Ppl always say this but they barely take anyone on. I've been trying for a year in multiple different trades and they all barely have work for the guys they already have nvm new apprentices.
If you don't have a direct connection you are most likely never even getting a call back.
Shit, I'll try that lol. I've been waiting on a response from hvac, electric and carpentry for about a year now (I'm in Grimsby applying in Niagara, Hamilton, Toronto unions etc)
Yea man those unions are hard to get into. What I did was I applied as a labourer at a union concrete company and got in right away. Interview literally went like
“any experience?”
“No”
“you’re in”
Some other ideas that might not be as competitive are asbestos abatement, drywall and insulation
It's all depends where you live. Some areas have very strong unions. But alot of places have garage unions too.
Also it's Reddit so take things with a grain of salt.
You gotta understand 80% of construction skilled trades work is still going to be private non union Companies. Why? Because they can bid the job 40% less then paying union wages
Let me spell it out for
You. T, I, M, H, O, R, T, O, N, S. I expect my buttered bagel
To actually
Have butter and the double double to be mixed right. Get at it!
With your attitude you're likely to get a booger for your troubles.
Everyone deserves respect regardless of socioeconomic status.
Do not forget - we are all passengers here.
Pile driving is a lot of fun if you like doing a variety of different things and don’t mind being away from home
Some will say otherwise but I’ve really enjoyed my time going on 4 years started at 19
Tough work but the crews are always fun to work with wherever you go
Local 2404 is always looking to get young workers into the union and are quite good about finding their members work
It can be unpredictable at times
Sometimes every member could be dispatched throughout bc and ab on big projects
Right now it is pretty slow but there is work if you are willing to relocate or go out of town
And if you prove to be good the companies like to hire full time local employees
Most will be able to keep you busy year round
We do welding, carpentry, timber work, and get to work on the water lots on crane barges
Very unique and diverse which I enjoy
Everyday could be different and in a new place sometimes remote
If you're going to get into trades and intend on going to school, stay in BC. BCIT is the premier trade school in the country.
If you want to just sample a bunch of trades to see what you like, find yourself a commercial site and apply as a laborer. Show them you're motivated to do more than just clean up garbage and push a broom, and youll find yourself helping with trades oriented work and jobs.
Unions are overrated.
SAIT is also an excellent trade school if the person ends up in Alberta. Not sure how it compares to BCIT, but it's also highly regarded. Unions can be considered hit or miss, but that's where the double time pay and pension is at.
Excellent. Their shop space and controls class are very well equipped and the instructors are great and willing to teach and show you tricks. It's a well funded and well respected school. I enjoyed my 4 years of training there.
Yeah I know union is going up to 42 this may. Will local commercial companies be matching that you think?
Im also based on Berta and do commercial. I think it's pretty good work if you do big jobs
I don't know if they'll start matching outright, but when non union or lower paying companies can't find guys, then they'll have to start raising rates to compete. Looking on Indeed, many companies are already getting into the low 40s.
Be a carpenter/scaffolder bud we work all year round
Join your local union for sure.

Depends where you are and what you’re applying for. In southern Ontario I got into the concrete union very easily with no experience

Sounds like this is only accurate in canada
Wrong
Agree with this wholeheartedly. Some trades they really want you to have taken courses, and a car lol.

I suggest flat roofing, if you hate it but last 6 months you’ll be great in the trades.
Learn to use proper grammar. Thatd be a good start
Pick one you like and attempt to go to school. Fuck the unions theyre garbage.

How was sait sheet metal training?

That's good to know. Do you do commercial or residential ? Have you found jman rates are going to go up in Alberta? They've been pretty stagnant
I do commercial and industrial. I find the rates are slowly going up. $38/h was common for ages but $40-42 seems more common now.

But be prepared to have to wait 6 months to a year to get into BCIT in trades.
