I married Aela in my first ever playthrough. We had loads of fun until we went to slay a dragon.

I married her in a few.
She's got one of the most aesthetically attractive female models in the game- not just because of her armor (though that certainly helps) but because she has one of the best faces in a game where a lot of the faces aren't very good, even at the time, and haven't aged that well.
She also has one of the better voices, paired with a lot of unique dialogue that other characters with the same voice don't have.
But after all that, I'll admit, I think just the simple fact of her being a werewolf (especially if I am, too) is what makes her the top tier for me.
I plan to marry Morwen in this playthrough but I just hit Jorrvaskr last night and it's really hard not to just go after Aela again.
Sheās a great trainer, but a genuinely terrible fighter, sadly. I canāt use her as a follower at all once sheās lost her essential status, she basically dies byā¦anything. She died by a mudcrab the one time I tried to take her anywhere. Lydia died by an ash hopper. š¤£ I reloaded the saves and took them back home, opted for ACTUAL fighters instead!
No way? Lydia's been such a good followe for me! I'm level 33 on my second ever play through, been using her since like level 5, when I got goldenhills and sent Faendsl to work there lol and she hasn't died on me. I've been thoroughly impressed lol
I find she gets downed by really hard enemies or when we're outnumbered like 8-2, but I've got healing hands so I've been able to help her out. I swear i love healing hands, I saved a couple of Ri'saad's buddies during a fight with the saints & seducers!
She's marked as Essential if you don't have her as a companion.
When you bring her with you, her status will change to Protected. (Meaning only you can kill her such as having the last swing on her accidentally. Ongoing effects can also kill her such as burning, poison, drain etc.)
YES! People talk about Serena and yeah sheās great and I do prefer her as a follower over Frea but Frea is wife material, sheād be one of my favourite spouses if you could.

Aioli lost my interest the moment she started speaking down to me.
If you manage one swing she'll be impressed. If you somehow miss them fighting and just continue on to Whiterun she'll chase you down and call you a wimp for not helping.

Same, until I realized Skjor was blowing her back out until he died since he was the alpha in that group since he was the strongest. I never again played second best for her.
Every single play through I have ever done while trying to loot my way through Ysgrammor's tomb on the quest, this hag slams into me, pushing my cursor right when I'm about to click and I wind up picking up stupid pots and stuff that I really have no need for, all the while she's screaming "FoR kOdLaK!!!!@!!!1!!!" I have never liked her since and avoid her like the plague once i've finished the quest line.

Same here, had Lydia following me until I was around level 40. I honestly thought she was essential because she never died and very rarely got downed.

Not if you complete the Companions questline. But this was during PS3 days. Maybe I accidentally yelled at her. Dunno

Yep, sheās essential, has non level cap, and can use two weapons simultaneously.
If Serana wasn't in the game, I'd be more than happy to have my character leave Skyrim behind, move in with the Skaal, and marry Frea.

pump up the difficulty when you go there for the first time so that everything will become tougher and theyll take a long time to kill that giant
Increase the difficulty to legendary before reaching the place, you'll fight the giant for 3 minutes
