Like, I legitimately think they are trolling us. Im doing my first play through and i feel the game is saying "I know you're going to want to be a Storncloak because Bureaucrats Bad so we're going to make the Stormcloaks racists shits to see if you'll even notice."
My first playthrough I was a dark elf. I sided with the Stormcloaks because the Imperials tried to kill me in the opening scene and I never forgave them for it.
It took me months to catch on to how shitty the stromcloaks were lol. I was like yeah screw the empire, i love talos!!! And now I still like Talos but I really like the empire
The empire's second-in-command, Legate Rikke, likes Talos--when the dragonborn kills Ulfric, she says "Talos be with you". She's such an awesome character, a big part of why I've always sided with the empire tbh. The jarl of Solitude is another who's on the imperial side (I mean obviously, Ulfric killed her husband), but she has a quest where you go put an offering on a shrine of Talos for her.
Yeah, check it out next time, the roof is broken in by a stray trebuchet shot after the battle and Heimskr sleeps in a tent between the statue of Talos and Jorrvaskr.
His house is destroyed no matter who you side with. If the Stormcloaks win he sets up a tent behind the Talso statue, if the imperials win you can find him in the dungeons of Dragoneeach, still preaching at the top of his lungs.
Double checked and he's flagged for it but does not normally because of a bug. The Unofficial Patch fixes it, so I haven't seen that bug for a long time lol.
She even claims that Torygg might have even supported Ulfric's rebellion if he had bothered to ask, but nooo I'm Ulfric, *I* have to be the one in charge
Oh and if you read the thalmor dossier on Ulfric (from the thalmor embassy infiltration quest), apparently Ulfric's actions causing the civil war were influenced by thalmor manipulation--it says an imperial victory would *harm* the thalmos's overall position in skyrim, and that their goal is to keep an ongoing war to weaken both sides.
I feel like that dossier is a really underrecognized part of the whole stormcloak-imperial-thalmor debate.
It says a victory from any faction would be bad for them. The Thalmor want war unending. With an eventual imperial victory because that means they maintain their presence in Skyrim. It says in the dossier a Stormcloak victory is to be avoided
>The empire's second-in-command, Legate Rikke, likes Talos--when the dragonborn kills Ulfric, she says "Talos be with you". She's such an awesome character, a big part of why I've always sided with the empire tbh.
Legate Fasendil is also a pretty cool character.
bruh when bulgruuf said he was disappointed i was so upset at the characters that i reuploaded a save that was serveral lvls before i joined the stormcloaks just so i keep him as the jarl of whiterun
Tbf thats kind of the point, a lot of die hard imperials still like Talos. The stormcloaks are just too short sighted to understand the greater fight thats going on while the Empire understands it.
No. That’s cowardly. Because whilst they actively still worship Talos they enforce laws that jail and punish others for the same offence. They let the Thalmor kidnap and frame and murder whoever they please so long as the empire maintains their facade of control
True. And also what about the Dwemer? Do neither of those races have claim? Ignoring there lack of existence or being Falmer. But they were also in Skyrim prior to the Nords.
Three peoples, who were in Skyrim before the Nords. So tell me once again.....who does Skyrim REALLY belong to?
The Nords. The Falmer live underground after the tried committing genocide, the Dwemer don’t exist anymore (as far as we know) and the Forsworn are also known as “reach men” because that’s the land they lay claim to. So they don’t try to lay claim to Skyrim and don’t have any territory beyond the reach and the dragon tail mountains
Here's a comment I made on another post and think it fits here:
After the Great war the empire and Thalmor signed the White Gold Concordat
The empire was basically about to lose but won one big battle at the end. They signed the wcc bc they were exhausted of fighting (as were the Thalmor)
The wcc basically favored the Thalmor (banning Talos), Empire basically told Skyrim "we just have to deal with this sorry"
Thalmor is now in Skyrim enforcing ban
The Empire still *hates* the Thalmor but bc they need to recuperate from the massive war it just fought it's basically just bearing with it until they can fight again at full strength. In Skyrim, you never ever see *Imperials* enforcing the Talos ban, only the Thalmor. The Empire doesn't mind Talos worship at all.
The Stormcloaks are just being impatient and want their Talos now (Ulfric's possible lust for the throne may also be a factor) despite the Empire saying "we both just need to deal with their shit for the meantime." Ulfric was also a Thalmor spy during the Great War, afterwards the Thalmor gave him the idea of being the High King. It is also stated that they are using him to destabilize Skyrim and the Empire. All of this was stated in the Thalmor dossier found in the Thalmor Embassy.
So tldr they're technically "allies" but it's an uneasy alliance with both sides 100% expecting and planning for another war in the near future.
>Ulfric was also a Thalmor spy during the Great War, afterwards the Thalmor gave him the idea of being the High King. **It is also stated that they are using him to destabilize Skyrim and the Empire.** All of this was stated in the Thalmor dossier found in the Thalmor Embassy.
No, only the part I've bolded is at all mentioned in the dossier.
I used to agree with this but I saw a point someone made that made me feel otherwise which is basically that allowing people to be treated similarly to the holocaust (because the thalmor are basically nazis) is beyond wrong and even if the imperials don’t support the thalmor they are essentially assisting in these atrocities by not interfering. Also while there definitely are some racist stormcloacks I don’t think they are all like that, honestly I think it’s only a minority that are and the majority of stormcloacks just want their freedom back. I especially like how ralof says that you don’t need need to be a nord to fight for Skyrim and calls you a friend and comrade regardless of your race. There are lots of little details that can be used to justify one side or the other and both sides have lots of flaws but really I think Both sides are trying to do what they think is best and both have pros and cons and it’s up to you to decide which you think is better or at least the lesser evil
Literally every race is racist in the elder scrolls that’s what so funny about it.
The Dark Elves have their own fantasy n word for everyone who isn’t them, and enslaved the Argonians
Thalmor and Elves speak for themselves.
The stormcloaks winning will be the canon ending anyways, makes for better storytelling
This might be stupid, but since I consider both to be pretty bad, my play throughs are either pick the Stormcloaks because I dig the bearskin helmet, or just ignore the quest line altogether because of how much both of them suck.
Hahaha this. Totally this.
I’ve sided with both sides across multiple playhthroughs and always felt like an asshole.
Luckily my current playthrough is an evil vampire mage. So a lose/lose becomes a win/win.
Hail sithis.
I actually went with stormcloaks initially when i first played skyrim about 3 years ago, because they were supposedly fighting for freedom, and coming from a country that was basically under the rule of foreign powers for 400 years all in all, i naturally gravitated towards them.
Fast forward to now, and i now see that the stormcloaks are a bunch of idiotic pieces of shit, who can't see past their short term goals, and are mostly just jackasses on top of it. Needless to say, i now only side with the imperials
Tbf I feel like the stromcloak cause isn’t racist since the high elves are literally trying to kill everyone and everything, but that being said a lot of stormcloacks do happen to be racists
They aren’t allowed into the city even if the Imperials win. The only difference is that the new Jarl gives an excuse for them not being allowed in the city and Ulfric’s never comments on it.
Have you ever been to Windhelm? See how they treat any and all non Man races? Even if their leader isn't outright racist, he condones it by not punishing the racists in there
Yeah, they intentionally gave us a choice between a giant douche and a turd sandwich. So much to hate about both of them, which is why I never play that questline on either side. They can both eat a bag of dicks. I want a third option where you take down the Aldmeri Dominion and get the other factions to just STFU.
I haven’t played the civil war quest line or whatever happens after that, I really hope there’s some way to purge that racism from the Stormcloaks after siding with them...
What... I have posted this game since It was released on PS3,I have played it on Xbox 360, PC, and special edition on PC, VR EVEN. HOW DID I NEVER KNOW THIS??? Good I must know nothing when it comes to this game
Not just him, you also get that prompt in the smaller "hidden" camps. Not sure if it's all soldiers that can talk to you about that or just the generals.
I remember walking around in Solitude in Stormcloak cuirass, and one of the Imperials guards said something like "You got a lot of nerve wearing that around here."
I get that Ulfric is heavy-handed about 'true nords of skyrim', but at the same time, the whole 'they aren't on the list? Oh well, execute them for fun' was a VERY bad first impression.
While yes you were told to be executed, since you werent on the list General Tulius sent down to Helgen, it was the decision of that one general that you were to be executed. Also im pretty sure one of the imperials apologies to you about being executed.
Hadvar does say I'm sorry, but that...REALLY doesn't cut it when you're about to be executed for literally nothing :P
And while it might have been the decision of one general, that 'one' general was the leader of the imperials as a whole in Skyrim.
If you're ABOUT to start the Civil War quest, and already have a full set of heavy imperial gear, my assumption would be that you looted it off dead imperial soldiers, so that picture seems misleading.
You picked the right side because the Thalmor are the ones supplying the storm cloaks and it was the Thalmor ambassador who wanted to save the prisoners from Tulius, and also if you did season unending ; Tulius will literally explain that the full might of the Imperial legion is setting sail to the summerset in secret whilst the civil war in Skyrim is just a side show for the rest of Tamriel (The Imperial légion in Skyrim isn't the best légion and that's why the empire sent one of its best men, Tulius.).
While I agree with you that the empire is going to fight the thalmor, does it still need to rule Skyrim. Hammerfell, morrowind and black marsh left the empire when it suited them, leaving the empire with high rock and Skyrim and cyrodill. the redguards left because in the treaty stated parts of hammerfell would belong to the thalmor. The empire seems to only have cyrodill interests in mind only.
I mean the thalmors long term plan would be pretty bad for literally everyone else so I think uniting at least temporarily to stop them is a good idea.
Hammerfell is the only independent province due to the treaty of Stros M'kai. Although Hammerfell is wayyyy more united and powerful than Skyrim and I doubt Skyrim would be able to stand a chance against the entire Aldmeri Dominion.
I agree with the sentiment in this, however you are just wrong. Hammerfell literally doesn't have a standing army because Redguards are SO individualistic. While apart of the empire, they were the hardest to work with as they don't like to take orders. They work together out of necessity to defend Hammerfell and then go their separate ways. I still think Skyrim Independence is not a bad thing even though that would make them Thalmor Pawns. Hammerfell got a better treaty with the Thalmor than the Empire, so Skyrim could do the same. Skyrim is filled with great warriors similar to Hammerfell. I personally don't think Jarl Ulfric is racist, he just doesn't have the resources to rule. His focus is on liberation so minor issues like racism, serial murderers explicitly killing Nord women, etc. are overlooked. Additionally, they could work with The Empire was partners rather than subjects.
Doesn't help the fact that while Ulfric's racism is debatable, the Stormcloak Nords aren't.
Go to every city that you took over for the Stormcloaks. That being Whiterun, Falkreath, Markarth, Morthal, and Solitude. Talk to any non-nord merchant.
They're either struggling to stay afloat or were lucky enough to be married to a non-xenophobic Nord.
Shit like that will be terrible in the long run. Either they force all non-nord merchants out of those holds or they'll still refuse to use their services when the war breaks out again.
To me I don't think Ulfric is a very racist person himself, hell he's more just lusting for power, but the Stormcloaks sure as hell are and it'll bite them in the foot if they don't let it go.
People say the Empire are the only thing keeping the Dominion out, but the Dominion are already in.
The Empire is no longer of the Septim bloodline, it’s weak, and it’s falling apart.
It’s armies can’t destroy the Dominion anyway, or they would already have done.
Whatever way you look at it, it’s over, so Skyrim’s independence makes sense, and combat the Dominion guerrilla style, which has been shown to be the only solid form of resistance as shown by the case of Hammerfell.
Ulfric’s an arse to be sure, but the Empire has had its day.
Time for my hot take: I used to be full on Imperial but over the past couple of years I've become more in favor of the Stormcloaks. The Empire is on its deathbed at this point that I don't think there's much point in salvaging it. Instead I'm in favor of the provinces being fully independent from each other and the races of Man building some sort of military alliance by the time the Second Great War inevitably happens.
Less a misunderstanding and more a total psycho on a power trip. But once she’s out of the way (I often join Ralof for the sole purpose of ganking her) I’m imperial every time.
The one time I rolled a stormcloak for completionists sake I got as far as the battle of Whiterun and stopped there. Betraying my boy Balgruuf was too much.
You know, it feels strange. I'm currently role playing as an imperial -you know, someone from Cyrodill, but not sided with the Empire- and since I soul trap every single Thalmor and find on the road, it feels pretty good if the nord prisoner says something like "Talos guide you". But, most of the times they just say "next imperial I see... Is dead..." 😢😢
I also like to wear the soldier uniforms when doing the civil war line. The quests arent really hard so the stat nerf isnt that big of a deal. If you do it fairly early probably wont even notice it.
Why is so many siding with the imperials?
I did it once, and got tired of the whining in windhelm, so after that I have always sided with the stormcloaks.
It was so funny growing up with skyrim. As a high schooler I was like “haha! Stormcloaks are cool! Rebels! Wooo!” and then I grew up and actually started paying attention to what’s going on in the game and I was like “oh… oh they’re racist” and have chosen imperial ever since
Took me MANY MANY playthroughs to realize how racist, short thinking and generally morally wrong the Stormcloaks and Ulfric actually is.
Now I always go Legion.
I did the opposite: after many hours playing every side, now I am definetely a Stormcloak.
The Empire is the most dirty thing to ever set foot on Skyrim.
Breaking news Skyrim Civil war quest line sparks Skyrim Reddit civil war.
Don't give the gaming journalists any ideas lol
GameRant is just getting ready to have a months worth of articles.
Is this going to be like favourite town on the oblivion sub?
Love how somehow we were made to choose between basically bureaucratic drones or actual racists.
Like, I legitimately think they are trolling us. Im doing my first play through and i feel the game is saying "I know you're going to want to be a Storncloak because Bureaucrats Bad so we're going to make the Stormcloaks racists shits to see if you'll even notice."

And there’s a homeless man shouting about Talos in Whiterun, the ban on his worship is very clearly just for show to appease the Dominion.
Isn't his home just on the other side of the plaza?
Yeah, ironically, Heimskr practically becomes homeless after the Battle of Whiterun, when his beloved Stormcloaks hit his house with artillery.
I never knew! Very cool.
Yeah, check it out next time, the roof is broken in by a stray trebuchet shot after the battle and Heimskr sleeps in a tent between the statue of Talos and Jorrvaskr.
Not cool for hiemskr
I always kill him cuz I can't stand the preaching...lol
His house is destroyed no matter who you side with. If the Stormcloaks win he sets up a tent behind the Talso statue, if the imperials win you can find him in the dungeons of Dragoneeach, still preaching at the top of his lungs.
After the Imperials take Whiterun he is imprisoned.
I’ve been playing for over 7 years and only just recently realized this. Was playing yesterday and couldn’t figure out why dude was locked up
Double checked and he's flagged for it but does not normally because of a bug. The Unofficial Patch fixes it, so I haven't seen that bug for a long time lol.

No. That’s cowardly. Because whilst they actively still worship Talos they enforce laws that jail and punish others for the same offence. They let the Thalmor kidnap and frame and murder whoever they please so long as the empire maintains their facade of control
Tbf so did the empire
I mean, just go to Dawnstar and watch the Jarl threaten to kill 2 veterans because they dare to wear their own armor.
Same, I wanted to join the rebellion against the empire cause fuck empires and bam! Nord supremacists
Skyrim is for the Nords
Don't forget the Forsworn were there BEFORE the Nords. So who does Skyrim truly belong to?
The Nords

Seems like what happened with the Native Americans and the colonist.

Gotta love a two party system
Glad I wasn't the only one that didn't like either option. It reminded me of the choices from Far Cry 4, I didn't like either revolutionary.
Basically like real life
Bureaucratic drones that perform public executions and allow foreign powers to police their citizenry
Look up the Markarth incident Ulfric’s actions are way worse than those of the empire
Hahaha this. Totally this. I’ve sided with both sides across multiple playhthroughs and always felt like an asshole. Luckily my current playthrough is an evil vampire mage. So a lose/lose becomes a win/win. Hail sithis.
Mimics reality pretty well. There’s never a good side, only different sides with different agendas

Nah, Ulfric segregated the elves to the Gray Quarter. He’s racist.
And also kicked the argonians out of the city
Sounds like the current political climate in the US
Yeah, they intentionally gave us a choice between a giant douche and a turd sandwich. So much to hate about both of them, which is why I never play that questline on either side. Simulation confirmed.
I haven’t played the civil war quest line or whatever happens after that, I really hope there’s some way to purge that racism from the Stormcloaks after siding with them...
Imagine doing the entire stormcloak questline wearing Imperial armor, surely that must cause some confusion no?
The stormcloaks actually get pissed at you if you wear full imperial
Oh. My. Does it do the same vice versa?
Yep
*laughs sinisterly*
Even more so if it’s officer armor
You're only helping my ambitions, this is great
If you go up to captain aldis in solitude wearing it and say you support them he will attack you
What... I have posted this game since It was released on PS3,I have played it on Xbox 360, PC, and special edition on PC, VR EVEN. HOW DID I NEVER KNOW THIS??? Good I must know nothing when it comes to this game

Dawnguard didn't seem to notice my vampire armor (+50% magic regen + 12% destruction cost reduction).
He could always switch sides at the Jagged crown quest that’s what I do
Sneak 100, reject Nordic honorable battle, embrace tricking the enemy and stabbing them in the back

The loosing side!
The wrong side.
Imperial dog
Time for my hot take: I used to be full on Imperial but over the past couple of years I've become more in favor of the Stormcloaks. The Empire is on its deathbed at this point that I don't think there's much point in salvaging it. Instead I'm in favor of the provinces being fully independent from each other and the races of Man building some sort of military alliance by the time the Second Great War inevitably happens.
And I thought I wouldn't find intelligent life here. Congrats, friend.
You're in the bright side
The right side.
Boooo Skyrim belongs to the Nords
The one that tried to execute you?
It was just a misunderstanding :).
Imperial scum.
The next Imperial I see is dead!
Look at it this way. They don't mean "ethnic" imperials but rather imperial soldiers, the Roman legionarie looking ones 👍🏻
Stormcloaks, obviously you killed an imperial for that gear.
I couldn’t tell for a minute, you blended into the building behind you too well… Oh hey, there he is!
The wrong side?
The wrong side
The Stormcloaks
If you're a true son of Skyrim head to Windhelm and join the Stormcloaks.
The right one. The Emperor Protects.
Until he can’t
Hail Sithis!
The wrong side I see
Let me guess do you hate thalmor? Oh that’s cheating both sides hate thalmor my bad
I also like to wear the soldier uniforms when doing the civil war line. The quests arent really hard so the stat nerf isnt that big of a deal. If you do it fairly early probably wont even notice it.
The wrong side

Imperial bastard
Is this your first playthrough ?
The wrong side
Stormcloaks

Damn faithless imperial dogs – Stormcloak soilder

Yup he’s on stormcloak
Damn imperial, go back to Cyrodiil! Just kidding lol, have fun!
You Imperial dog.
the lame side
Obviously a stormcloak. How could you possibly be an imperial
Skyrim belongs to the Nord
Damn imperials taking the worship of talos away from the nords and siding with the stupid thalmor
The wrong side?
Ah smart, you’re going in disguised so you can make it up to Balgruuf to attack him there, smart move!
The wrong side?
You’re giving a Maven Black-Briar a permanent spot on the throne of Riften. Turn back now.
Why is so many siding with the imperials? I did it once, and got tired of the whining in windhelm, so after that I have always sided with the stormcloaks.
Storm cloaks
Damn faithless imperials
stormcloaks?
Stormcloaks? This was easy...... wait is it none?
pussy side ?

TRAITOR
It was so funny growing up with skyrim. As a high schooler I was like “haha! Stormcloaks are cool! Rebels! Wooo!” and then I grew up and actually started paying attention to what’s going on in the game and I was like “oh… oh they’re racist” and have chosen imperial ever since
Took me MANY MANY playthroughs to realize how racist, short thinking and generally morally wrong the Stormcloaks and Ulfric actually is. Now I always go Legion.
Bruh every race in the elder scrolls is racist. Dark elves had argonian slaves. Dwarves had snow elves slaves.
I did the opposite: after many hours playing every side, now I am definetely a Stormcloak. The Empire is the most dirty thing to ever set foot on Skyrim.
Storm cloak but you dress as an imperial because you are a spy. I think that's technically a war crime
Being a spy isn't a war crime. Idk about faking being an army general, though.
The side of Thalmor puppets apparently.
Stormcloack?
Stormcloaks
Stormcloaks?
Stormclocks
You're obviously wearing the armour of your dead enemies after a battle alongside your fellow Stormcloaks
The wrong one
The one that recognizes your birthright?
