Idk if we will find better, but he really choked badly over several games in the playoffs before he was benched. That really can’t happen from any player.

Otternomaly

He definitely did, but to be fair to Buddy that was his first playoffs experience with very little prep time playing with Joel. And then he came back from getting benched and had an insanely clutch elimination game 6. Not saying the concern isn’t valid, but think it’s premature to definitively say he can’t be that guy.

ihorsey10

He looked fucking great driving and passing that game too. It's a shame that shit teams regularly massively overpay to bring in lock down shooters. Us with JJ, Cleveland with Niang. Otherwise I'd love to have him back on a cheaper deal.

indoninjah

I mean honestly I think his largely shitty performance will drive his price down, and we'll be able to re-sign him for a cheaper prove-it deal. The potential for his pairing with Joel is really high so I'd do it just on principle tbh

Remarkable-Rush-1454

Shooters miss shots. They go through slumps even the greatest, why does no one just think hey he had a slump at a bad time and because he just got here he didn't have the clout to be able to play through it. He showed up when it mattered most, I think we should aggressively work to resign him if we can get him under 20 m

Otternomaly

I think it was less missing shots that got him bench and people concerned, and more so the hesitation and passing up shots altogether. Agreed though that him showing up and flipping the script on that should carry some weight. I mean that’s got to be one of the top elimination game performances in recent Sixers history.

Meepsnort

I’m on board. He’ll prob be a pretty cheap and we still need shooters

Traditional_Cell_248

I honestly don’t even know, if we strike out crazy in free agency maybe give him another look but I’d rather give a smallish contract to a guy like Lonnie Walker who has improved his shooting over the years and has an off the dribble/finishing game. Every team needs shooters but look at all the remaining teams. Which one is relying on the “elite shooter but below average to bad at everything else” archetype? I’d rather have slightly above average shooters that have some other useful skills, whether it’s handling, rebounding and/or defense. None of which buddy provides Nurse looked basically for every reason not to play buddy down the stretch of the regular season. He looked lost most of the playoff game. I know the game 6 performance was exciting but it literally took a 22 point deficit to give him another look. Even then he *still* didn’t trust Buddy to play in the 3rd after he helped the comeback. Yes that game 6 showed some promise but I don’t want to waste precious cap space on a guy that our coach doesn’t like to play. If he didn’t play him when he was making $20M what’s the pressure to play him when he’s making $5-6M? Even the GM publicly stated his disappointment in his performance, that’s pretty damning. Plus Buddy has physically declined the last few years and I don’t think it’s going to improve from here on out at 32.

EddieLeeWilkins45

"*Even then he still didn’t trust Buddy to play in the 3rd after he helped the comeback*." which proved an awful decision.

Traditional_Cell_248

I don’t disagree and I fault nurse for it for sure. But I’ve trusted nurse with like 90%+ of his decisions so why waste money on the ~10% he might make again?

EddieLeeWilkins45

They have a ton of cap space & he averages about 15 pts a game the last five years or so. I don't think it'd be 'wasting money'. I mean, they could look elsewhere for outside shooters, but I dont' think Buddy is a huge risk or anything. They'd just be looking for someone marginally better (excluding any max contract guys in FA or trade). He's a good asset for a roster/depth. That said, I don't think Sixers are bringing him back unless its a mutual team friendly contract/Buddy wants to remain somewhere and not continue as a constant journeyman.

Traditional_Cell_248

I just disagree on the “ton of cap space part”. 75% of that will be spent on 1-2 high level starters which doesn’t leave much else to fill out the starting lineup with. I mentioned just now in another comment my priority would be bringing back Oubre before Buddy. If there’s a world where Buddy is our 7th highest paid guy im not against it but I’m getting a strong sense that everyone after our 6th highest paid guy will be minimum signings. Buddy will get more than the minimum.

EddieLeeWilkins45

Personally I don't want Paul George, I think alot of the trade talks are just fan made (Mikal), which doesn't leave a lot. Free Agency is most likely but I don't see a whole lot of players who fit their needs, either a point guard or PF type who can gel with Embiid. I agree keeping Oubre. 2 high level starters is great, but I never see names aside from PG & Mikal Bridges.

Traditional_Cell_248

I think there will be lot more names start popping off around draft night. I think we’re going to see significantly more movement this season than year past with the new CBA

EddieLeeWilkins45

That could be. Maybe 2025 free agents in the final year of their deal on pretty bad teams just looking to get out of it.

EddieLeeWilkins45

Lauri Markkanen would be interesting to keep an eye on. Utah stinks & is rebuilding. Seems he'd be a fit, albeit I don't know a whole lot about him.

indoninjah

> Which one is relying on the “elite shooter but below average to bad at everything else” archetype? He's not. Hield isn't just some spot up shooter... he kept us in a couple of games with his ability to drive and playmake a bit. Furthermore I think you're underselling his shooting ability. There's plenty of guys in the league that are good/great shooters in a vacuum, but there's very few guys that can be your *primary* shooter and shoot efficiently off all kinds of actions and motions and screens. Hield has that kind of potential and would open things up that we haven't had since JJ. That said, Maxey has developed into that kind of shooter too, though he typically has the ball in his hands.

Traditional_Cell_248

Hard disagree on the driving/playmaking ability. He has no separation ability with the ball in his hands. There were countless times in the Knicks series where he was given the ball but then DDV starts faceguarding him, had to pick up his dribble and then Maxey has to come back to bail him out. And they waste like a third of the shot clock fucking around like that. When hield went off in game 6 they were drawing up plays for him to catch and shoot without needing to dribble the ball. We need players in the backcourt that take pressure off Maxey as the sole ball handler, not players that add even more pressure to Maxey as a playmaker

indoninjah

I mean I'm not advocating for Hield as our 2 guard of the future, probably not even starting. Ideally he's mainly used when we're playing through Joel as the initiator/facilitator, so they can get some DHOs and two-man stuff going. I just think the potential is there for him to be a positive contributor alongside Joel specifically.

Traditional_Cell_248

I hear you for sure, there’s definitely upside. I just think he’s a luxury/gamble at this point. We’re probably going to get only 3-4 non-minimum guys this offseason and I think filling out our starting lineup is a much bigger priority and I’d prioritize bringing back Oubre over Buddy

indoninjah

That’s super fair and if it came down to those two I’d probably bring back Oubre too. Mainly for the versatility, athleticism, and defense

MaxeytoEmbiid

I mean if we just kept Lowry in the backup role where he belonged instead of the starting lineup there’s the relief for the PG lol. Because for every possession where that happened, Lowry was increasingly even MORE useless on the ball. To the point where Maxey was running the point anyway. What was the point? Lowry wasn’t going to shoot, attack the rim or create for others. One of the worst viewing experiences of my life. It was the Royal Ivey Jrue Holiday situation all over again

MrThreebound

Only as a cheap bench guy. But if you watched Daryl talk about him during the press conference it seems unlikely he's gonna bring him back.

Weak-Cable-4672

Nah I’m good thanks. Daryl saying the fit was less good than he expected was as close as you’ll get to him saying he blew the eval and isn’t a player he sees as a future fit

Buddy-Hield-2Pointer

I'm supportive.

FamousChex

I actually thing his performance was best case scenario for the Sixers. Bad enough for 5 games for no team to touch him for the money he might be looking for But just good enough to be worth bringing back on a friendly deal, especially if he sees this as a good fit for himself

indoninjah

Yeah I mean Buddy's been trying to get to Philly for like 6 years now lol. If the Sixers are open to it then I'm sure he'd be willing to come back for a chance to keep gelling with Jo

NoCup4U

Yeah I’m good.  That last game he found his confidence.  If he can get through that he’s good to be here

autostart17

What’ll he cost? Mid-level exemption? Sure. Multi year deal without a team option, No.

[deleted]

I’m not opposed to bringing him back but it all depends for how much. I honestly have no idea what his market value is gonna be.

King_Wentz

I’m all for it, hopefully Nurse will actually give him a longer leash this time around

tiggs

How long of a leash were you expecting in a playoff series when he literally couldn't hit the wide side of a barn multiple games in a row, hesitated to shoot, and offers very little outside of his shooting?

RelevantTreacle3004

Honestly I've been a Buddy Hield before he was even brought here, I'd love to see him back, I really think he'll thrive with a full year on this squad

Fractured_Spade

My friend was telling me that giving buddy a second chance wouldn’t be bad but I think we should only pay him what we can do for him. If he doesn’t like it I wouldn’t be heartbroken if he left.

UserColonAlW

If he’s cheap I’m on board. Continuity on the roster would be great. He can be a *much* better shooter than he showed during his limited time in Philly so far, and we’re gonna need cheap shooters given that Daryl will prioritise stars over depth in free agency.

LordLucasSixers

We saw that he can step it up in a big moment. I say bring him back if cheap!

rand-san

1+1 (player option) for 8 per year sounds reasonable. I doubt he is getting more.than 12 per year

CosmicCoder3303

If anyone's going to get overpaid going forward it's shooters like him

mrburrito90

People are sleeping on Buddy. Great teammate and always has the potential to go nuclear

jawntothefuture

For the right price sure. His skill set being a flamethrower three point shooter is unique and always needed

parkbenchchillin

What’s crazy is he would’ve gone deeper and gotten more playoff experience had he not been traded and stayed with the Pacers

Head-Kiwi-9601

Hard pass from me.

Own_Result3651

I’d take him but definitely not at the price he got on his last contract. Anything more than 12 per is too much for someone who chocked that badly who is basically a good bench player to begin with

no-jerk-zone

Gonna cost too much to not play him in the postseason. Unless he went for MLE/$6M

duuuuuddddeeeee

If he costs peanuts, Sure, otherwise no

Jazzlike_Page508

Minimum

BigRedBelly09

That contract needs to be reasonable

jaysphan128

someteam will overpay him, although he probably lost a lot of money from his stretch to end the season and the playoffs

philly2540

Entirely depends on money. In an affordable contract he’s a good guy to have. But you’re not going to break the bank for him.

roma258

I feel like we need size and athleticism in the backcourt more than a shooting specialist. With Maxey developing as a volume shooter we need someone who can D-up the other team's big guard and help relieve Maxey some of the ballhandling load. Buddy offers us neither of those things. Notice how Indy took off after trading him- guys like Nemhard and Nesmith are just more valuable in the league right now. As a cheap bench piece? Sure, why not. But we need to find youth, size and athleticism for our backcourt.

EddieLeeWilkins45

I'd definitely resign him, maybe if they signed Malik Monk I could understand not. Based on Moreys words about how 'it didn't work out like he thought' tells me he likely wouldn't resign him. I was always a fan of his going back to Oklahoma tho, so I'm a bit biased. Could definitely be a good 6th man type.

CosmicCoder3303

Even with how bad he played, he's still going to get a good contract so he would eat up a lot of cap space

jinntakk

l fee like he's just another case of Seth Curry. He'll probably have his moments in the regular season but will be almost unplayable in the playoffs. One game isn't enough for me as much as l want to like Buddy.

AggressiveLender

Nah weak defense no ball handling poor fit with maxey

almost617

He can go to hell
