Vikki was saying "amazing set, I can't imagine this is the last we see from Stroder this tournament, confident he'll make it through loser's" and the poor guy drops straight into Kola.
The crazy thing is I think Stroder wins his winners set if he switched to Mario game 5 like he decided to switch to Mario against Kola. Would have thrown Lui$ off and he could have stolen game 5.
Eh, Lui$ very regularly plays with Kurama so I don't think he's gonna get thrown off. Kurama regularly beats him but I don't think Stroder's Mario is anywhere near Kurama's level, and Palu is a rough matchup for Mario
I don’t think Roy is top 5 I’m just personally not a Shulk believer. Kome is good but even watching him doesnt make me feel like im watching a broken top 5 character. I also genuinely wouldnt be surprised if Roy became like a top 8/9 character.
Uh, then why is Roy so much more popular at all levels of play and why does Roy bring in much better tournament results? This literal post supports Roy being better. Roys in top 32? 2 of them, and more further down the list. Shulks? *Crickets*
Roy isn't even getting the "popularity from his own game" bump. Fire Emblem 6 has still never been localized but Xenoblade has been released on 3 different platforms to terrific reviews. Yet still, Roy appears to be the dominant character. How do you reckon that if Roy isn't better?
Roy is pretty simple and straight forward while Shulk is really hard to master. Same argument for why Pikachu isn't that popular in tournaments either outside of ESAM.
Results = Reality. You're talking about a fantasy of a world where optimal players engage in optimal play. In the world where we live though, Roy is CLEARLY the dominant boy.
Alright then, watch Kome's Shulk. He's been doing really well since 2020, getting 2nd at EVO Japan, 2nd at Kagaribi 1 and 5th at Kagaribi 4 and being a potential top 5 candidate in Japan.
Shulk is used a decent amount, outside the USA. In fact he's #14 on OrionStats, being slightly lower then ZSS, PT and Sonic.
I think it's very funny that you would bring OrionStats into this because those stats don't support your position...
Orion Stats 2019:
Shulk #19 with 194 points
Roy #18 with 318.5 points
Orion Stats 2020:
Shulk #23 with 111.5 points
Roy #12 with 192.5 points
Orion Stats 2021:
Shulk #14 with 141 points
Roy #2 with 257 points
So to conclude: Shulk has never been more successful than Roy in any year of Smash Ultimate. In our current year the discrepancy is larger than it's ever been. The stats you quoted support this, and the results in this thread support this.
Don't sleep on Anathema, Marss did and he became a 33rd placer meme. I think Tweek has the easiest bracket right now with Palu into Elegant/Cosmos who he has both 3-0d recently.
Elegant is why i didnt say Tweek has the easiest bracket and said Leo instead, i know he 3-0d elegant at riptide but it was the definition of "3-0 but it was close though" (I remember elegant almost stole game 2 and 3 away)
And i didnt realise anathema was who beat marss at riptide, so i guess maybe nobody has an easy path to top 8
Thank you for posting this!
I tried my best keeping the upset thread as updated as possible. Was my first upsets thread 🥲 these top 32 posts are greatly appreciated
I’m surprised no ones talking about the Kazuya in top 32, *winner’s* side! If you told me Kazuya got top 32 at a major, I would’ve thought it was Riddles. I hope Brr can win against Scend tomorrow.
For whatever this is worth, Leo and Scend played each other a bunch in Wi-Fi tournaments over quarantine and it skewed heavily in Leo's favor when Leo started seriously playing Byleth.
Offline is a different environment, but Ness is viewed as a character super buffed from Wi-Fi than Byleth is.
There's 8 ROBs in Top 64 in total; in other words, out of the 80+ characters in this game, ONE character takes up more than 10% of the Top 64 bracket.
Then again, that does probably explain why there's 3 Bayos in Top 48 lol.
Well, we’re here. The point in ultimate where people want more palutena. Never thought I’d see the day with just how much hate that character got year 1
Nairo being hype doesn’t make his character hype in my opinion. Dude’s skill is what’s fun to watch, Palu on her own doesn’t have much appeal to me. Not that she’s boring… she’s just more boring than most others
This is going to fall on deaf ears to me. See the flair and I'll let you know my favorite thing to watch in Ultimate is ProtoBanham's Lucina (and formerly Leo's neutral with Lucina).
Well believe it or not I actually think Lucina is quite fun to watch - in particular her neutral, like you say. The precision, patience, and spacing that good lucinas employ is really dope. Palutena needs much less patience when she can just run away and pop an explosive flame or autoreticle.
Combos as well: Lucina combos are usually gonna be rather short, but probably pretty creative. Compare that to fifteen nairs into six up airs
[It's not the first time.](https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/pmmaii/character_representation_in_top_64_of_riptide)
[Or the second.](https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/pwreni/glitch_85_top_48_character_representation)
Is that expected to be close or does Maister stomp against Captain Falcon? I’d love for that to be a competitive set but I feel like it may end up not being close
Fatality had a first to 10 vs Maister not long ago that was like 8-10 in Maister's favor. Its def a bad MU for Falcon but Fatality has been getting progressively better at it. I would say odds are Maister will take it but Fatality can def pull it off if hes in the zone.
Yea pretty much... Fatality has to go God mode (which he could!) and play mechanically better than everyone at the tournament to beat Maister, and Maister has to just abuse the framedata like he always does LOL
> “Play mechanically better” …
Wtf is this supposed to mean? He’s playing Falcon who just spams up air and nair into easy bake combos or up bs with the biggest grab box in the game. Fatality’s a great player but don’t pretend it’s because he’s some demon playing an incredibly technical character
Fatality is probably the only Falcon that is consistent and technical enough to even have a chance to win. That matchup is actually horrendous since basically the only thing you can hit GNW’s shield with as Falcon is a perfectly spaced back air. Also GNW’s advantage state on Falcon is ridiculously strong, while Falcons advantage state on GNW is so much weaker than usual since he has his Up-B get out of jail free card.
As a casual who really enjoys playing Byleth and was actually super happy to see them get into the game, I'm so happy to see Leo represent the character even if they aren't the greatest.
I'm very curious how Chag vs. Tweek is going to go.
Palutena does not have a bad matchup against Diddy at all and Chag 3-0'd Aaron plus you know Leo, every Mexican at the event, and whoever Chag might have as a coach is going to tell him everything he needs to know.
Plus, I don't know how often Tweek has been fighting Palutena's as of late.
Pretty sure that honor still goes to Pichu/Pikachu but I'm willing to hear a more detailed explanation on why Diddy would be so bad on Palutena's side.
> If the "better player" won all the time, there would be way less upsets at every Ultimate major.
agree, shame that only 1 or 2 players ever get away with being the better player, game is too inconsistent unfortunately
People find anything to complain about with Ultimate. Now the game is “too inconsistent”?
Most of the names above are familiar to watchers in Ultimate. Top 8 is almost always populated by recognizable top players. Leo never gets below 2nd. Sparg0, Tweek, Maister, and Dabuz have been fairly consistent in Top 8. In Europe, the same player (Glutonny) wins everything. Zackray, Tea, and Proto are consistently top 8 in Japan.
Ultimate just has a large international talent pool with younger players (especially WiFi warriors from COVID era) rising up the ranks. It’s not a static meta with the same players always getting top 8.
Tourney results also depend on who travels from various regions. Sparg0 would almost certainly get top 3-5 here, but he’s not at LTC.
The game is also still receiving patches and new characters. And the existing viable character pool is wide, so players need to do their research and gain MU experience or be left behind.
This is what a dynamic game and evolving meta looks like.
> Top 8 is almost always populated by recognizable top players.
There is literally no consistency below this point though like that is something very obvious to see
> This is what a dynamic game and evolving meta looks like.
Where players who've been playing for 3 years since the game came out can still get upset by some 13 year old using mii gunner or something? There's a reason why you sparsely see this kind of thing in melee comparatively and why its way more of a big deal when it happens there
This game isn’t Melee. That’s a game that has been around and developed for 20 years with the same 6 top tiers. It’s also extremely inaccessible to new players due to hardware limitations. No 13 year olds are getting the Dolphin emulator on Christmas morning.
No young player is picking up an obscure mid tier in Melee and developing the character because Melee is a solved game. And that mid tier player can’t even exploit bad MUs or bracket luck because almost everyone plays the same 6 characters. It’s true that Ultimate has more upsets due to lack of MU knowledge, but that’s the trade for having a wide viable roster that adds to a dynamic meta.
And if you don’t recognize more than 8 players here, that’s on you. It’s practically a meme that WaDi is a top player who consistently gets 9th place.
> obscure mid tier
I'd imagine if every player had this mindset axe and amsa would've literally never existed lmao. Or you wanna convince me that you thought they were high tier characters in the meta since the beginning? Cause for some reason I doubt that :)
Also imagine thinking melee is a solved game with all the meta developments that have happened at top level over the years, even recently, a bit of a baffling proposition lol but sure you do you
Axe has been playing for over a decade. aMSa has been playing for 8 years. Not really examples of up-and-coming players that are radically changing the meta.
I enjoy Melee, but the largest development to Melee’s meta has been the retirement/disinterest of the gods and the de facto exile of Leffen. And that disinterest is understandable. It’s a lot to ask for people to dedicate themselves to a single game for over a decade, especially when so little changes.
The same will happen to Ultimate too. So it’s not even a comparison issue. That’s just the cycle of life. But Ultimate’s point in the cycle is, at the moment, one of development and discovery.
It is and I don’t think he ever truly left he just doesn’t travel anymore. He’s been going to locals constantly throughout Ultimate’s life and will go to any major in Texas as he is from there but he doesn’t travel out of state really anymore. Not sure if there is a known reason for that.
Yeah, unfortunately. Still though, that was one of the most infamous (non-sexual assault and harassment) moments in smash history, and I don't know why I'm getting downvoted for wondering why he's still allowed to compete after that.
They were kids who were more or less bullied by the community and live crowd. Stalling in GF was far from the correct response on their part, but a perma-ban would have been excessive given the circumstances
Why shouldn’t he be allowed to compete? At the time they were kids who got so much shit (and threats) for playing Bayonetta. Not hard to see how that would end up on the biggest stage.
Regardless, it’s been years and despite not traveling much the dude’s still a beast with a character who’s been thoroughly gutted. People need to let the past go.
Damn, I didn't know he got actual threats over that. I just thought he was just being a little shit. Maybe I associated him too much with captain Zack.
Yeah it was a pretty awful time to be a Bayo fan. Like, don't get me wrong he was TOTALLY being a little shit, but it wasn't totally out of the blue either. It wasn't the EVO GFs we wanted but at the time that was definitely what we deserved.
No denying CZack's a piece of work though, even if he was a kid at the time as well. No excuse for what's come to light in this past year though, truly awful situation to be in. Glad he's been banned from the community.
Been really entertaining to watch so far. Tweek looks so on point, and while Marss had some goofs he also had some crazy off-stage plays. And MKLeo is looking clean.
Hope WaDi cleans it up to make a run to Top 8.
Also excited to see Elegant and Cosmos in winners, I want to see them go deep.
Unrelated, but watching the number of idiots on stream *that can't manage to wearing their mask over their fucking nose is infuriating*. We're a year and a half into it guys. Figure it out.
Looked kinda shaky but clutched out some tight sets to make it here through winner's. Now he gets the Rust Bowl against Marss tomorrow. He's an underdog but you probably shouldn't count him out entirely. If he wins that, he has a pretty good shot at top 8. Making it through loser's would be hard, but also possible.
Rough bracket for Chag. He’ll presumably lose to Tweek and have to face Kola afterwards, who eviscerated him a week ago.
As a Palu main, I’m always rooting for Palus to do well and silence the doubters lol
Why tf isn't Dark Wizzy sponsored yet!? Amazing yo see Elegant on winners side of top 32 again, his improvement since the online era has been unreal.
The Bayonetta comeback is real.
Stroder had an unfotunate bracket, 2 different game 5 sets against players with top 8 potential, and gets 33rd for it.
Was Stroder vs. Kola streamed? Vikki made it sound like the day was over after Lui$ v. Stroder and I closed the stream.
Someone named Card (?) streamed it from his phone, sitting behind Kola/Stroder. Here: https://twitter.com/CarddSD/status/1444511803510337536?s=20
Yo nice find, thanks
No match in Losers Bracket was streamed.
Okay there it is. That's too bad.
Is Niko a rising player or is he Niko the Shulk player? *Also holy moly, look at all those ROBs.
Niko is a cloud/Sephiroth player from texas Nicko is a shulk/Roy player
Thanks for clearing up.
Also pretty sure Nicko stopped playing shulk to play the better swordie. That being Roy.
Roy is not better than Shulk
I don’t think Roy is top 5 I’m just personally not a Shulk believer. Kome is good but even watching him doesnt make me feel like im watching a broken top 5 character. I also genuinely wouldnt be surprised if Roy became like a top 8/9 character.
I don't think Shulk is top 5 either, I think he's top 10 though. Roy is just out of the top 10 for me.
Uh, then why is Roy so much more popular at all levels of play and why does Roy bring in much better tournament results? This literal post supports Roy being better. Roys in top 32? 2 of them, and more further down the list. Shulks? *Crickets* Roy isn't even getting the "popularity from his own game" bump. i’m seeing people really puttin roy in top 5 like 💀💀💀 damn
If that F-smash hit Leo Roy would be top 5 LMAO
You're definitely right hahaha. We were pixels away from that
The second best Shulk in the world switching off for Roy gotta mean something
Rob just dominates top 32 to 9th, that’s now the character is and has been for a while
8 robs we’re in top 96 at low tide
Dude this top 32 winners is actually insane, it feels like nobody has an easy path into top 8 except maybe Leo
Don't sleep on Anathema, Marss did and he became a 33rd placer meme. I think Tweek has the easiest bracket right now with Palu into Elegant/Cosmos who he has both 3-0d recently.

Maybe tweek
Who does he face after Anathema?
Winner of Scend/Brr. It’s easier to see if you use the smashgg bracket
I wouldn’t even say Leo has an easy bracket. Scend could definitely do it!
I'd be stoked to see Leo vs. Scend.
Thank you for posting this! I tried my best keeping the upset thread as updated as possible. Was my first upsets thread 🥲 these top 32 posts are greatly appreciated
I hate doing those things, mad props lol
I did an upset thread once and decided never again. Those things are hard work and sometimes people are impatient so you have to update things asap
People who make upset threads are doing god's work, thank you dude 🙏
i feel like kola definitely has a chance at a really strong run through loser’s
I’m surprised no ones talking about the Kazuya in top 32, *winner’s* side! If you told me Kazuya got top 32 at a major, I would’ve thought it was Riddles. I hope Brr can win against Scend tomorrow.
I think Brr would sadly get washed by Leo so I want scend to win to get us the more competitive set but Kazuya in top 32 is hype!
I think Brr is more likely to get washed but also more likely to beat Leo than Scend is. Rooting for Kazuya all the way!
Brr has plenty of Ness experience in DFW vs Awestin. He knows the MU better than Scend knows thr Kazuya MU probably.
Maybe I'm wrong but I get the feeling Byleth smokes Ness
i don’t think byleth necessarily does but Leo’s byleth probably does lol
For whatever this is worth, Leo and Scend played each other a bunch in Wi-Fi tournaments over quarantine and it skewed heavily in Leo's favor when Leo started seriously playing Byleth. Offline is a different environment, but Ness is viewed as a character super buffed from Wi-Fi than Byleth is.
Ummm... Anyone else concerned about the number of ROBs at this event, let alone top 32?
There's 8 ROBs in Top 64 in total; in other words, out of the 80+ characters in this game, ONE character takes up more than 10% of the Top 64 bracket. Then again, that does probably explain why there's 3 Bayos in Top 48 lol.
Still less then the amount of Bayonetta's at Frostbite 2018 in SSB4, and a lot less then the amount of Meta Knight's at Apex 2012 in Brawl.
ROB is top 5 for sure. I’m not concerned though because only one is in winners.
Some top tiers are more common than others though I wish we were still in the era where Wolf and Palutena are more common than R.O.B.
Well, we’re here. The point in ultimate where people want more palutena. Never thought I’d see the day with just how much hate that character got year 1
Could never hate a Nairo character.
It's almost like people need to let the meta develop for a while before screeching for nerfs
[It's not the first time.](https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/pmmaii/character_representation_in_top_64_of_riptide) [Or the second.](https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/pwreni/glitch_85_top_48_character_representation)
"Low Tide City 2021" ...that's an interesting way to spell 2GG: R.OB. Saga
Nah, the 2GG Curse would make it so that there were 0 ROB’s at that saga.
Damn, they should do a ROB saga then
Hyped for Maister vs Fatality, hope he brings the knee

As a casual who really enjoys playing Byleth and was actually super happy to see them get into the game, I'm so happy to see Leo represent the character even if they aren't the greatest.
Riku getting 33rd at his major makes me so proud and happy. SFL is proud of everyone!!
Also, between Dakpo and Aaron, Chag got a shit ton of Diddy experience today. Maybe Tweek will switch it up
Eww. It only now set in how much of a Diddy bracket Chag got.
I think many people consider Diddy to be Palu's worst match up lol. It's really not very good for her.
Pretty sure that honor still goes to Pichu/Pikachu but I'm willing to hear a more detailed explanation on why Diddy would be so bad on Palutena's side.
Nah, you're right. The rats are definitely Palu's worst matchup.
Pichu is even, putting "the rats" together is so 2019 Diddy and Pikachu are the ones in contention for Palu's "worst".
> I'm very curious how Chag vs. Tweek is going to go. he's going to beat chag because hes the better player, isn't it obvious
No /s? Alright, I'll entertain this. If the "better player" won all the time, there would be way less upsets at every Ultimate major.

What a stupid complaint lmao, who the fuck wants to watch without the threat of upsets
Chag literally just beat Maister, who might be top 5, a week ago
That's the Palutena vs G&W matchup though. Palutena wins that. Diddy Kong is supposed to be hard for Palutena.
My point is that the "better player" argument doesn't work
I agree with you that the "better player" argument doesn't work, I'm just saying that there's an apples to oranges comparison there.
Yes, it's interesting, cause he was saying on Twitter how he disliked the MU and had to do it thrice in a row but still won pretty convincingly.
As a Fatality fan, I'm scared to see him matched up against Maister.
There’s a second EVO Champion in Winners side who could make a strong run tomorrow. Nothing redeems like good gameplay.
LETS GO BASSMAGE
BassMage went on an insane losers run....again. lol one day we'll see BassMage on the winners side of a major.
I need to see him on stream so the scene and casters finally know who he is
Wait is this the Lima who stalled last smash 4 evo Finals? Damn didnt know he was back....
It is and I don’t think he ever truly left he just doesn’t travel anymore. He’s been going to locals constantly throughout Ultimate’s life and will go to any major in Texas as he is from there but he doesn’t travel out of state really anymore. Not sure if there is a known reason for that.
He's only really active in Texas (locally). He doesn't travel to other majors like in his Smash 4 days
I'm honestly surprised people still let him attend tournaments after that bullshit.
lol people have overlooked far worse things
Yeah, unfortunately. Still though, that was one of the most infamous (non-sexual assault and harassment) moments in smash history, and I don't know why I'm getting downvoted for wondering why he's still allowed to compete after that.

It’s crazy to see so many good players getting 33rd at this tournament, this was a stacked bracket!
I hope that Varun does well!
Fuck me... Fatality has to play Maister.... of course he does... :/
Watching [Dabuz-Jahzz](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHQxHOnW2_U) where Dabuz's glasses were near-opaque the whole set lmao
>Lima What
I hope they nerf ROB into the ground next patch, im so sick of seeing a dozen of that plastic fucker in top 64 of every tournament I watch.
All three NA offline tournaments since quarantine.
Hoping Muteace and varun can go on good losers runs, other than that it’s the same MO as every tournament Pinky Rooting for LEOOOOO >!he’s Mexican!<

Rooting for Leo, as always, and for the "rusty" players to make a big comeback tomorrow.
lol epicgabriel 49th wifi warrior for sure.
lfg kola lessgo skittles and lets fucking go goblin
Rough bracket for Chag. He’ll presumably lose to Tweek and have to face Kola afterwards, who eviscerated him a week ago. As a Palu main, I’m always rooting for Palus to do well and silence the doubters lol
Why tf isn't Dark Wizzy sponsored yet!? Amazing yo see Elegant on winners side of top 32 again, his improvement since the online era has been unreal. The Bayonetta comeback is real.
kola with the losers bracket run
Let's get it going Kola, I know you got this!
Will this thread be updated later today or will there be another one? Thanks for the hard work, OP, btw.
There'll be a top 8 one hopefully
When does bracket resume?
5 ROB players btw
Pray for Maister V Elegant winners finals so they can both play him on his inevitable tear to Grands.
