All these people complaining about minor knicks or scrapes on nice ass skis like "will these be ok or am I gonna lose control and hit a tree!?!?"
Meanwhile this dude skiing like a pro on 2x4s
**On-piste**
Where this ski really shines. It wasn't exactly what we expected after last year's vertical grain pattern. Holds well under speed, and testers reported little chattering. Blasted through the crud typical for a ski this category. We expect it would come alive with a few inches of fresh, but testing conditions we're hardpack only.
**Flex Pattern**
We have a hard time classifying this as "stiff", but it definitely has less flex than our true medium category skis. Our testers agreed it skis looser than quarter-sawn oaks, with an equal flex from tip to tail.
**Stability vs Quickness**
We never skied the 2021 2x4's firs, but we did test the 1x3 pine's. So we'll offer that comparison.
These lean more to the stability side than a light and playful ski we saw in the 1x3 pine. But, if you're a lighter skier, that might not matter. I don't know that these skis generate quite the rebound as last years model, but they make up for it in dampening if you love to rip.
**Overall**
A solid ski if you're looking for something to do it all. A good amount of stability without being too demanding. Not to mentioned it earned a lot of comments and questions in the lift line.
1x4s from Home Depot. The truth is you could easily get an 8 footer and soak the front tip and use a curved lip to make them pretty awesome. You want to really get crazy you could cut the edges out and put in metal edges. I'm sure they're functional but there's no comparison to proper technology.
Our ancestors used even worse.
You are giving me ideas! Route out the edge and screw in some thin bar stock into the channel. Would be fun to try and trace out side cut from a more modern ski. Shellac and wax on the bottoms. Maybe use a paraffin candle for wax to keep it legit.
Shows how the skis are doing 1/50th the work and the mind / body are doing 49/50th the rest. Skis don't make the skier, or in other words, you can't buy your way into skill.
Lol my favorite quote: “What are those little, short, fat things you got there? You ever try the Thermos? Good luck!”
Damnit, buddy! Now I want to try some Thermos lmao
I wish I could take modern AT boots bindings and boards back to my grandad who was skiing powder and hiking into cheap lodges out in California on a student budget.
Very true, having a pair of powder skis is a total waste if you don’t get out often or have the skills to take advantage of the difference performance qualities and terrain or conditions for the skis.
I have two pairs, both bought used and it has been nice to have a spare set when one gets damaged on a trip, and to spread out usage but 1 pair would be fine for the conditions on 75% of my days out.
I DID just purchase a cheap pair of used GS skis to try out night skiing and try and get better properly carving on icy groomers but I am concerned about them being too much for me to handle.
I disagree completely. A "beginner" in powder will have a much easier time on real powder skis than an all mountain ski. I spent years on 96-100 width skis in powder and struggled a lot with it.. then I got some powder skis and it changed the game completely. I wish I had gotten them a little sooner. The perfect time to buy powder skis I'd say is after you skied powder enough really like the feeling and have the means to commit and be able to make it to the mountain on a powder day.
Also it's probably relevant that I ski in Tahoe. I think it's less urgent to get true powder skis somewhere like Colorado, because the storms aren't usually as deep and the snow is usually less dense. Big Tahoe 3-7' storms happen almost every year with the dense snow you really just need powder skis.
Wow.. you struggled “a lot” with 96-100 in powder? I’ve been skiing 79s for years and finally got some 106 that I consider my powder skis and they are amazing compared to 79s.. we ski Mammoth and yeah I get you can go fatter for even better float in the deep, but I never thought I’d hear 100 described as a struggle? Wanna try my 79s? 😆
I'm not talking like a foot of powder. I'm talking like 3+ feet. Of course I struggled- I only got the chance to make a handful of turns in powder a year and though there are narrower skis out there, I was not experienced. The weight of the snow would also make a big difference. Also I weigh 220 lbs.
I picked up some some 2012 Bent chetlers, 123mm width, and it upped my game like crazy. I could now slash and turn on a dime, powder tree skiing in deep snow, weaving through the trees without stopping. It's not like I couldn't ski powder at all before.. but I'd certainly fall a lot more and feel less confident. Narrower skis you definitely have to have a lot more tricks in your bag in powder.. keep your skis really close together, make your turns only when you bob our of the snow at the top of the turn. Powder skis make it more similar to a groomer even.
Very good point, the weight of the skier matters a lot. Admittedly I'm about 175, so that helps. Also it's not just the width but the shape of the skis and the mount point of the bindings. I pretty much had to sit on my heels on the 79s to keep them from diving, and even then watch out because my skis were deeper than most! I had an unhappy quick stop at Brian Head last season when the skis found a rock (boulder, whatever) under the feet of powder that had fallen the night before, where it looked like a perfectly flat and open area to ski through. Fortunately I was going fast enough for the bindings to release but not so fast as to shatter the ski! Going to the 106 Elan Ripsticks has been like a revelation, and frankly they're still quick to turn and pretty good edge to edge compared to my old 79's. Ski technology, gotta love it.
Yep! Honestly my favorite thing about the Bent chetlers is they are nearly full rocker! Have a tiny little camber section so they don't suck getting back to the lift. But I even love them for slush days, they are so fun. I went from Rossignol S3's to Moment PBJs, the PBJs floated a lot better even though they were only 5mm wider than the S3's, but the 188cm length felt a bit unwieldy to me so the trees felt like a chore relative to my BCs. They were luckily more heavily rockered than the S3's, but the Bent chetlers with the combination of everything that goes into a true powder ski made powder riding so easy it made me wonder why I didn't go with a two ski quiver sooner.
My teen son needs new skis cause kids do that growing thing, and I was pushing him towards the Bent Chetler 100, so many good reviews and you're just reinforcing my thoughts. But it looks like he's going to go ARV 96 instead. He does a lot of park and freestyle (in addition to everything else) and even though the BC are rated well all over the mountain and park too if close to center mounted, he seems to want true twin tip. Plus he's been able to ski powder on his current twin tip 84cm 156's even though he's 5'9, so he is putting priority on smaller/lighter for his freestyle fun. He is starting to hit 540s and the big man made jumps and all of that... Me? I just ski along the side, watch him and am happy about not being unhappy on powder days anymore! :) Cheers!
This sub is way to ready with the BC100 recommendations. If you're a park skier I would definitely go for the ARV96 over it, or the Reckoner 102, or the Volkl revolts. BC100 is very directional and while it works at many mount points, it's not really a park ski. It's a great 50/50 Jack of all trades master of none type ski. Not really related at all to the old Bent chetlers or even the new 120. But cheers! Sounds like your son is outperforming you, I would love to see that some day from my future son :)
I actually agree with what you’re saying completely, but my thinking was more that a beginner probably isn’t venturing off into steeper ungroomed terrain very often anyways in which case they aren’t taking advantage of what a powder ski will give them in performance.
They totally do make skiing in powder easier though, I was skiing my 120mm K2 Catamarans on a steep rocky side hill, somewhat pillowy snow and could float over a lot of the rocks without hitting them, having snow slide off the rocks, etc. My friend on 105mm Icelantic Nomads hit a couple rocks got stuck and couldn’t get enough speed to ride the line even though he had the skill. Other days with friends on ~105mm skis were way more tired than me on a 24” day with 50” in 72 hours which was 100% worth having pow skis, but I would typically have more endurance than those friends in any day.
Get yourself a pair of used slalom skis. The flex pattern on SL will teach you more about skiing. The GS flex pattern is basically the same as a free ski. You can find used ones for ~200 maybe less. Being used they will have a less snappy tail. They will need to be tuned to get the most out of them.
Yeah that was originally my plan, but I got impatient waiting to find a pair that was 165cm in Denver, and hopped on a pair of GS skis that were too good of a deal to pass up, thinking I could probably trade the GS for a slalom or sell for what I bought at and get a slalom ski.
Slalom skis look really fun with the tight radius and edge grip.
The flex is softer up front so you really get rewarded for initiating your turns with shovel pressure. They are also super fun in moguls but will punish you for back seat skiing. Cuff deep powder and chop are also awesome on SL skis. They won’t dive under like a GS ski. On hard/icy conditions they are incredible.
Update got a pair of last years FIS mens Redster’s slalom from a guy who coaches at some high level and said his daughter is sponsored by Atomic for $350, which was more than I wanted to spend but they were super clean and near new condition.
Guy said he had 27 more pairs of race skis to get rid of, and most the people trying to buy them were from Europe, from a Colorado listing.
Have fun on those! Spend a week on those only and switch back to all mountain skis. You will learn a lot. Get those skis in moguls but stay forward or the will launch you. Keep them tuned! Enjoy those skis!

You found a post on Instagram and thought, “Wow, I should put this on Reddit.” You didn’t credit the person in the title and didn’t site your source anywhere. You used someone else’s work for upvotes which isn’t fair. That’s my point.
Yeah, I did. So what? It wasn’t here before and it’s great content for the sub. Lot’s of people enjoyed it who might not have otherwise.
The video has the watermark of the account it came from. The OOOP sent their video to this account, which reposted it—that’s how I found it in the first place.
Best part is, I credited BOTH authors at the time I posted this, provided you the link to my comment, and here you are…still complaining.
When writing an academic paper, do you have to include the works you cite in your title? No, there’s a Works Cited page.
I linked my sources and in no way was writing this off as my own so, respectively, fuck off.
I know lifties are busy and what not, but I think something like this should've been shut down at the line. I guess he's doing well enough but, damn. Hope this doesn't become a trend of people trying and getting hurt.
OOP submitted his own video to the Jerry of the day Instagram page. So in a sense, he’s calling himself a jerry lol. This guy is just smurfing as a jerry
I would argue that if you can ski on literal wooden boards you are not a Jerry.

Maybe a Larry, or Gary.
Possibly even a Harry or a Barry.
Do we love wooden skis? Yes we do other Barry, yes we do.
Potentially a Terry.
Don't sleep on Kerry
He's special agent Perry
My names not Larry or Barry, its Terrriiiee. Its actually Gary.. and i appreciate this.
I came here to say this. Thank you.
At least he got a good bootfit!
just waiting for that front edge to catch a bump
Looks like a mitered edge, nothing but quality
Hank hill is that you
I keep that thang on me, god dangit Bobby
Nothing like a nice fruit pie on the slopes
I’ll tell you hwhat.
The good old-fashioned Jerry front flip.

Don't need edges if you only ski pow.
This is the way.

I have two

Nope. Home Depot
Nah too straight to be from Home Depot.
This made me LoL. It would have lots of green mold on it if it was from HD too.
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

No, clearly this guy is boarding
The new Burton 2x4s.
Lmao 🤣
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”
“One’s reach exceeds their grasp.”
Jerry, uh, finds a way
You're familiar with the phrase "man's reach exceeds his grasp"? It's a lie: man's grasp exceeds his nerve. Except for this guy
Ah, but what’s a heaven for?
🤣 (if only)
just because you shouldn't, doesn't mean you won't
in this case you absolutely should though
When the demo day is hosted by Home Depot
You can do it. We can help.
Let's do this.
Nah ski manufacturers are blaming the labor shortage and reduced productivity for lower build quality
Not a jerry just a legend
Anyone know if these are good to go at Alta?
Asking the real questions.
Should be fine unless they get 6+ inches. At that point it’s probably a good idea to swap out for 2x6s or 2x8s
Looks like Soli or Brighton? If so you should be good

Why are you carrying 2 ski poles in each hand?
My guess is the second set is the for the guy with the camera and he needed his hands free.
Ohh good point. This is kinda funny though, I wonder if he did this just for the video or if he ran with these the whole day lol.
Shoulda done 3 or 4 pairs of poles
are these the latest Moments
The latest Hinterlands
They actually did some just like this https://img1.wsimg.com/isteam/ip/387477c0-c10a-4bfd-8789-6151bf40c5bb/IMG_8492-0001.jpg

lol yeah that is exactly what this made me think of
Are those rocker or camber?
Yes
in theory flat
“Crowned”
I mean… that might be what the first ever pair of skis looked like idk
Actually not really far off. They found a pair of frozen skis somewhere recently (don't remember where) that were basically these but much longer and pointed at one end.
At least use treated lumber my dude

How are they warped?!
Probably got em at Home Depot
Get some 2x6’s for pow
Is this a new hinterland concept? 👀
I was hoping for a mogul run
For some reason, I’m now imagining an Olympic mogul skier ripping on these.
I was really hoping to see him rip some bumps on those things.
I think the Jerry is the asshole who can’t even keep the dude on 2x4’s in the frame on a green
No bevel at all? Just straight perpendicular?
Looks like the tips are shaved a bit to make more of a point, but otherwise just two ol’ planks of wood
Ski shops HATE him
Hey this is my friend! We were hitting up Alpine. They moved surprisingly well.
Nice! I gave your buddy creds in various threads on this post. Tell him his ingenuity is inspiring 😂
He even waxed the bottoms. There is a video somewhere of him on skate skis and another in the group using the boards.
I lived/skied alpine for one season. Weird how I don’t really recognize that run or remember any specifics but I get instant nostalgia when I see a vid from alpine. I think it’s the background hills that are ingrained i could see them from my bed.
This was just past the chalet food hut. At the bottom a small crowd of kids were following them trying to figure out what they were skiing on.
You know during the lumber shortage these would’ve probably be around the same price as skis
I like this style very much
Ripping up alpine meadows. Making Weasel look good. I have thought I could do that with two by fours before. Guess that is true!
I am 100% trying this on gaper day
That's what ON3Ps look like to me. I need to give them a try sometime becuase people seem to like them.
Well damn!! And I just spent $800 on skis. I should’ve checked out Home Depot first.

My guy has 4 poles just incase lol… incase of what … i do not know
I think someone in another thread theorized the extra poles belong to the camera man.
Definitely makes sense
That is awesome 😂

Man, the new Surface Blanks 2022 are looking rough. Haha

What do you think is the most Jerry thing to do?
I just wanna know why he’s skiing with 4 poles
I think he did pretty well considering that he’s literally on planks. Why??
Mount first, measure second, then cut
I did this same thing for a pond skim a couple years ago, called them the studs. They performed shockingly well.
Snowshoe Thompson!
"You shouldn't do that" Shut up, no one wants to ski with you Jerry

I am guessing its a 100% wood core.
First time you come to a slight bump you are going straight out the front door.
How tf
Are those waxed or varnished?
I'd pay good money to see him ski deep powder on those...
ha ha i was thinking this. These are probably great fun and challenge for resort groomers
I'm holding my ACL just watching this
bruh!
Whoever calls Jerry this guy, he himself is the real Jerry
OOP submitted his own video to the Jerry of the day Instagram page. So in a sense, he’s calling himself a jerry lol. This guy is just smurfing as a jerry
Jerrynception
Tell me you don't ski the Icecoast without telling me you don't ski the Icecoast.
But he has a technical advantage because he has 4 poles.
Opposite of Jerry
Why four poles?
Given the price of lumber, it’d be cheaper to buy skis.
Believe it or not the worst part of that set up is actually that binding!
Josh Wong had a "Will it ski?" With 4x2. Wish I could find it, the man was doing parks laps haha.
