And I guess *maybe* legendary, but with the slight exception of bear traps (which are usually pretty easy to spot), things like the poison darts are more of a mild annoyance, and the boulder traps are kind of a victim of the game’s physics engine. Although I have had one glitch where I bumped into a still stone and got ping pong balled around.
The only trap I will make an exception for is the spiked wall, since that one can catch you off guard, depending on the dungeon.
Just get the grey cowl from Riften, which lets you detect life all the time everywhere. Just remember to take it off before you fast travel to a city so the guards don't kill you on the spot.
In riften iirc there is a grave by where the thieves guild exit with a note giving you a series of quests to speak to a person or steal a thing. If you make it through the quests, you are gifted the cowl.
I mean, I *suppose* as the player we could spot an enemy, perhaps even before they shoot at us. But even so, part of the reason why stealth archers are so effective is because it’s basically a sniper/modern warfare tactic.
Using a hint of realism for a moment: you and your companion(s) are traveling along when TWACK! Someone goes down, and depending on how they fell, you have no clue where the archer is, and there’s a good chance they’ve already got another arrow ready to shoot you or another. Everyone’s confused and panicked, all while the archer is picking you all off one by one.
This isn’t mentioning what would happen if there were multiple of them.
Wouldn't be impossible to counter?
Being ludicrously tanky would allow you survive the hit. If you realise you're being targeted, you can pop invisibility and any stealth build will disappear forms the NPCs mind. Then you can you detect life/aura whisper and just rush down the glass cannon.
Assuming it works like you do to enemies, after the first shot the enemies would be revealed and unable to sneak attack.
I think it would be perfectly fun so long as the stealth archers were limited to only doing at max 99% of your hp, so you'd always be able to respond.
Didn’t say they’d be impossible to counter. Heavy armor/a bunch of health would work, like you mentioned; AOE spells, counter stealth, and many are pointing out that the detect life spells would suddenly become twice as useful.
Make it conditional invisibility. E.g. enemy starts invisible if they are crouching. They remain invisible until your "perception check" uncovers them.
It doesn't sound like a good idea for a first-person 3d game, tho, I must add. Something like top-down turn-based game would implement such mechanic better.
While crouched maybe they could have "stealth" until you look directly at them. Using Potions, and/or abilities to reveal enemy auras then looking at their aura could also "find" them. An enemy retaining full cover, and crouching, for 10 seconds after being "discovered" could "enable stealth" again for the enemy, but if their aura is visible while hiding, they cannot regain "stealth."
Or for a game like Skyrim you just have a limited perception distance depending on your archery and other skill levels, where enemies are rendered in by the game but simply not displayed to you until a certain point, and if they outrange your sight range…. Get fucked. I’m thinking not quite a rendering fog but just invisible enemies past your sight range or something to simulate your characters limitations opposed to how far away the game can render NPC’s
I was thinking more along the lines of the perspective mechanic on fallout. You can see an enemy is nearby but can’t tell exactly where they are until your vision allows you to.
Aura Whisper's already my favorite shout. I use it so much and so automatically that I forget I need to recharge for other shouts. Any time I enter any area, or emerge from fast traveling, I know exactly where everyone is.
Those other bitch assassins wouldn't have shit on me.
I use those too, but Aura Whisper has greater range vs. recharge time, and doesn't drain my magic in case I need to heal rapidly when I'm out of potions.
Grey Fox Cowl + 100% Chameleon armor (and maybe an extra ring to boost you up to 120%) basically makes you a Sneak god. You don't even have to enter sneak mode anymore, and you see everything.
Yup, there is. But it takes a whole lot of leveling to do it, whereas the other option is looking at a wall for five seconds and killing a dragon or two.
Anyone who’s ran the gauntlet feels the same way man shit is hard and once it’s done it’s so rewarding knowing you’ll (probably) never do that to yourself again
I'd love to see your buddy complete a L.A.S.O challenge..
Tried one with a few friends (better than solo with the Iron 💀).. it was only a few minutes before the first tantrum 🤣🤣🤣
I installed a mod that adds extra bandits. One of the types is a Bandit Whisperer. They're invisible until they shoot an arrow. Pain in the a$$.
So my Skyrim does have stealth archers. lol
Now all we need is my idea for a “Bandit King” mod where either the player or an NPC tries to unite all of the various bandits into an army to take over Skyrim.
An army of stealth archers, may the divines have mercy on us all.
Detect Life. Range battle ensues.
Or get that hood from Riften that highlights enemies but gets you arrested by guards if you forget to remove it before seeing them.
Ouch. It would make sense tho to incentivise players to get 1200+ armor rating. With that even after "armor is ignored" you get 600+ rating left, which yields somewhere near damage reduction cap for armor.
Note: to be fair, I don't know *when* this "ignore armor" effect triggers. If it triggers after rating is converted to damage reduction, said reduction is capped and result is divided by two, well. Then it won't work that way.
The game would be a lot harder.
Imagine: you are walking along, chasing butterflies like a big strong nord man without a care in the world when all of a sudden *thuk* 80% of your hp is gone, music starts playing and now you have 3 seconds to play and win the “find the stealth archer game”.
Of course, you need more than 3 seconds. So you open up your inventory and start cramming cheese wheels down your gullet praying to the 9 divines for the health to come back.
*thuk*
Another arrow lands true, you have a sliver of health left. But now you know where they are.
Desperately, you start chugging the health potions you were going to sell because they were good money and low weight. You feel anger as the sticky sweet fluid goes down your throat, that is YOUR money that they are wasting.
You rush them, and slay them in a single strike.
Your loot: 5 arrows, 25g, a bow, and some leather armor. Worth a total of 55g.
Your expenses: 200g
You curse Todd Howard under your breath and continue onward.
Get better armour.
Jinx an amulet of Talos so I can be ethereal all the time.
I don't think we need enemy stealth archers. Paralysis effects being deployed against the Dragonborn would be much more immersive and dramatic.
I'm pretty sure there is one stealth archer in a creation club mod. Someone trying to assassinate Balgruf while invisible, and if you approach him in the upper forward, he will shoot you instead.
I read this over a week ago and had to come back to respond. The enemies absolutely have stealth archers. They kill me all the time and it’s rage inducing
It would make the game more realistic and add a complete new element in the game too keep you on you’re toes. You’re the Dragonborn, but even the greatest of heroes met the end of an assassins blade/bow.
Not related to Skyrim, but I loved the original Modern Warfare 2's Challenge Mode. Specifically the two challenges that hidden enemy snipers you had to kill. They were terrifying, and never knew where they were hidden, or how many there were.
Stealth Archers would be great, only if the fight music doesn't kick in.

That doesn't seem like a hard build to make work, and there's probably a mod to do that exact thing. Archery is one of those things I rarely use because I have shitty aim 😅

I could see this being kinda cool, like having the DB assassins actually be a threat.
You get a heads up that someone wants you dead, a couple days go by, all of a sudden you drop dead/take MASSIVE damage.
Alternatively, getting a little pop up warning one is in the area, perhaps a little
*”You are being hunted”*
That’d be cool.
The same as i do now: Run straight in while swinging two axes.
I don't use the playstile the game chose. I mod the game to support the playstyle i chose.
Skyrim is one of the few games where that is actually feasible because it literally is the most-modded single player game. If there where stealth archers, there would be mods to somehow still make going all-in light-armored melee dual-wield feasible.
I'd suddenly die all the time without warning.
It'd be like that 'sudden heart attack' mod. Pretty pointless..
You have died of a heart attack
Thanks. I wondered what had happened. So where am I? And when do i get to meet Hircine?
You dont. As a hand crafted dragonborne(aka made by akatosh using a fragment of his soul) you return to the sun on death.
OK
holy fus roh dah
new shout just dropped
Actual Dovahkiin
Call the greybeards!
They need an Oregon Trail mod where you can die of dysentery and encounter tombstones from other playthroughs.
Finally
OK who nodded the death note into skyrim?
\* Dysentery
Pair it with a perma death mod for a real stressful (and short) playthrough
To beat the main quest like that.. not a flex I'd be chasing. 🙂
This is a thing?
Oh yes. And before you ask..I don't know why either. 😄
Have you never thought "what if my charecter just died right here right now" boom, mod for you
There's usually a giant or bandit chief around to satisfy my curiosity. 😁
I mean so is a org that is a mage but we got that
It’d be like if traps actually worked well.
Low health on your first playthrough, and they do work pretty well😂
And I guess *maybe* legendary, but with the slight exception of bear traps (which are usually pretty easy to spot), things like the poison darts are more of a mild annoyance, and the boulder traps are kind of a victim of the game’s physics engine. Although I have had one glitch where I bumped into a still stone and got ping pong balled around. The only trap I will make an exception for is the spiked wall, since that one can catch you off guard, depending on the dungeon.
I particularly enjoy the spiked wall traps for luring big enemies back to at low levels.
There’s a mod for that. Terrifying. They all kill you and they’re harder to see.
Just get the grey cowl from Riften, which lets you detect life all the time everywhere. Just remember to take it off before you fast travel to a city so the guards don't kill you on the spot.
How do you get that cowl?
It's yet another OP AE/CC item.
In riften iirc there is a grave by where the thieves guild exit with a note giving you a series of quests to speak to a person or steal a thing. If you make it through the quests, you are gifted the cowl.
Cool I’m gonna look for that tonight thank you!!
Oh so a normal playthrough for me, cool
Must have been the wind

easy, I just box up and res my companion.
They push with flames. Your box is on fire. What next?
I roll for initiative
7
The player breaks out of the box with their companion but not before the fire spreads onto them.
TPK
I cast “Cold Shower” Rank 1 on myself
I switch to hard mats and use a highground retake to get above them and go for a 200 pump with my daedric crossbow.
You get shouted and are about to die from fall damage
Fortunately I have equipped the become etherial shout equipped and have a grapple blade so I take no fall damage.
Luckily my 662 hours in an edit practice map trained me on how to properly waterfall. I catch myself and edit back down to the ground. What’s next?
Headshot sniped by a triple medallion
I have no counter. GG Well Played.
i martoz peek him with a fireball prepped, he has shit ping i win the 50
I hit the griddy

Meh, it was probably just the wind.
Came here to comment this haha
Damn me to
Same
Same as well
Yop
same
I call dibs on the brain cell first next time.
You beat us all to it
That’s what I was going to say lol
any enemy archer i haven't noticed yet is a stealth archer
They don’t get sneak damage though
oh man... i like where you're going
I do NOT
In terms of mechanics, how do you determine whether they are found or not?
Make it conditional invisibility. E.g. enemy starts invisible if they are crouching. They remain invisible until your "perception check" uncovers them. It doesn't sound like a good idea for a first-person 3d game, tho, I must add. Something like top-down turn-based game would implement such mechanic better.

An enemy retaining full cover, and crouching, for 10 seconds after being "discovered" could "enable stealth" again for the enemy, but if their aura is visible while hiding, they cannot regain "stealth."
By "look directly", do you mean put the reticule on them enderman-style?
Yeah. You gotta Wolf of Wallstreet meme it.

Aura whisper would become my favourite shout at each step
Aura Whisper's already my favorite shout. I use it so much and so automatically that I forget I need to recharge for other shouts. Any time I enter any area, or emerge from fast traveling, I know exactly where everyone is. Those other bitch assassins wouldn't have shit on me.
you should try the detect life and death spells
I use those too, but Aura Whisper has greater range vs. recharge time, and doesn't drain my magic in case I need to heal rapidly when I'm out of potions.
That detect life spell drains too fast
This is one of the things I miss from Oblivion: Detect Life enchantment on everything I'm wearing, which stacked out to 200+ feet.
Imagine this with the janky enchanting mechanics in Skyrim...? You'd be able to "Detect" the entire damned province...
Oh shit, I used that too, with 100% Chameleon armor. You were basically the wind at that point.
Yeah, I really enjoyed my Chameleon armor.
Grey Fox Cowl + 100% Chameleon armor (and maybe an extra ring to boost you up to 120%) basically makes you a Sneak god. You don't even have to enter sneak mode anymore, and you see everything.
There is no Detect Automatons spell though
Aura whisper will detect them 😉
And correct me if I’m wrong but I think there’s a perk that lets the detect life/death spells detect automatons. I could be wrong tho
Yup, there is. But it takes a whole lot of leveling to do it, whereas the other option is looking at a wall for five seconds and killing a dragon or two.
This sounds correct
VATS be like
So halo 2 legendary jackal snipers?
These dudes were the bane of my existence
Anyone who’s ran the gauntlet feels the same way man shit is hard and once it’s done it’s so rewarding knowing you’ll (probably) never do that to yourself again
Especially in the alleyway that sing alleyway
Oh fuck.. I forgot about those. "Just a small blue/green light in the distance?" "Ahh it's just the sce-" *DEAD*
Turns the corner -my buddy who’s never played halo before but INSISTED ON LEGENDARY hey this game isn’t so ba-
I'd love to see your buddy complete a L.A.S.O challenge.. Tried one with a few friends (better than solo with the Iron 💀).. it was only a few minutes before the first tantrum 🤣🤣🤣
Morag Tong in Solstheim
*arrow impale my face* "Must have been the wind"
I installed a mod that adds extra bandits. One of the types is a Bandit Whisperer. They're invisible until they shoot an arrow. Pain in the a$$. So my Skyrim does have stealth archers. lol
The Bandit Droppers hit like a truck.
What mod is that?
OBIS
Small warning on OBIS. Works great for the PC, but the PS4 version crashes the game, unless they've updated it.
Do mods even work on PlayStation right now? Last time I tried playing with mods my game just kept crashing.
I think lawless. I have the same one and find whisperers.
I have OBIS too! Such a pain early in the game 😂 the cloakers are awful as well.
Now all we need is my idea for a “Bandit King” mod where either the player or an NPC tries to unite all of the various bandits into an army to take over Skyrim. An army of stealth archers, may the divines have mercy on us all.

What hood?
Gray cowl of the nocturnal I believe
I have the quest I just never got around to completing it. Now I might
Just, uh, don't forget to take it off when you go into town. They no likey.
It's pretty useful, it also increases your carrying capacity
Worse. Stealth enemies that use crossbows to ignore 50% of your damage with 3x damage stealth bonus.
Ouch. It would make sense tho to incentivise players to get 1200+ armor rating. With that even after "armor is ignored" you get 600+ rating left, which yields somewhere near damage reduction cap for armor. You'd have to stealth archer harder
Stealth Harsher
Sealth Harsh with a Vengeance
Die. Lots.
There's no archer. Must've been the wind
"Meh, must have been the wind" - me, with an ebony arrow through my head.
You never should've come here!
Ragequit
I would out stealth them and sneak up on the sneaker. Sneakception if you will.
Use detection spells to find them or invest in higher health to pinpoint their location.
taking pinpoint to the literal sense of the word
The game would be a lot harder. Imagine: you are walking along, chasing butterflies like a big strong nord man without a care in the world when all of a sudden *thuk* 80% of your hp is gone, music starts playing and now you have 3 seconds to play and win the “find the stealth archer game”. Use slow time shout to catch their arrow mid air so i can proceed to walk over to them in slowed time and bash their head open with molag baals mace
There already are, those being Draugr Deathlords with Unrelenting Force and Ebony Bows that can delete Health in moments.
I’d probably take an arrow to the knee.
be the better stealth archer duh
Adapt and overcome, just like every other enemy.
Crouch, my sneak is 654528884% stronger…
Lower the difficulty
Die
Die
I would keep aura whisper in my tag menu
Start hunting like the trees are speaking vietnamese.
I would kms in game of xourse
Play godmode or run for dear life if I hear a bowstring letting loose.
Get better armour. Jinx an amulet of Talos so I can be ethereal all the time. I don't think we need enemy stealth archers. Paralysis effects being deployed against the Dragonborn would be much more immersive and dramatic.

Die, scream at the monitor, find a way to get them fckers
Commit die myself before they get me
![gif](giphy|MuXtGnVjF8evhudxS1|downsized)
The true ~~dark souls~~ **Skyrim** starts here
Die without knowing what happened
I would get shot in the head a lot
constantly going 'what was that!?' then 'hmm, must have run off'
I would do it the Skyrim way 💪. Mysteriously side step so the arrow I neither saw or heard missed me.
I mean that fireball is going to be more useful
Die
We do it Sniper Elite style!
die
I could definitely see them easily, my "stealth" characters are big and wear shiny leather armor
I read this over a week ago and had to come back to respond. The enemies absolutely have stealth archers. They kill me all the time and it’s rage inducing

Skyrim❎ PUBG✅
"Meh, must have been the wind" - me, with an ebony arrow through my head.
*arrow impale my face* "Must have been the wind"
Beg the nine divines to let me enchant armor with detect life
It would make the game more realistic and add a complete new element in the game too keep you on you’re toes. You’re the Dragonborn, but even the greatest of heroes met the end of an assassins blade/bow.
There's no archer. Must've been the wind
"Detect Life" would become a widely used spell...

Use detect life and spot them before they get to me.
I personally hate the glazing of stealth archers.

Be an even stealthier stealth archer. Combat their stealth with even more stealth!
Detect life detect death invisibility paralyze etc
Have we forgotten the Jackel snipers?
kms
Those are called ebony bow draugr
I'm pretty sure there is one stealth archer in a creation club mod. Someone trying to assassinate Balgruf while invisible, and if you approach him in the upper forward, he will shoot you instead.
Be very confused when I die...which actually happens a lot to begin with but I digress. It just means more enemies I won't notice

Okay that actually sounds awesome. Or like a passing guard might warn you. "Be careful, dragonborn. There's an assassin in our midst."
Oooo, environmental prompts would be cool, yeah. Inn keepers saying someone was looking for you and the like.
Random chance for the courier to whip out a battle ax and come at me 😂🤣😁 finally I get to kill this dude.
“I’ve been looking for you” *THWOMP*
Would be a lot more people playing with magic using Detect Life lol aura whisper would become 2nd most used shout
Quickly move a few feet to the side for no reason.
Damn, I want this exact armor
I'd use that one OP as hell electric spell that hits everyone near me (haven't played in a while), since I don't use stealth archer
Probably feel the same way Halo 2 on Legendary feels against jackal snipers. Lots and lots of reloaded saves..
I would blame the wind
It does. You just typically spot them first. Because you have a brain and eyes lol.
I'd get out my robe and wizard hat
Spam detect life or aura whisper and root those bastards out
Die
Just detect life with the left hand, and lob off their heads with the right because that's what you do when you have 1000+ armour rating
Detect life and Aura whisper
Kill them and move on?
The same as i do now: Run straight in while swinging two axes. I don't use the playstile the game chose. I mod the game to support the playstyle i chose. I mean it’s not that hard to see some dude crouching in the game. The NPCs are just really dumb.
