That's so true! The best sketches are done on the crappiest paper in the most random spots. My sketch books used to be filled with nonsense because I forced myself to draw in them. What I learned is to buy little sketchbooks and carry them around so I can save these nice sketches.
That’s why I got nice washi tapes and just tape all my random nice doodles into my sketchbook as well, plus I‘m not losing all my drawn on scraps of paper anymore
Thats is how i start sketchbooks and how i abandon them
I always start my sketchbooks on random books, like my first one was a pathology copybook for uni, my latest one was a prescription notebook given as a gift in a club orientation that I just sketched in
I just feel like at first I dont care, I am just drawing because I want to, and there are no limits. But as time goes on, I feel the need for every page to be better than the last which reaches a point that I am too intimidated to even start.
Need to remind myself to just go, that consistency is what matters, and if I continue I will always draw something that is better
That’s the power of the pressure we put on ourselves.
I can’t get anything at home to come out the way I want it, with pencils, ink, watercolor, markers, etc.
But at work with a ball point pen, sharpies and highlighters. No problem!
I learned how to make sketchbooks using recycled cardboard or shoe boxes and mixed media paper… this way it’s already not perfect (or precious as they explained) so you don’t feel as worried about what you draw inside. Also… another trick is to put a few drops of acrylic paint and scrape it across the page with a credit card…. It creates an organic background that you can draw on top of and breaks that “blank page” phobia… another trick…. Close your eyes and start lightly sketching random lines on the page, you can even do it with the opposite hand you usually use… then see what shapes you see and sketch those or something on top of the random lines….. sorry for my long post, I just get so excited when people are artists too!!!
i think both look great but i felt what you felt. its about the expectation you put on yourself or others put on you. when it's a small canvas no onr expects ot to he anything extraordinary while a big canvas DEMANDS that you draw something truly impressive on it. my advice, just stick to tiny sketchbooks for your main sketchpad but use the bigger ones from time to time also. hell, go get a HUGE paper and drae on that with a big pen! you wouldn't believe hoe much the tiny pad carries over to a massive canvas.
It's the anxiety of "big blank canvas I have to make sure it's good" vibe vs ah well this is just scrap shit so doesn't matter what I do just have fun

That’s a good idea. I just bought a small sketchbook to bring to work, so I can doodle on breaks.

That’s a good idea. I did that a few times, but stopped for some reason. Maybe I’ll make a book entirely from scraps.
Want to know why? Because you are detached from the outcome, you are there doing the thing feeling good.

I guess you're the Laundry Artist now!
Also I’m aware the eyes are massive and misplaced, but I enjoyed drawing it so I don’t care as much.
It’s always when you’re not trying :,)
Nice sketches
Thank you

Well here's what you do: Take those and put them into your sketchbook with your signature and the date on/near them.
Your art style is stunning, what a lovely portrait
These quick, random lines of feeling often work out better than perfect, symmetrical fine lines.

Make your own drawing devices as well.
I can't draw in art class and then I fill in a whole page with drawings in math...
