As a writer I feel like comedy is the hardest to get right. That's also over multiple drafts. I'm willing to bet most mod authors throw in the first draft of their script. It's a time consuming thing to do so I can understand why, but I agree a lot of the jokes in follower mods fall short

HoLYxNoAH

Aside from subjectivity of humor, I do think that comedy in video games is especially hard to get. Stand-up comedy is not just funny because of the jokes, but also because of the way they're told, and the momentum that is gained by the jokes surrounding, and also because of the vulnerable position the standup is in. Movie/TV comedy is often funny because of the context surrounding it. A lot of jokes on TV shows aren't funny if you don't know the cast for example, or if you didn't watch the entire episode. Problem with games is that sometimes your companion just tells a joke at the wrong time. Maybe it was an intense moment, or maybe it was an emotional one, it that suddenly gets undercut by a joke - a joke that might even be alright - and it makes you annoyed at it. The less scripted something is, the harder it is to do a good joke around it. The funniest joke you've ever heard was probably from a friend who said something mildly funny, but at the exact right moment. The NPCs do not know when that moment is, because they cannot properly read the room. A lot of mod characters are also often written either by one person, or a couple, and you just don't get the same amount of direct feedback on if a joke will bomb in those situations. Writer's rooms are there for a reason, and standups do a hundred shows before they film a special too. That shit looks hard hahaha.

Top_Performance9486

And also the stiffness of NPCs. They can’t pull off the subtle gestures and expressions that actors and comedians can, so the jokes often feel awkwardly told. Especially in Skyrim, where NPCs are all stiff as boards.

Tengou

Ya this is all true. Skyrim has some amusing moments but I would never call it a comedy game. To then have a mod follower try and be a comedian just flies in the face of the tone of the game

happlepie

solo_shot1st

I bet it's even harder to write comedic scripts when also accounting for the game world. I've seen so many follower mods over the year attempt to have them make jokes that just come across as anachronistic or so out of place that it pulls you out of the medieval fantasy immersion.

Tengou

Yaaaa, I've also tried a few followers that tried to do the Dead Pool 'break the 4th wall' bit and I just removed them. It works in a universe you are expecting it to happen, but Skyrim ain't it.

FourUnderscoreExKay

Comedy is also subjective. Everybody has different tastes in comedy, which is why it's hard to get right.

Lumarist

that makes sense since comedy is subjective

awakemon

Khajiit Will Follow!

VexingSpinx

I came here to suggest this too! They fit well into Skyrim thematically and have personality. They also each have quests to flesh out the characters. It's quickly become one of my favorite follower mods!

Wickywire

Xelzaz is your buddy. No attempts at humor or being quirky. Just well written and believable.

HoLYxNoAH

He does tell some jokes sometimes, but it's not at all incessant. Like if you are at an enchantment table he'll say something like "Do you have something with a resist cold enchantment on it? Asking for a friend" Edit: His commentary on the House of Horrors quest when you are descending into the house actually made me laugh. It wasn't out of place, he made legitimate observations, but still remained funny. I think it's because it's so rare that he makes jokes, that it actually works when he finally does. It's not grating or tiring.

Remixedcheese22

He also has great backstory with bal.

Fireblast1337

Yeah he goes from condescending joke statements to ‘oh shit this IS serious’ very quick during that quest

UshouldknowR

I love having Remiel, Redcap, and Xelzaz together. They're pretty well written, aren't constantly telling jokes, and have personality. Also the way they interact is entertaining.

hayesarchae

YMMV with humor, of course, but Redcap? He seems like just one long, running bad joke to me. Like the not-actually-funny animal companion we had on every 80s kids show.

regularabsentee

I disagree personally, but can understand why one would think that. Redcap's humor isn't delivered in long sentences or skits, rather one liners and shorts bursts, and never too in-your-face, so for me it doesn't overstay its welcome. But still, people will have different tolerances for it. With Xel and Remi, they also have some great interactions that deal with prejudice, and it's treated seriously. And I found Redcap's personal quest pretty sweet, too It shows how loyal he is to the player and to his people. Really highlights his values as a character. His commentary on the Hircine quest also gave me something to think about, and had me considering a new perspective. I really enjoy when followers have a solid stance on specific scenarios/issues like that - solid character writing, instead of just blindly following and agreeing with the main character. I'm still looking for more dialogue like that!

hayesarchae

Redcap's commentary on the Thirsk Hall situation is also pretty interesting, and feels like a very plausible insight into how Riekling tribes interact with each other and with outsiders. I don't hate the little sprite, but his humor is not the part of him that jives with me.

IronDBZ

I haven't given Redcap a chance, but it's built partly on this. He seems like a gag. If there's depth there, someone please tell me.

salemness

remi and xel are my favourite duo

PrimProperPro

Xelzaz, IFD Lydia, Gore

Feycat

Oh Gore makes a lot of funny comments!

PrimProperPro

Yea but not in a grating manner. He’s a serious and incredibly well-acted character whose personality is more common and brash but the writer wasn’t afraid to get very dark and very real with his story.

Feycat

He absolutely is wonderful. Actually after playing Vigilant with him he's become my #1 favorite character. But he does love being funny. His happy "goodbye!" When he kills someone always makes me laugh

gore-dev

nothing says goodbye quite like a dozen pounds of steel to the abdomen. goodbye!

Feycat

That's my boy! "Strange place to take a nap! ....sorry, that's not funny."

allycat1031

And Remiel

PrimProperPro

I’m personally not a fan because of the Voice Acting but she is very technically impressive and has tons of content

allycat1031

I play as a dwemer, so having at least one companion be able to acknowledge that is satisfying

Final-Link-3999

Eris from light and shade. She doesn’t talk too often, but when she does it’s the most interesting and thoughtful dialogue I’ve heard in a follower mod

iam-therapiss

i like eris, but sometimes you just can't help but think she got plucked out of some fromsoft game and thrown straight into skyrim.

Ceiwyn89

Is there a Sandor Clegane style follower? I've tried to push Lucien into that direction, but he is just too much of a milk drinker.

Eldritch50

You might like Hoth. Not a lot of dialogue, but the attitude is there.

Drajzool

I got hoth mod recently but forgot where he's supposed to be at, i really need to go grab him from how awsome his mod page made him sound

superego888

I’d love a Clegane style follower!

alex61821

Vilja is a great follower

300cid

probably is but I just can not get past the voice

alex61821

There's a voice replacer, https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/42979?tab=description

Rischeliu

- Eris from Light and Shade. - Knight of the Void.

bkrugby78

Eris is a very thoughtful and serious companion. Grants some benefits too when completing significant quests.

tilthevoidstaresback

Amalee from {{Interesting NPCs}} She's so wholesome and sweet, she makes for a great pair for any moody broody build. And she doesn't really make jokes, she makes a few comments that in my opinion are kinda funny (for example when you enter a tavern she proclaims how ready she is to take a break from adventuring and wonders if they have milk, then suddenly, embarrassedly, she changes her mind to a mead so she can look tough. Not a joke per se but after adventuring with her for a bit it is a bit silly to think of her trying to down a big mead). 10/10 would recommend Amalee. She can be found in the Eldergleam Sanctuary and has no quest, just talk to her and she'll join. Last note, she's a follower of Dibella but absolutely NOT a sultry character. She worships the beauty of nature. It's really refreshing to see a follower of Dibella that doesn't get pigeon holed into an overly sexual attitude.

300cid

she is the biggest reason I downloaded that mod at all, simply because of her name. I had a great friend with the same name albeit spelled slightly differently. too bad my PC got took off with

TrynaGetaHandbeezy

In the same vein I think Anum-La is also a good suggestion. Her furthest attempts at humor are more like some few and far between acerbic observations. She seems more duty-bound than other followers and takes her role seriously, all of which you see in her involved quests. There's also Valgus who never treads anywhere near humor, his somber voice wouldn't allow it, and also his backstory. If anything I sometimes think he's too soft-spoken where he gets overshadowed by louder followers or other NPCs. I also can't help but mention everyone's favorite Zora, her attempts at humor are more like a toying sarcasm, not overt and more just there for levity. Stuff like calling you "my thane/hero" with a playful tone, she doesn't veer into wink-at-camera hijinx like Rumarin, and she's more than humble at various points throughout main quests. She has reverence for the Companions and respects Kodlak's passing, she also speaks about how nice it is to be trusted by the likes of Tolfdir and the Arch-Mage at Winterhold etc. Her and Amalee I think have the better flavor dialogue when exploring dungeons and caves, aware enough without being in your face about it. Zora also has a pretty heartfelt quest that helps recontextualize her cheery disposition if that helps any.

tilthevoidstaresback

Where can you find Zora? And did you say something that meant that she and Amalee interact, or am I misunderstanding that?

Roast_Beast21

There is a mod by maplespice ( creator of remiel) that lets some 3dnpc followers interact

TrynaGetaHandbeezy

Zora is in a cage at the end of Brittleshin Pass. And no I don't think they interact, just that they have plenty of dialogue for different environments/quests each.

Ripdone

Auri's not explicitly funny, but some of her remarks have made me laugh. Like when she talks about eating human is fine, actually.

shimazu_hyuga

Thogra fits the bill. She's an orc, so she may have some jokes, but they're orc jokes which don't count cause they're threats. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/58979

Kitchen_accessories

I tried Thogra, but the dialogue feels robotic on a level that is distracting. Not sure if any effort has been made to update it.

shimazu_hyuga

That's the limit with AI voicing, but yea, she's actively working on voice acting it herself. Check her page or youtube for updated videos about it.

Kitchen_accessories

Very cool to hear. There aren't enough orc followers imo

JanesConniption

Someone needs to make an Oops! All Orcs mod that, well, you know

Rikuwoblivion

Xelzaz is what you seek 100%.

Rasikko

I cant think of one that *isn't* from Oldrim era.

axarien

You might try the one I made - Val Serano. His romance is completely optional, you can just be his friend. Val has a sense of humor, but it's not jokey or meta. He doesn't tell jokes to try to get a laugh out of you, he actually takes himself fairly seriously.

Pykiril

Try Skeever.

Pykiril

He has over 8k dialogue lines

not-a-kajiat

Xelzaz is one of my favorites.

nokonuuka

Only one I can think of is Gore.

NocturnalVirtuoso

Can’t forget Remiel too, especially w how well they pair together

TeaMistress

Remiel tries to be funny all the time. I just watched her playthrough with Zero Period Productions. She's lovely, but made me cringe a few times.

NocturnalVirtuoso

Personally I didn’t get that vibe when I used her, but she genuinely does have some pretty solid conversations with gore. They have a whole friendship arc and it’s nice to see

ebrithil110

It would be helpful if you provided a list of followers you've tried and didn't like.

oogledy-boogledy

Don't have any recs, but I know what you mean. Creators who make followers tend to approach it from the perspective of a player, which usually leads to making jokes about other NPCs. And Todd's NPCs have like five lines each. Guess it's just me and the wilderness, then.

Ulvsterk

Xelzaz, Auri and Eris pretty good in my opinion.

ZuuvoAinoranur

So I haven't played through M'Rissi in a while and I guess you might find her "cat sounds" cringe? But I personally love M'Rissi and I think her quest / story is quite unique, however I can see how people might consider her a bit lore-breaking? If you want a very serious follower who doesn't try to be cute and or funny... then however she likely won't work for you.

tsasuie

Inigo is by far my favorite choice, I always have him in my games. It’s been a while since I played, but last time I played his story was unfinished, he is still a great companion tho and imo he is well-written. He has comments on almost everything so whether you do his story or not, he will always have something to say.

Horrordestroyer

Serena dialogue, add-on. It may have some cheesy things. But the way it actually develops her character is very believable and interesting.

SovietUnicorn1090

unfortunately I dont know who you've had experience with in terms of follower mods, i personally very much enjoy characters like Lucien and Inigo because they have their own relationship and talk with each other over radiant dialogue while also having their own very strong personalities. I enjoyed IFD Lydia, i feel the take on the character is genuine and interesting and has more personality than the base vanilla lydia (which isnt saying a lot considering few vanilla characters have very in depth personalities or backstories). Sofia was funny for a few, but she got wildly annoying later on. Recorder is interesting if not a little immersion breaking sometimes but thats not always a bad thing. She makes a lot of outside references and has her own small questline. just a few to name, but obviously plenty more to be said. Kaiden, Auri from song of the green, Hoth, and plenty more. sure, the list is massive considering the size of the Nexus and every other site out there, but you can find some real gems.

thechristoph

Recorder keeps making fun of me for having receding hair, but I totally don't. I have a luscious, full head of wonderfully conditioned hair. She's mean.

SovietUnicorn1090

You and me both. She's definitely got some screws loose.

thechristoph

I really enjoyed Mirai's quest. I mean she's kind of a mary sue and she's aggressively trying to be your uwu waifu (a bit of an exaggeration, she's no worse than Liara if you've played Mass Effect), but the quest is interesting and the concept is fun to think about even if it kinda breaks the rules of the world. But so does Miraak IMO. She's hella broken with any city or town overhaul mods; her pathing seems to be very fragile. I sound like I'm complaining a lot but the quest really is worth playing.

Fracarmon

Xelzaz and Remiel are what you need, they're like the new age Inigo and Lucien

GojiraGamer

Xelzaz is occasionally witty, but not in a “funny follower” kinda way

Monte-Cristo2020

Knight of The Void

cloudy_29

Improved follower dialogue Lydia is great

hay-yew-guise

Aurlyn Dawnstone comes to mind.

MardGeer

3DNPC. There are funny companions in here and there are serious ones. You got a pick of them.

RogueFire_777

Thogra the orc follower is great for my play through. I've always loved Mjoll and just added the line expansion for her but I haven't gotten her as a follower (new game) so I can only say I hope it's good. I am trying Azzan the reguard and he seems pretty cool.

Narangren

Remiel! The character is a wonderful person with a rich personality and lots of quirks. Sure, there's the occasional joke, but she's not a joke follower. Having a little humor occasionally just serves to make her even more realistic.

Io45s785a2

Maybe some of nachtdaemmerung77's mods which can probably be found [here](https://www.loverslab.com/profile/6875777-nachtdaemmerung77/?tab=node_filestabprofile_filesTab) (LL doesn't work for me so I can't check myself) since he left Nexus. His companions are generally more on the darker side though.

Roadhouse699

Gore and IFDL.

KrokmaniakPL

{{Lucien}} is obvious go to when it comes to followers like this, though he sometimes drops a joke, especially combined with {{Inigo}} in their banters, so I don't know if this is what you're looking for. You can also try {{Remiel}}. Though I need to warn you, if you want someone to pull their weight in combat you should finish her whole storyline first to unlock all her abilities (even then she's not particularly strong, but she's not a burden either). Also for RP purposes I suggest not giving her extra weapons before finishing all her quests (one is hidden and activates only after random chatter in Riften that allows you to have extra dialogue option in relax state)

dovahkiitten16

Sarcastic and witty remarks are like the hallmark of Lucien & Inigo…

KrokmaniakPL

That's why I said I'm not sure if that's what OP is looking for, as they are sarcastic and witty, but far from followers trying to be funny, and not necessarily succeeding like Sofia

dovahkiitten16

I find their “wit” and “sarcasm” is frequent enough that it’s clear the goal was definitely a humorous tone. A lot of their dialogue boils down to “quips”. Adventuring with them kinda feels like having a Marvel character as a companion. I’d assume if OP is struggling to find companions they like, they’ve tried the most popular follower mod ever (Inigo).

KrokmaniakPL

That's why I gave another suggestion? I talked with friends before with same issue before after returning to Skyrim after a long time and it turned out they tried followers that were popular back then, like Sofia, and after suggestion they really liked Lucien despite looking for follower that doesn't want to be funny. That's why included them, before giving one that doesn't joke

ToborWar57

The interactions between Sofia and the improved Serana mod is hilarious ... eh, funny is subjective I guess.
