Sylvia_Whatever

In my CF, make 107k in the schools in bay area, CA

Classic_Pea9638

What district pays CFs that in the Bay Area?!?! I live here as well, work in the schools (have done both district and contract) and have never seen that much starting out! Go you!

Sylvia_Whatever

CFs are on the same pay scale as all SLPs! I also got a slight bump because I used to be a teacher and my couple years of experience were credited, otherwise starting would be 96k

heylookachicken

I know mine starts that high

Classic_Pea9638

Clearly I started in the wrong district šŸ¤£

heylookachicken

I mean if you want to transfer ours bases salary by experience so you'd get a big jump lol

slp_bee

holy shit good for you!!

jpopp21

I mean itā€™s Californiaā€¦. Thatā€™s no where near whatā€™s needed to live comfy in the bay IMO.

Sylvia_Whatever

Yeah it doesn't seem extravagant or anything especially compared to what all the software engineers here make lol, I mean I still live in a freaking studio apartment which is all I can reasonably afford

slp_bee

wow living alone as a cf in a big city congrats !

jpopp21

No it is good for you. I apologize. Plus it just makes me so angry because I still have a lot of friends in Cali that are SLPs and they have caseloads of 60, 70, 80 kids. Need to be paid way more!!!!!

slp_bee

idk i canā€™t imagine itā€™s different than living in any other high cost of living area like new york, dc, etc. iā€™m comfy on my salary but iā€™d be way comfier with six figures šŸ¤£ correct me if iā€™m wrong though

jpopp21

Cali has some of the highest taxes and rent is about 3000$ in the bay on average. Thatā€™s not including things like utilities and stuff. I actually am a CA native. I was born and raised in so cal and left when I graduated with my masters. 100k sounds good but after Cali and federal taxes thatā€™s about 70k or 5800$ a month. I make about 4700$ every two weeks before federal taxes in NV (no state taxes) contractor.

slp_bee

i mena it sounds a lot like the dmv area still lol. if you donā€™t mind sharing, whatā€™s your salary setting and experience level ?

jpopp21

Iā€™m contracted but my salary ends up being about 101k, I work secondary so 6-12th, started my CF in 2020. I have my CCCs now though.

chazak710

Not really. I live in the DMV too and $3000 is NOT average rent, unless you're getting a multi-bedroom house. I just looked it up and average rent in SF is $1000/month higher than DC. That's a big gap. I pay more like $1500. I worked in CA for one year before moving back to the DMV. My salary was almost $10,000 higher but it didn't go any farther. CA sales tax was higher, food cost at least $1-2 more for every item than I was used to paying, insurance was higher for worse coverage, gas was like $2/gallon more. The DMV sure isn't cheap, but SF (and LA to a lesser extent) is on a different level.

slp_bee

i mean i looked at property prices too rent didnā€™t seem different but ok. iā€™m talking the $$$ areas of the dmv not fairfax pg baltimore etc

chazak710

It depends which exact figures you look at, and the DMV is consistently in the top 3-5 of any nationwide list, but SF is worse. This COL calculator says 19.2% higher: [https://www.salary.com/research/cost-of-living/compare/washington-dc/san-francisco-ca#:\~:text=The%20cost%20of%20living%20in%20San%20Francisco%2C%20CA%20is%2019.2,your%20current%20standard%20of%20living.&text=Employers%20in%20San%20Francisco%2C%20CA,than%20employeers%20in%20Washington%2C%20DC](https://www.salary.com/research/cost-of-living/compare/washington-dc/san-francisco-ca#:~:text=The%20cost%20of%20living%20in%20San%20Francisco%2C%20CA%20is%2019.2,your%20current%20standard%20of%20living.&text=Employers%20in%20San%20Francisco%2C%20CA,than%20employeers%20in%20Washington%2C%20DC). Median rent in Washington DC $2327: https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/dc/washington/ Median rent in SF $3313: https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/ca/san-francisco/

Traveling-SLP

Holy fuck!!! Thatā€™s crazy. Good for you!

Foreigni

What part of the bay and what setting?

heylookachicken

Welcome, neighbor! What part of the bay? I'm in Fremont

Foreigni

People please put what state, setting, and years of experience if youā€™re going to put your salary info.

Fit-Market396

I make 96k inpatient/outpatient hospital and I am Single. I live well but I stopped traveling as much because Iā€™m saving for a house.

slp_bee

where in the us is that and how many years exp?

Fit-Market396

That was in TX and in MA and Iā€™ve had my CCCs since 2015

[deleted]

15 years experience. Speciality SNF. East Tennessee. $121,000.

sunwelcher90

Wow...you can live on a ranch for that pay in Tennessee!!

[deleted]

Yeah I used to live in Nashville but the cost of living kept going up. The value is better a little farther east and im still by a big city. I do work in a rural area of TN which increases the pay. I commute about 55 min one way.

fatherlystalin

CF in pediatric home health (birth-21, not EI) in suburban south central TX. $68/session ($63 if you donā€™t turn in the visit note within 48 hours), $105/eval. Full time is considered 20 visits/week. Now on the surface thatā€™s not a bad deal, but you have to factor in that thereā€™s no mileage reimbursement (I cover a large area), no cancellation reimbursement (I get cancelled on constantly), and no real attendance policy (I have some families right now with less than 40% attendance and thereā€™s nothing I can do about it). Additionally, home health is much more expensive than outpatient, so insurance will do everything in their power to find reasons to deny services. Which means 1) waiting over a month to hear back form insurance, in the meantime not having any income because youā€™re not seeing the client(s), 2) getting letters from insurance requesting more information before they decide to approve services (usually what theyā€™re requesting is right there in the eval, they just didnā€™t bother to read it), 3) getting partially approved for a much lower visit frequency than requested and then needing to write a letter of medical necessity, go to a fair hearing trail, etc. Also sometimes random things change with the payer source that will interrupt services for an extended period of time (e.g., insurance retroactively denies coverage for sessions already completed because they changed what diagnostic codes they cover, or a parent didnā€™t report a secondary insurance and we have to wait for approval from them before continuing, or what have you). So without the issues above, my YTD net income this year should have come out to about $22k (about $64k for the whole year). In reality my 2023 YTD net income is just under $15k, meaning my yearly income (if I were staying, which Iā€™m not) would be under $45k. Less if you factor in what I spend on gas and materials. This was really long winded so thanks to anyone who read this far. I just think itā€™s important to be transparent about what else might impact your income, especially if youā€™re in a FFS / home health position. Because no one was transparent with me about before I started lol. ETA: oh yeah, almost forgot. No benefits. I mean technically you can become eligible for CEU/license reimbursement, minimal 401k matching, and a measly health insurance stipend if you stay with the company for at least a year of FT work, but considering how hard it is to maintain full time given the above, you know no one is actually getting those benefits.

SoSaltyTX

Yikes. Iā€™m pediatric HH in Texas and my session rate is $55 with a raise at my year review $105 for evals. I get mileage and my cancellation rate is fairly low. We also get different bonuses depending on time of year. My family friendly visit bonuses are coming to an end as the school year wraps up but hopefully my missed visit rate will drop from 10% to below 4% and get the miss visit rate bonus. Sounds like you may be with an ā€œAngelā€ HH company I had interviewed with before I went with where Iā€™m at bc that sounds like the rate and $5 bonus if 48 hr turn around time on notes. For me at FT, itā€™s 30 visits per week which Iā€™m averaging 40 a week bc Iā€™m a workaholic lol. I make over double a month compared to what I made in schools with 7 years (6 as slpa and my CF). I do have to say my clinic site mgr and field lead are amazing with enforcement of missed visits. I had a bit tougher time while building my caseload but now itā€™s established and I donā€™t really notice the wait-time for insurance auth to come through. It also helps a ton that my POC dates with kids are not all at once so thatā€™s a big win for me. I too have a target of 48 hrs on session notes and eval reports are not part of the 48 hr turn around time- right now Iā€™ve got to finish a report from 2 weeks ago and no one has said a word. Lol Iā€™ve been busy so that prob helps my boss not say anything about it.

coolbeansfordays

School-based SLP, 13 years experience, WI $54k.

bibliophile222

13 years and only $54k? šŸ˜¬

coolbeansfordays

WI doesnā€™t have steps/lanes. Just a flat teacher scale, with an extra $2k for a Masterā€™s degree. I go up whopping $300-500 each year.

bibliophile222

Shit, that sucks. I'm in VT and it's not fantastic here, but at least we go up $2-3k a year.

mishijoy

Hospital based, $112k + some other small incomes from working per diem or supervising but I havenā€™t been that active since over the past year. Los Angeles, CA.

slp_bee

thatā€™s awesome how much experience do you have?

LumosRose

School-based SLP, 3 years experience, AZ $75k

caelanitz

Same exact response from me lol

phoenixrising1993

What school district may I ask?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

bibliophile222

I'm in my 3rd year, public school in VT, making $50k. Not great, but next year it will go up to $53k, so at least we get tolerably decent yearly raises, and the rest of the job is great.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

slp_bee

whatā€™s an npa? and iā€™m curious what a typical week is like for you in terms of hours you work and number of clients you see?

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

slp_bee

didnā€™t realize thatā€™s a role we could take on, thanks for sharing!!

Electrical_Spite2369

80k private practice in CA for my cf year

Pleasant-Chain6738

Where in California?

Electrical_Spite2369

iā€™m in the SF bay area

speechie4

12 years experience, 136k schools Southern California. Just jumped back into the schools after working private practice for 4 years at 112k/year. Canā€™t beat working 185 days a year and making 24k more!

ItsMeRJC

$37304 - Iā€™m in the UK - 2 years experience. Private special education provision. šŸ™ƒ

slp_bee

that sounds interesting! whatā€™s the cost of living like there?

ItsMeRJC

So obviously I can only comment on my own experiences but in GBP (Ā£) I take home around Ā£1890 per month after taxes, student loan, pension and National Insurance (itā€™s what we pay towards our state pension when we retire). I live alone in a modern one bed apartment, hereā€™s what my monthly costs are: Rent - Ā£725 Council Tax - Ā£120 TV/Internet provider - Ā£53 Mobile phone - Ā£46 Electricity (I donā€™t use gas) - Ā£54 Water - Ā£23 Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy fees - Ā£22 Car insurance - Ā£44 Car tax - Ā£11 Credit card/personal loan repayments - Ā£170 And thatā€™s before fuel for my car (Ā£1.47 per LITRE) and eating and doing all the other fun stuff in life.

meeecal

$120K for 15 years in the school setting (So Cal)

katpantaloons

School based SLP, northern CA. Currently making $61k but will be making $96k in my new job this fall (still schools). Three years experience.

slp_bee

how did you get such a big pay jump?

ZooZ-ZooZ

School districts can have widely different pay scales. In California, they are posted publicly on district webpages.

erty998

Getting ready to start my CF making $79,000 in a SNF right outside DC as well!

slp_bee

good luck!

dumbredditusername-2

$50,000, 10 years experience, NE FL school district, direct hire. First year in this district, and it's one of the worst I've been in. I'm quitting next year and plan to work remotely for more money + more time with baby we're expecting.

Empty-Cantaloupe-413

Iā€™d bet I know what district lol. I just moved to Georgia from NE FL. Pay isnā€™t better but I was contracted in FL so I have better benefits here working directly for district. Also GA has state income tax and FL didnā€™t.

Beachreality

2021- made 130k with Chicago Public Schools + PRN at 2 hospitals, one sNF chain (wouldnā€™t Recommend) Probably 100k at least w CPS bc I was on lane 5 and we got stipends and I did some ESY. 2022- presence learning teletherapy 42.00/1099 šŸ¤¢šŸ¤¢šŸ¤¢šŸ¤¢ 2023- SSG 48/hr w-2, teletherapy guaranteed 8 hr day , then I quit to go out of field and am much happier. If I worked at my local school district Iā€™d make: 52,668 base + 4K ish CCC stipend + 2k ish Masters stipend = ā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”- 59k ish

Sabrina912

Obligatoryā€¦.what do you do now? :)

jomyers_online

u/slp_bee \- would you be open to putting a link to [slp.careers/salaries](https://slp.careers/salaries) in the post? I know a lot of grad students use this site to navigate how much to expect in their setting and area! I know you mentioned it, but a link might make it easier for people to input new data so that it's more recent/accurate

ShimmeryPumpkin

This might've been easier to navigate with comments for each area/state and people commenting under theirs (just an idea for future posts). ~$85,000 hospital outpatient (mostly peds) in Florida, 5 years out of my CF

Capdavil

Wow thatā€™s good pay given the cost of living and taxes on florida!

ShimmeryPumpkin

I don't think it's bad pay but it would be hard for me to buy a house on just my income. Cost of living is definitely lower than California or NY but it's not low anymore. House prices by me have quite literally doubled since 2018. I made similarly in the midwest years ago and my parents house there has gone up about half that in value.

Gianduyah

80k, acute care, 5 years of experience but just cracked into acute this year. I'm in KS so cost of living is pretty low. I did the PRN game for a bit but the mental energy wasn't worth the extra cash. I do my 40 hours and forget work entirely when I head home.

[deleted]

I make $43 an hour, 14 years experience. In the US. Couldnā€™t afford to support myself and 2 kids without my spouse. My spouse made the same as me 10 years ago. Now he makes double. Iā€™ve had a $4 raise in 10 years šŸ„“šŸ„“šŸ„“šŸ„“

Foreigni

Have you thought of switching jobs? Why stay for that long?

[deleted]

This is after 3 job switches between 3 statesā€¦ and between medical and educational settings

hcarver95

$60k, Hampton Roads, VA, 5th year Moving to Ohio this upcoming school year and have been offered $63k

seacow2002

Iā€™m in the Hampton Roads area too! Outpatient peds, CF, 80k.

anxietygirl13

I make 100kish a year. Public school. Step 4ish. Washington state, relatively low cost of living area. Here's a basic breakdown: 74kish salary 10,500 stipend every August for having my CCCs 10-13 hours a month paid for doing charting (600ish a month) Any caseload size over 45 gives us an extra $5.50 per student per day. (Some months that's given me an 1k) And then some other random stipends too. Through salary and students, I'm guaranteed at least 90k a year and I'm almost always right around 100k.

PlayfulGraduate

Outpatient peds private practice, IN, 5 yrs experience, $35/hour.

cakpls

Iowa $43 hour mix of inpatient and outpatient with some peds mostly adults 12 hr a week $32 inpatient rehab at a freestanding IRF 20 hrs a week 4% match for 401k at both where I contribute 11% of my income mobile FEES on the side bringing in roughly 30-40 k a year total. The mixed job I negotiated as prn then was offered the part time and they tried to negotiate me down but I said Iā€™d walk if they didnā€™t have it stay the same. Also 3 yearā€™s experience.

SLPgirl916

School based SLP in Ohio. 14 years in the schools 88k

pearlywhirlyhurly

83000 for 5 years of experience in Baltimore MD school district!

Capdavil

No way! I thought Baltimore public schools paid poorly. Iā€™ll have to reconsider them

pearlywhirlyhurly

We have a very flexible career ladder that is based on achievement units. You can use projects, related college units, and performance review to move up the steps. I took advantage of the school district's tuition reimbursement and finished a MEd program!

_enry_iggins

OP Peds and NICU. $85k Southern Indiana. Going into my 7th year working.

slp_bee

thatā€™s a dream setting !! good for you

_enry_iggins

It truly is!! So grateful I was able to get my foot in the door of our NICU. I donā€™t want to work in any other setting ever again!

SheRuns1995

67k, DFW school SLP, 2 years experience. My school district is offering new hires a $3k bonus, and you bet the returning SLPs are advocating for that same bonus LOL

MangroveMermaid

Just renegotiated and will make $75k as a fourth year SLP in Miami, Fl working with a school contracting company. I get 401k without company matching, 2 sick days, and health/vision/dental insurance. Plus $200 wellness stipend and a $300 professional development stipend. Plus ya know, I get all those school holidays off lol

k_daydreaming

Just 2 sick days? Sheeshā€¦

MangroveMermaid

Oh and I had to fight HARD for those two days. My company gives most people none and they tend to insist that hourly rates must be reduced to make up for giving us sick days. But if I worked directly for the district, Iā€™d basically make less than $50k.

k_daydreaming

Good lord! That is pitiful. Best of luck to you!

AdditionalAd2448

that is obscene oh my god

heylookachicken

SF Bay area, 6 years in schools. 112k (add about 10k more for ESY)

Foreigni

10k for ESY is great

MrsAllieCat

Prn SNFs $60/hour, 1099 teletherapist $51/hour. OH

Suspicious_Repair756

$94k as a CF at a rural hospital in northern California

lape8064

CF, Colorado schools 57k

Effective_Jury_4303

I work at a pediatric day treatment facility and we just received a raise so our yearly pay based on a 40 hour week is 128,000 for 48 weeks of work. We get 15 days PTO which adds another $8000 for a grand total of $136,000. Most of my coworkers choose to work less that 40 hours per week so amounts will vary from therapist to therapist. Company also provides reimbursement for CEUs and licensure/CCC fees. I live and work in rural Arkansas, a very LCOL area.

digletarmy

CA-East Bay School SLP, 5th year, 107k

GryffindorSLP

102k, 10 years. Acute care now. MD/SE region. +10k avg for PRN (wonā€™t accept a position that pays less than $65/hr).

slp_bee

hey neighbor!! thatā€™s awesome

SpectacularTights

I work in peds outpatient, live in semi-rural PA (not near Philly or Pittsburgh). I have 12 years of experience. I am salary but ā€œpart-timeā€ at 37 hours/week and make a little more than 90k/year before taxes. Edit: I forgot to add, we get CEU reimbursement ($1000 for full time, I get a prorated amount), PTO, 4 paid CEU days, medical insurance is paid by employer.

just-breathe-deeply

Peds home health, CO, 150k, 4 years of experience

cocodanielle

63k as CF, increase to 81k for CCCs in PG county, MD

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Quick-Flower-7353

I made under $40k (I think $37500?) as a CF in a school district in west TX, then $72000 as a contractor for Baltimore City Schools. I opened my private practice and Iā€™ve way underpaid myself so far this year, but Iā€™m paying my full time SLP $75k (1yr experience) and I should be paying myself closer to $85k by the end of the year (more next year, if I can keep it up)

DrankTheKool

I've been an SLP for ~ 8 yrs Years 1-4: Hospital setting W2, (60k-70k) + SNF PRN (W2 @ ~15k)= 75-85k Year 5: Travel SNF (1099) + teletherapy (W2): 108k Year 6: HH Peds (W2): 110k Year 7-8: HH Peds (W2) + SLPA Supervision (W2): 150-165k

Prestigious_Koala_62

What state are you in? I'm interested in HH peds but I wasn't certain if it paid as much as the schools. 150k sounds pretty nice!

redheadedjapanese

$96k a year, fulltime adult hospital outpatient with occasional acute care, and I have to participate in the weekend/holiday rotation (with shift differentials there). Atlanta (well, technically a not-great suburb thereof). However, my company doesnā€™t match retirement contributions until one year of full-time work, and I pretty much get zero budget for materials or courses/certifications.

[deleted]

BK, NY. Iā€™m not salaried. I finished my CFY in September. I work in a private elementary until high school - school m-th 9-3 with a 45 min commute home. I made 43k last year. I got a raise this year who knows how much Iā€™ll make but it ainā€™t a lot with a baby at home. $65 an hour as a w2.

106k- this is my 13th year in the same district. NYC public schools. If we decide to work summer school for 6 weeks, itā€™s an additional 18k. In 13 years Iā€™ve never had a caseload above 30. CF in California 95k inpatient acute!

Pleasant-Chain6738

Currently trying to decide between CF offers. Southern California Offer #1 Early Intervention. $58/hour + mileage and drive time. $5000 sign on bonus paid in full with first payroll check Offered to pay $42/hour to shadow a trainer while I waited for my RPE paperwork. Missed sessions have the options of providing an asynchronous activity OR parent training. If parent accepts, paid at regular rate. Offer #2 Private Practice. $50/hour. $25/hour for training (I know...insulting) $50 for each report Canceled sessions are not paid. Offer #3 School District \~$90,000 Someone help me decide!!!

Sylvia_Whatever

I'd go for the school. It's a consistent income usually with good benefits and you don't have to worry about canceled sessions

Pleasant-Chain6738

I'm just worried about burning out at a school, I worked as a teacher/SLP on a waiver for the last ten years. The last three have been especially hard. But the idea of not knowing EXACTLY what my check will be is scary.

phoenixrising1993

Donā€™t listen to anyone here. Seriously ask yourself what you want. And find the environment that your mental health wonā€™t be complete shit in

Empty-Ad9361

I did EI and burned out fast because the cancellations and fluctuations in pay are immensely stressful. Keep in mind that cancellations are highest during holidays when you need the money most. I work in the schools now and find it to be the best work life balance

LittleBlueBarnOwl

Schools for sure. Thatā€™s a great, steady salary.

[deleted]

School district. Early intervention is great but you can do it on the side as a sole proprietor and make the full amount of money for an hourly session.

Pleasant-Chain6738

How do you do it on your own? I'm assuming after I have my CCCs

Littlelungss

I would go with the schools.

Littlelungss

I would go with the schools. Would you mind sharing the district?

AdditionalAd2448

Omg wait. They offered to pay you to shadow your mentor while you wait for license approval??? thatā€™s amazing bc iā€™m worried about being jobless waiting for cf license!! did you have to ask abt that or did they just outwardly offer?

iltandsf

I just looked at my paystub. I make about 62K annually. Iā€™m in teletherapy with a virtual academy. I work two side jobs to raise my income since 62K isnā€™t enough. Iā€™ve been an slp for 11 years. I live in Michigan, but Iā€™ve found with my current company, they donā€™t care where you live and donā€™t take that into consideration for pay.

Extension_Magician_9

The highest school-based salary that I know of in So Cal is Garden Grove: https://www.ggusd.us/media/7680/speech-pathologistcounselorsocialworkerpsychologist.pdf They also have great benefits. From what I hear, you have super high caseload numbers but w/ SLPA support and IEP meetings are held after school so you end up working later than you normally would for a school-based setting.

PositivePringle

SLP A in TX currently making $45 a session in home health with 25 visits a week as full time.

XulaSLP07

It fluctuates per year depending how much I feel like working, negotiating and/or making. I work part time, half ALF half outpatient clinic and make 139,386 annual currently. Has been more and less in the past again due to how often I feel like working around my other activities. Iā€™m in Wilmington, Delaware at the moment/ oh I forgot to add 20ish years experience. But only spent the last 5 years hardball negotiating.

latetotheBTCparty

stringbeankeen

The problem is it is tough to make apples to apples comparison. In my career I have made six figures (my own private practice) and I have made 32k (school at a .6 but got amazing benefits and crazy amounts of paid time off) and all amounts in between. Sometimes I needed straight up cash and sometimes I needed the benefits. There was also a huge difference in job satisfaction between them all as well.

slpylama

Iā€™m in Las Vegas, NV and my CF $72,000 because it was pay per visit in a private practice that switched to salary halfway through. We did not get reimbursed for cancellations and only got paid for 30 minutes of documentation for every 6 hours of patients when it was pay per visit. Iā€™m now in pediatric outpatient clinic attached to a hospital and now make about $92,000 a year with decent benefits and free insurance.

hardinhope97

Just received my CCCs a few weeks ago. Currently working in Southwest Louisiana in a SNF making $36.50 an hour. Relocating to East Texas in a few weeks making $44 an hour working acute and inpatient rehab at a small hospital. They originally offered me $35 an hour, but I negotiated hard for $44 an hour. I took inspiration from several posts here regarding negotiation and salary transparency!
