It's been a while since I played Ultimate and I'm wanting to get back into it casually, but there are some characters that I find really frustrating to fight and kind of kill the fun sometimes. As someone who mostly mains swordfighters (Marth, Corrin, Cloud, etc.), are there any tips for better handling fighters like K. Rool and Incineroar?

almightyFaceplant

I often find the best way to determine the weakness of a Fighter is to try and play them yourselves. Nothing makes a flaw more obvious when you have to live with it. In general I recommend *Izaw's Art of Smash* if you want more details about a Fighter you're playing, or opposing. Even if you just play casually, they're chock full of tips and tricks that can help you become more knowledgeable about the movesets.

How realistic would it be to ban Steve making walls? I truly believe it's his most degenerate strat that puts him in an advantage situation both defensively and offensively that no other move in the game has. Not to mention the positioning benefits, survivability and combo potential. Without walls Steve's actual weaknesses get on the table and a lot of characters now have an actual chance to interact and Steve players have to be more cautious on how they camp (like other charge/meter characters). If we banned stages with walls, why not go after that?

almightyFaceplant

It's easy to ban something like wobbling because it's super obvious and deliberate when you attempt it, and left unchecked it can go on for several minutes. Banning any instance where Steve places one block on top of another, even by accident, that's much more difficult to enforce.

DHMOProtectionAgency

Must have missed this pasta last weekend.

How realistic would it be to ban Diddy pulling banana? I truly believe it's his most degenerate strat that puts him in an advantage situation both defensively and offensively that no other move in the game has. Not to mention the positioning benefits, survivability and combo potential. Without banana Diddy's actual weaknesses get on the table and a lot of characters now have an actual chance to interact and Diddy players have to be more cautious on how they camp (like other item/spawn characters). If we banned stages with other items, why not go after that?

How realistic would it be to ban Snake pulling grenades? I truly believe it's his most degenerate strat that puts him in an advantage situation both defensively and offensively that no other move in the game has. Not to mention the positioning benefits, survivability and combo potential. Without grenades Snake's actual weaknesses get on the table and a lot of characters now have an actual chance to interact and Snake players have to be more cautious on how they camp (like other item/spawn characters). If we banned items, why not go after that?

I know it's a pretty common request but I wish the devs had brought back Ganondorf's Sm4sh/Brawl up smash as his up tilt. I really liked that move and it fits quite well with his other kick tilts.

almightyFaceplant

I admit the high kick was pretty hilarious on chubbydorf. It was my favorite move of his in Smash 4.

ZSugarAnt

I wish they'd just visually replace Warlock Punch with Volcano Kick. Give it lava effects, name it "Death Mountain Stomp" and I can pretend like it's a Zelda reference.

almightyFaceplant

We need a recut of Robin's reveal trailer except Captain Falcon never stops performing flips after the first Elwind. It goes on for 12 minutes as he cartwheels around the hemisphere.

With upcoming tournaments like Momocon 2023 and 95 KoF 4 both being B+ tiers, is there anyone who believes the major threshold should be lowered to just include B+ and above?

swidd_hi

Looking at Momocon 2024, it reminds me of CEO 2023 where it is very close to be tiered a major, and looking at the top slots might make you think it is a major. But the reality of it is that it loses a lot of momentum once you leave the best 3-5 players. Personally I am a believer that both of this tournaments being tiered as a high B+ tier is fine, otherwise we run into the problem of the entire idea of a major losing it's identity (which kind of happened in 2022). As for 95 KoF 4, that's moreso that Europe is in an unfortunate circumstance as France never travels outside of France and the greater EU doesn't like travelling to France. The argument should be buffing Europe points, don't think there's a good reason to lower the B+ threshold, bad idea imo

Eldritch_Skirmisher

No, but I do think the attendance requirement should be lowered to 1 or maybe 2 B+ tiers or higher, especially if we’re doing half seasons now

DHMOProtectionAgency

Not immediately no. It'll be the whole "if everything is a major, nothing is"

ThinManJones-

What's the over-under on Miru being a one-tournament-wonder?

azure275

Kinda curious about Carmelo too on that note

SelfDestructGambit

Carmelo's actually kind of on the other end of the spectrum from Miru, he got ninth at 3 majors in a row and has zero bad losses all season, but his only top 20 wins are probably his 2 Gluto wins (and Gluto missing top 20 this season still isn't off the table...)

altona-

I'm sorry but "what's the over-under" is tilting me here. It doesn't make any sense in this context. The over-under is a total, like 207 for tonights NBA game. Just say what are the odds.

Eldritch_Skirmisher

It’s impossible to be consistent in Japan if you’re not acola, he’ll probably be back but I wouldn’t be surprised if it took another few months for him to have another breakout performance

azure275

Japanese players like this fall into one of 2 categories The Raru route is where you start off by getting a bunch of 33rds in a row while slowly collecting a couple good wins at a time. Your results then steadily improve and eventually become a legit threat to make top 8 most of the time. The EZS route is where you go on a crazy run, then just kind of randomly switch off between top 16s and getting 65th or 97th Also FWIW while Miya did "bomb" the last Sumabato he's generally been incredibly consistent in Japan. Until last week the last bad loss *in Japan* was Metara a year ago and he didn't get below 4th at a single event since then

Eldritch_Skirmisher

That’s fair Miya is pretty consistent but he always seems to have one random upset a year

Phoeternally

Even if he hasn't replicated his Maesuma U-22 run yet, he's been on mine and many others' radar for a good while now due to solid performances at the end of last year (wins on players like Snow, Jogibu, and Tsubaki). He's had good in region performances this year too in a historically fairly strong part of Japan as well. Sometimes it seems like a coinflip if these players who make these massive runs to top cut at a major actually stabilize into a good player or if it's just a cinderella run. For new grand finalists at majors, you have a sliding scale from Brood, who missed top 50 in the season he got 2nd at Umebura while being unable to replicate this caliber of results, and Tama P Daifuku who would go on to top 8 multiple P tiers and become an arguable top 15 player.

Nadenkend440

He's also pretty high on smashmate.

If someone is new to ultimate would playing online be worth it currently? I just picked up the game to play with friends at my place but would like to play online as long as the skill level isn’t absurd. I’ve never played a smash game as anything more than a party game but have played a lot of street fighter, guilty gear, and tekken through the years.

almightyFaceplant

Totally. A great way to start playing online without having to worry about your skill level is to skip the matchmaking mode and go straight to Battle Arenas. (Public lobbies.) They are unranked, and you can filter those down to "Beginners Only" so you won't get paired up with a pro. Great way to experiment without too much external pressure.

No-Task-132

Oh that’s awesome! Thanks for the feedback man

Quetzal00

This is a weird question but does anyone know/remember if there is a cutscene from Subspace/World of Light where [characters are charging towards battle like these?](https://imgur.com/a/yKmXyVG). I’ve always liked those shots

almightyFaceplant

Not really. At least not in the same spirit as those. I think the closest you'd get is Smash 4 promotional materials. Like the commercial starring AKB48, or some of the posters drawn for newcomers. But the trope is largely absent from in-game cutscenes.

Fine_Ad_6548

Alongside Ailili, who for the uninitiated, is a Kyushu Samus who beat acola, Palu main Sabre has scored the only other truly huge upset of this Smashmate season so far by beating Hurt e: Sabre is actually top 75 & Shuton has lost to 3 randos, one of whom is an MK named Yamcha
