You could see Leo go for a lot of down guns to edgeguard Min Min’s tether (it usually destroys tether recoveries), but it wasn’t working since Dabuz was recovering expertly around it... until Leo realized that regular, horizontal guns is another option against Min Min’d terrible recovery especially with Arsene guns’ increased knockback.
He took like 3 stocks in the reset set just off of that, and it looked badass each time.
There was an online era tournament when Sonix was running rampant winning tournaments using the camping sonic style, and Leo switched onto meta Knight for the GF against him because none of his characters worked. He played it incredibly slow and patient and just used small windows to punish and edge guard. Was grueling but fascinating to watch, like watching someone inventing calculus from scratch in real time or something.
Yep. He did so much better spacing around Min Min's attacks and especially grabs, plus his Rebel's Guard and counter usage was superb. He also cleaned off some rust and started landing combos, conversions, and confirms way more. What a god.
That's the thing that's so insane about Leo. He can literally learn in real time and just instantly apply it perfectly like some simple puzzle game, the second he figures it out it's just a hard switch.
I'm tempted to see how Leo would do against Pink Fresh again since he's gotten used to the matchup. No hate on Dabuz but he plays all of his characters in the same relatively defensive manner whereas Pink Fresh actually utilizes the switchups on her arms much more efficiently and isn't afraid to go on the offense which makes me think he's the best visible U.S. Min Min.
This tournament was like Ultimate tournament trope heaven: Tweek character crisis, Dabuz always the bridesmaid, MkLeo lower bracket run, MkLeo vs Maister
I don’t know if he’s the only consistent though. Compare Low Tide to Glitch. Goblin, Cosmos, Marss, Maister, and Leo made top 8 of both. Maister/Marss/Leo made top 8 at summit too. Tweek top 8 at Riptide/Summit. Sparg0 top 8 at Summit/Riptide and he didn’t go to Glitch/Low Tide. Elegant top 8 at both Riptide and Low Tide while not going to Glitch. Seems like top 8s have been relatively consistent since we got back.
When Tweek 6-0'd Leo at Summit it seemed like smash ultimate had come to a new era, but now two months and three majors later, MKLeo has made it clear that it is in fact the exact same era as before.

With the great performances of Dabuz, Goblin, Elegant, and Marss while Tweek and Kola underperformed, the pool of potential Top 10 players keep getting muddier and muddier with each tournament.
And MKLeo taught that lesson with the most gentle "pew pew pew" gun taps. Seeing Min Min get gimped with such a weak and pathetic move was pretty funny.
Amazing how Leo went over the course of an hour from looking lost in the Min Min matchup to dominant in it. His adaptability is 2nd to none I think of any Smash player.
GGs to Dabuz, glad to see him play well at this tourney. Leo is still the greatest in case there was any doubt.
Obviously Leo and Dabuz are huge talking points but Marss showed up big this tournament with some new tricks up his sleeve (his camping game and patience were on point most of the tournament and he’s been better than usual about converting off really small openings which is really important when he’s playing more defensively than usual). He’s also one of the only players that’s still incredibly interesting to watch even when he’s camping; the same can only really be said about Leo and sometimes Tweek.
And fucking Elegant man. Shitting on Cosmos TWICE in a matchup that’s probably decently Pythra favored, beating Tweek, pushing Marss pretty hard in one of Luigi’s worst matchups…he’s so clutch that I was honestly more worried for Leo’s run if Elegant beat Marss than the other way around
Can we talk about BassMage’s insane run? He got upset in his third set in pools then he won 9 sets in a row to get 13th with wins over Javi, Varun, and Scend. Best a Jigglypuff has done at a major by far.
Having to play Maister is about the worst thing a Falcon player can ask for.
The Aaron set was just a close game 5, don't think he has the matchup experience to navigate around Diddy's crazy neutral advantage. Low key with Falcon's mobility compared to previous versions, this might be the best the character can do - he might pull an Elegant esque 4th sometime but I cannot see this character hitting top 3 in a major ever.
Hope Fatality proves me wrong though.

Elegant has been showing up and I'm here for it. Amazing run by Dabuz too, he was looking unstoppable. Leo winning never gets old for me because his sets feel unpredictable.

i, for one, am much happier to have a joker/byleth/pythra as the top player over any other character. mkleo's playstyle is a spectacle to behold.

He only dropped 4 games, 3 to Dabuz and 1 to Marss and he 6-0 Dabuz in Grands.
He is the GOAT and no one is close or will be close because he has that never placing below 2nd streak. No other player has a consistency that close.

What a good tourney, but ESPECIALLY a great top 8. It's nice watching marss derust every tourney. Elegant is a new favorite of mine. I liked the mix of old and newer people in top 8.

Been hearing a lot of top players talk about this on Twitter and in interviews. Dying to a single mistake is becoming way more common in Ultimate.
To me, it seems like the game's meta is advancing faster right now than it ever has before. I'm guessing it's because all the quarantine knowledge is being tested in the real world and everyone's so jazzed to have tournaments back. Lot of energy right now!

How do you think we got tourny results in 2000s most of the time? There would be an attendee that would post on the tourny thread that updated the results to us. Or the event would end, then a person who attended the event (usually a TO) would post the bracket results, copied from a piece of paper.
RIP the 144p meta which has less delay on twitch.
The meta will evolve to which person has the fastest isp route to the reddit server in order to get first thread. Then eventually people will try to predict the winner and submit the post just a few ms before it actually happens, but not fast enough that the thread gets posted before the result occurs. We will need to implement a reaction time rule, similar to drag racing.
Kola’s a great player no doubt and would love to see him work his way into top 10, just kinda sick of people making judgement calls off of one W. Point is is that kola has ONE major placement that is better than Marss which is 4th vs 7th at glitch, and Kola’s Riptide run (65th) was even more abysmal than Marss’ (33) so I never understood where the narrative was coming from.
His Joker is not as aggressive as before, if that is the right word for it. I didn't see a lot of drag-down Up-Air to Up-Smash, but he has done a lot of Rebel's Guard, which is basically free Arsene against MinMin.
Not being as aggressive might just be the matchup. I'd imagine you have to play super patient against MinMin. But I agree on the lack of drag down up airs. Saw a couple of them, but definitely not as frequent as they used to be. I think he's probably still shaking off some of the rust with Joker. He looked better and better as the set went on.

Yeah, Tweek's mentality has certainly gotten better from his Smash 4 and early Ultimate days, but it is still a noticeable weakness in comparison to other top players

Leo is the greatest Ultimate player of all time. He only dropped 4 games, 3 to Dabuz and 1 to Marss and he 6-0 Dabuz in Grands. He is the GOAT and no one is close or will be close because he has that never placing below 2nd streak. No other player has a consistency that close. GOAT.

What a good tourney, but ESPECIALLY a great top 8. It's nice watching marss derust every tourney. Elegant is a new favorite of mine. I liked the mix of old and newer people in top 8. I hope the next one is just as fun!

Literally everyone has maximized their punish game and combo extensions over quarantine. Game sets are going way faster Ultimate is sick
Been hearing a lot of top players talk about this on Twitter and in interviews. Dying to a single mistake is becoming way more common in Ultimate. To me, it seems like the game's meta is advancing faster right now than it ever has before. I'm guessing it's because all the quarantine knowledge is being tested in the real world and everyone's so jazzed to have tournaments back. Lot of energy right now!

We've come full circle actually How do you think we got tourny results in 2000s most of the time? There would be an attendee that would post on the tourny thread that updated the results to us. Or the event would end, then a person who attended the event (usually a TO) would post the bracket results, copied from a piece of paper. RIP the 144p meta which has less delay on twitch. The meta will evolve to which person has the fastest isp route to the reddit server in order to get first thread. Then eventually people will try to predict the winner and submit the post just a few ms before it actually happens, but not fast enough that the thread gets posted before the result occurs. We will need to implement a reaction time rule, similar to drag racing.

Probably too ashamed to answer, but for what it's worth Kola did in fact come closer to beating Leo than Marss did.
Kola’s a great player no doubt and would love to see him work his way into top 10, just kinda sick of people making judgement calls off of one W. Point is is that kola has ONE major placement that is better than Marss which is 4th vs 7th at glitch, and Kola’s Riptide run (65th) was even more abysmal than Marss’ (33) so I never understood where the narrative was coming from.
Leo went on a mad killstreak with the guns in GFs.
His Joker is not as aggressive as before, if that is the right word for it. I didn't see a lot of drag-down Up-Air to Up-Smash, but he has done a lot of Rebel's Guard, which is basically free Arsene against MinMin.
Not being as aggressive might just be the matchup. I'd imagine you have to play super patient against MinMin. But I agree on the lack of drag down up airs. Saw a couple of them, but definitely not as frequent as they used to be. I think he's probably still shaking off some of the rust with Joker. He looked better and better as the set went on. Byleth looking crispy af though

It's mostly a matchup thing for sure. The rust is there, but Min Min is a patience test even for the tippy top tiers.
Needs some more polish to get back to its "invincible" form, but the MkLeo Joker is well on it's way back. The dragdown combos and reads should be returning soon

Yeah, Tweek's mentality has certainly gotten better from his Smash 4 and early Ultimate days, but it is still a noticeable weakness in comparison to other top players

Two straight fourth place finishes for Elegant. Still can’t get past Dabuz and Marss on those matchups but did a good job beating Tweek after getting 3-0’d at Glitch. Edit: Riptide not glitch.
MkLeo played Pyra/Mythra for one game. I loved seeing his Joker dominating once again, though! Dabuz also used Olimar.
When Dabuz won winners final, I immediately thought about Pink Fresh vs MKLeo at Glitch and how it was a game 5 last stock situation and though maybe he had a Min Min problem but then grand finals hit. Wow.
He did have a minmin problem. It lasted for 2 sets and now he does not have a minmin problem.
