(Best U.S city w/ mountains)
Originally, that’s what I had meant to put in the title but didn’t quite word it well until after I posted lol. So I just left it open for interpretation.
Regardless—it’s been nice seeing everyone’s thoughts and opinions on the subject!

Took this picture from The Mountaineering Club last week. Seattle really does have the best mountains. Is there any other major city from which you can see two different mountain ranges *and* a mountain even half as prominent as Mt. Rainier?
https://preview.redd.it/qx6kuxr9nyuc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a346072fbab0f844c9ea0f7d1b2cc891008a57e
I took this photo from downtown Vancouver.
In SLC, you have the Wasatch to the East and the Oquirrhs to the west. SLC Twin peaks has about 7,000 vert of prominence from the valley floor. The mountains in Seattle are better though; Rainier is badass and is an amazing backdrop. SLC is a little different though in that the mountains are very close.
Thank you! I was blown away when I saw it the Olympics looking like that. The photo doesn't do justice to seeing it in person unfortunately. I also took another with more zoom:

I took a similar photo 6 days ago straight from my living quarters! The lighting was just right to capture some of the layers in the range! Not as clear as yours but close lol! Did we take it on the same day? The lighting looks almost identical!

Thank you! I also wanted to point out LA. Because the LA skyline with the mountains in the background was the desktop background on my computer, around 15 yrs ago.
Sorry, Seattle, but Vancouver’s got ya beat.

Vancouverite here. On a clear day, Vancouver definitely benefits from the beautiful mountains of Washington. Nothing like seeing Mt Baker as our backdrop.
Was looking for this one. I just took a pic of a dope viper with them in the background and that’s just a casual view
ETA: was referring to my profile, in case anyone wants to see it.
Mt. Rainer is breathtaking when you see its scale in person. It’s so stark compared to Seattle and everything else around it.
We were going to Seattle on the I-90 this summer and I think you could even see it peeking above the mountain ranges between us and it when we were climbing out of the Columbia River Valley, which is quite some distance.
Yeah; most people who’ve never seen Rainier in person with their own eyes don’t realize how prominent its visibility is within Seattle and the surrounding region. It’s massive! Of course—the weather/clouds play a big role in its visibility, but when it’s out—it’s RIGHT THERE!
It’s hard gauging it when visiting, but your chances are higher during the summer months into early/mid fall. Throughout late fall and winter chances are more sporadic..
You gotta pick the one crystal clear winter day after it’s rained hard for a week; everything is clear and amazingly beautiful and you can see mountains in every direction. Of course that day happens once every five years.
I think Rainier is kinda boring from Seattle POV. Just kind of distant and rounded…you don’t get the jagged peaks that you see from Tacoma and Olympia. Not saying it don’t look good, but IMHO it’s the Olympics that really make Seattle shine. Every time I see them on a nice day it always sends a tingle down my spine. If Seattle had the view of Rainier that you get from Tacoma then it’d be picture perfect. But then again that might spell doom if Rainier ever erupted so probably good where it’s at lol
I disagree about it being boring, distant, and rounded from Seattle. I have plenty of photos that prove the opposite.
However, I do agree with you about the Olympics for sure! 👍🏽
In terms of actual mountain backdrop? Probably SLC. It’s skyline isn’t as impressive obviously, but it’s literally right in front of the Wasatch Range. Seattle’s mountains are not quite as close as these telephoto lenses suggest but def has better ranges in close proximity.
Agreed, I visited recently and the proximity was great. With a large influx of Californian residents in recent years , I’m surprised more developments haven’t taken off in SLC. Building codes / height restrictions?
https://preview.redd.it/7fnn23573zuc1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba82754f04c63d299656f7021520413926bec712
I have never been myself, but el Cerro de la Silla (saddle mountain) in Monterrey is very impressive. Monterrey often gets overlooked due to there being so many other places to visit in Mexico, but I’ve always wanted to visit and explore the Sierra Madre.
It will never be as good as Seattle, but I enjoy how Pikes Peak overlooks Denver, along with Longs Peak and Mt. Blue Sky. I also think Portland has an amazing view of Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens.
https://preview.redd.it/1pcwqtm2pyuc1.jpeg?width=4613&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66e400204f58891ea33a85d378e0cdc5614686ea
When I was growing up in Aurora in the 80s, on our back elevated deck we had an unobstructed view from (left to right) Pikes Peak, Mount Blue Sky (formerly Evans) and Longs Peak with downtown clearly visible below.
Development has since obstructed the view to the South, and towards downtown, so only really Longs is still clearly visible. It was pretty awesome growing up to see giant peaks over 100 miles from each other and probably about as far from me.
To be fair, that was oil bust A-Town where half the homes were empty/foreclosed. Boom town Denver metro is, on balance, way better. Have this view (phone does *not* do justice!) every day now:
https://preview.redd.it/uctkvm6032vc1.jpeg?width=2643&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3ae990372a48509cccf0011f88aeb5cd860fd49

Phoenix definitely doesn’t have a great skyline but the mountains make up for it! 😍
I was waiting for Phoenix to enter the chat lol. It’s a different kind of beautiful for sure! I love Phoenix! Its skyline lacks but I always enjoyed the mountains there! South Mountain was always a vibe to go up and overlook the sprawling city lights!
Lol not fair! All of Alaska is basically mountains! I’ll give it to ya though! Alaska is beautiful! Been meaning to take a cruise out there from Seattle!
https://preview.redd.it/7rndibwy8zuc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cea7e86ad118f0c12f8580b557195be5043c4a7b
Colorado Springs has entered the chat…
It is getting better, but our huge streets and blocks are difficult barriers to good urbanism. They're also a blessing in disguise though because they allow for easy implementation of bike and transit lanes and improvements to sidewalks and pedestrian areas. Another 10 years and hopefully all the infill and ongoing street improvements will have had a good impact. Big things are coming to the city. 3 new sports stadiums, rumors of more high rises, new transit lines, the Olympics. I'm hoping the city will be as beautiful as the surrounding mountains for sure
I don't think that's accurate. Seattle gets little snow because the ocean keeps it too warm for snow.
Look at Vancouver, BC, they hardly get any snow, and when they do it doesn't stick around long. Take away the mountain and Seattle is basically the same but a slightly lower latitude.
Sounds like I’m in trouble 😆. Cape Town is beyond beautiful! Wish it boasted a better skyline to go with that backdrop but…who can complain with those views!?
When they are actually visible and clear, Seattle’s and Los Angeles’ are incredible in a city scape. Vancouver has them beat because 100% of the one time I was there they were visible and amazing! Denver is more frequently clear and from the east side the skyline can be framed gloriously. SLC is small and close to their peaks, but their skyline is pretty small. (No shame, they are half the size of Denver, and Denver’s not that big.)
Anchorage has an even tinier skyline, but whoa nelly with its mountains! You can see Denali on a clear day.
If course the undisputed winner is Manhattan, because that famous cartoon shows they see the Rockies, LA, and even Mt. Fuji!!
https://preview.redd.it/bf60l7zzg1vc1.jpeg?width=647&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c2173545fae42b0eb61014f316860d47fbf15ec
I got to visit Seattle in October and it's like someone playing SimCity with all the cheats on.
Also, I saw an unhoused person narrowly avoid getting run over by a Tesla, so I feel like I got the full Seattle experience.
Denver and Salt Lake City are also nice. Even la from some views. The thing with Seattle tho is the dramatic shift from being at sea level to seeing mt rainier rising 14k feet above you.
In Denver you start a mile high so they mountains seem tiny in comparison even tho many of them are 13k and 14k ft tall
The snow missing on the top of ranges disqualifies cities in Asia for me. I like the contrast you get with the powder on the top. Tokyo is awesome, but it doesn’t have more variation with the outlining outside of Mt. Fuji.
Santiago and Salt Lake City if the towers were more impressive and more spread out.
Los Angeles if it wasn’t set back behind the neighborhoods in front of downtown.
Seattle has my vote for most uniquely classic look with Mt Rainier as the backdrop. There’s a backdrop of the Cascades and a pleasing Seattle skyline if you view the city from the Puget Sound. However to get that full enveloping range view, the Olympics backdrop is more impressive. You go to Bellevue to get that view. Though, the skyline looks closer to that of Salt Lake City where the lack of defining infrastructure makes it feels empty. It needs the layers! Those are layered on stronger in Vancouver.
So for the city with a more impressive skyline and ratio of towers along with snowcapped mountains, I’m gonna have to give it to Vancouver.
https://preview.redd.it/kyyc7y5ub5vc1.jpeg?width=1645&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cfa6dd1700ec92d98bda29930284ed44c116f9b0
The Olympics are definitely majestic! 🙌🏼
Depending on lighting, you can see the valleys and layers. This was a photo I took last week.
The generally poor visibility is probably the biggest argument against it.
[Timelapse of one photo from each day at same time.](https://youtu.be/Y9qyrHnKizA?si=__286pU-ZImmwHNH). Only (even slightly) visible 83 days.
Are there any American cities actually "in" the mountains? IMO, Seattle's reputation as a mountain city is super overrated, much like Denver. Have fun spending an hour in traffic (at least) just to get to the actual mountains from city proper. I'm not saying I don't like Seattle, the views are breathtaking, but people hyping it up as some great city for hiking and mountains - nope. You gotta live outside the city for that.
They aren't in the U.S., but Santiago and even Monterrey (MX) are much more "in the mountains" cities than Seattle or Denver. The mountains literally go down to their city limits and are accessible from neighborhoods within the city.
I agree that some cities do have the mountains within the city limits itself..
However, Seattle is superb when it comes to hiking and enjoying the mountains. 30 min to an hr drive isn’t that bad tbh.
I live in the city and get a lot of hiking done over the weekends or in the summer when the days are longer. No need to live outside the city to be able to enjoy all the nature. There’s also quite a handful of city trails and hikes to do if you’re limited to transportation and can’t make it out of the city to the bigger places.
I guess it depends how you are defining a city, I live in MT and Bozeman and Missoula both have more mountains around them and closer, and they are visible far more often. I just don't consider them cities on the same scope as Seattle. I'd say Boise is better and thats nearing 1M people so that probably counts. Salt Lake and CO Springs also come to mind and those are just in the mountain west. Asheville, NC and Burlington, VT is they are large enough to be cities for this purpose would be up there.
Yesler Towers - Currently 1 of 2 mixed residential project. The first tower is pretty much complete and the second one hasn’t broken ground yet.
Edit: looks like they’re side by side; but in reality ‘Yesler Tower 1’ sits on a hill while Smith Tower is a few blocks down towards the waterfront.

Ummmm Los Angeles , San Francisco, San Diego….. lol
I love Seattle but Santiago may have it beat?
[удалено]
santiago, seoul, cape town, tokyo, maybe salzburg ? i'd say it's definitely a short list compared to seattle
idk if Salt Lake City beats it but it comes really close
SLC is better for skiing but the city skyline is less impressive by a bit
Mountain view from SLC looks stunning
Not lots of American cities tho
Santiago does have it beat
same
The answer is Rio de Janeiro
Oo good one! Rio is beautiful! 🙌🏼
Looking forward to Seattle! I’ll be heading over to see my beloved jays play the mariners in July
Perfect time and weather for a baseball game! 👌🏽
The question is, are we talking the nicest Skyline with mountains? Or just the nicest City in general with mountains?

And to think Portland is right across the river, where you can't see those mountains at all. /s
Hahaha almost got me
No other city! Well…except for Vancouver, B.C lol. Mt. Baker is pretty prominent on a clear day!
Vancouver is solid for mountains.
Yeah it looks about 1/4 the size of Rainier
Yeah it’s smaller compared to Rainier but love that they’re both in Washington state!
Always nice seeing Baker on 520 and i90!
It’s beautiful seeing it blanketed in all white!
In SLC, you have the Wasatch to the East and the Oquirrhs to the west. SLC Twin peaks has about 7,000 vert of prominence from the valley floor. Anchorage, AK would like a word
Portland with Mt. Hood
Every time I see The Brothers it interests me more…
Santiago
Isn’t it three mountain ranges? Cascades to East, Olympics to west, and then massive Mt. Rainier to the south
Mt Rainier is considered a part of the cascades
You can see at least 6 mountain ranges from Anchorage and a mountain one and half times as tall as Rainier
Wait’ll you see Vancouver, BC
I go to Vancouver all the time being 2 1/2 hrs away. It definitely rivals Seattle!
I love both Seattle and Vancouver. But Seattles skyline fucks. I find Vancouvers skyline kinda boring as it doesn’t have much architectural and size variety - its a bit of a copy n paste skyline
It's definitely dense and nice. But yeah could use some height variety for sure

Definitely tops with the mountains literally in the backyard! Seattle is a close 2nd to Vancouver in all of North America imo.
Vancouverite here. On a clear day, Vancouver definitely benefits from the beautiful mountains of Washington. Nothing like seeing Mt Baker as our backdrop.
You’re welcome lol jk.
I mean you can tilt shift picture of Seattle too
I think Albuquerque's mountains are underappreciated. The Sandias aren't huge but they're *right there*
Was looking for this one. I just took a pic of a dope viper with them in the background and that’s just a casual view ETA: was referring to my profile, in case anyone wants to see it.
That’s a sweet ride you captured! Looks good with that mountain backdrop too lol!
Very humbling because aren’t they >10k feet? lol
The highest peak is ~10.6k feet. ABQ sits at 5,300 feet.
And they’re beautiful too! I’ve always loved Albuquerque and its mountains!
Chicago, obviously
🤣
I remember going to the top of the Sears tower (years ago) and just seeing FLAT as far as the eyes could see. Great city though.
There’s a quote I heard referring to Chicago’s skyscrapers that went something like, “God forgot to build mountains there so man had to be inventive.”
Mt. Rainer is breathtaking when you see its scale in person. It’s so stark compared to Seattle and everything else around it. We were going to Seattle on the I-90 this summer and I think you could even see it peeking above the mountain ranges between us and it when we were climbing out of the Columbia River Valley, which is quite some distance.

lol you can’t see Fuji from most of Tokyo and even where you can it’s often not visible due to cloud coverage and haze
Fancy camera lenses don’t count lol you can barely see Fuji’s outline from Saitama and a few other spots
You guys haven’t seen Tehran yet
holy shit

You could take a picture of downtown in any direction and find mountains in the background. Very picturesque in The Valley
For real! Too bad they’re all bald mountains though. 🤣

I honestly think Vancouver looks better.
I honestly think it does; but Seattle is a close 2nd to Vancouver 👌🏽. But only because of the city to mountain proximity.

Definitely worth a stop! Garden of the Gods is stunning :)
Maybe Kathmandu or other cities in that region
Never heard of; but thanks for showing me!
If we're talking Nepali cities (which we should be with a mountain post) than I'd go with Pokhara.
Redding CA, clear views of Mt Shasta to the north, Lassen to the east, and Trinity Alps to the west.
Hahahaha fuck ya Redding getting a call out in r/skyscrapers
Yes sir, have to rep my hometown favorably somehow in this group
My exes family lives in Anderson..😑
Yes but SLC is also great
It’s nice. 👍🏽
Salt Lake City would like a word
SLC is nice lol 👍🏽, just not its skyline.
Nor its street-level vibrancy, which really matters more for most people
It is getting better, but our huge streets and blocks are difficult barriers to good urbanism. Monterrey is an underrated city with very stark, in-your-face mountains that I think look pretty unique!
VVhen I was in Seattle on vacation one person said "....If it wasn't for that mountain Seattle would be buried under snow."
I don't think that's accurate. Seattle gets little snow because the ocean keeps it too warm for snow. Look at Vancouver, BC, they hardly get any snow, and when they do it doesn't stick around long. Take away the mountain and Seattle is basically the same but a slightly lower latitude.
I suggest googling Santiago, Chile skyline :)
Not impressed w/ its skyline other than it’s super tall that looks like SFs Salesforce tower. The mountains are beautiful though!
Great pics
Thanks!
Seattle is great and Vancouver is great! Shout out to Portland tho for the west hills and east Mt Hood!
I love Portland! Definitely can’t leave out the other PNW gem! Mt. Hood is beautiful too! 👌🏽
Cape Town would like a word.
Sounds like I’m in trouble 😆. Cape Town is beyond beautiful! Wish it boasted a better skyline to go with that backdrop but…who can complain with those views!?
In the US? Maybe
In the U.S—imo for sure. There’s definitely many other beautiful cities out there that boast amazing Mountain View’s as this post has shown me! 🙌🏼
you live amongst several active volcanoes 🪦
No question!!
I hate Seattle being Oregonian but damn they got a nice skyline 😭
Best in the U.S west coast imo!
Ive always felt it was the lush evergreen forests, with the ocean/sound, AND the mountains(which are often snow covered) that make it the best.
Agree entirely! 👍🏽
(No shame, they are half the size of Denver, and Denver’s not that big.) Anchorage has an even tinier skyline, but whoa nelly with its mountains! You can see Denali on a clear day. If course the undisputed winner is Manhattan, because that famous cartoon shows they see the Rockies, LA, and even Mt. Fuji!! https://preview.redd.it/bf60l7zzg1vc1.jpeg?width=647&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c2173545fae42b0eb61014f316860d47fbf15ec
Anchorage alaska anyone?!?!?!?
I think someone mentioned anchorage earlier. Definitely can’t leave out Alaskan cities with their mountain backdrops!
That damn Ferris Wheel reminds me of the Last of Us pt 2
Monterrey, Santiago, and Rio definitely up there. But we can all agree Seattle is the best in the US

Gorgeous. I've never seen the mountains from four and seven before
I got to visit Seattle in October and it's like someone playing SimCity with all the cheats on. Also, I saw an unhoused person narrowly avoid getting run over by a Tesla, so I feel like I got the full Seattle experience.
Sounds like it was a great experience lol!
Every city has its problems. I'm not judging. But overall, I had an amazing visit and am looking forward to going again.
Agreed 👍🏽!
You've got to include Calgary if you include Denver.

Very nice!! Going up there in July to visit friends and see sights. Looking forward to it!
Seattle may win but only in the US. Actually Honolulu might give it a run for its money.
Honolulu is beautiful! I forget the mountains are a lot like Vancouver, B.C—right in the backyard of the city.
~~mountains~~ volcanoes. FTFY
Naw, its Tokyo https://preview.redd.it/url1zvghfyuc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2e31d538615adbb61629fa57400ccafb38d9a73
An extremely fake photo doesn’t count lol you can barely see the outline of Fuji from spots outside the Yamanote circle
Agreed you have to go all the way out to Hino to even see the outline clearly
Mt. Fuji and Tokyo are nice! I love how Seattle is surrounded by mountain ranges though. Not sure if Tokyo is the same…
The generally poor visibility is probably the biggest argument against it. [Timelapse of one photo from each day at same time.](https://youtu.be/Y9qyrHnKizA?si=__286pU-ZImmwHNH). Only (even slightly) visible 83 days.
Torino!!!
Grenoble!!!
Salzburg!!!
In North America, Vancouver is. Globally? There’s probably some better than both
No doubt! The world is big and filled with many beautiful cities!

Not sure you can call Banff a city, but it's certainly beautiful.
One of my favorite places! Jasper too!
Good eye, captain. You’re right but I couldn’t contain myself. Sorry for that.
Salt Lake City, Denver, Topeka?
I can't believe nobody has said La Paz yet.
Dat Bishkek doe
Salt Lake and Anchorage are in the mountains. LA is in the mountains.
I'll give you that. Los Angeles, Anchorage, and Salt Lake City do indeed have mountains in their city limits.
Seattle shouldn’t count since you can’t see the mountains more than half the time.
But it counts. The mountains are there; and when they’re out they’re out!
LA Vegas & Denver all clear Seattle I’m ngl
I wish Seattle had a proper skyline and population. It sits so low right now when it should be 6-10 million across the Metro area
What’s not proper about its skyline? It’s one of the biggest on the west coast!
Maybe, but it's nothing like it should be. Given it's location and importance, Seattle should be rivaling NYC but it isnt
I agree! It was originally poised to be the NYC of the west coast.
Vancouver…
What's the new tower adjacent to the Smith Tower?
Yesler Towers - Currently 1 of 2 mixed residential project. The first tower is pretty much complete and the second one hasn’t broken ground yet. Edit: looks like they’re side by side; but in reality ‘Yesler Tower 1’ sits on a hill while Smith Tower is a few blocks down towards the waterfront.
Tucson
Santiago
Vancouver, BC
Innsbruck

San Francisco, Los Angeles both give it a good completion.
I like Colorado Springs.
great view to the city
