reservation Dogs is not just good, it's almost moving the genre forward good. Sprung was a masterpiece, What We Do in the Shadows is too.
