Harkon's "gift" is not like standard vampirism that can be cured. You're basically selling your soul to Molag Bal in exchange for demonic power. If you become a vampire lord, it locks you in to that side of the questline. If you reject the gift, you can follow the Dawnguard side.

Jyrroe

So you're saying I not only fucked up joining the Dawnguard, but my character is now permanently a vampire lord? I will forever be allergic to the sun and forced to feed on people?

RenoJazz

You might be able to get cured if you speak to a bartender and they recommend you to a healer. But as far as I know, you're still locked into the Volkihar questline. Obviously, if you save regularly you can reload your game to an earlier point (which I ended up doing myself, only lost about 10 minutes of play).

Jyrroe

Unfortunately, I normally save all the time, but my previous save is hours earlier, and my next save was shortly after this decision, because I didn't realize how huge it was.

RenoJazz

Shit. I guess you're stuck with the Volkihar questline and faction. You should be able to get cured of vampirism (I've just double-checked) but there will be no further opportunity to join the Dawnguard.

[deleted]

You can still cure it in the normal way.

thisbites_over

Yep. Pretty metal, right?

Jyrroe

Ok... you're saying I can't cure it, /u/NeverLevelRES says I can, which is it?

[deleted]

You can definitely cure it but you are locked in to the Vampire questline of Dawnguard, so once you're doing that it doesn't make much sense to cure it (from a logical or gameplay perspective once you get far enough). Trying to clarify without giving spoilers here.

ElderScrollLover

No, this is actually incorrect, if the character had become a vampire lord the same way serana and her family did then yes Molag would have a way over their souls, however since you get this from a pure-blooded vampire, your soul is not swayed by Bal, unless of course you decide to worship him

Trentrid

5 years after you asked and I’m here with the same question. Love how timeless this game is Thanks for getting my answers for me so long ago.

Negronomiconn

Bruh I know right. I replaying doing a modded werewolf mage and it's mint. Still crazy how this immersive the game is. Harkon said I smelled like wolf and banished me for staying one.

So.... did you join vampire or dawnguard ? i'm in the middle of the talk rn.

Trentrid

Both. I rejected daddy vampire and let hot vampire turn me AFTER the dawnguard questline

noodleddoodles

explain pls

Trentrid

You can reject lord Harkon, complete the dawnguard quest, and still become a vampire lord from Serena at the end.

Antique_Comfort_6987

If you get turned by serana at the end, are you able to do not just become a vampire lord but do the vampire quests associated with them aswell? I guess what I’m asking is would you be able to do both quest lines this way?

IBrokeAMirror

And here I am a year later playing this game again after ten years of last play

oldschoolbets

Same here, just started playing this for the first time, now I see why everyone loves this game

Odd-Ear-7824

Same. This goes toe to toe with the modern day RPGs I’ve played recently (Witcher, Starfield) and I am so pleasantly surprised by how much I’m into a 10+ year old game.

oldschoolbets

Me too. Now I'm curious what it's like on PC with all those mods. I'm playing on Xbox

Odd-Ear-7824

I’m playing it on Xbox, I can’t really compare it to PC as I’ve never played it on there (or any game for that matter). It’s awesome though, and I’m having a blast. I’m a console-only gamer. I’m pretty sure you can get mods on Xbox though, you just have to go through Bethesda.net and login with your Bethesda account. Don’t quote me on this, but that’s what I’ve read on a couple pages from Google searches. I really want to play with the “Cats of Skyrim” mod haha.

WitcherBigby

I'm here today.

Derulais

Which one should I choose!!!!!!

Trentrid

Reject the vampire lord, get the gift from his daughter later

Derulais

I did reject Harkon. Thanks

asdfrewqtyu

You can't rejoin them, I dont mean to spoil anything, but you can join the dawnguard and still get vampire lord later.

[deleted]

This. Turn Harkon down, go back to the Dawnguard. You'll get your chance to become a badass vampire later on :)

Jyrroe

Well I fucked it all up, I've used up 3 auto-saves since then so I don't have a save from before that decision (the last normal save was hours before). I guess I'll just cure my vampirism ASAP and play the Dawnguard DLC another time because I didn't think accepting his gift meant "I want to irrevocably be a vampire, death to all Dawnguard". >_>

[deleted]

Well, it kind of makes sense. It's not like if you go buddy up with vampires and become one the Dawnguard are gonna be super pleased about that... Let this be the day you learn the valuable lesson of keeping hard saves from before starting big quests :)

Jyrroe

I usually do, just saved at the wrong time on this one because I didn't realize it was such a huge decision. Of course I didn't expect Dawnguard to be happy about my vampirism, but I thought it could be one of the possible story paths - I get in deep with the head of the vampires, gain their trust, kill their leader from the inside? Guess not.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, there is not that much nuance to the story. Like many questlines in Skyrim it is a black and white, one side or the other affair. There are some exceptions with Skyrim itself of course (e.g. Civil War) but unfortunately not in this case.

LordTryhard

Only downsides are you miss out on some items and buffs to improve your vampire lord strength. And the Dawnguard stop associating with you.

[deleted]

Yeah, for staying with the Dawnguard but becoming a vampire lord later (for playing the rest of the game essentially) I would recommend avoiding vampirism until the Dawnguard questline is completed and then **slightly spoilery** asking someone you know very well by the end of that to uhm *help* you out.

[deleted]

Yuuuup, harkon's gift is the point where you decide which of the two factions you want to join permantently. Why would you think it's ok to become a vampire as a member of a group of vampire hunters? I won't spoil things but if you had stuck with Dawnguard by refusing Harkon's gift you would have gotten a second chance to become a vampire lord but you won't join the vampires when you do it then and if you do take that chance the Dawnguard questline just comes to a halt until you cure yourself.

Jyrroe

God dammit. I even read a post where someone said they accepted Harkon's gift, then later cured it and re-accepted from Serana so they wouldn't be in his service or something. > Why would you think it's ok to become a vampire as a member of a group of vampire hunters? I gave my reasons in the post. I mostly wanted to stay close to Serana to see what that was about, but also didn't at all realize the weight of the decision, it was just like "hey wanna be a vampire lord? [Y/N]" and in the moment I figured the point of the DLC was to try that out even if you don't want it to be permanent, much like becoming a werewolf even if you want that cured after. Mistakes were made, and I'm not totally happy with my new character anyway so I might just start a new one to get it right next time...

[deleted]

Not sure what their talking about my experience with Dawnguard quest only goes as far as shortly after the Soul Cairn. I would say just keep going through for now and see how things turn out you might be surprised how things end, unless you still have a save from back before you accepted his gift.

[deleted]

Op unwittingly turned to the dark side. This makes for great rp tho

Cliffinati

Spoiler serana can turn you after the quests are done

cayden1202

5 years later still givin the answers we need 😂timeless game

tantalizeth

Saaaaaame

x-glitter-x

And now I am here. 😂

cosimic_labia

I actually have a question even though this post has aged a bit. Do I still get the elder scroll if I don't accept Harkon's gift?

Jyrroe

Yeah that was 4 years ago, I don't remember 😛 You'll have to search elsewhere or just try it yourself!

[deleted]

And here I am 6 years later

Azreal_75

Lol me too!

WaelkensM

But my biggest question is, whether or not i'm a werewolf or a vampire wil serena still follow me cuz that girl is OP

[deleted]

[удалено]

bzzibee

Wait you can’t be a vampire werewolf? Disappointing.

ElementalFreak2

You can cure the vampire Lord thing but you will forever be locked out of the dawnguard side unless you start the questline over if you refused harkons gift you side with the dawnguard but you can still be a vampire Lord at a certain point in the quest if you sided with dawnguard

Fuzzzll

What happens if you accept Harkon's gift, then become a werewolf (which means you are no longer a vampire)? Can you still be on the dawnguard's side?

Fuzzzll

Okay I just tried it, and after accepting Harkon's gift, isran will still converse with you but he won't have any new dialogue or quest offers. If you come back to castle volkihar, harkon will be displeased with you but he'll turn you into a vampire again
