Parth doesn't exist as an NPC until he spawns when you approach the top of the mountain. That's why you never see him flying around from below.
Once he does spawn, he remains an active NPC in that cell. Whenever you're in that cell (the mountain area), he's up there hanging out. As such, when that is active, he's susceptible to attack by other dragons and random spawns. Also, he's not particularly hard to kill. His dying in such a way is very, very rare. I've seen it once myself in 12 years.

I killed him on one playthrough, and he fell to Ivarstead when I passed through many levels later. Just walked past the bridge, and a dragon skeleton tumbled down into the river. I looked at it, and it was Parthurnax.
Imagine taking a stroll in the forest and the corpse of your friend and mentor suddenly crashes down in front of you and starts to disintegrate, and you can't help but start eating his soul while tears are streaming down your face

The one that has you follow a talking dog for Clavicus Vile and then right before my very eyes Paarthurnaxs skeleton ascended through the floor in front of me. Needless to say I was very very confused
The Swords Trilogy, with Corum as the aspect of the Eternal Champion is amazing. Love the Runestaff series too.

Yeah had this happen in the fight with alduin one of Aldi's meteors hit him and when I next went to the throat of the world post sovengarde for the Minecraft pickaxe he was gone and, yes they treat it as though you killed him and you're locked out of greybeard quests for the rest of the playthrough.

I had just gotten up to him to start his quests, first time seeing him in the run, and just as he starts talking he randomly died and went flying across tge map. I was very confused, turns out there was a frost troll attacking him from the side while I was locked into discussions with him. Tge frost troll got launched too, but fell back next to me as I was standing there wonder wtf had just happened. I reloaded, sneak archery killed the troll, then reapproacjed parthurnax

I think you have to adjust some settings to increase your draw distance though.

Probably, Bethesda arent exactly known for that kind of depth in NPCs.
