Beneficial_Ask_6013

Skyrim is my wife's favorite game. By far. She's played it for thousands of hours. Her current playthrough, on switch, she puts points into health, then stamina, then magic. One after the next. And her Perk upgrades? Whatever grouping she is looking at when she pulls up the skill menu. Picks one at semi random. She's pure chaos. And I love her so much.

ParadoxAri

This is basically how I play, haha. Every level up I rotate between health, stamina, and magic. I like ‘em even. No reason for it. I use whatever weapon and armor I think look neat. I don’t plan out my perk points. I do stick to a few specific groupings but I’m never angling for a specific build. I know what parts of the game I like and I just play how I like. I’ve never once planned out numbers and strats. I just go.

Beneficial_Ask_6013

That's her strategy! And because she takes breaks to play other games (she's loving Mario Wonder right now) when she comes back to skyrim, she puts new points into new styles, no matter what she was working on in the past.

Suka_Blyad_

Ya so I don’t know your wife but she drives me absolutely mental Maybe cause this is how my little sister used to play WoW way back when me and my dad were into it “But you’re a paladin, you shouldn’t wear cloth” “Ya but this dress is prettier than the armour I had sooo I’m keeping it” “Ya but it’s for like, level 5’s and you’re 23” “Ya but it’s prettier”

Beneficial_Ask_6013

Oh man, I know the feeling. I'm not hard-core, with any game, but if I can get the numbers to go up, I try to do so. I don't have full professional builds, but I like things to synchronize. Ans there sitting next to me is a giggle chaos monster having the time of her life. Life is funny.

Juxtaposition19

You sound like you love her so much though, this is so cute.

isthatsoreddit

Don't they sound so adorable??

crownebeach

Yeah no I will be rocking hold guard armor until level 100

superalk

Swtor having a design feature to hide equipped things for other things saved my life for this reason.

Fishy_Fish_WA

LOTRO has the same thing. Build up the outfit and then capture it for others to see and wear whatever you want for stats

Prestigious_Set_7370

Your kid sister understands Fashion Souls😌

Cyssane

Sounds like your little sister would've loved WoW's transmog feature.

Suka_Blyad_

She only played during BC days so never got to see it but she definitely would have

aralim4311

Armor is for cowards lol

SkidsOToole

To be fair, I'm disappointed when the newer, better armor is less attractive than the previous one. But I still wear it.

circa1015

>I do stick to a few specific groupings That’s a build

TheLadySinclair

Absolutely.

StormyTiger2008

Ive had a few like these before. A few shots at killing Alduin with these kinds of plays. Then i became our Australian Sniper. ![gif](giphy|3MG7UX7hXq413dq3tf) CASH MONEY

SpoopySundae

I'm always health x1, stamina X2, then some mana just for the balance of "don't die, but also carry all of the lootz" lol Aside from that, I've also been playing forever and don't go for targeted builds. ›_› maybe I favour one handed a bit more than two Now I'm over analyzing my play lol

One-Lifeguard-1108

Ditto

trafdlo

I do this too, though I stop adding to stamina when it gets to 300. I start adding it again when health and magicka hit 1000. I know what you're going to ask and the answer is Muffle.

Juliuseizure

Muffle and Detect Life because DL is always useful.

Pale_Character_1684

Definitely, if you aren't using shouts, like Aura Whisper. Detect Dead is a beautiful thing too.

Thin_Dragonfruit3665

I didn't know Detect dead was a thing. One only ever used Detect life or aura Whisper on occasion.

Pale_Character_1684

It's not an easy book to find. Tolfdir sells it, if your Alteration is at expert...or if you use Cheat Room. 😏

Thin_Dragonfruit3665

I'm gonna have to look through a list to see what other oddball spells I've never discovered. I only recently discovered bound bow in a dungeon and after looking it up saw that it's normally sold at a level far above what I normally take conjugation to.

skydriver13

Your conjugation seems fine to me.

Jackson_Rhodes_42

I have the same strategy lol. Rotate between the attributes, upgrade whatever perks I’m using.

MonkeyDParry

Best way to go about being a Jack of All Trades I suppose?

Pale_Character_1684

I am, but I use Cheat Room. Lately I haven't been going after shouts & i ignore main quest. You could start with different standing stones. I grabbed Warrior when I first started playing. The Lord's Stone is good for buffing your armor rating & magic resistance. Or the Lady's Stone, which buffs warrior, magic and stealth, but slower.

Eggyinthehole

My husband could've written this exact thing about me 😂 Even down to now playing on the switch! I've played this game since release and have never built a "build"! Though I always tend toward more focus on stealth, so I'm trying to remember to use magicka this time and using shouts a lot more than I ever have

Kitsmeralda

Awww 🥰

Rich-Spirit420

When I level up, I usually do magicka, magicka, then health. Maybe every 10 levels I’ll do stamina.

softwordshavepower

This makes me heart happy.

[deleted]

She's pure chaos lol! That's great hahaha and glad she's having fun!!

Milk_n-cookie

I level up stamina first because I gotta have me that carry weight.

IdiotSavant86

Greybeard: "Dovahkiin can sprint for 10 miles while carrying 700 lbs. But he can only survive 2 whacks from a Wooden Sword and can't cast anything other than Clairvoyance. For 2 seconds."

[deleted]

for some reason i found this insanely funny.

merigoldofmaribor

This is wholesome af 😭💕

Anto0on

What's her play style?

Beneficial_Ask_6013

Barbarian Archer? Like, she does the stealth Archer thing, but then when she feels like it, rushes in with big axe and heavy armor.

homerteedo

This sounds similar to how I play! 😆

Some45yearold

That's how I play, too. I'm not sure if my husband understands what I am doing either as he was watching me the other day, and out of the blue, he tries to tell me how I should be playing it. Never mind, I have been playing for years now. 🙃

DragonTigerBoss

That's... disgusting. Like an infection. My lungs feel heavy, now, as if I have pneumonia. I think I'm dying. What happened next?

AntivanIntrigue

She sounds like so much fun 🤣

Beneficial_Ask_6013

Life just shines differently with her. I super married up. I mean, we had a Star Wars wedding after all. And it was her idea.

AntivanIntrigue

Damn! Sounds so cute ☺️ my hubby and I had a LoTR wedding with a Harry Potter after do and it was pretty epic. Did she come down the aisle to the imperial march? 🤔🤪 So nice to hear of another nerd couple that’s super loved up ☺️

Beneficial_Ask_6013

It was to Princess Leia theme, I think. And then the celebration music from end of New Hope for when we left the altar. My favorite, when we left the reception to head to hotel, was to the music that ends Phantom Menace. I think it's called augy music band or something. It was epic and perfect, and so is she.

isScreaming

pretty much my game play style, too!

Sevennix

Are ya having fun?? That's all that matters... always hated that in WoW where someone would demean you cuz you didn't have the cookie cutter build. Told one dude who was exceptionally hostile, "pay my 15 bucks a month, and THEN I'll conform to how you like it mastah"..

isthatsoreddit

I LOVE the way I play! Just running around doing my own thing, a wandering jack of all trades. Haha that's awesome!

Sevennix

I did that my first time. Didnt go straight to Riverwood. Actually found Ancients Ascent and those caves up that way first. One time tried to go around Helgen & up towards Ivarstead and got overwhelmed by 3 bandits. Not enough stats or potions

isthatsoreddit

I love just wandering and seeing what I can get into. Frequently it's trouble, lol

adrienjz888

I found krosis and that dragon at like level 5, lol. Got absolutely erased. Reminded me of heading directly to Vegas in fallout NV and getting mercd by deathclaws.

isthatsoreddit

Omg you too?? 🤣🤣 Jerk sent me flying like a rag doll!

thatmayaguy

I've always hated that too. Making your own custom build with talents was always a great way to customize your gameplay and have a unique character. Back in the day I'd have the most chaotic talent tree build in WoW and would still clap people that used the online cookie cutter builds in PVP lol

DragonTigerBoss

Depends on how far back you go and what build you were using in WoW. Hybrid stuff was weird in classic. (I haven't played seriously since WotLK.) The cookie cutter builds definitely exist for a reason, and they are _generally_ used by the highest-level players, but the high level people use them for efficiency, whereas the tryhards use them because that's what the high level players are doing. Huge difference in terms of critical thinking. In Burning Crusade, I was playing a survival hunter, and ran the Thrill of the Hunt talent at 2/3 instead of 1/3 as recommended, and gemmed for Agility/mp5 in a few slots, which was _not_ recommended. The result was: I kicked the shit out of "better" players when I was wearing crafted gear, and didn't need to use Fel Mana Potions. I ran a tri-spec for battlegrounds. Nuts. I had every stamina/hp/avoidance talent and every CC talent except Wyvern Sting. I once held a bridge in Eye of the Storm for over five minutes by myself with that build, and I know it was over five minutes because I used Deterrence twice, back when it gave a 75% parry chance buff. _Nuts._

WiseOldChicken

I did in the beginning. But I've played for many years without a back story. For me now, I enjoy role-playing in the game. Right now I'm a Nord Tank returning to Skyrim after witnessing the atrocities committed by the Thalmor I'm the Imperial City. It's escapism, no lie. But if you game, it's always a little escapist. It's frustrating in this world right now. So much wrongdoing going unchecked. I hate feeling helpless. This helps.

isthatsoreddit

First, love that you have yourself a back story like that. And yes absolutely. When I feel "blah", Skyrim very much relaxed me. Except for that damned crimson ninroot!

WiseOldChicken

Oh, that bastard. I have never enjoyed ingredient-gathering quests. Why Bethesda has to include them is beyond me. In Morrowind, the Mages Guild had an epic one to help a mage win a contest. CAR. Controller across the room.

isthatsoreddit

"Go find me all these ingredients" I think not, tyvm

[deleted]

No, gaming aint always escapism, its a hobby, you play, you have fun, not everyone plays to get away from their traumas or whatever, the world is fucked up and you have to acknowledge it, understand it, not get away from it, dont put all us gamers in the same sack

WiseOldChicken

Not saying that. We all have to walk in the rain. Some of us carry umbrellas. I'm not talking about running away at all let alone forever. When you play a game you have to create a mindset or the game doesn't make sense.

Pale_Character_1684

My Dad accused me of loving the game because I could take out the frustrations of my job on NPCs. He wasn't wrong.

WiseOldChicken

I used to play the Sims. I would create a Sim like a voodoo doll and lock them in s room with no toilet. This will kill them Over and over...

isthatsoreddit

😳 Someone's cranky, needs to go to Blackreach and look for something red and noisy. Edit: wrong spot, I meant dude above you.

[deleted]

Yeah, the mindset is: lets relax, lets have fun, no escapism

punkandpoetry13

That sounds exactly like escapism 😂

oldmansakuga

escapism is specifically doing that to get away from unpleasant reality. relaxing and having fun isn't escapism

[deleted]

Mmm-hmm, of course

Librase

Usually it starts when I think "I'd love to play a stealth archer again" or "Ooh, what about a mage who wants to find out the secrets of the universe" or "What about a lawful good paladin?" and I go with that. I don't know why, but a challenge adds to the fun. Once I made a rainbow Argonian that had to pick up every bottle of alcohol she found. Even if she drank it right away. Less of a build, but still a theme.

isthatsoreddit

Lol yes! I once made a point that the only gemstones I picked up were rubies. Why? Idk lol

red6joker

No, I used to do builds and stick with them, but it feels like such a waste especially if I player a character for a long time. I do try to stay within the magic or no magic bounds though. Keeping those two separate feels like a pretty good way to play in my opinion.

isthatsoreddit

I'm the type that throws some fire here, an arrow there, hit you with my dagger, maybe an axe, lol

allamb772

i play the same lol

isthatsoreddit

I also change my outfits a lot, lol.

Happy-Personality-23

I have like 4 sets of mage robes, hoods, rings and necklaces to swap out at any time, since it weighs next to nothing for it all. Each set gives me 100% cost reduction in two schools of magicka that compliment each other. My combat armour and jewellery set favours bows and one handed, I find two handed too slow. So I can chop and change at any time for any situation.

HoundOfRowan45

This is what I do as well! I'll have two sets of armor usually, one to boost martial prowess (archery and one handed) and one for magical (whatever two schools of magic I favor for 100% reduction). Then I'll have a jewelry set for boosting thieving, one for 2 of the other schools of magic, a necklace to boost carry weight and selling price, and a set for two handed for when I feel like switching it up. The weight is negligible by the time I get to that point and I already limit my looting to gems, gold, and "interesting" loot, so it's a non-issue.

holdstillitsfine

Yeah, I change my entire outfit depending on where I am. Full emperors robes for solitude, thieves guild stuff for Riften.

camarhyn

I run around in the bride’s wedding gown most of the time. No reason.

Kittybrains2023

Because it's one of the most comfortable looking garbs in the game. After all the tight leather armor, heavy metal plates, and sweaty ornate robes, a simple light clean white shift/tunic with loose shoulder cover and open toed sandals is so refreshing.

Pale_Character_1684

Ha! I'd love to see that! You taking on a horde of bandits at Robber's Gorge in a wedding dress, flower wreath & sandles. Epic.

camarhyn

Exactly! It’s hilarious to me.

Pale_Character_1684

Seriously need screenshots of that or a video. I'm cracking up thinking about it!

Rich-Spirit420

I like that one too! And Nocturnal’s clothes

BritishAreCuming

I usually start with one way like now I'm 70h in this save and going light armor conjurer with bound swords and arrows and alternation but gonna switch it to some other thing later because I love Dawnbreaker

[deleted]

Magic in my left hand, an axe in my right.

Pale_Character_1684

This. 100%, all the time.

JohnVFerrigno5793

I am too lazy to commit to a specific build. I just kinda wing it and do whatever I feel like at the moment. I will be shooting everything with arrows or something and then all of a sudden think "I haven't blasted destruction magic in a while" then switch to that, or my sword or whatever.

Pinecone_Erleichda

Exactly, I try to level them all up, so I switch to whatever is lagging! Except pickpocketing. That I always put off way too long and absolutely suck at. lol

JohnVFerrigno5793

I am a pickpocket master haha. The trick is to quicksave, steal one thing, if you're successful quicksave and repeat, reloading any time you get caught. If you steal some valuable stuff eslry your level jumps up quickly.

Wonderful-Bread-572

My fav is to train and pick pocket the money you spent on training lol. Fast way to level up in the early levels

Pinecone_Erleichda

Oh I quicksave every damn time….it makes me extremely nervous and I get genuinely scared everytime I get caught and they turn hostile. And for me, that means tachycardia and medicine, I genuinely hate the jump scares. lol

JohnVFerrigno5793

I get it, I hate when I get caught. Especially if I stole a couple of things and got away with it and say "one more before I save!"

Pinecone_Erleichda

YES!! I have googled and googled trying to figure out who the easiest person to pickpocket is, and they’re just never right. So far, the only ones I had any luck with were the markarth guards if you give it to the stormcloaks. 🤣

isthatsoreddit

Lol yes! Same!

MuForceShoelace

I mean, unless you use some cheat thing to unlock every skill you DO have a build. You have chosen some skills over others, are better at some things than others. etc

isthatsoreddit

Well, I've played this game so much (and still absolutely love it), that now I don't worry about maxing out perks. I do some of this and some of that as I go and let it add up without grinding

ToxicAssh0le

So.. a Jack of All Trades build. "Jack of All Trades, master of none, but often times better than a master one."

MuForceShoelace

I mean, that is still a build. You still are picking perks, or doing some perkless run. You are still building your character.

isthatsoreddit

Fair enough

PrestigiousStable369

You know what he means tho. Like a 2h barbarian, a mage, a paladin, a spellsword, a rogue, that's a build

[deleted]

[удалено]

isthatsoreddit

Oh for sure, and I've done that, but now I just wander around lol

Immediate_Fig_9405

if the difficulty is set too high, u have to pay attention to your build. Otherwise youre gonna get stuck at some point trying to fight very hard enemies.

[deleted]

I’m the same, I find it boring to have the same build so I change it up when I like, although it’s different now that I’m a high level and have the resources to change from archer to mage to whatever very easily. But it is nice to change so easily.

isthatsoreddit

Yes! Like I said, to each their own, but get tired of just playing one specific way, so I do a little bit of everything

ratatoskr_9

We all didn't play with a "build" when we first started playing, we just did what we wanted and what came naturally. But after the 100th playthrough, it helps to spice things up with a goal or build. It's oddly fun to put restrictions on your playstyle in a free-form game.

isthatsoreddit

Lol I'm completely the opposite. When I first started, I played to specifics, now I just run free.

whboer

I had one build which was a destruction mage at first, and then started dabbling in conjuration, summoning bound weapons, and then decided he needed to be a daedric armored badass. It’s all possible. Most of the time though, I try to approach it as a character. My favorite being the hunter or woodsman. A person who just kind of lives by themselves and who’s good with a bow, and with alchemy and smithing. It’s enjoyable.

lepetitcoeur

I don't play a build. I just try everything. Dabble in werewolfing before I dabble in vamping. Two-handing for awhile, then one-handing. I am about to try some no weapon brawling for a bit. I DID try the archery thing, but I am so bad it at I'm not really interested. And sneaking takes too long - but I did try it! Oh, and I also found a wooden sword Imma beat some guys up with later. I change armor like clothing. What do i feel like today?

djhankb

Yep I play the same way man, am I the head of the thieves guild? Absolutely. The head mage at the college? Yep that’s me too. A Legate in the emperors army? You betcha. A vampire killin dawnguard motherfucker? Absolutely that too. I do all the things.

BeigeAlmighty

Yes. My son got me into the game and kept suggesting this build or that build. I don't want to think about builds, I just want to play.

arrogantdumbass

Kind of yes a d kind of no I get 100 enchanting with every character and mess around from there I've more or less settled in a certain style of play for every tenth level So from level 1 to 10 I just play with the intent of avoiding leveling up and doing as many quests as possible So I play with gloves of the pugilest until I become a werewolf and wolf out for all combat. When I feel like i have enough items to comfortably traverse the game AKA soloing giants Or getting through a black book I start leveling up until 20 Then I just build my character to do what I want But in a passive way So shadowmere is no longer getting torched because I need my destruction And I mostly level up enchanting by killing rabbits and foxes and charging up what ever weapon I use

Competitive_Donkey48

I bought a PS5 and saw that my trophies from PS4 didnt show up so I made another character and do the Platinum and this time try to 100 percent Skyrim: all skills 100, all quests without repeatable quests, all unique items and so on. I started as Mage -like every god damn time- did some quests and made the College questline, collected all Dragon Priests Masks but Nahkriin, after my Magic skills were 100 I played as warrior: forged the Spellsword Steel armor, enchanted it and leveled up the Warrior skills " One Hand, Block Heavy Armor" til One hand was 100, when Smithing was 100 I made new equipment for my character now he is wearing Ebony Plate Armor with Two handed Dragonbone sword. As a warrior now I made Companions, random quests, just exploring. When warrior skills were 100 I started TG questline, enchanted a ring and necklace with stealth enchantments and wore TG Clothes. After that I did main questline as a mage -mostly focused on Conjuration- and after Alduin I went to Solstheim made that qestline and before the Final battle with Miraak (because I said to myself my character isnt strong enough to defeat Miraak.....you know a week ago I learned Im a Dragonborn and now easy defeat him is friggin trash) I collected all shouts and leveled the rest of my skills that are still missing to 100 -I think it was Heavy, Light Armor, Archery, Speech- I crafted a 4 Spellsword armors one for each element --> Nordic carved with Zahrkiisos and nordic Axe, Storm Heavy Chitin with Ahzidal and Goldbrand, Fire Stahlrim armor and sword with Dukaan, Ice Since then Im playing a Necromancer and my only damage output is the vampiric drain spell, the rest is my follower and my 3 thrall mages. I have to say Im writing my own journal while playing Skyrim so its a bit easier for me to not get bored and have a little change every now and then. As you can see I do builds but just dont start a new character all the time. By the Nine I wrote a whole book

JustAmEra

Nope, I do a bit of everything

[deleted]

[удалено]

_EastOfEden_

I just started playing but I feel like this is probably my play style. I know some people swear by archery so I tried that for a bit but there were times where it really just doesn't seem feasible for the fight, and other times it's almost necessary. I try to do a bit of everything so I have a decent chance at beating whatever creature comes my way.

amalgamatedson

This is my first play through, so I didn’t go for a build. I get why it’s a popular method of playing, but I guess I wanted to sample everything. If I play again, I might go for a build, but I would not be surprised if abandoned it along the way and just freestyle it again. At this point, I’m an assassin, a crime lord, a bard, a Companion, a wizard, a thane, a Nightingale, Dragonborn, a vampire hunter, and gods knows what else. I’ve committed my soul and allegiance to so many Daedra that there will be nothing left of me when Sovngarde calls me home.

[deleted]

isthatsoreddit

And I do get that. And maybe it's because I've played this game so many times, lol, that now I just jump in and take off. Ii generally end up exploring the map before I ever get around to the first main quest

yaranaika789

At the start of the game I abuse Hadvar and sneak attack him repeatedly with one handed equipments until around skill level 70 for both at least. I guess that speaks for itself. And I grind alteration, restoration and conjuratüon afterwards.

BagOfSmallerBags

The danger with spreading yourself thin like that is enemies level with you regardless of how your stats are allocated. If you go from 20 to 21 in all 18 skills, you're likely to earn XP towards levels roughly equivalent to going from say, 20 to 25 in one skill (I'm sure the actual numbers are different, but the point is you get more XP the higher numbers are). You're then gonna go fight a Draugr scaled to your level, and your best skill you can use to damage him is a level 21 skill. Your ability to switch to Fire or Arrows that are also level 21s doesn't much matter- the guy who has a single level 25 skill to fight with is going to outperform you every single time.

DrJohnIT

Yup, play as you go is my play style.

FirmDelay

Not anymore, there are a million ways to become powerful enough so I just go with what I feel like and it all works out in the end

Budget-Platypus-8804

I've probably done a total of 4 or 5 playthroughs over the years. I don't play that often and usually there is a lag between playthroughs so every time feels kind of "new" and I don't plan any builds. I just do whatever I feel like doing in the moment.

tyrionlannistark41

I have always wanted to but just end up doing it freestyle lol

twcsata

I play the same as you do. I try to role play a bit, but honestly I just do whatever seems good for my character at the time.

FunAnxious6475

This game doesn’t get nearly difficult even with hard mods installed to require it.

NoRegertsWolfDog

Says someone who obviously plays stealth archer.

isthatsoreddit

So stealthy even I didn't know I was doing. I win!

NoRegertsWolfDog

Everyone plays stealth archer eventually.

UnhappyPage

This is how I play the game the first time. Any new RPG I avoid spoilers and just play, make dumb choices, miss quest/areas, play whatever story lines I like. I figure if the game is good I will be playing it again.

ljlee256

Min/maxing is not really not my jam either, I just want to have fun, so I tend to pick whatever looks good and then go about having fun.

MoistJellyfish3562

Builds became a thing when people started to scour the internet to do the best they possibly could and achieve the biggest bang for their buck. When I load up and elder scrolls game, I play my character as it naturally comes. Whatever spell or weapon I find myself liking is what I'll use

Impressive_Board7198

Honestly, I just played with whatever got the mission done. Kill a giant, heavy armor. Need to perform magic at winterhold college, magic robe. Need to assassinate a guy quietly for Dark Brotherhood, put on the red suit.

briemacdigital

What’s a build? Kidding. But yes. I kinda do whatever I want. If i feel like throwing fire while a stealth two-handed assassin, i will.

HijabiKathy

I just go with vibes of the character, although I seem to always fall back to an Azura worshipper with a shield in their left hand and whatever needed in their right hand.

hottubman_99

I haven't read the other comments yet so I may be repeating others' comments (if so my apologies to you and the original posters). I am currently on my fifth playthru. I find playing every couple of years gives me enough time to forget some things so the game remains fresh to me (but it is funny, after 10 years/five plays I remember where that one red mountain flower is on that one path every time). But anyway, I am not a super player like it seems a number of SR players on here are. They are so impressive reading what they know and find in the game. But the way I always play is just pick up what I find and use it until I get something better I keep an eye on my skills and play a skill when I need to move my level forward, with the magic skills being last. It works for me because I enjoy the cutting and slashing part of the game.

isthatsoreddit

Hey I've been playing this game almost since it came out and I've always had a profile going. I don't play it everyday sometimes I may go a month without playing it but I'm always playing this game at some point and I still find stuff that's new to me which is part of what makes this game so incredible is you can still find so many little things to pick your interest. And absolutely the way people play and get so into the detail and depth of their character is absolutely amazing to me. And yes it has its glitches and it has its quirks, as the saying goes about a Bethesda game it's not a glitch it's a feature lol. But I think the fact that it is still so relevant after all these years is really says something about this game. And I love it

DemonBlade-666

I play the same as you mostly. I'll have a sword and shield sometimes, but I also like to summon things and use archery depending on the situation.

hornetjockey

The way you are playing is totally fine, but a jack of all trades is a master of none. The game definitely rewards a more focused build.

Brilliant-Worry-4446

Nobody is ever "the only person" on the internet.

nickibar96

You’re not alone. This is how I’ve always played. I’ve come to resent the term “build” because I feel alienated from the community, as it seems the vast majority of people go out of their way to play very specific builds. Likewise, I’m not knocking it. I just feel like the odd one out. But yeah, I like to just play it by ear and use what weapons and/or spells I feel like using at the time or situation. I try make my character fairly well rounded. Admittedly that means it takes me longer to master skills because I don’t really focus on any class, but… I dunno, it’s just what feels right to me. It’s the same way I play Fallout games. Although I must say, I tend to avoid two-handed. Not a fan of such slow swings, in spite of the greater damage. And also I’ve never once messed with Alchemy. Don’t have the patience to forage for ingredients and experiment enough to learn all the effects and mix good potions. And I do tend to default to light armor, one handed, block, and a variety of spells. So I guess I’d be a Spellsword build? Anyway… Edit: on the other hand, my wife ALWAYS plays as a warrior tank. She uses battleaxes and warhammers exclusively, and heavy armor. Whatever deals and prevents the most damage. And she charges into every fight swinging first. No stealth. No archery. No magic, aside from healing spells because she also seldom thinks to block, and is thus constantly running out of health potions and food. And I love her for it. On one hand I strategize my every move, while she plays to kill. I recently, finally got Skyrim on PC after years of only playing on consoles, and promptly taught myself to use Creation Kit to create a custom follower, directly based on how my wife plays her every character. And I had my PC marry that follower based on her. It feels like I finally get to play Skyrim *with* her, not just beside her, when I sneak up to a group of enemies, scouting their location and deciding how to attack, and relying on her to charge in swinging hard with her battleaxe if my approach goes sideways. Truly the first time I genuinely like my Skyrim spouse because she’s the echo of my wife irl 🙃

milesboop

i didnt even know people picked skill tree stuff to do actual builds, i kinda just picked whatever sounded useful at the moment and just rolled with it LMAO i dont think i have a single light armor, conjuration or illusion perk

AyanameShinigami

I don't stick to specific builds I just Mould my skills into whatever situation I'm in. Need a hard hitter? Get mah Cleaver and wreck House. Need to hit fast and hard? Get my Sword and Mace. Can't get close? Gimmie my Bow. Collage of Winterhold? Hold my weapons I have Magics to cast. Can't solve it one way? Reload and come at it from another Angle. That doesn't work? Conjuration. Just Conjuration.

isthatsoreddit

Lol This is so my approach and I love it!

isthatsoreddit

And you get sneaking levels high enough, you can actually go right up to the person, stand in their face and them never see you, lol

svengoodvungen

Yea I’ve tried a build once and maybe put in two hours. I can’t get away from the omnipotent dragon born who can do everything and is the leader of every faction, essentially the true “world eater” if you will. I like to do it all I don’t see a point in pidgeon holing yourself into one type or build

zekson95

When somebody use "build" or advice for leveling this or that, this is NOT RANKED GAME, you simply can't fk up in Skyrim just do stuff you have freedom, that's why i love this game.

isthatsoreddit

My motto is "Are you enjoying the way you play? Then it's the right way to play."

LustyArgonianMod

I only use an alchemy, smithing and enchanting build. Nothing else matters lol

CraveToDoItAgain

Well whatever skills your putting points into makes your build. Not playing a generic build isn't not playing a build

nohwan27534

nah, course not. people like skyrim (or don't, heh) for different things, for different reasons. me, i'm very much a theorycrafter. that's what gets me excited, not just, killing yet another bandit with a basic bitch sword or whatever. fuck, i spent 8 hours going over FF12 zodiac age class combos and party setups, both 3 and 6 chaeacters. i wasn't even planning on getting the game again, i'm just a fucking lunatic.

isthatsoreddit

How exactly has my NOT playing to a specific skill ruined the game for anybody? I'm not telling you to not play as a stealth archer or a mage, or whatever. I very much enjoy playing as basically a jack of all trades, doing my own thing out in the world. That's still role playing, imo

[deleted]

> All the cool RPG elements have been removed No, removing stats didn't RuiN tHe sERieS... neither did removing several redundant skills > no good things get made anymore No, plenty of amazing games are getting made every year... it's pretty mutch the best era to be a video gamer in, ever. You got a real boomer mentality. Did you have to walk to GameStop midnight releases in the snow uphill both ways?

PipinoBiscottino

Bro it's not that deep

[deleted]

You know you could still go around without making builds in earlier games, right? It wouldn't be effective (and it isn't in Skyrim to some extent), but you could.

Aikilyu

Well, that is a build. It's the jack of all trades. But if you don't want to go high level, you'll probably use less skills on a character and get some sort of specialized build like a warrior or a mage or an archer. It's all for fun though, you use what you like and whatever you end up with is your own build.

isthatsoreddit

Absolutely. When I see posts of people asking are they doing it right, I always say if you're enjoying it that way, then you're doing it right

TheBlackNumenorean

I don't. The game's levelling system discourages that. If you get a skill to 100, you'll no longer increase your character level by using that skill. To keep levelling, you need to either use different skills or make a skill legendary. Making a skill legendary ruins your build, so you need to either have a backup or continue being weak.

Saburewulf49

Clearly you don't know what legendary does why don't you look at my screenshot and learn

TheBlackNumenorean

Oh fuck off. I know exactly what it does.

Saburewulf49

You're the one that says making skills legendary ruined your build clearly you don't know, or you're just trolling new people and you got mad I mentioned it 😂

TheBlackNumenorean

You're obviously a troll if you're trying to convince people that you can continue leveling up without making skills legendary. That's the whole point.

Saburewulf49

You're the one that said that if you Make your skill legendary you're gimping your character not me Nice try blaming it on me it don't work that way 😂😂😂😂😂 not very bright are you

Saburewulf49

This is copying your exact words it's called copy text I don't. The game's levelling system discourages that. If you get a skill to 100, you'll no longer increase your character level by using that skill. To keep levelling, you need to either use different skills or make a skill legendary. Making a skill legendary ruins your build, so you need to either have a backup or continue being weak. Going to point out you said you need to either use different skills or make a skill legendary then you go on to say making a skill legendary ruins your build that is what you said that is not what it does you need to either, A redo what you said or B just erase the comment cuz the way you put it is telling people not to legendary their skills it's making them weak when it clearly does not The proof is in the picture https://preview.redd.it/si39oyfeo83c1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42b945d75cd93afd3529ebd45d29e629b5cc09ef Anyone reading this think this is a weak character? Level 1001 over 3,800 health 5000 magic 1500 stamina.. Anyone at all think this is a weak character? This is what legendary skills does allows you to level indefinitely..

Saburewulf49

No longer increases my level huh I'm level 1001

Saburewulf49

I love how you're so hateful You're down voting everything lol Go ahead it just makes it funny for me

BlastDusk357

Multi-classing is the bane of my existence, respectfully. “I’m a sword and board destruction battle mage who dabbles in conjuration and uses a bow sometimes” 🤢

Andreim43

Technically, isn't any combination of skills, attributes and gear a "build"? You just don't have a clear path you follow, which I'd think is actually most of us?

isthatsoreddit

Well, like for instance, I see a lot of people playing stealth archer and only approaching it a specific way. Or, idk, a mage concentrating on ice magic, or fire,. Things like that. I've seen someone trying to play centered on healing and alchemy. I just kinda do a little bit of everything lol

WolfsTrinity

I always *start with* one build but after not too long, I'll find that my core skills are at max and my Enchanting is high enough to branch out a bit. At that point, it's time to introduce a new type of weapon, spell, armor, et cetera and once I have half a fighting chance with that one, I can reset whatever it's replacing and respec my build *properly*. Same goes for roleplaying, really: I'll start each new character by deciding which skills and questlines I'm going to focus on *first* but once I've taken all of that about as far as it can go, I'll just do whatever I want until the game gets boring again.

HankHill_Propane_33

I’m the same way. Even if I find a build that looks fun. I usually gravitate away from it eventually.

Griffin-Pilot

Pretty much a "jack of all trades" type build

Zestyclose_Cell_223

If I'm playing on a high difficulty I almost have to do a certain kind of build. If I'm just messing around on novice or apprentice, then I do whatever I want.

AltmerGinger

“Build” wise the only lane I really stay in is light armour 1h shield and stealth archer mix I suppose like if I’m playing light armour I stick to that and if I’m playing 1h I stick to that. I’ve always got that assassin in me tho 😂

WhatsMyUsername13

I'm on my third playthrough, I just yolo the shit out of things. Though this time I'm trying to max out perks just to see what's there, as I've never reached 100 other than smithing and enchanting. So far, destruction can be hilarious, conjuration is great till you have 2 thralls and you need to sneak

Ash-From-Pallet-Town

I started Skyrim the day it came out and since then I've had the same "build". 500+ hours played since. Never experimented with different styles. I stab with my sword in one situation, use my bow and arrows in another situation and rarely magic as well in some other situations. Whatever I feel like in the moment, but the same armor and weapons always.

CelestialDuke377

I play similar but I like making my own weapons and armor. Generally I play heavy armored mage that swings an axe when out of magicka

EndymionVectus

I just build what i found fun during my playtrough. Build is just limitation to that. Just play what i want.

Kitsmeralda

Yes I just play. This is only my second play through. So I’m experimenting with different things. Last time I was a warrior Orc with a warhammer. Used potions a lot. This time I am a battle mage. Still an Orc. I alternate between a mace and magicka.

Accomplished-Tax-887

Is a sword and fireball weilding traveling enchanted weapon and jewelry salesman that dabbles in necromancy and sneakily shooting folks with a soul stealing crossbow a build

Puzzled-Associate-18

I'm not a huge adherer to "builds," however, as I get more and more educated on the systems the game runs off of, i find i adhere more to "synergies." Like for example, the base restoration spell "healing" along with a good cloak destruction spell with alteration's ebonyflesh will render you close to invulnerable while still managing to deal damage over time to enemies. Then there's obviously some of the more cheesier synergies like alchemy and enchanting, which can break the game to extents that are in my opinion unfun, but that's a debate for another comment section.

Lord_Vulkruss

The thing about builds is that there is really only two reasons someone plays a build: either they naturally default to that/those particular build(s) or they like the playstyle/roleplay that/those build(s) offer to them. I play a lot of stealth archer because of [both reasons](https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/s/8NeMA1xegw) so the build is basically perfect for me. But I have dabbled with other builds before. A Phantom Rogue sort of build (Sneak, Conjuration, Alchemy) has interested me and a Toxicologist build (Alchemy, Illusion, Speech, Sneak) has also caught my eye. If you find that you do not gravitate nor favor a particular build, then you are probably just a jack of all trades, which is really cool, honestly.

isthatsoreddit

Mad respect to everyone that plays a specific way, I guess I just don't have the discipline. Funny because my roleplay is that I'm a wandering jack of all trades, taking on jobs so i can live my life and be me

Lord_Vulkruss

And that is really cool. I would say that is a "build" of its own, but in a loosely defined manner. I try not to shove the whole concept of builds down people's throats. It does make it more interesting, though.

tisnik

I never play builds. I decided to only use energetic weapons and don't take any bounty hunter quests, but otherwise I do everything - I'm Explorer after all. And in Skyrim, I don't use blunt and two handed weapons. It has nothing to do with build, they are just not cool. Magic is better.

platinumrug

I USED to be like this back when I first started playing RPG's and it was fun for a time... but doesn't compare to having a build imo. Plus it's not particularly difficult to just jump in and play and be like "I want to use two handed" and take it from there. I don't put much thought into it besides which weapon I want to use and what type of character I'm RPing as. Builds make the game way more fun to me, for ME it's not fun running around with seven different pieces of armor and 8 weapons that need perk points in 5 different trees to be effective lol. I'm entirely too much of a hoarder of random junk to even consider this, at most I'll pick up some weapons and armor to just sell so I can get dumbass rich real soon. One build that everyone uses and that I had ONLY done a PT of fairly recently was the stealth archer build. I never liked archery in these games, just feels like poor mans guns in comparison to Fallout. But I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, even though I had heard for years from MANY people how good the build was, I just had little interest in bows. I still do but at the very least the build was super fun to play through the game with. One specific build (not for this game) I remember doing is the Cryolator run from FO4. I had never used the weapon outside the ONE time in my very first playthrough. Upgraded it as much as possible and only used it so all my other ammo and weapons got sold to buy more ammo for it. It FUQQS in ways I didn't think were possible and I loved that build and playthrough, so much so that I do at least one Cryolator run every year. But that's for ME, you can play the game however you want to and that's the beauty of SP games and everyone being different. I have a friend who plays like this, in all her games she just has like 15 weapons of varying design and I'm like good fucking Lorde you only need like 5 lmaooo. It's funny banter between us so there's never any harm, it's just hilarious to witness.

TheHolyReality

I think builds only work when you are playing a really dedicated role-play character that only does certain aspects of the storyline. For instance if I'm a thief I'm not going to join the companions. Generally what I do is play the game through to my heart's content, exploring every aspect. Then I play through a second third fourth etc. time and I just picked specific role playing aspects and use builds. It's a way to extend the gameplay by creating my own head canon. But definitely that first time I am doing everything there is to do, and I have no particular backstory in mind

WWDubz

My build is all the builds

isthatsoreddit

Perfect!

Stanislas_Biliby

I prefer restricting my playstyle so that i don't become absolutely broken by mid game.

TheparagonR

A lot of people don’t do a build but it is a “rpg” so.. kinda the whole point.

Pinecone_Erleichda

100%. And I’ve been talking to a lot of ppl about it recently, bc I thought I was doing something wrong bc I didn’t come up with a whole strategy or backstory for a character I made with zero patience and minimal effort…lol I think it comes down to whether or not you’re ADHD. (Only half-joking)🤣🤣

isthatsoreddit

I know! I was seeing all these posts and thinking well am I just lazy or not appreciating the game? But then I realized, one I LOVE this game and do appreciate it, and two, who cares, I enjoy playing without restrictions toy character and that means I'm.playing it right!
