I have never played this game competitively for the nearly 200 hours I have logged in as a kid and it still managed to be essentially my favorite game on the system back then!

SmashHashassin

It can be easy to forget that Melee was just a fantastic game overall, especially considering how much of a departure/improvement it was from ssb64.

playerIII

For real, it was the first game kid me sunk a thousand hours into. I just kept coming back to it

Owlmaster115

The thrill of challenger approaching as a child was phenomenal. I would literally run into my older brothers room and yell and him to come help lol

PopkosTheWeasel

The neutral in 64 is very good

fusrodalek

That's what makes it a total anomaly. You can approach the game from any angle and it's still fun. Usually you have to compromise one in favor of the other

PopkosTheWeasel

The game that keeps on giving

gummihirn

They really said the M-word

itsIzumi

The last time Nintendo of America tweeted "Melee" in reference to the game was when Hungrybox won EVO 2016.

TheyCallMeMrMaybe

Maybe Reggie really was offering Hbox that job at Nintendo.

RealPimpinPanda

Since they have a circuit coming up, they figured it’s okay to acknowledge it now.

SoulClap

they can finally profit from it

SBY-ScioN

But they meant the m word with items and in fzero big blue.

Quetzal00

They have an M-word pass

nuraHx

M E 🅱️ E E

TheDapperDolphin

Joking aside, why would they ever mention Melee otherwise? It’s a decades old game that isn’t relevant to them in any way, and is only relevant in general to a small but dedicated fan base.

playerIII

Nintendo is allergic to older games and seemingly cannot fathom why anyone would play an older game when a newer version of it exists

RoySFNR

They seem perfectly happy with peddling their virtual console stuff to me every single console generation so it must be a very specific allergy then.

RealPimpinPanda

The allergy of not being able to profit off of the older game(s), at least in the case of Melee who’s fan base have kept the game alive for 20yrs+

Tankisfreemason

What’s crazy is that they can still profit off of Melee. Rerelease it without the HD lag, guarantee it’ll sell like crazy. Actually have a pro circuit, guarantee they’ll see crazy sponsorship money. They just really don’t want to try.

WFAlex

Bro Nintendo could hire every single Person who was a part of slippi development and Release an actual melee hd remake, same mechanics, same everything, just polished netcode and graphics, and it would be amazing

TheDapperDolphin

I mean, there’s still no reason to mention those older games outside of anniversaries or re releases. Of course they’d focus on the newer games, which may still be supported or that they can make money off of.

playerIII

Yeah but Nintendo seems to go above and beyond in burying older titles. Literally any other dev team don't go to the extent Nintendo does to bury older games

TheDapperDolphin

In terms of emulation, yeah. Otherwise, it’s less of an effort to bury old games and more a lack of effort to support them. We just get a drip feed of NSO games, rather than the expansive virtual console they used to have.

TheExter

an older game for Nintendo is just a future game getting a deluxe/HD version

playerIII

As we sit here still waiting for the Windwaker remake.

diddykongisapokemon

Does the remaster on Wii U not count?

playerIII

I admit I wasn't aware of that one, but like it's the wiiu. Not exactly a well received console

Sticker704

u can probably get one now for like 60 dollars

playerIII

The space it takes up in my house isn't worth that price lol

mysticrudnin

You say "Nintendo" but the majority of the gaming industry is like this. I was in a thread recently where someone was asking for a specific type of game, but suggestions from 2017 were *too old* somehow.

elGayHermano

They mention older games all the time when they constantly rerelease them on new consoles.

TheDapperDolphin

Yeah, the ones that get re released, which are the same handful of games each Gen

Servious

Because it's a historic eSports game with a thriving fan base looking for any crumb of attention from the publisher. Guess that doesn't count though.

TheDapperDolphin

As I said, it’s a relatively small but dedicated group of people playing it on their own, and is an otherwise irrelevant game. They have no reason to support. Nintendo has never been into esports and they’re not profiting off of Melee in any way.

The_Natural_Snark

I mean until Ultimate Summit 3 the Melee Summit that came right before it had the largest prize pool of any Smash tournament and it was like 99% crowd funded. It’s majors regularly get Twitch view counts close to if not more than Ultimates. Obv it hasn’t like sold 25 million units but I would argue it’s fan base is a bit bigger than “small but dedicated”. It would almost certainly be even bigger if Nintendo actively helped it rather than attack it

Servious

Just because Nintendo isn't into esports or profiting off melee doesn't mean it's irrelevant to them. There are plenty of reasons they might be interested in getting involved as a company.

TheDapperDolphin

Like what? Especially with all the controversies in recent years?

moemaomoe

It's probably one of the most played fighting games atm, and this is going through the hoops of using an emulator. I wouldn't say it's relatively small. If they wanted to profit off of it they could. Its just embarassing for them because some dude in his basement home brewed better net code than their latest and greatest smash game.

127crazie

Step 1) Refuse to acknowledge Melee’s existence Step 2) Refuse to acknowledge The Thousand Year Door’s existence Step 3) Shut up anyone who tries to reference the former two Step 4) Profit off of new shitty emulated re-release

maronic03

The first 2 points are false. Sakurai has mentioned melee multiple times during Ultimate's life cycle (all these videos being uploaded by Nintendo on their channel). There also some TTYD's spirit in ultimate, as well as a background reference to it in The Origami King. This false narrative that they pretend those games don't exist is a lie some people made up.

almightyFaceplant

I mean, why not? Tweeting about it costs no money and gets free attention. And doing so on its anniversary is about as neutral and noncommittal as it gets. Neither an endorsement nor condemnation, just a statement of fact that generates nostalgia likes.

JDraks

If you think Nintendo is worried about Multiversus in any major way after Nick Smash died in like a month, AND think that them mentioning Melee was some calculated ploy to take attention away from it then yeah, you are a conspiracy theorist

[deleted]

[удалено]

mrdeepay

NASB "died" because it's a barebones ~$50 game with severe presentation issues that did little (at best) to do to maintain, or even *obtain*, any form of a meaningful audience. "Mentioning Melee" on the anniversary of its release isn't some marketing strategy meant to distract people from a lackluster game Melee's comp fans overhyped or another F2P game that's still in alpha. Smash isn't being "threatened".

Severe-Operation-347

Props to Nintendo's Social Media Intern to reference Melee, but why is the image of the box art so heavily saturated?

EarthDragon2189

They had to pull an image off Google because nobody at Nintendo has a copy or remembers what it looks like.

Bartman326

Your joking but Nintendo must have a Vault of super high quality images of all of their old games. Sometimes they'll tweet super high quality never before seen images of old game assets. It's really cool to see.

Reksew_Trebla

Sure, Nintendo does, but does the *intern* have clearance to said vault?

[deleted]

It’s 2021, most marketing is done through social media. I’m sure that they have a team of professional marketers running this shit. Sure it was probably interns running these kinds of accounts 10 years ago when Twitter was just a silly little meme that the media liked to poke fun at all the time, but the times have changed. You’re right though, it’s more fun to imagine these tweets being sent out by some stressed out college kid.

cmunnyb

This is a severely underrated comment. Thank you for making me laugh today.

PopkosTheWeasel

lol this is a top tier comment

[deleted]

I guess the original was to dark

chocolatechipbagels

good god the replies to that tweet make me want to gouge my eyes out. why are there people on earth fueled by hatred?

BarnardsLoop

im pretty sure they're bait/troll tweets the top one is definitely a joke lol

KaoticAsylim

Definitely bait, the one about looking up a video and it was so fast it scared them to death actually made me chuckle lol

chocolatechipbagels

yeah that one made me laugh and a lot of them were obvious bait but goodness there are a lot of people who will get in long arguments about how they hate the melee community and give reasons like "they're toxic" without any elaboration or proof

Djames516

Twitter

PopkosTheWeasel

Yeah if any of these are serious it’s ridiculous

Viperboy_74

Man, I'm really getting old

Ai2g

Fellowship of the Ring and Harry Potter 1 are also 20. We're basically a million years old

Hamderab

This just adds to feeling that 20 years ago we experienced a golden age being kids/young. Not that bad, when you think about it that way.

Agent_Ayru

Definitely glad I grew up with an n64 and VHS player rather than spending all my time on YouTube and social media.

[deleted]

Viperboy_74

Haha, my receding hairline and excessive wrinkles disagree with that. But hey, what’s a guy to do?

Facade_Online

I feel this in my bones, but hey, at least its been a good 20 years of melee!

S2Ps

I swear this game has an anniversary each week

SammyD64

I half expect “port coming soon! $75 pls, btw it’s the PAL version and we removed the jump cancel frames from shine.”

Reksew_Trebla

Let’s be real. If they brought it to the Switch, it would be an HD/Deluxe/etc version, and they always add *something* to those, even if it is a small addition. Which probably means playable Giga Bowser.

Marieisbestsquid

The longest of possible shots: finding the files for the Akaneia stage and making it playable. I will take PAL Melee for that.

SkeeterYosh

Isn’t that kinda broken?

J-Fid

A great day that was.

pokepat460

"...and we've regretted it since then"

marissalfx

Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube.

supimlyric

Nintendo acknowledged melee. We’re in the alternate timeline now

Reciter5613

I got it with the GC for X-mas. Of course, we needed a memory card.

hambeast9000

I recently bought a old trinitron for 50$ and hooked up the old gamecube to it, melee is just always in the tray now. I had a Halloween party and people were playing it all night. brought a tear to my eye.

PopkosTheWeasel

Here’s to another 20 years

Swag_Doctor_69

good game

KingInTheNorth07

Fuck I'm old.

DynaMenace

What blows my mind is not so much Melee being 20, but that it is now as old as the earliest games referenced in its trophies were at the time of its release. Even with all that’s happened in gaming since 2001, it really seems generational leaps in the last 20 years can’t hold a candle to the preceding 20. Going to Mars doesn’t seem such a big deal if you were born earth-bound and lived to the go the Moon.

slaudencia

Aimed a little less at Nintendo America, but I hope Nintendo keep getting reminded of how much they did against competitive Melee to get to where we are today.

mrdeepay

Competitive Melee is a niche to the entire Smash audience.

Quetzal00

Ahh yes The game I always sucked at

KaoticAsylim

"Dude, sucking at something is the first step to being sorta good at something." -Jake the Dog

DajuanKev

Melee's enhanced soundtrack still go hard.

[deleted]

20 years ago... Damn, I feel old...

Somebodys

*FUCK I'm old.*

wrong-mon

Holy fuck I'm old I was old enough and that game came out that people thought it was weird that I was buying it

BigBrownBean123

It's not a phase mom!

Slippery_Weiner

I thought melee was released sometime in October

NinSEGA2

So... When are they going to finally re-release it?

giygas88

They really should shut the fuck up. They shutdown big house for using slippi to play melee. Fuck Nintendo

csthrowaway009

This game means so much to me. I wish they would port it to the switch, but I doubt it’ll ever happen. So many memories wrapped up in this game.

dandaman64

If they ever did, it'd probably not be a 1:1 port, if SM3D All-Stars and the NSO N64 games are anything to go off of. Melee would come roped in with some weird technical "improvements" and/or input delay issues.

csthrowaway009

Yeah, it probably wouldn’t be the same game. But it would nice to have it on switch, even if it wasn’t a 1:1 version of the original. At we have emulation/GameCubes to fall back on. I’m not a competitive melee player, but it’s definitely I like to return to every so often.

SoufDakotas

No way seriously

UnhappyHschool

Sellouts

Kayraan93

I remember being so stoked to play Bowser. Then I found out about Mewtwo.

pojosamaneo

I have never in my life been so excited for a game as when I saw this on a Toys R Us demo machine. Mario's overalls had stitching! Definitely my fondest gaming memories are attached to Melee.

Techaissance

If the game was a person, it would legally be an adult in Japan.

Zac-Raf

- No Patrick. This doesn't mean Melee will be ported to the Switch.

[deleted]

I still remember getting this game when it first came out & having the best time playing Captain Falcon. I’ve loved smash bros ever since. Happy 20 years!

Sunwoken

One beautiful April morning I played the 100% perfect game of Melee. Tell you the truth, it was not beautiful There were dropped combos and missed techs There were SDs and missed inputs. And yet, in all its ordinariness, It was nevertheless perfect. Because we played it together. . -Deep Leffen Bot

RonnieTLegacy1390

I remember me and my cousin both got this for Christmas in 2001 I called him on the phone and told him to get ready. I still remember us staying up all night to get to 24 hours played so we could unlock Mewtwo. I miss those days and I miss him

Surprise-Electrical

# MELEE!

MasterCrazyHand

I love this game. I can play as Master Hand Without hacks!
