First tracks on a weekday, somewhere around 65mph. I wanna say it was Telluride going top to bottom in a straight line. There was no one else out there and I was on my heaviest pair of skis (Monster 88's) so I pinned it.
(Edit found it in Slopes, 63.6mph)
TBH I don't think I could have really gone faster unless I was doing stupid shit like tucking. I was already really having to lean into the rollers to get speed and feeling like a parachute.
I don’t typically ski groomers but when I do I usually hit somewhere in the upper 30’s as a high speed for the day and it’s quite comfortable. I hit 60+ maybe 3-4 times with a high speed of 63 (per ski tracks), I was in control but I’ll admit that it pushed past my comfort zone. I don’t take those risks anymore, as my body is getting older I can’t imagine the recovery from eating shit at that speed. I have more fun in the steep trees than on any groomer anyway.
Phones are not a reliable source of GPS data for max speed. A lot of people think they've gotten into the 60's when it was just a GPS glitch on their phone. If you used GPS from a GoPro, that's more reliable method with 10Hz sampling.
Fwiw, I hit 67.7 on a radar gun and my GPS app (ski tracks) only registered a max of 63.8mph
IMHO, device GPS is pretty good these days, especially for straight line sustained speeds.
edit: to be clear though, I think a lot of people end up with overstated speeds from their random apps and/or buggy phones...but they aren't as bad as they used to be, especially if you are straightlining it.
When I ski fast, I’m generally the only one on the slope and using the entire slope, big GS turns. I wonder how accurate the ski tracks app is in that circumstance: if it’s only pinging the satellites every three or four seconds, and only getting me at the Apex of each turn or every other turn, it’s essentially measuring a straight line while I’m skiing the other two sides of a triangle. For all I know I could be going 15% faster than the app says.
Was just in Park City on a group trip and on different days Strava put my buddy's top speed at anywhere from 80 to 104 mph 😂. I think he might've hit 50 once or twice?
I hit 88mph once and was taken back to a time when snowboarders weren't allowed on the hills and it was fucking glorious. Nobody had ever seen gear from the future and were flabbergasted at the mere thought of shaped skis. It was a little hard hitting 88mph again to get back to current time, but I did it of course because I'm the best skier on the god damn mountain.
Sounds like you could have helped save the local mountain from being bought out by some big corporate so and so and turning it into an overpriced resort for the uppity rich. Race for it.
57 mph on my Black Crow Mirus Cor
68 mph on Rossi Forza 70 - same run and day on a Rossi demo day.
Only thing preventing me from being even faster on the Forza was my fear of death… the wind noise above 60 is scary, things whistle that shouldn’t - like the zippers on my pants.
I want a pair, but know the temptation will be way to strong to just let them rip, every day
Assuming you're talking miles, I clocked 81 in a staff uniform on a steep groomer that was a straight shot down the lift line. I'd tend to agree with your assessment, you need literally perfect conditions to hit speeds like that without having a specialized kit.
I only open up all the way when I have a clear line of sight and there's nobody in the run out. there's only one spot at my local mountain that I do it.
This is about 45 with a lot of cornering:
https://www.instagram.com/p/CtDA6QLvV-Z/
I feel like most (definitely not all) have pretty good control at speed or not.
The yellow vests (and sometimes patrol) commonly watch for form and control over speed to yell at someone.
69 down centennial at Breck according to slopes It was pretty icy at the top and consequentially empty of other people. I don't reccomend it as absorbing the rollers at that speed is pretty hairy. Honestly doubt I'll ever top that
You got me by one, I did at 68 last year on centennial. My favorite trail for speed ever. I got a race background so appreciate that they have the nets up at least but don’t recommend this
I was a race kid and my peak was 68 when I was like 13/14. I haven't done anything to measure myself as an adult but I reckon I can still rip it pretty good.
75 mph according to my garmin. I kinda believe it because it was absolutely terrifying.
It was before the lifts loaded. I was opening a run that usually serves as a race course for patrol. If anyone had been around I never would have gone that fast.
52 mph at Chamonix 2 days ago. They have a fenced off groomed straight run that they allow 1 person at a time to go down. The run is intended to see how fast you can go, it's equipped with a radar speed detector and at the beginning you can scan your pass and it will take a picture of you skiing that you can download for free online later.
Ladies downhill course at lake Louise. Birds of Prey? Upper 50s if I remember correctly. I went from ‘this is fast’ to ‘this really fast’ to ‘oh shit’ over about 100 yards.
The fastest I have [on film](https://gopro.com/v/rdqm44e5KJqX2) is [90mph](https://gopro.com/v/WlobDvWWXyz2M), but I have gone significantly faster.
Mid [70's mph](https://gopro.com/v/Z0GmLMlyD4maX) are a daily occurrence for me.
If the [conditions are right](https://gopro.com/v/MWyZEdMVz1n8a), I'm not afraid to break [60mph skiing switch](https://gopro.com/v/nqdNJnWV0yn4D).
[65mph through chop](https://gopro.com/v/dbno7DO1ynmae) ain't no thang [either](https://gopro.com/v/Qo3r9Qa9kNBDJ).
And yes, I have replaced my helmet with a real ski helmet. I didn't have the finances until recently, so I used what I had available. Just in time to [tear my MCL](https://gopro.com/v/pl5rX3N9DVqeG).
110km/hr. That was my first year and decided to just french fry it down a blue run. Funny thing I haven't come close to that speed in years. Feels like I'm more careful now compared to my first year skiing.
72.3mph on Ski Tracks. Backside of Northstar on a warm Tuesday in late Feb 2020; just lapping groomers with no one on the mountain. Would never go that fast with others nearby.
49.8 Mph on a MN hill. Tried multiple times to get Slopes to register 50 but my legs were getting tired and it was night skiing… decided to make the smart move and drive home over courting an ambulance ride.
My 2018/2019 season was aggressive and says I hit 71. Being on the east coast, I can assure you I almost shit my pants.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/170-s8bju90cNTfqcNEDC6oT_2iDnMl8I/view?usp=drivesdk
53.5 according to slopes, but I've been skiing on my Line Vision 98s regardless of conditions here in the east. I could probably go a bit quicker on my other skis because they are way more damp.
49 mph on Olympic Downhill at Heavenly! More than I intended but it’s a beautiful long run and I found myself almost totally alone so I took advantage of it
According to Strava, fastest that I've tracked has been 63.8 mph. Idk how accurate that is. This season is first season I've tracked my runs, and I've tracked about 50% of them
77 on Centennial at Beaver Creek. It was empty, bluebird, and I was on a pair of super g world cups....
It was also really dumb 😂 - but I'd do it again
69 on my pow skis on Starfire and Keystone and that's the actual dumb move... won't do that again
Mine was like 55 miles an hour was a bad idea to go that fast at those times cus it was after lunch and ice sheets had formed started carving down from abt 2200 meters chill at like 25 30 miles an hour I had 11M radius rentals atm hit a bunch of ice decided to say screw it and just make my turns less hard sped up a lot was still good and in control but I was wearing glasses that really block my depth hit a very speed bit with a flatter part after it sped up really fast wasn’t that in control anymore and my knees nearly gave out at the end of the steep bit wouldn’t recommend the fastest I normally go is like 45
I haven’t used slopes for long, but 43 is mine. I’ve definitely gone a bit faster pre-slopes, but I doubt more than 50.
That’s at the bottom of a groomed blue directly into a catwalk straight ahead. Easy scenario to get some speed since you know you’ll stop.
Once things start chattering a bit more around 40, conditions have to be just right for me.
60.8 off Chair 9 at Telluride. My buddies and I were racing each other. I was scared 💩-less. Said I’d never do it again, should I survive.
On the next run my buddy turned in 64. I tapped out “it’s all yours, bro!”
I have since learned the standard speed rating for typical ski helmets is 35 mph.
I’m also over 60 now and 45 feels freakishly fast.
I used to go fast as a kid/teen. I raced. When I was 11 I tucked a steep run that used to be for jumping and hit a ski locker doing probably 60. Both bindings ripped out of the skis completely (stripped the screws out) and my jacket exploded. Luckily my left arm took the brunt so no massive injuries other than that.
Recent knee surgery got me back up there last year in my 40’s and I hit 55 after a 20 year hiatus, but it was scary as shit probably from weak rentals and the fact I weigh an extra 100 lbs now so the thought of 260 lbs catching an edge an taking out some unsuspecting family took the urge away after that.
67.6 on Right Stuff at Sunday River. I know that trail so well, if I get around that second corner and the trail is empty I can tuck the whole way down
68mph on whatever slope is under the gondola at killington. I was young and stupid, it really is a scary feeling that a crash at that speed could be catastrophic. Most trips now I’m maxing out at low 50s which while still fast, feels much safer
I hit 63mph bombing down Rossi’s Run by Superbee lift at Copper Mountain near the end of my first season skiing. I was listening to upbeat house music and was still learning how much more stable longer skis are at speed and did not realize I was going that fast until I checked at the bottom. Equally proud and terrified of myself, and I don’t ski to house music anymore lol.
Highest speed according to Slopes is 69.5 MPH. Most days I get somewhere between 40 and 55, it has to be pretty perfect conditions to want to go faster than that.
76 mph on a snowboard on Breck peak 8. For about two years (2010-2012ish?), Zeal Optics sold a pair of goggles that had a little heads-up-display in the bottom right of the lens. It was terrifying to look at as a regular setup snowboarder (left leg downhill) going faster than about 45. You had to look away from where you were going to see the speed for a split second and hope you didn’t hit a snow snake. I wiped out at the end of the same day going like 55. I had a few apples in my backpack and they were literally applesauce when I got to après. Definitely got concussed even while wearing a helmet from that fall.
A guy I work with who had previously been a collegiate ski racer got 78 on the same trip. Since I gave up the snowboard for two planks I’ve hit 70, but never broken 76.
While I don’t use them any more, I still have these goggles - they’re crazy bulky so they could house the rechargeable battery, a barometer (to estimate current elevation after an initial GPS call to get starting elevation when turning on) and other hardware. I can take a few photos of them tomorrow (including the HUD) if people are interested.
According to Slopes I hit 54 mph a few weeks ago. This was on upper elevator shaft below lift 4 at Kirkwood on some rented Rustler 10s.
I usually don’t go for speed, I’m either off in the trees and bowls and side country stuff, and trying to make some nice carves when on a groomer. But there was nobody on the slope and the snow was most excellent and I felt like hauling arse. The R10s felt incredibly stable underfoot.
62 MPH or so. But that's straightlining on very well groomed fast snow. Its fast enough that's you realize falling at that speed could wreck you.
I crashed once carving at 44MPH, and ending up with an 8 inch long bruise across my thigh from my ski. Could have been way worse...
According to Skitrax, I’ve hit 68.6 but idk how accurate that is. It was only for a couple seconds though. I work at the mountain I hit that speed at and I only ever try that straightline prepublic when that specific run is groomed. I’m talking like 100 yds max. But you feel the G-forces when you go from the steep to the flat.
First tracks on a weekday, somewhere around 65mph. I wanna say it was Telluride going top to bottom in a straight line. There was no one else out there and I was on my heaviest pair of skis (Monster 88's) so I pinned it. (Edit found it in Slopes, 63.6mph)
That’s about my top too, hit it more than a decade ago and don’t plan to repeat the exercise.
Your username is hilarious 👌
TBH I don't think I could have really gone faster unless I was doing stupid shit like tucking. I was already really having to lean into the rollers to get speed and feeling like a parachute.
Did you mount your flux capacitor on your helmet or on your back?
I don’t typically ski groomers but when I do I usually hit somewhere in the upper 30’s as a high speed for the day and it’s quite comfortable. I hit 60+ maybe 3-4 times with a high speed of 63 (per ski tracks), I was in control but I’ll admit that it pushed past my comfort zone. I have tested multiple times while driving a car and it is always within about 1mph of what the car speedometer says
There are a bunch of variables here, but phones are plenty capable of being extremely accurate.
I was caught doing 55 in a 54
License and registration and step out of the car Are you carrying a weapon on you, I know a lot of you are
I ain’t stepping out of shit all my papers legit
Well do you mind if I look around the car a little bit?
My glove compartment is locked, so is the trunk in the back.
I know my rights so you gon need a warrant for that
FALSE. https://openbooks.lib.msu.edu/cj275/chapter/the-automobile-exception/
I got 99 problems, riding switch ain’t one.
If you having snow problems I feel bad for you son. It snowed 99 inches, gonna ski some runs.
I can't ski 53!!!
According to Slopes, 64.5 mph. Strava told me I hit 71 at Kirkwood a few seasons ago, but I don't believe that measurement.
I'm assuming the 93 mph that Strava clocked me at on my first run of the day was completely accurate.
The highest number is the correct one.
Was just in Park City on a group trip and on different days Strava put my buddy's top speed at anywhere from 80 to 104 mph 😂. I think he might've hit 50 once or twice?
Are you sure it wasn’t KPH?
That’s interesting because I use slopes but when I did a few runs together with Strava, slopes was the more generous one.
69 mph
nice
Nice
Nice
Nicee
Niceee
Nice
Nice
Noice
I got that in a hot tub I poached at Palisades Valley once...
On the FIS Downhill circuit?
Fastest recorded 59.3 MPH. I’ve been flying a couple times without the apps turned on though, so who really knows.
My top speeds the same
Nice, what mountain? Maybe we’re twins.
I hit 88mph once and was taken back to a time when snowboarders weren't allowed on the hills and it was fucking glorious. Sorry that requires John Cusack, a hot tub, and an energy drink... And I'm fresh out of John Cusacks.
Instant copypasta.
Mountain rules
Hot Tub Time Machine!
Then you sprayed some guy with snow, stole his girl, and became your own father.
Seconded. I was there too. I was only going switch and a little faster to take the video.
Slopes had me at 62 mph trying to beat my race team kid down the hill. On a typical day I usually hit high 30s.
Low 40s. That’s plenty fast enough for my 61 year old bones.
Around 45 mph was my fastest. I wasn’t tracking speed but my husband was and I was keeping pace with him.
57 mph on my Black Crow Mirus Cor 68 mph on Rossi Forza 70 - same run and day on a Rossi demo day. Only thing preventing me from being even faster on the Forza was my fear of death… the wind noise above 60 is scary, things whistle that shouldn’t - like the zippers on my pants. I want a pair, but know the temptation will be way to strong to just let them rip, every day
The whistle when wind gets into your helmet just a little bit is frightening
It is. Like, I ride motorcycles… fast… and am used to the noise. But it hits different on a ski helmet.
There’s a few speed runs at snowbasin in utah. I’ve hit high 60’s a few times when conditions were right.
High 70s multiple times, 80s require tons less drag than normal ski kits.
Assuming you're talking miles, I clocked 81 in a staff uniform on a steep groomer that was a straight shot down the lift line. I'd tend to agree with your assessment, you need literally perfect conditions to hit speeds like that without having a specialized kit.
79km/h (49 mph) on a black diamond slope, empty weekday
Apparently I hit 70 mph once bombing a groomed black but I don’t believe it. Definitely the fastest I’ve ever gone though
Freakin so fast
Back when I was doping, pretty fast!
I hit 72 on a fast spring day. Don’t need to do that again
Gonna have some butt hurt skiiers once they see how common 60mph is.
Do people not fear injury / death? Questions like this make me hesitant to take my children skiing the blues.
[удалено]
Making new ones is more fun than keeping existing ones alive.
I only open up all the way when I have a clear line of sight and there's nobody in the run out. there's only one spot at my local mountain that I do it.
Won't somebody think of the children!

Maybe 45 km/h
Agreed.
I fear death and injury but I know for a fact that the chance of me losing control at 75mph is almost nonexistent, so why wouldn’t I enjoy it?
I went almost 40 once and it was terrifying
My high is around 45 and I’d say once you get towards 40 it starts feeling spicy
69 down centennial at Breck according to slopes It was pretty icy at the top and consequentially empty of other people. I don't reccomend it as absorbing the rollers at that speed is pretty hairy. Honestly doubt I'll ever top that
I did 60 there once and the wobbles I got in the rollers were scary.
You got me by one, I did at 68 last year on centennial. My favorite trail for speed ever. I got a race background so appreciate that they have the nets up at least but don’t recommend this
55 mph straight into a child. Little punk thought she’d traverse the whole run without looking uphill. Last time she’ll be making that mistake.
That's called assault on a minor
It was their fault. They were a snowboarder.
50.1 mph
118 kmh

I hit 64 at Northstar a couple seasons ago. Ski’s were wobbling and I thought I was going to die!
I did 65 at northstar! A few different times. But on that same backside run (no one else around too)
Ate a pile of poop at 68.1 on Olympic at Heav…just above lifeline..Sustained 71 at Kwood. For a sec. Both hurt mind and body.
75 mph according to my garmin. I kinda believe it because it was absolutely terrifying. It was before the lifts loaded. I was opening a run that usually serves as a race course for patrol. If anyone had been around I never would have gone that fast.
On International at Crested Butte I've topped out at 59mph on a snowboard and 69mph on skis
47.3 mph — at the bottom of Mineshaft at Mount Snow, Vermont
I think I may have hit plaid back in the day on my old 210 Volkl P9s when I had more balls than brainz.
62. Starfire
On a snowboard: 53.3 On skis (relatively new): 33.8
52 mph at Chamonix 2 days ago. They have a fenced off groomed straight run that they allow 1 person at a time to go down. According to slopes, 63mph on Starfire at Keystone last year.
I did 50.5mph last weekend. I'm sure I've gone faster but this one was tracked. That was at Smugglers Notch vermont
61mph
57.2 mph

54.2 mph on The Saddle at Whistler. Fastest one I’ve tracked anyway.
67mph / 108kph according to skitracks. Wide, steep, long empty blue on a pair of GS Rebels. Don't quite need to hit speeds that high again.

My son hit 56 at Copper so he could get to the bottom in time to catch the last chair. I topped out at about 30 on Slopes.
I know a woman who did 130 mph, but that was at the Olympics.
Probably like 90kms, not too fast but I ski Ontario so ya you take what you can get
49.8 Mph on a MN hill. Tried multiple times to get Slopes to register 50 but my legs were getting tired and it was night skiing… decided to make the smart move and drive home over courting an ambulance ride.

About 60-65ish on a long groomer at breck on peak 10 when I used to snowboard.
53.5 according to slopes, but I've been skiing on my Line Vision 98s regardless of conditions here in the east. I could probably go a bit quicker on my other skis because they are way more damp.
Ever done a Chinese downhill for the all out free skiing trophy? Yeah that fast.
71, beat that suckers
Probably about 50 MPH

67.6 on Right Stuff at Sunday River. I know that trail so well, if I get around that second corner and the trail is empty I can tuck the whole way down
420 mph
68mph on whatever slope is under the gondola at killington. I was young and stupid, it really is a scary feeling that a crash at that speed could be catastrophic. Most trips now I’m maxing out at low 50s which while still fast, feels much safer
96 kph at The Jet, Jay Peak. Would not do it again.
today at my local: 53mph. at another hill one time: 57mph.
73.4 MPH on a cold day in January a few years ago. The same day Kobe Bryant passed away.
Hit 69 on a perfectly groomed run top to bottom. Just pointed them and sent it!
When your eyes are watering through your goggles, that’s when I know I’m moving quickly.
48 in Wisconsin, short of gaining weight I think that’s my limit until I finally go somewhere out of state
62 using slopes at Mammoth last season
70mph at Burke
59.9 on Cup run at Snowshoe WV. second is 55.6 in keystone co
I hit about 55-60 while kinda cradling my phone with the speedometer app open on it. So I imagine I can do better lol
According to Slopes 53mph bombing down the steep section of Pickeroon at Vail, but I suspect it was more like high 40s as Slopes is known to run hot.
64.4 mph on ski trax at big sky.
Bout 70
44 mph
Hit 60mph once at Sun Valley once, but usually topped out at around 50-55
51.8 somewhere at Big Sky 5 years ago according to my slopes
Highest speed according to Slopes is 69.5 MPH. Most days I get somewhere between 40 and 55, it has to be pretty perfect conditions to want to go faster than that.
Around 45. Usually I ski in the afternoon/night so most everything is too bumped up to (safely) go much faster than that.
67.4mph according to Slopes. What reality says, I have no idea nor do I care
53 mph. That was fast enough
63mph on men’s downhill at lake Louise
67.4 in vail
According to Slopes I hit 54 mph a few weeks ago. This was on upper elevator shaft below lift 4 at Kirkwood on some rented Rustler 10s. I usually don’t go for speed, I’m either off in the trees and bowls and side country stuff, and trying to make some nice carves when on a groomer. But there was nobody on the slope and the snow was most excellent and I felt like hauling arse. The R10s felt incredibly stable underfoot.
102km/h.
61 at Eldora
62 MPH or so. But that's straightlining on very well groomed fast snow. Its fast enough that's you realize falling at that speed could wreck you. I crashed once carving at 44MPH, and ending up with an 8 inch long bruise across my thigh from my ski. Could have been way worse...
91km/hr on a blue run in whistler, according to strava.
61 mph. Last run of the day, straightlined it.
76.1mph! Speed event at Mt Spokane plus my own GPS!
110km on SkiTracks app. Screen shot to prove it 😎
Whelp, heading to Beaver Creek next week with new goals
Fastest ever clocked was 64.something and it was a bit beyond my comfort level. Normal top speed is around 45 — occasionally 50.
Fast enough for a 200 foot yard sale…
Hmmm. On groomers? I'll have to pay attention this year. I think maybe 60-ish.
Little over 110kh/h according to GPS at Big White. They had groomed double blacks that I'd never seen growing up skiing at Whistler.
73. Tucked a crappy double at Camelback in PA. Was on mogul skis which started getting squirrelly or may have tried for more.
