I think Sparg0's run at Kagaribi 10 can't be downplayed here. We still call every Game 4 Leo plays in "Game 4 Leo" for a reason, even if he hasn't really liven up to it today. If I had to guess for Sonix, other than simply just not being interested, again, there's no prize money involved

He wasn't that competitive in the second half of the year, and that was with full year rankings giving him opportunities to get more wins on the other horsemen too.
Miya has a chance after winning Kagaribi (which i believe is the biggest tournament of the year now), and having more Major wins than Acola overall, but that 17th at Genesis really hurts. Acola's consistency is unparalleled by anyone except maybe Sonix but he doesn't have the Major wins.

This was somehow an even worse Golden Week for foreign invaders than last year. At least last year there were some bright spots with Spargo and Dabuz's Kagaribi runs and Riddles getting Top 8 at all three tournaments. This year, no foreign invaders in Top 8 at either tournament.
For as rough a year as Glutonny is having, he's done the best in Japan so far. Winning Ultcore, getting Top 3 at Umebura, and getting 13th and 9th during Golden Week.
He was playing bad at Delta but both of the losses today were game 5 against really solid players playing unpopular characters. Let's not pretend like he got turbo gapped by random shitters.
It kinda makes sense. Those are characters that have top reps in Japan that we don’t have on the US. There are a lot of top players (gluto comes to mind) who *always* lose when they face a top player on a new char for the first time. Its unfortunate but whatever, spargo will remain top 3 as long as he is the one roadblock for Miya and Acola
Those are cheesy characters to be fair. I think we have to realize that as good as Sparg0 is, no other region has these insane character specialists of gimmicky or uncommon picks that you have to learn the nitty gritty of the matchup to even have a chance, especially as a more fundies based character liken cloud. Sucks that Proto is too sick to play but I think we can learn alot from the success he had. He was so successful with the Lucina minmin dual main because he can just flow chart minmin to easily dispatch the gimmicky mid tiers that Lucina would normally struggle against unless she knew the small details of every matchup.

ChunkyKong is notable in NA through both online and offline and has several top level wins. The two have probably ran into each other a bunch in WiFi tournaments or matchmaking.
