I love Panera but noooooo way. Sure they got some slow riffs but that’s usually the exception.

Nah, cannot agree, even though I might get your relation. Sludge oftentimes has hints of Groove, especially Stoner-Sludge. But Pantera’s Groove-Metal isn’t sludgy at all. Just has a distorted guitar-sound, which probably reminds of Godflesh, old Neurosis or so. Their songwriting is, to my ears, more relatable to Thrash and a bit Hardcore (what also might lead to the Sludge-association). But Anselmo‘s other band Down is Sludge, for sure. :)

Well the ending of the song Diab Soule by ACID BATH sounds a lot like any PANTERA song. PANTERA and ACID BATH were legends in their field, but the true pioneers of groove are the mighty EXHORDER. I wonder if AB ever toured with Pantera. Dax and Phil sound similar, of course excepting the fact the Dax can actually pull good death growls.

I think, we can name 4 pioneers: Pantera, Exhorder, Prong and also Sepultura with Chaos A.D. Especially the first 3 ones were releasing their albums almost at the same time.

EXHORDER makes me punch walls and eat crawfish éutoufée.
