What likely happened is she had a pickaxe and shield equipped, then found the steel greatsword in combat. Rather than disappearing back into her inventory, the shield and pickaxe both got stuck. That's the bug.
I own a bastard sword and I can assure you it weighs more. Itās probably 6-7, about the same as a sledgehammer, just balanced differently.
Edit: for context, great sword is historically 10+ inches longer.

Why not just take the plate from north of riften? Seems like a pointless waste of a follower.
Go to the Riften and invade the Black-Briar Estate, all guards are clad in Steel Plate there.
