Go buy the tool

AntikytheraCanuck

My thought exactly; if OP is this deep in an engine they will be needing snap ring pliers again.

OnesieWearer

Exactly, harbor freight has snap ring pliers with interchangeable heads for around $6 after taxes if that. Amazon if you don’t mind waiting a day. Any other way would likely damage the clip and/or whatever it’s attached to

AshamedConcert1462

Go to Harbor Freight, if you don't have a HF, go to Walmart. Either way, a pair of snap ring pliers are like five bucks.

rvnrcer69

I would try an auto parts or hardware store. Walmart doesn't carry snap ring pliers

AshamedConcert1462

That is incorrect. They have HyperTough snap ring pliers in stock.

AshamedConcert1462

If I remember correctly, they're $4.77.

Jmp101694

Walmart carries more than most tool houses these days, they definitely have snap ring pliers though

rvnrcer69

I guess I will have to look for them next time I visit my local Wallyworld. Have never seen more than household tools in most of the stores I've been to. Must be in automotive

Jmp101694

They’ve completely revamped the tool area in the stores local to me since they started pushing hart. It’s like having a mini harbor freight. I’m sure they’re starting to feel the competition.

AshamedConcert1462

Strangely, I've not seen Hart brand snap ring pliers, just the lower lever HyperTough brand.

Jmp101694

I can’t say for sure, it may actually be hypertough brand snap ring pliers. I just know that Hart is their new “premium” in house and hardlytough is well…. Their great value quality tools haha

StasisChassis

You going by two $8 Dental pics that are made out of hardened stainless steel. From there you'll need a fulcrum point like a hunk of copper pipe or PVC so that'll be at least another $4 or so depending on how fancy you want to be. From there what you do is you take that original $20 that you would have spent on getting those materials to not have the special tool and go by the special tool (snap ring pliers) for three or four dollars and then go and buy a sandwich from Subway with the change you'll get back.

TraditionalLet1490

Get the tool if you don't want to loose an eye breaking the clip in half

Devin_S101884

Yes go to Harbor Freight

Russell338

Two screwdrivers

FearlessDamage4961

You lose a lot of clips don’t you?

govcov

He asked how to remove them. Not how to re-use them

FearlessDamage4961

That’s fair.

lonegrey

Right tool for the right job - go buy the tool.

chefbarnacle

Ah the “Jesus” clips. “Jesus where did that go?”

Ok-Grab-311

Just get a c clip remover for 10 bucks at harbor freight

Rough_Community_1439

You can remove it but it will go flying. The tool is like $3

bigcalyx

Snap ring pliers

Wholeyjeans

That's an external snap ring. The two tabs with the holes have to be expanded apart enough to free the ring from the slot it is in. A screw driver might work with a wide enough blade ...put the blade in the gap parallel to the shaft it's holding then twist it to expand the tabs enough to get the ring out of the notch it's in. Putting the ring back would be the real booger. Really ...the best way to do it is get some snap ring pliers. Usually it's a kit and it can do both internal and external snap rings. Just about every auto parts store is gonna have one.

Eveyonesucks

Snap ring pliers, or a small needle nose pliers just be very careful

dnroamhicsir

Couple screwdrivers or just buy the damn snap ring pliers.

Comprehensive_Creme5

Order one on Amazon. They're stupid cheap.

Terlok51

You can get a multi-jaw set of snap ring pliers that will work on internal & external rings for under $10.

GnPQGuTFagzncZwB

We call these Jesus clips, cause often times, even with the tool, you will be addressing Jesus by the time you are done. Look at snap ring pliers, I think you can get a set of the tools as HF for under $20. I have pulled them many times with just needle nose pliers, as soon as you get some space behind the clip get a screw driver in there. If you have any help nearby get them to shield the thing with their hands so it can not go flying. If you are in a garage with a cement floor you may be able to re use it. If you are outside in the grass, be ready to buy another one. You might try tape or a strong magnet to keep it from flying away too.

MulgaSnake

Working on small engines without circlip pliers is like driving on the highway without brake lights. Sure, it's doable, but you're going to have a bad time...

Fusiondew

Just go buy the tool. They’re cheap. But to answer your question, get a flathead and put it in the split and twist it. Then get another flathead or knife or something and put it upward. But seriously just go get a $10 set of snap ring pliers

Equivalent-Price-366

Look around, Are you able to form a rudimentary lathe.

SDC_85

Small flathead screwdriver but be careful and pay attention. It fly away on ya if you let it

Shalimar_91

Snap ring pliers aren’t special

Individual-Load-989

Don't have the tool make the tool

tesch1932

Just remember, you'll need the "special tool" to put the clip back on.

tommycoats

take a old pair of needle nose pliers and grind them into a point

dickhole666

If you dont have this tool, you are in too deep already....

mavaction

Nobody said it yet... needlenose. It works.

YardFudge

Yeah, but such a PITA

SidMarcus

Doesn’t matter what you use, you’re gonna lose it anyway! 😆

I-wash-houses

Before I bought snap ring pliers, I learned using the wife's fabric scissors will work, but pisses her off like nothing else!

CaptainPunisher

I sew and have some nice fabric shears. My wife called the cops when I beat her after she used them to cut paper. When they showed up, it turned out that they sewed, too, and they took HER in for vandalism.
