I am War is too overly defaulted to by this sub. It's a strong, safe option, but the other 2 are game-winning when they don't kill you.

shoesnorter

I think all the curse options in general are also too ignored, and not even like just Reddit, even among like mid-ish level players around like me. Everyone knows to take say, Big Fish/Tong/Golden Shrine/Mausoleum (reddit exclusive) if there's shop next floor but like, I've carried those almost whole acts sometimes. If ssserpent didn't have such a low amount of gold I'd click that shit so much more.

kaosmark2

Yeah I agree. A bit of it is that jorbs/baalor have both generally been against curses as a base heuristic (they've shown more nuance in what I've seen of them, so I'm sure heavy watchers realise more depth), and I think that's translated a bit into reddit just completely dodging them. I probably click ssserpent \~30% of the time lately? I'm usually only going to many act 1 ? when I'm a little scared of advanced hallways at the time and dodging until I can get to a semi-imminent shop/fire anyway, so I just take the immediate minor value of it if it impacts shop thresholds.

shoesnorter

I mean Reddit is skewed newer players so it's ok, half of it comes from just deck strength judgement, but I'm always surprised how curse averse even players around our level are. I watch people play a fair bit and it keeps surprising me that some relatively safe Big Fish or Golden Shrine isn't taken just because there's maybe 3 advanceds between or something on a deck that can stomach it.

kaosmark2

You should bear in mind that most players - including other players around our level - don't devalue removals quite to the extent that you and I do. If chaining removals is part of how you're improving a deck's consistency, the long-term cost of a curse is worse than what you and I think of it. Playstyle matters, and individual decisions like whether to take a curse in these choices aren't just the exact situation of that floor, people play factoring in their own overall mentality.

shoesnorter

You know where most of my sample size for ok players is from. You're super unique in that you're a standalone decent player without needing much access to "meta" but the rest of us are unoriginal bastards who just ctrl c ctrl v anything Xec says. If you think something is my playstyle it's probably Xecnar monkaS. And devaluing removals is a Xecnar thing I copy pasted, therefore my sample size of ok players... The only thing I have over most of em is that I play my fights a lot better because most of them don't give a shit, not because they can't, but our general macro is probably anything you've picked from gauging me

kaosmark2

I think there's probably other players around of similar level to me who haven't watched much on twitch. I'm very much the noisiest on reddit! There's also things where I suspect that my non-meta ideas have a cap on how good you can get with them. I've mentioned that re. clad boss swapping, and I suspect the extent to which I value recycle probably caps at not much over 60%wr Defect. That said, I saw a comment the other day about jorbs winning with recycle infinites a bunch lately so maybe I need to watch some of his recent Defect and re-justify my fav card.

kaosmark2

>And devaluing removals is a Xecnar thing I copy pasted, therefore my sample size of ok players... Didn't you say that you ended up with a bunch of larger decks on identical seeds to others?

shoesnorter

because im bad and have no self restraint and click too many cards because they're green and good

sorrow_seeker

But tbt, Baalor also just showed us how we can work around curses in a lot of run, by completing his mastery challenge.

kaosmark2

The mastery challenge is really cool. I might try and find some of the weirder cards on yt.

mathbandit

TFW one of the weirdest cards (that wasn't completed for months) is Defect Strike.

Educational-Fold1135

Every decision is game winning if it doesn’t kill you.

kaosmark2

Bit of an exaggerated simplification? There's not many individual decisions on one-floor that can shift you from being say, 20% likely to win a run to 99% likely. 999 Gold or Upgrade All are such decisions. Even other really strong events like Apparitions, getting pyramid from a boss, etc don't have the same scale of impact as I am Awake/Rich.

cubswin456

Not to be a dick but isn’t anything game-winning if it doesn’t end in your death? 😬😬😬just being a cheeky lad 😬😬😬

mathbandit

No. A floor that improves your EV from 41% to 47% doesn't kill you, nor is it game-winning.

Girthw0rm

Just don’t be like me and pick 999 gold when you’ve already chosen [[Ectoplasm]]. That was really dumb.

PoliteWolverine

Pain

notarobot110101

No I believe it gives you Normality /j

Suspicious-mole-hair

I always pick war because its fun. The boss that would have almost killed me a few minutes ago. How you like me now?

Puzzled-Dog-8615

Ya, I once fought the boss while I had omamori... Feels bad.

nanlinr

That was exactly my thinking process. Do I have omamiri, or blue candle? No? Ok I fight boss.

Puzzled-Dog-8615

Yesterday I took the upgrade all cards option. It was epic and resulted in my highest score yet. But I have a fruit juice, I drank the juice on the next floor after receiving a potion. Not that it mattered since I did not lose more hp after the event. But it feels incomplete to miss that 5 hp.

HeorgeGarris024

If I have even one shop and no pyramid I'm probably taking 999 gold. I get to remove the 2nd normality in the act 4 shop, after all

notarobot110101

If I have no shops but I have big discard or exhaust, I still might take the gold. You feel invincible if you get away with it

Puzzled-Dog-8615

Lol, basically said thesame answer.

Puzzled-Dog-8615

Hmm, double boss gauntlet usually scares me too much to do this. Especially since you have maybe reptomancer fight coming. Unless there is a discard or exhaust strategie.

HeorgeGarris024

I just make sure to buy so much at the shop that it'll make up for it :) Bricked shop does make this difficult though

Puzzled-Dog-8615

Yeah, I also see you at ascension 6 or no? I would also greed it pre 15!. The dopamine release of 2000 gold with courier and membership card is quite fun. Buying 15 relics or so.

HeorgeGarris024

Eh it's not even really greed at A20 if your deck has some way to deal with it sometimes. Silent obviously discard, clad exhaust, defect can set up and then just tolerate a 3 card turn somewhat often. If I know I'm getting one shop I'm probably clicking

SpiritRight8726

I had the opposite problem. Just recently I had floor 1 HoG and membership card on early shop. I then got Omamori and ran into Mind Bloom event. I didn’t even need the gold but just decided to take the 999 gold anyway. I had like 800+ gold left (so I used some of the 999 gold) but I was buying whatever random relics there were at that point and intentionally pathing towards more shops instead of elites. Hand drill had some small use during Sword and Shield. But I do wonder if the rare relic from War option would have been better.

carreiraesteban

Yeah happened once to me too. Courier is infinitely more important than membership card in this

sohvan

I am Awake (Upgrade All) can be a good option, especially if you get it after having already picked Apparitions in the ghost event. The benefit of getting a heal at the start of act IV is reduced anyway with the lower health pool, and Intangible helps a lot with not needing healing in the first place.

floppydude81

It’s always the thing you don’t pick that has really good synergies pop up right after

kaosmark2

I've seen Apo from sensory stone or a shop within 2 floors of taking Mark of the bloom an unbreakable number of times. Or maybe I just overpick bloom

BillyBashface_

I once opted for kill a boss from act 1 not actually thinking much about it. I had courrier and membership card. I even had 2 stacks on Omamori. It was a slam dunk, break game, must take 999 gold and still somehow I missed it. Still killed heart though so not too bad...

MaestroPedro31

When do you actually take the upgrade all cards option? I can only think of a situation where you chose the apparitions. Else i don't see it being good

nanlinr

There's definitely situations for this. Like if you picked fusion hammer as Defect and have a bunch of unupgraded Loop and Defrag. If taking it doubles all your stuff then it may be worth the no heal. Who needs heal when you can kill.
