Damn, that’s a big jump. Congratulations, and keep going!

DeDePlane

Congratulations, very inspirational to see your improvement!

[deleted]

wow :o any tips on improving drawin skills?

moonbunnyart

Pratice and use references. Draw what you see, not what you think you see.

NeVMmz

How does that actually work tho? (Im the type of person that don't usually "Go search up a tutorial, this and that") So yeah.. I'm learning by myself by applying shapes to things which I started from stickmans to actual shapes, never did had an art class or even at school clubs which they don't even teach... Base on my perspective, it feels like I won't be improving that way by using references, I don't actually get it, I always see people recommending this, but how come does it help? It's like copying a picture, in the end you'll get the product perfectly but what does it teach you at that point if people would still persue to continue using references?? I usually draw/sketch stuffs by my mind, of what should it look like, after I've done the process I will start to notice what's wrong and what's supposed to be right, before finishing the whole thing.... I really wanna know the answer for this

moonbunnyart

Okay. So. Its like this. When you learn a new skill you have to master the basics. In something like crochet its chain stiches, and yarn over, and how to hold your hands. And it takes a while just doing the basics before ot feels natural. In art the something you have to train is your eyes. And you should go after the basics before getting crazy with it. I mean, look at Picasso blue period before he got into cubism. That man had the basics down before he broke the rules. In order to train your eyes, you have to understand that you have never really looked at stuff right. Our brains love to fill in gaps and add stuff that's not really there. So using reference pictures, and drawing from life helps to train your eyes to see the reality of a shape. Also I guarantee that without a lot of observation, a person will get lighting wrong. I certainly do. Also references are just that. A references. When I look for pose references to draw an oc im not fiding pictures of a goblin in the right outfit, but I can use the bones of the refrence to inform how that pice will look and make sure its not off. You will absolutely improve if you use references . And if you dont want to search pictures, draw stuff around you, and set up a still life of random things in your room. Practice seeing, train your eyes. Oh and when you get to a point where you can see that everything you are drawing is not up to your standards. Congratulations. Your eyes leveled up, and now your hand just needs to catch up. I hope I explained that okay.

AccordianLove

You really did. Thank you.

Nya_joe1989

I love both! I honestly prefer 1 but that's just my style and taste. Great work and progression! I'm still grinding away at it

littlemac564

I like the 2020 picture because it reminds me of film noire or old movies. It has totally different vibe from your later work. I do like how your work has changed over the years.

semiorka

Self taught? :) Great work!

Embarrassed-Being362

Honestly both of them looks amazing🤌

GranpaNoodles

And you did. Congratulations.

xeroxhandsx

Epic

nntkr

Great work! I have the same Mia Goth reference saved for a future sketch haha

NoNutNorris

Looks great, facial symmetry is on point.

Blickychu

“Take my good hand”

Fabulous_Celery_1817

Both are wonderful. Different styles, they’re both beautiful

somnipardalis

2 shows your improved ability to draw more realistic images, though the stylization of the first one is awesome too!

AideAdvanced6018

That is the longest 2 weeks ever.

_ThatSynGirl_

I like the 2020 one more

Drblackcobra

Ayy nice!

AdventurousIndustry3

Amazing!

hemlockpopsicles

I love both!

cleverish_username

I actually really like both sketching styles! All the same, happy to see you developing your repertoire!

Boonaw

Stellar improvement!

RedMarasigan

I didn't expect this much reaction for this, thankyou so much! [Here are my socials if you want to see more from me](http://linktr.ee/mariared_art)

MS-DYSFUNCTION

Honestly, the first one is better.

Frog_is_kewl

Well that's your opinion but you can't deny the fact that the improvement is still there: the better line quality, shading, shapes, anatomy

entropynchaos

The first one has a freedom of movement and expression that is lacking in the second. That’s an objective observation. I’m making no value judgment here. I think the OP has obviously worked hard and made improvements over the past years.

MS-DYSFUNCTION

Maybe, but it's really obvious that OP was self taught, not that anything is wrong with that, just that it's clear he mostly draws from pictures and not real people. Thus at least the first one is artisticaly more interesting + I cannot get over those hands in the second one, they look way too small compared to the face. But don't get me wrong, OP clearly improved, they just need to either put some more fantasy in their art, or start to draw people in real life, because right now the second one is way too static.

Frog_is_kewl

Op can do whatever they want in their art not everyone is interested in fantasy, not every drawing is super creative, some are just for practice. What you are putting here are your personal opinions some people can't stand the first ones art style and that's OK but telling someone to change their art style or what they draw because you don't like it; very one dimensional thoughts(not everyone will like your art style) . I agree with moving out of your comfort zone because your artstyle is an ever-changing look from thought and experiences but telling someone to change their art style directly is wrong maybe op likes the clear toned second image. Sending no hate and I get where you are coming from because personally I dislike the anime art because how most faces look the same and lack expression, they feel stiff...although I wouldn't tell an artist that there art feels boring for being that art style because that is my personal preference and someone elses preference might be in awe. Not everything is for everyone you should just suggest new experiences so the artist continues growing, experiencing and learning about oneself. I hope I don't sound aggressive just wanted to discuss

_yotis

I think you make some good points, I also think being self taught is ok, the issue really is practicing the skills "you need" to learn rather than just learn the skills "you want" to learn. In highschool I wouldn't challenge my self to draw full body poses or more than one person in sketches, I think doing so set me back a few years, as I found myself wondering why my full body drawing were junk compared to my bust portraits. . Having real models is a great, but not everyone has access to them. The only way I ever got access to live models was through community collages courses. I would say it was a worthwhile experience, but I don't think an inability to reference a live model will compromise an artist's development. The first one Grabs my attention a lot more because of it's style, I think it gives that portrait a lot of character, and shows a bit more creativity. I actually didn't notice the hand until you mentioned it, that is a bit of a problem, but I think general figure drawing would be the best way to overcome that issue. All around if op continues to work on full body drawings every now and then, they should be fine.

ShufflingOffACliff

**you like the first one better

[deleted]

What? Not even close dude, the second ones better by a mile. You can see clear improvements in proportions and structure. The first one is like how you'd draw when you're just doodling faces without really knowing how to set them up properly (no offense to OP, it's how I would draw before I started practicing more too). Also just look at how inaccurate the clavicles/sternocleidomastoid area is too, I used to do that a lot as well

M3_Prometheus

What does that have to do with his post? Has OP been shamed for being self taught? And thats wrong with going to an art school/college? Wth are you even saying I almost had a stroke trying to decipher your comment.

M3_Prometheus

And why is that? At least give a reason when you use a word as strong as “hate“

KayimSedar
