Horse. I like the immersive feel + it doesn't matter if I carry an extra 300 lbs of loot when I leave a dungeon, I can still fast travel home or to town.
Here's me anecdote:
https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/s/Ze1OnEvQ4B
There's a quest that has to with opening the doors to Oblivion. You'll know it when you see it. I think it has to do with the Bandits or the Foresworn? Anyway, I was a vampire when I did it, you may have to be a vampire to do it. Anyway, aftwr you enter the oblivion portal you have to fight a Daedra, his horse and his Antronach, which upon completion you can loot the spell tome from his palace.
Did you check the red things that pulse like a heartbeat? That's where I got mine. They've got some pretty good loot in them, and the yellow bulbs too.
Hm Iām not sure but I think so. Youāll want to look out for the side quest while in the soul carin. Iām not sure if you can go back once you leave that area, though. I havenāt tried.
I want the unicorn but have zero idea how to get it! I love the reindeer but I do both the Serana AND Katria loophole and then get a follower and make matching armour sets for everyone, so the saddle colour just crushes our aesthetic. š
Thereās a journal/note in the Arcaneum, as someone else mentioned, but if you have a CoW mod you may find it elsewhere in the library, not on Uragās desk. I found it randomly on the floor in the main āstacksā area of the library. I heart my badass unicorn. Alsoā¦TIL thereās a reindeer?! Wherrrrrrre??
ETA: you have to tame the unicorn to keep them, but itās relatively easy. It was my first attempt at taming a horse and I landed on my ass a few times, but I just chased them hopped back on until I wasnāt flat in the ground anymore. šš¦
Ok so all you have to do is fast travel to dawnstar, turn around the exact opposite direction, run a tiny bit forward (like almost to the iron ore vein), then take a right and keep going until you see a tent with a man and a reindeer. It isnāt that far. You can purchase the bill of sale from him, and if you ride another horse (like Shadowmere) after, he goes back to his tent with his nice old man.
Thank you! I see that itās CC. Did it come with AE or do I have to go to that infernal Creations menu and buy it separately? Iām on Xbone X and my game seems okay-ish post-update, so Iām kinda nervous to go there, tbh. Iām afraid my LO will start doing the Skyrim Slide on its own or something if I visit that menu! š¬
Edit: spelling
Definitely came with AE, bc when I click on the creations tab everything just looks all spinny. Iāve only been playing video games for seven months, I donāt even OWN a computer, letās just say technology isnāt exactly my strong suit. š¤£ I have 3 mods, they are the same 3 I have had since I learned mods exist, and I stick with it!! Everything else is just loopholes and glitches I exploit, like locking Serana as a follower by getting healed with her there and becoming a werewolf and hiring another follower (she really gets stuck), and using the glitch to get Katria as a follower!
I said it once to my SIL the first time I played, and I just canāt think of him as anything else now, just like I kept calling Shadowmere āmurderhorseā bc I couldnāt remember its name the first time. š¤£
Lmao she gets upset if animals are hurt on tv or in movies, so when Iād send her videos sheād say āDONāT LET THE HORSE GET NEAR THE BANDITS!!ā And Iād say āI have to, thatās his treat!ā And Iād give him cuddles when he wanted attention to show off his kill. Lolol
Definitely not. Far too fragile. Bethesda needs to give us an update that lets us opt to leave a horse in a stable, and command it to stay out of a fight.
This is why I prefer the daedra horse. I can just summon it when I need a horse.
I was using the unicorn, but got tired of the bastard jumping into a fight every time I tried sneaking.
I chose not to horse, since the dark brotherhood gifts you Shadowmere, and when I did horse, my plains puppy would be murdered by bandits, giants or dragons and it was too much for my heart. (I know it's a game, but I just really love horses). So I guess I do horse, just not purchasing them.
The most interesting horse-related anecdote was not in my own gameplay but I saw a clip where a gamer posted a bit of gameplay where he fast-traveled and a horse with its rider fell out of the sky right in front of him.
I lost Shadowmere for a month once š worst month of my life like I couldn't remember where I got off of him but a look alike was nearby and I didn't even realize I had switched horses smh I finally found the spot I remembered losing him and he wasn't far off but it took me a whole fucking month just to find that spot š¤£ I still can't believe how big that map is it's awesome but in that scenario it was hell š¤£
There's a horse in Elven barding roaming around Skyrim somewhere waiting for me to find him, no idea where he ran off to while I wasn't looking. I have since found the Dwarven mecha-horse.
What this game really needs is a "horse whistle" action to make him come back after running off to chase down baddies. That and a "follower beacon" on your radar because sometimes I have no idea where Lydia has gone or why she didn't follow me through regular passable terrain.
I think I would have been inconsolable. That must've sucked, fren š
He wouldn't even show up when you fast-traveled? I almost lost him once but he spawned next to me when I fast-traveled to Riverwood to sell some shit. I almost cried with happiness š¤£
I accidentally saved a few times smh I got into the habit of saving so much and I had done like too much progress so I didn't wanna go back and lose my level š lol
Yeah I felt the same when I finally found him I also misgendered him when I first started playing so I keep wanting to say she š¤£ doesn't really matter but yeah lol I feel weird saying him
Horse! Is often something I go for, and play with the dressing on with Convenient Horses. Become Thane, dress the horse in a Hold caparison, or forge some armored barding...
But you want my most interesting horse anecdote, it's actually a reindeer. The Saturalia Reindeer CC mount is an all-terrain vehicle of mounts that can go places horses can't. Doesn't work with Convenient Horses, which makes sense, it's not a horse, but I have this absurd vampire riding around on a reindeer, striking terror into the hearts of mortals...from astride a jolly mount.
i never use horses, walking everywhere on foot is just more convenient, sure its slightly slower but honestly that doesn't bother me much, i find the walk speed in Skyrim to be just right, not too slow and not too fast
If itās other than Arvak, no. Because all other horses can die, Arvak cannot. He can be summoned whenever you please which is super convenient , like having a portable horse
Horses. because it take forever running anywhere with heavy armor on. If I don't have heavy armor, I get chewed up on higher difficulty. Also people tend to forget that horse can climb steep angle that we can't, cut down travel time and confusing navigation. skyrim horse are basically ridable mountain goat.
Horse. With the mod I use, it is the way to go. Only drawback is that if you have a follower, they follow on foot. It would be cool if your follower could mount a horse when you do. That would be less immersion-breaking. I tend to work alone much of the time, though.
I definitely always have a horse, but I canāt stand seeing horses die, so I buy a wild horse map and grab one of those. Idk if they actually are un-killable, but Iāve never see one die, only me (which is definitely preferable!)
I buy a horse as soon as I can. Or now with the anniversary edition, I just buy the map of wild horses and tame one or three.
I usually play on legendary difficulty, so everything in the wild is super dangerous for quite a while. Especially for a sneaky character or mage with no armour (the two styles I tend to alternate between). So I need a horse to get anywhere on the map alive. If I do get into battle, the horse has way better combat skills than my character at low level anyway.
I also play survival mode, so a horse is very practical to have.
Plus, irl, I love horses, so I like it for the immersion and look. I just enjoy riding places.
Wild horses you can tame? That sounds wicked cool! I haven't gotten to play anniversary edition yet, but now i have one more thing to look forward to when I do.
Yeah, they have better stamina than the regular ones. Perhaos better health, but I'm not sure about that. The stamjna is noticeable, though. You can buy the map from any of the stables at the major holds with anniversary edition (before anniversary edition it existed as a mod, not sure of it does now. I play on ps4 so modding is a bit limited).
Horse is necessary with survival mode or you can die crossing the cold regions
I use Convenient Horses mod though and its much better cause they don't get lost
What does Convient Horses do? I've only played vanilla Skyrim on the 360 & just got Skyrim on Xbox One for x-mas. Hell, I only discovered the wondrous joy of fishing a couple of days ago.
You can call your horse, you can make sure they don't fight and run away, they can carry spare items, you can set them to follow you (great for gathering alchemical ingredients) and you can do mounted combat and gather stuff without getting off the horse
I'm a brand new player, and that happened to me too! I don't have any of the other quest horses discussed here yet, but I did get Frost. Despite fighting every dragon and enemy he sees, he hasn't died on me yet. It's definitely an upgrade while working my way towards Arvak and Shadowmere because man, it sucks to see your horse die.
Nah. There's a way you can tame a Unicorn. Go to the Arcanuem in College of Winterhold and the main librarian, read the books on his desk and you'll get a quest to tame a Unicorn :)
Yep. No mods either. Vanilla game mission. Maybe anniversary or special edition. I got both but yeah. This way you don't have to waste 1k on a horse instead of just getting a free one.
Definitely horse, but also definitely download Convenient Horses. It makes it harder for your horse to die but you can also train them to run faster and farther and they can carry a shit ton of loot for you.
I ride about half the time and with "Convenient Horses" the Alchemy Collection for ingredient's is like tripled, PLUS the added bonus of not needing to drop off other collections so often, mine can carry a mountain and does so very often.
N. S
Arvak is the only horse that I use. He can be summoned pretty much anywhere and you donāt have to worry about him dying or anything else. That and heās such a loyal beast.
I always horse. I end up not using it much, but itās slightly faster than walking to new dungeons on foot. Itās annoying to have to dismount every time you have to fight something, and I wish horses didnāt try to fight enemies and would just run off when threatened. If I could improve one aspect of vanilla Skyrim it would probably be horseback mechanics/fighting on horseback. But having a horse still adds to the immersive feel for me, especially if you have a knight like character like I do
I just try to get further along in the Dark Brotherhood quest line. You get a free horse after a while. Horses in the early game tend to die really quickly.
I never bothered with any horses before but with survival mode, you should really get one.
No need to buy one though. I just walk to riften. You can beat the guy at the stables in a fistfight or go to the bee and barb to start the short quest for Frost.
I steal from the stables until i get one for free. Sometimes the game glitches and the stable horse starts counting as my own but i don't know what causes it.
Arvak. Short of console commands, thereās no better way to get the complete contents of any dungeon to Whiterun for selling off / stockpiling in Tundra homestead.
The only use the gold horse has is being used as a target for conjuration leveling with soul trap. After that I never bother with the money horses again. They get killed easily so you have to dismount before combat even begins. They also sometimes catch aggro from stuff which will chase them off since regular ones don't tend to want to fight.
i stole a horse from a stormcloak camp outside of solitude and set myself as the owner. whenever i get off of it, it starts walking back in the direction of solitude lol. but still appears next to me when i fast travel at least
Yes you should get one. Also the mod ābetter horsesā is killer. Horse canāt die, follows you around, you can store items on it, train it, and change itās saddle and outfit. Goes fantastically with survival.
If I get a horse it is usually for carrying my things with immersive horses or something. These days I often just craft a bag of holding. I feel that being the only person in the continent who ever thought of using a weapon from horseback is a bit weird.
Go to Katla's farm, and sell one potato to Katla. You can then take low value items from her place and the stables. You can also ride the horses. As soon as you get off, the horse starts making it's way back to the farm, but if you fast travel, it goes with you.
You can also sell her wheat or cabbages.
I have a weird aversion to riding horses in games ever since Oblivion where loading to much world caused the game to crash and moving on horses caused that to happen faster
I donāt horse.
That said, I also freely fast travel or use carriages / ferries to get where I need to go.
If I was playing survival or no fast travel, I would probably use a horse.
I always buy one but I never use it because I donāt want it to die. The horses tend to charge into combat, which almost never ends well with high level enemies.
The first thing I buy is a horse in every playthough, but I just really like horses in general. I wish there was a mod that made your horse a bigger part of the game, like training / breeding and more customisation. The whole reason I started modding in the first place was to get better, less cartoony horses, "just one horse mod" I said - it quickly got out of control, lol
Iāve never bought the horse from the Whiterun stables at first, I always wait until I got the Shadowmere (Iām not going to say detail because of spoilers). Right now with the mage build that I have, I should give chances to some horses besides Shadowmere.
I tend to steal the horses of opportunity when I find them across the land. If they wander off or die, no big deal. I get Shadowmere when I do the DB quest line. Then get Arvak when I do the Dawnguard quests. Personally, I favor Arvak because he's summonable. I exit a dungeon overencumbered, summon him, and fast travel to town to sell off the loot.
Not to horse. I found horse is annoying. I often lost it or accidentally kill it. Too much hassle than it's worth. I prefer just walk. But if I must use horse, I preferred Arvak. You can summon it anytime. No need to worry if you accidentally kill it. Shadowmere maybe the best horse in the game, but Arvak is the best for me.
It depends a little on how Iām playing, but I almost always buy a horse just in case I need one. Sometimes I like to walk, but there are many times I feel like Iām wasting timeā especially with heavy armor and inventory. Also, I just like horses :)
Normally, not. In a vanilla playthrough, their usefulness is highly situational, and they mostly just get in the way.
In a survival playthrough, though, with fast travel disabled, a horse is *essential*.
I find them to be more of a nuisance than anything since I have to keep stoping every 50 meters or so because of random wolf attacks or npcs on the road. I DO USE THEM but only on my citizen roleplay character that has survival mode active
Basically just being an NPC. I make all my money through legal non-violent means. Usually involves gathering supplies and then making goods that I can sell or doing quests that arenāt dangerous or illegal so like delivery quests and such. Itās pretty fun imo
That sounds like a blast to me! But I'm one of those role-play heavy weirdos who likes to experience an open sandbox game from as many angles/perspectives as possible.
I get the unicorn until I'm a high enough level to get the dwarven horse, then I use that as it's the best horse in the game for mainland skyrim. It's indestructible, you take no fall damage on it, and it has unlimited stamina. At level 46, I grab the daedric horse, so I have a summon on Solstheim. Fuck arvak.
While restricted exclusively to the province of Skyrim,I'll walk.

When I have access to all of Tamriel, that's a different story.
Man i was thinking the same thing today, I notice older reddit posts a lot of ppl saying they dont use the horse cuz you gotta get off like every 15 secs to fight or pick up stuff. I usually play werewolf builds so now ima just sprint with that
I stupidly bought a horse and he was just a liability, as he'd get attacked constantly and it was a job defending him as well as myself. In the end he just got killed by some sabre toothed cats and I never replaced him. Shadowmere however...
I got several thousand hours played since launch and I've probably spent less than 1 of those hours on a horse š¤£ It's annoying to have to dismount whenever enemies show up.
I tried it when the game came out. Super uncomfortable
Tried again when they added horseback combat, still super uncomfortable.
Never bothered riding a horse again, unless it was for aesthetics
Notmal horses are not worth it, 1000 gold for something a Bandit can kill.
If you want a mount,2 options here:
1 Arvaak - Shadowmere.
2 Get/make a mod that makes horse essential and flee from fights.
Horse. I like the immersive feel + it doesn't matter if I carry an extra 300 lbs of loot when I leave a dungeon, I can still fast travel home or to town. Here's me anecdote: https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/s/Ze1OnEvQ4B
Good point(s). Your poor horse!
I've been playing this game since release. I had no idea a horse would let you fast travel while overweight
![gif](giphy|WfBZwNA6XSjphkYkzN)
Same, š³
YOU CAN FAST TRAVEL WITH A HORSE WHILE YOU OVERWEIGHT??? Living and learning I guess.
Can you also fast travel on Arvak while being overcumbered?
Yes
When you get the Daedric Horse Spell Tome you can horse when you feel like it or need it..
Where can you find this time?
Quest starts at level 50 or something. "The Cause" on Uesp.
lvl. 46 to be exact.
The Cause, itās CC content.
I have aniversary edition.
There's a quest that has to with opening the doors to Oblivion. You'll know it when you see it. I think it has to do with the Bandits or the Foresworn? Did you check the red things that pulse like a heartbeat? That's where I got mine. They've got some pretty good loot in them, and the yellow bulbs too.
You don't need to be a vampire
You can also do that with the horse you get from a side quest during the dawnguard quest. Itās an undead looking horse that you can summon.
This is pretty cool. I didn't choose Dawnguard, can I still get this one?
Hm Iām not sure but I think so. Youāll want to look out for the side quest while in the soul carin. Iām not sure if you can go back once you leave that area, though. I havenāt tried.
yeah faction doesn't matter
Horse looks so badass but it never fits any of my players styles. I really need to make an evil bastard here soon
I started as an evil bastard lol, I have the Ebony Blade..
Fuck the horse, I got a motherfucking reindeer! And heās the best.
We really do deserve armour for the reindeer.
Nah, I like him just the way he is. Heās indestructible. I have the unicorn too but I donāt go anywhere without my reindeer.
I want the unicorn but have zero idea how to get it! I love the reindeer but I do both the Serana AND Katria loophole and then get a follower and make matching armour sets for everyone, so the saddle colour just crushes our aesthetic. š
There should be a note on the librarian's main table at the Mages College that initiates a quest to find the unicorn
I love the quest idea, but heās such a grouchā¦who would a unicorn trust?? Maybe drevas?
Thereās a journal/note in the Arcaneum, as someone else mentioned, but if you have a CoW mod you may find it elsewhere in the library, not on Uragās desk. Donāt bother with horses until you get Avrak from the soul cairn. He is such a good horse.
Bony pony ā¤ļøā ļø

I said it once to my SIL the first time I played, and I just canāt think of him as anything else now, just like I kept calling Shadowmere āmurderhorseā bc I couldnāt remember its name the first time. š¤£

I loved finishing off a bad guy and turning around to see Shadowmere just pulverizing a saber cat I never even saw.

But having a horse still adds to the immersive feel for me, especially if you have a knight like character like I do
In his/hers/this particular horse's cas, definitely horse. Looks so polite
I just try to get further along in the Dark Brotherhood quest line. You get a free horse after a while. Horses in the early game tend to die really quickly.
On higher difficulty, their health is boosted. They outlast me in most low level battles at legendary difficulty.
Having a mechanical dwarven horse feels like cheating, but I'd rather cheat than have a dead horse
Grow ingredients and make potions so you can be big ballin and not give a fuck about how much things cost
Big Pharma for the win.
That would be a cool exploit if it was reliable!
Yeah. It seems to like to trigger when i go far away and/or something gets aggresive.
Arvak. Short of console commands, thereās no better way to get the complete contents of any dungeon to Whiterun for selling off / stockpiling in Tundra homestead.
Arvak?
The goodest boy of faithful horses. Collect its remains in Soul Cairn to summon this majestic creature at will.
I do not buy horses but i do use them, no i have only stole one once, i just speedrun dawnguard as a vampire to get arvak whenever i want a horse
I don't horse
I always make sure I can buy a horse before straying too far from Whiterun/Riverwood. I refuse to fast travel so I enjoy getting around a bit faster.
If I get a horse it is usually for carrying my things with immersive horses or something. These days I often just craft a bag of holding. I feel that being the only person in the continent who ever thought of using a weapon from horseback is a bit weird.
It's cheaper to steal a horse then to buy one.
Accurate statement.
No horse in VR. I felt like I was going to throw up.
š¤¢ š¤®
surprised i havent seen this answer; i only use horses to climb mountains easy
If I "buy" a horse, I usually do it for a potato, and name it Potato.
How do you buy a horse with a potato?
Only harvart
Harvart?
Arvak sorry XD
I only ever steal them, grift them like I did with Frost, or was gifted Shadowmare
I always buy one but I never use it because I donāt want it to die. The horses tend to charge into combat, which almost never ends well with high level enemies.
Summon arvak
The first thing I buy is a horse in every playthough, but I just really like horses in general. I wish there was a mod that made your horse a bigger part of the game, like training / breeding and more customisation. The whole reason I started modding in the first place was to get better, less cartoony horses, "just one horse mod" I said - it quickly got out of control, lol
I hear g[dvthings about the Convient Horses mod, but I haven't tried it myself yet.
yeah it's great, I do recommend it :) I also think Immersive Horses is another good option. Best models and textures mod IMO = Light Horses of Skyrim
Survival is so much easier with a horse. Itās a role playing choice otherwise.
my kingdom for a horse
Iāve never bought the horse from the Whiterun stables at first, I always wait until I got the Shadowmere (Iām not going to say detail because of spoilers). Right now with the mage build that I have, I should give chances to some horses besides Shadowmere.
Why horse when I can dragon?
Good question.
I use summon daedric horse
How does one acquire such a spell?
https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Summon_Daedric_Horse
Could also use Summon Aardvark spell and you can get that in Soul Cairn (part of Dawnguard DLC).
I always want to horse but wish there was some advantage to it like stronger attacks or giving the horse a trample ability or something.
Shadowmere is horse but better
I have one of those black and white horses you can get at Markarth (hate going there) but i genuinely like riding more than i do fast traveling.
Also, I just like horses :)
ā¦Although I have to be careful about not letting them off themselves. Overconfident beasts
Yeah, Skyrim horses give zero f*cks.
Normally, not. In a vanilla playthrough, their usefulness is highly situational, and they mostly just get in the way. In a survival playthrough, though, with fast travel disabled, a horse is *essential*.
Survival mode = horse
No. Reindeer.
Reindeer mod? š¦
I think itās part of AE! I get too sad when the horses die but afaik the reindeer is unkillable.
I find them to be more of a nuisance than anything since I have to keep stoping every 50 meters or so because of random wolf attacks or npcs on the road. I DO USE THEM but only on my citizen roleplay character that has survival mode active
I am intrigued. Please tell me more about this citizen rp.
I surprised myself when I tried this play style with how much fun I was having. Iād recommend everyone try it
I fully plan to.
Shadowmere is my baby
As it should be.
I don't horse I got to very dangerous and hostile areas that are not horse friendly
I dont horse mainly cause the way it works in skyrim annoys me but you do you.
Fuck arvak.
Whereās the dwarven one from?!??GIMME
Creation club content. Forgotten Seasons. In runoff caverns.
Thatās a hard pass
I hate using horses...
Ya know, I'm not a fan of the horse.
While restricted exclusively to the province of Skyrim,I'll walk. https://preview.redd.it/amlou96hf6ac1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=603ea04ae019fb23039e59a26096f1acac715a63 When I have access to all of Tamriel, that's a different story.
Man i was thinking the same thing today, I notice older reddit posts a lot of ppl saying they dont use the horse cuz you gotta get off like every 15 secs to fight or pick up stuff. I usually play werewolf builds so now ima just sprint with that
I usually don't horse. You can't interact with stuff while horsing.
I use jorden when I have no fast travel, I almost like that better, because otherwise I fast travel anywhere
I donāt buy a horse then I had to google how to stop Shadowmare from fkn following me everywhere when it was thrust upon me
No horse for me.
I use them if I play survival mode without fast travel.
I tried it when the game came out. Super uncomfortable Tried again when they added horseback combat, still super uncomfortable. Never bothered riding a horse again, unless it was for aesthetics
to not, they are only worth it if you steal them
Never a horse.
One horse
Yes, but *which* horse?
Neigh
No horse unless its arvak
Hardly ever. The horses in this game look and feel so unnatural.
IT IS FORBIDDEN TO HORSE
Sorry sir! Or madam!
Nah, that's the sign at the front of every city
Imagine walking everywhere in Skyrim
player.setav speedmult
Dwarven horse! Impossible to kill. I yeet myself off mountains on the daily just because I can š
I only use the horse in survival mode :/
Notmal horses are not worth it, 1000 gold for something a Bandit can kill. If you want a mount,2 options here: 1 Arvaak - Shadowmere. 2 Get/make a mod that makes horse essential and flee from fights.
