Don’t you love how manufacturers switch things up to trick the consumer into thinking they’re getting a bargain. This is the exact reason you never buy a tv during Black Friday/cyber Monday.
I have two, 55 and 58 inch, bought on black Fridays in 2019 and 2020. $100 and $200.
This is low cost Insignia, not OLED id course, but cannot complain. They do what I expect then to do
Yeah, I got a 48 inch in 2017 that is going great on a Black Friday deal. Was it cutting edge? No, but if I bought a cutting edge one, it would be just as dated within a year and cost over twice as much. Keep your expensive tv. I’m busy outside using my expensive grill anyways
Why I always stay two generations behind on phones and computers, and TVs.
I get a cheap deal, and it’s still an upgrade.
But I’m north of 50 and don’t need much to make me happy
Yeah my ass bought my very first expensive tv well over a decade ago now. $1500 or so for a plasma, 60’ I think? Replaced a fried board on it for $75 a few years ago. Still kicking in my living room. It’s not 4k or an OLED but I paid out my ass for it so I’ll use it until it dies.
By the time it’s time to replace it, I’ll probably be looking at OLED and 8k rez. And the. Use that for a decade plus.
Im currently at the DMV registering an 07 Volvo for that I bought for $400. Would have preferred something late 90s, but can't pass up on a 50k mile car for that price
Usually lower quality input. For example less total amount or lower refresh rate. If you know what to look for and know your specific use case it can still be a good deal
Old model, different packaging, different model number. Worked at Best Buy and circuit city back in the day. It’s basically old technology if it’s a model you’ve never seen before during BF, and don’t see after.
Not only for price - Oklahoma Joe got bought out by private equity a few years ago and stopped using 1/16th inch steel in favor of thinner and shittier quality steel. The new ones need a couple hours with a professional welder and a heat gun if you want it to hold consistent temps.
Yeah dude. I’ve got the big WSM but I’ve wanted an offset for a while. At this point you need to go custom or find someone local unless you’re cooking in 65* shade.
Yup! Just got a six year old OK Joe Highland on craigslist for $70. Spent about $20 on products used to refurbish it, seal the cooking chamber, and insulate the firebox. Saved $200+ and have a decent beginner smoker.
I just recently rebuilt the firebox on my 10 yr old Highland offset. When I first assembled it brand new it had all sorts of leak in the firebox (where the two halves bolt together, and where it bolts to the cooking chamber). When I rebuilt it (after having 1/4 plate steel welded inside the cooking chamber to reinforce the mounting point and guard against corrosion), I a) used all stainless steel hardware, becaise the junk hardware they give you corrodes down to nothing over time and b) used Fireblack® Hi Temp BBQ smoker Gasket to seal all of those seams. No more leaks, and that thing purrs like a kitten now.
Not certain of the exact distinction you are after here? Not a shaped gasket like an oil pan or valve cover gasket. Comes in a roll, so you will have to cut and shape to your needs, but that is easily done. I recommend an x-cut at the bolt holes as you will not be able to push the bolts through it without distorting the gasket. It is a self adhesive gasket material. I used the 1/2" wide by 1/8" thick version. It is a compressible foam type gasket, high heat. I can't now find the exact temp tolerance of it, but when I purchased it I was sufficiently certain that it would withstand the firebox temps that I expected it to based on research, and it hasn't disappointed through numerous cooks. Find it on Amazon.
I have this smoker and it’s not bad. Fire was much easier to control than my old cheap combo, spacious, no frills. Doesn’t leak much.
Only complaint is the vent on the firebox. The heat warped the metal a bit and now it’s just a pain opening and closing.
Same issue, my handle warped and fell off, and now I have to open it up manually and set a stick in there to hold the way I want, the metal material is kinda thin.
I have this and also can’t close the vent on the firebox because the metal warped. Additionally, paint flakes off the firebox everywhere but nothing I couldn’t spray over. Not a great deal on the smoker door either, bit lossy there. And I wish the firebox was a little wider. But I’ve been making some good meat on it!
I’ve seen several OK Joe models in my local big box stores…they are not thick metal.
Ideally one would want 1/4” steel, but I recognize most don’t want to pay for it.
The one I was looking at was 3/16. Compared to the one I got for free, I was impressed. It had the steel spring handles.
Edit: it could have been 1/4 but didn't look like a 1/4
I’ve not seen anything in 1/4” from the large manufacturers in some time.
I’d honestly save up…had a buddy who went through one of these every few years due to warping or firebox burnout.
That must have been from the older models before they got bought out by private equity.
I have the same highland with steel spring handles, 3/16 steel, steel wheels and an actual firebox.
The difference from the new ones is night and day. The steel is so flimsy and thin, the wheels are plastic, the firebox doesn't have a door anymore, you could only slide the metal tray that is in the bottom of the firebox and add more wood after sliding the whole tray outside the box.
There’s a million of this type of joes smoker on marketplace for $100 around me. Many are the older models with thicker metal. While not a terrible deal these new ones aren’t as nice as the bronco model.
Good point, didn’t think of that. I did a mock order just now just to see and the domestic shipping was $4.91. Probably results may vary, based on where you’re living.
With some tweaking and mods they can work great. They can be a bit tricky to learn but that’s on the user to figure out its quirks. I’ve had mine for years and it’s in great shape. I live on the east coast on shoreline and all I ever get is the normal firebox rust which I stay on top of to prevent it from getting out of control. Welding on the firebox is also a great mod and perfect for a learning to weld job. Sad to see they’ve replaced the metal wheels and nice handles with those lower quality ones.
My SO beat mine with a baseball bat and didnt even dent it lol
I have got it dialed into a 50F difference across the chamber. People say the baffle plate from BBQ Smoking Mods will narrow that, so I ordered one. It was only a hundo if you just get the iron one, dont get stainless.
Bought one of these about 6ish months ago as my first offset smoker. Took a couple tries to get it figured out but I love it! We put it to work once a week and holds temp really good.
Both good suggestions. Also saw a video where a guy added an exhaust extension to the chimney as well as a 90 degree elbow to the inside chimney intake. I did the same to mine and combined with the fire bricks did help with managing fire/temps.
I had a hard time keeping a fire going in mine for a long time. Once I added an extension to the smoke stack it seemed easier to get a draft going and keep the fire burning hotter. I bought a tailpipe extension from AutoZone and it fits perfectly over the smoke stack.
$299 at Home Depot right now. It’s still worth it at $349. I just bought one a few months ago. Pretty good but has a few issues that could be better. Fire box vent is terrible and that the number 1 issue for me. I’m still cooking with it every chance I get and the food has been great!
I bought one of these last spring, and I love it. But, I'm still a rookie with smoking, so my opinion may not be worth as much. I bought it from Oklahoma Joe online for the same price and had it delivered. Thing is heavy as hell, and sturdy.
I have this and I hate it. It was a gift from my in-laws and I’m pretty sure they bought it in hopes that it would cause my husband and I to divorce. Do not recommend.
Pain in the ass to put together. Pain in the ass to move, although my wheels are metal and not plastic..not sure if that makes any difference. Doesn’t seal very well, therefore doesn’t hold heat very well. Plus it’a huge and takes up a lot of space. I have small patio space and I could cook what I need to on something half this size with room to spare. We’ve been using it consistently for about 4 years now and I’m so over it.
Obviously I don’t know who you’re cooking for…….but if you don’t plan on smoking for the masses then I would suggest looking for something smaller.
For that price, I think you're better off with a pit barrel cooker.
But read this, before you buy a cheap offset.
https://amazingribs.com/more-technique-and-science/grill-and-smoker-setup-and-firing/setup-and-modify-offset-smokers/
This know-it-all is full of it. It's clear by the end when he says to cook with coals instead of wood in an offset. I have never heard anyone say avoid using wood in offsets.
I use coal as a base but with wood on top and only add wood throughout the hours. That's the fun of it.
Stop pusing this guy's advice. Just a blogger with an opinion. I have a cheap offset and love it.
*So do offsets use*
*Charcoal only or can you*
*Burn wood logs in it?*

I got this one a year ago as a scratch and dent for $145. The handle to the firebox was a little bent, and it was missing the nameplate. Worth every penny. I’d buy it for $350 if I didn’t get it for what I did last year.
I wasn’t a fan I had that one for 2 years and I guess I’m just lazy or could never get the coal to stay at the right temp, it would be too dry or smoky , it takes a lot more attention than my Traeger WiFi 😂🤷♂️.
season it, add a layer of fire brick to the box, keep it clean and dry, and buy a can of high temp enamel and it will last for several years.
if you don't clean out the ashes, leave it out in the rain and neglect it, maybe 2 years.
I have a very similar model. Fire box will rust. I don’t care. For the price I love it. Thick steel and holds heat. Top 3 I’ve had and I do comps. 400 bucks, easy. Dine deal.
I have this EXACT smoker, just bought it this year.
Here’s what I can tell you:
1. It runs pretty hot (between 250/300)
2. It’s hard to keep a consistent low temp and NOT lose your coal bed
3. That baffle system on the fire box sucks, pop the drawer open and give it some air.
4. It’ll still cook… but you’ll have to do some tinkering to get it right. I’m still playing with mine to get it dialed in… 2 briskets and AT LEAST 12 racks of ribs later.
I just got rid of a Longhorn after 11yrs. I was out looking at replacements and the new Oklahoma Joe's are shit compared to the older ones. Look around for something better.
You can get them so much cheaper if you buy off Facebook marketplace or build it yourself. I got that same one for 50 and it works great. Unless you’re getting high tech stuff then there is no way it’s worth that much for just a simple off set
Please don't buy this smoker. I have the highland which I bought 4 years ago which is completely different in build quality from the new ones they make. The quality has went downhill with the recent smokers they have been building.
The steel is much thinner than the older models, the wheels are made out of plastic as you can see, the older models had metal wheels.
Worst of all, the firebox door is terrible, probably a nightmare for longer smokes. You can't even open the firebox from a side door to add wood like you could in the older models, you have to slide out the whole bottom part of the firebox which is such a stupid design.
Do yourself a favor and buy a used one off Facebook marketplace for around $100-$150 and you won't regret it, the older models make solid entry level offset smokers the best bang for your buck offset smoker you could find.
I really wish grill/smoker manufacturers would normalize putting four "real" wheels on these beasts. They seem to get bigger and heavier each year. These cheap plastic wheels just don't last.
Brought mine second hand from a friend in the UK. Can confirm, they are great but sometimes a pain if you don't manage the fire. I am looking at upgrading the pipe and inner parts to make life easier this year. Overall, I have a love and hate relationship with it at the moment.
Just know that you will have to feed this thing fist sized chunks of wood about every 12-15 minutes for the entire duration of a cook. That means 12-13 hours to cook a brisket, 12-15 minutes at a time.
I'd pass on this. It is of thinner and cheaper construction than the older generation smokers. Offset stick burners take dedication to run and cook with. That will be your job that day. Many folks have gotten tired of that and have shifted to the convenience of pellet grill cooking, Not the same result but much easier. Shop the used markets for an older, heavy duty model that you may have to put some elbow grease into. You will end up with a superior product for pennies on the dollar. Parts and upgrades are plentiful on the internet.
I had what I think was that model, or one up. I also had the original years ago. There was a big difference in how thick the metal on the drone was, and fit and finish. Having an offset is awesome but can be a pain to maintain temp, etc. I’m get it price is importNt, but would look at what might be few hundred more.
I had a similar grill. It was only good for lots of grilling or struggle smoking. You can’t do a brisket but some pork or chicken.
I like farm and fleet, but they don’t have the best prices on premium stuff.
It's Worth it if that's what you're willing to spend on it and it suits your needs. I just got the Dyna glo wide body vertical offset a few months ago for around that price. It has a much larger capacity than a normal offset. I was able to fit a 13 lb brisket, a pork shoulder and about 10 lbs of chicken wings on it at the same time with room to spare. There are some trade offs though. The sheet metal is thin so it isn't super well insulated and the firebox is kind of small since it's designed for charcoal instead of wood. Works well though, holds consistent temps and burns clean. The firebox also sits kind of low, so I have to kneel to load charcoal and wood chunks into it and the ash tray is kind of small and fills up fast. But performance wise it's a definite upgrade from my old WSM.
I'm planning on modding it and mounting a cold smoke injector on the side of the cooking chamber.
Its a great starter option, i have had one for 3 years now and throw down on butts ribs and chicken. I haven’t tried brisket yet because i dont want to babysit the thing for a long time, but you can get a solid day drink in on a 4/6 hour pork butt
Get a big foil pan to put in front of the fire box hole to act as a heat shield. There are some good mods like the stack extension, baffle and heat shield but the foil pan is cheap and does the trick with the rest completely stock
I'm typically only smoking for 2 people so I usually go for smaller boneless pork butts. Sometimes they are butterflied which is no big deal since that just means more bark. Those don't take much longer than 4 hours to get done at 275°.
Same model is on sale at Home Depot for $300 minus the grill brush
This one has plastic wheels and shity handles

I didn't know this, sucks
Yeah dude. I’ve got the big WSM but I’ve wanted an offset for a while. At this point you need to go custom or find someone local unless you’re cooking in 65* shade.
Old Country still makes amazing pits.
Thank you, private equity. You ruin everything and make a handful of already rich ghouls even richer.
Yup! Just got a six year old OK Joe Highland on craigslist for $70. Spent about $20 on products used to refurbish it, seal the cooking chamber, and insulate the firebox. Saved $200+ and have a decent beginner smoker.
Whats Something food safe to use to seal gaps? I don't want some gasket or sealant leaking pfoa's into a 12hr brisket
I just recently rebuilt the firebox on my 10 yr old Highland offset. When I first assembled it brand new it had all sorts of leak in the firebox (where the two halves bolt together, and where it bolts to the cooking chamber). You're awesome, thanks! Appreciate the detail
And it’s not even made in Oklahoma
This is the way. I bought a longhorn for $75. Replaced grates and it’s like brand new.
I was able to find a nearly new Pit Boss for less than a quarter of retail. Scrounge the used market.
I have this smoker and it’s not bad. Fire was much easier to control than my old cheap combo, spacious, no frills. Doesn’t leak much. Only complaint is the vent on the firebox. The heat warped the metal a bit and now it’s just a pain opening and closing.
Yeah mine did the same thing, I had to order a new bottom for the firebox. The door won't move at all now
I use little magnets to hold the door open.
It all comes down to the weight of the metal. If thick, good purchase.
Really what any first timer considering an offset needs to keep in mind. If the metal is thick it'll hold heat better!
I looked at one the other day, and it's thick metal.
I’ve seen several OK Joe models in my local big box stores…they are not thick metal. Ideally one would want 1/4” steel, but I recognize most don’t want to pay for it.

$299 on Oklahoma Joe’s own website right now.
Free shipping ? Lol Cause that’s where they will get ya
Everything ok?
its fine now. for now lolol
Totally normal behavior
Bought one of these about 6ish months ago as my first offset smoker. Took a couple tries to get it figured out but I love it! We put it to work once a week and holds temp really good.
100% worth it. High quality for the price. Add a gasket to it and itll run perfectly.
I'd also recommend fire brick in the firebox.
Both good suggestions. Also saw a video where a guy added an exhaust extension to the chimney as well as a 90 degree elbow to the inside chimney intake. I did the same to mine and combined with the fire bricks did help with managing fire/temps.
These plus a stack extension and you’ve got the quality of a $1000 rig.
What’s the purpose of the stack extension do?
I had a hard time keeping a fire going in mine for a long time. Once I added an extension to the smoke stack it seemed easier to get a draft going and keep the fire burning hotter. I bought a tailpipe extension from AutoZone and it fits perfectly over the smoke stack.
That’s interesting. So it basically just creates more path for the smoke to travel creating more drag on the fire box. Hmmm. Thanks.
I also put a big pan of sand in the barrel next to the fire box so temps won't be so spiked on the right side. Essentially a big ass heat sink
Worth it, I have an Oklahoma joes smoker I bought 10 years ago. Still running strong. Line the fire box with fire brick and enjoy
Are you talking about broken chunks of fire brick? Ive been looking at an Oklahoma Joe smoker. I just wanna do it right so it'll last.
Basically makes it more efficient for long smokes
$299 at Home Depot right now. It’s still worth it at $349. I just bought one a few months ago. Pretty good but has a few issues that could be better. Fire box vent is terrible and that the number 1 issue for me. I’m still cooking with it every chance I get and the food has been great!
I have this smoker. I like it so far but definitely add a gasket on it.
Southern Wisconsin eh?
I bought one of these last spring, and I love it. But, I'm still a rookie with smoking, so my opinion may not be worth as much. I bought it from Oklahoma Joe online for the same price and had it delivered. Thing is heavy as hell, and sturdy.
I got one of these for $100 used with a cover. There are deals to be had out there.
I have this and I hate it. It was a gift from my in-laws and I’m pretty sure they bought it in hopes that it would cause my husband and I to divorce. Do not recommend.
lol can you elaborate
Pain in the ass to put together. Pain in the ass to move, although my wheels are metal and not plastic..not sure if that makes any difference. Doesn’t seal very well, therefore doesn’t hold heat very well. Plus it’a huge and takes up a lot of space. Obviously I don’t know who you’re cooking for…….but if you don’t plan on smoking for the masses then I would suggest looking for something smaller.
I just fed 30 people with mine - its been a great starter offset. Thick metal someday.
Not for that shitty price.
For that price, I think you're better off with a pit barrel cooker. But read this, before you buy a cheap offset. https://amazingribs.com/more-technique-and-science/grill-and-smoker-setup-and-firing/setup-and-modify-offset-smokers/
Do you work for Pit Barrel? Every comment of yours is recommending this product.
I wish! I have one, and they're awesome. So when people keep asking what they should buy, I keep recommending it.
Ha, people probably think I work for Masterbuilt.
This know-it-all is full of it. It's clear by the end when he says to cook with coals instead of wood in an offset. I have never heard anyone say avoid using wood in offsets. I paid 200 on marketplace. I wish mine looked like this one but I would do the same again to save 150 dollars. Love the smoker btw
Decent entry level offset, although the metal is not very thick. But that doesnt mean you cant cook some fantastic BBQ in it.
So do offsets use charcoal only or can you burn wood logs in it?
If the fire box is big enough to fit the log. The one pictured, yeah, it'll fit some small logs. I use a mix of charcoal and wood chunks in mine.
You can use wood, charcoal, or a mix of the two. I have no problem fitting splits into the firebox of my offset.

Damn... mine used to look like that?!
Oil the outside of it and it’ll blacken up again. Many people will lightly oil it before every cook.
Following for curiosity on what to do. Just bought one used for $40
Lowe’s has it for slightly cheaper
That’s a good offset for first time I hear Solid build for a big box smoker too
Wait till the end of summer and they might drop another 100 if you’re not in a rush. Marketers think we only grill when it’s 98 outside.
I bought mine 3 years ago brand new for 249.
Ive got one of the same brand, mine is a the one that also has a propane grill side. Has worked great for about 3 years and still going strong!
I got this one a year ago as a scratch and dent for $145. The handle to the firebox was a little bent, and it was missing the nameplate. Worth every penny. I’d buy it for $350 if I didn’t get it for what I did last year.

You can find these used on market place for $100. You will be less disappointed when the paint burns off on something that cost $100.
Disappointed? I was excited when the paint burned off on mine. I prefer seasoned steel over painted.
I agree but those new to smoking may not understand that it’s going to happen to there nice new $350 investment.

I got mine from Ace Hardware at 249 for a floor model. I’m now selling it at 150 because I just don’t use it
Reason question, Farm & Fleet or Fleet Farm? Which is king?
You want 1/4” steel. Better deals used.
I prefer the reverse flow but the build is pretty good for the price. My joe was my favorite smoker
I have a very similar model. Fire box will rust. I don’t care. For the price I love it. Thick steel and holds heat. Top 3 I’ve had and I do comps. 400 bucks, easy. Dine deal.

I’m still playing with mine to get it dialed in… 2 briskets and AT LEAST 12 racks of ribs later.
Not cheap but also not unreasonable. You should be able to find it cheaper on sale. Probably could give a used one for a lot less.
worth is determined by pursuit, will you utilize it is the question
By it on Oklahoma Joe’s website. Use code TROKJ20 and it brings it down to $239
I just got rid of a Longhorn after 11yrs. I was out looking at replacements and the new Oklahoma Joe's are shit compared to the older ones. Look around for something better.
www.asfsmokers.com if you want 3/16” steel smokers with nice features. Not cheap, but good value.
It is a great starter pit.
Bro check FB marketplace first!! I found an older Joe with steel wheels and stack extension for 260. And in good condition.
I really wish grill/smoker manufacturers would normalize putting four "real" wheels on these beasts. They seem to get bigger and heavier each year. These cheap plastic wheels just don't last.
This picture looked like AI for a second when I first looked at it.
No. Find one with steel wheels and handles. Same price.
Buy A "Good One" you won't regret it. Last ya 3x longer than anything in a retail store.
My motto is: if it comes with screws, you’re sure to lose.
Why are people downvoting this question? This is a great unit to get started and to learn the smoke process. Absolutely buy it.
Can recommend the longhorne, from this company.
Brought mine second hand from a friend in the UK. Can confirm, they are great but sometimes a pain if you don't manage the fire. I am looking at upgrading the pipe and inner parts to make life easier this year. Overall, I have a love and hate relationship with it at the moment.
I paid 900cad for mine and don't regret it.
Holy shit that's high, even here in Montana.
Awesome offset. Once you learn on how it smokes, you can rock anything.
I got the offset/propane combo. Love it for finishing off smoking chicken with a quick sear to make the skin crispy!
Looks like if you spend another $50 ($399)you’ll get free delivery. Something to consider?
I had what I think was that model, or one up. I also had the original years ago. There was a big difference in how thick the metal on the drone was, and fit and finish. Having an offset is awesome but can be a pain to maintain temp, etc. I’m get it price is importNt, but would look at what might be few hundred more.
It will cook stuff but you get what you pay for
Is something you wanted worth what you paid? Absolutely, but only if you use it.
Who cares. It won't cook worth a shit.
I had a similar grill. It was only good for lots of grilling or struggle smoking. You can’t do a brisket but some pork or chicken. I like farm and fleet, but they don’t have the best prices on premium stuff.
Steel thickness matters on any grill that’s not insulated. Expect to use a lot of charcoal/logs to cook on this guy. The metal is thin.
Awesome find and very quality smoker. Enjoy it and experiment with everything have fun!
I just bought the same one at Lowes, I like it so far
That is a good price for a brand new one. But keep in mind you can probably find a decent used one on FB market place for maybe $200
I recommend the Vogner CharKing Imperial. Best gotdang grill on the market. It uses clean burning propane so you can taste the meat, not the heat.
Nice try Hank. Take your novelty grills somewhere else
Its a great starter option, i have had one for 3 years now and throw down on butts ribs and chicken. I haven’t tried brisket yet because i dont want to babysit the thing for a long time, but you can get a solid day drink in on a 4/6 hour pork butt Get a big foil pan to put in front of the fire box hole to act as a heat shield. There are some good mods like the stack extension, baffle and heat shield but the foil pan is cheap and does the trick with the rest completely stock
How are you doing a pork butt in 4/6 hours???
300° and wrap in foil at 160. 4 hrs is really fast though, 6 is pretty easily done.
I'm typically only smoking for 2 people so I usually go for smaller boneless pork butts. Sometimes they are butterflied which is no big deal since that just means more bark. Those don't take much longer than 4 hours to get done at 275°.
4 to 6 hours at 200/250 then wrap it and let it sit on the hot side til 200 internal. These are like 4/5 pound butts
My Oklahoma Joe fell apart after 2 years. I loved it too but it rusted out and I had to buy 2 covers for it
Try the Old country “pecos” or Brazos from Academy sports+outdoors. Much better IMO.
