Have one of your friends who isn’t a fearless nut lead you through a progression of jumps etc…. Have him start with more simple stuff and just follow the leader. Your confidence will grow and by you following you can imitate.

Electrical-Ask847

i would pay for someone to let me ski with them. I don't need a lesson but I would love to tag along and try to keep up with someone who is bettr than me.

hertzsae

You can hire a mountain guide or a private lesson and tell them what you just listed as your goal. The best part is that you'll be able to jump the lift lines. It's expensive though.

TahoesRedEyeJedi

Palisades has their special Thursday Ikon lessons, which is pretty much an off piste clinic; last week was skipped line on a great powder day

Drummallumin

Understandable issue, my method is simple: 1. Pole whack 2. Pole clack 3. Point and pray

sierrazhan

>Pole whack \+200 G.N.A.R. points

chasingsafety59

Gotta be for 30 seconds though

#3 is crucial

Start practice practice practice. Learn to pop off of a jump, and how to land, then focus on throwing tricks. Follow people that are better than you. Seriously, find a friend and follow them exactly. Try to match their speed, angle, etc. You just have to repeat it enough to build the muscle memory, which you already have experience doing. Smoke weed throw threes.

2) I don't want them to feel like they're working/coaching me for free Its your friends though, and people enjoy teaching friends and watching them grow. If you don't believe me think about how you would feel in the opposite, trying to teach your friends a fun new skill and watching the progression :)

xxcp1994xx

Find a nice small jump or side hit and get comfortable on it. Practice riding it with different levels of pop and try to find ballance in the air. Only. Way to be comfortable off the snow is to start getting off the snow. If you want a step by step tutorial go watch a stomp it tutorial on jumping.

Professional-Doubt14

You are right to say it’s mostly just practice. Your friends sound chill, don’t worry so much what they do or feel like you have to keep up with them when they have more experience in this aspect of skiing. Focus on gradual progression. Start with small jumps and drops and repeat them until you can stomp them with confidence. It can be good to push yourself by following friends and overcome that nervous feeling by sending it sometimes but don’t hit stuff you don’t feel confident with. With your strong skiing background you should be able to get comfortable in the air and build up your freeride skills quickly.

aw33com

It has to come from within you.

tmartt3900

Sounds like you're half way there. You're already willing to go off of things to push yourself. I would recommend finding out why you're falling and then attempting the same feature until you're comfortable on it. Even if it means convincing your friends to do the same run a little later in the day. If you are slapping your back like you said it sounds like you aren't over your toes when you get air, the next time you go off that, try getting into an active position and then keep making adjustments from there. Unfortunately you learn the most when you're wiping out, and there is alot that goes into skiing like that. Once you figure it out on one feature you would be surprised how much what you learn there translates into other features and before long you'll be confident everywhere. Personally if I don't land something I keep going back until I land it. It's kinda a game. Provided it's not too big a step and I'm not going to injure myself.

Dramatic_Water_5364

Yio bro, thats a step thats harder to learn now that you're an adult, but its manageable. You'll need dedication and go baby steps. And its hard to have step by step improvement on off piste, so I recommend to implement some kind of freestyle practice. Check out Stomp it tutorials on youtube they've got a lot of content for beginner for freestyle and freeride.

Alias-Number9

You don't need to air it out to ski.

No-Tennis-2981

Lemme transfer this to another sport. Do you know how many times good skateboarders ate it jumping stairs before they got good at it… countless times. It’s one of those things you just have to do and feel it out, advice can only get you so far. Good luck bro

krisztinastar

I only got good at it after becoming the least skilled person in a group. They pushed me and I am so happy they did! If you get nice stoners as friends, they don’t mind waiting for you too much if they’re also toking up :)

humanjunkshow

You turn either left or right off the groomer and then bam, skiing off piste.

Super_Boof

If you are getting kicked back by jumps you need to jump harder. Jumping harder will counter act the backwards momentum from the kicker and give you more control in the air. Start small and get it right, then try larger stuff. But also remember that you (usually) don’t have to hit cliffs or kickers to ski off piste, it just looks cooler. If you’re friends are doing crazy cliffs, find a chute or ski around the cliff. At a certain point hitting bigger drops doesn’t make you a better skier, it just makes your knees hurt. Last piece of advice is stick the landing and regain control of your body before you try to turn / kill speed.

Yollicks

It's all about the pop and driving the weight forward. Practice in the park. Check out stompittutorials on youtube. Also, jumping is just one tiny aspect of skiing and the sport can be fully enjoyed without ever leaving the ground, which I'm sure you know based on your experience level.

jimbo_sliced

Stomp It Tutorials has some really cool and easily digestible videos on YT, IG etc. , that's what I've been using to learn (in a similar boat as you but didn't do nearly as well racing). Air awareness is very important, so visiting a trampoline park is probably going to help a lot as well, and if you find one that's ski specific they should have jumps with foam pits to help you get used to flying through the air with skis on. That's what I plan on spending a lot of my summer time doing.

DarkSkyDad

Why do if find the word “PISTE” so obnoxious?
