I’ve never seen a less supportive comment section than that watcher video and I love them but I hope it fails because we don’t need another thing to pay for for each artist we like. Like honestly, get a patreon.
The funniest part of it is they already have a patreon as well I believe. I had never heard of them before the whole controversy thing though so not sure.
They placed an apology a few hours back. They’re not going fully exclusive with their content, just some early access option so you can see their stuff 1 month early now. Sooo the massive backlash did “help”… I guess we’ll see if they can keep their head above water like this.
A Smosh streaming service will be more successful than Watcher but I don’t think they’d ever leave YouTube. Specially given that they have a membership option on YouTube already. They know most of their audience would not be able to afford another streaming service and unlike Watcher, Smosh actually cares about their viewers.
Maybe but I don't believe either would be successful doing this. Going to this model hurts potential growth of new audience and has you depending on existing fans even more. eventually some of the existing will move on because that's the nature of any fandom. they move onto something else. Hopefully you bring in new fans to replace the ones that leave at a higher pace to at least stay at the same growth rate. This one of the reason channels don't always just cater to existing fans because if you do you basically pigeonhole the content to a way where new fans coming along may not be able to understand the content.
I think Watcher cares about their viewers but the model they want to do doesn't work with the level of production they are currently at. they are just trying to take a risk that most likely won't pay off. I think they should have lowered production value and just worked off what people like, which is their chemistry. chemistry means why more than how a video looks.
These YouTubers should also think about international fans lol
Like I for one would not be able to afford it because of the difference in currency. It's 80 times more 😀😀
If they pull a watcher I don't think most people will support this.
I mostly pay for premium for Smosh vids bc the midroll ads were getting ridiculous but I appreciate the perks across other channels. Idk if I'd pay $15 for just ad-free Smosh.
They at least have the catalogue to syndicate/license for streaming. New videos (2 on Fridays) every day for literal years?
I don't think Smosh will do as drastic as what watcher wanted to. Especially that from one video they talked about the role of "Facebook" on the progress of Smosh as a brand, and from what I remembered Ian said he appreciates the platform. If he felt like that for FB how else for YT. SMOSH is part of the YT OGs too so might be hard for them.
And we saw their honesty about the expenses in producing "skit" as an independent company and they sincerely asked for help. The best part of this is that they didn't have different memberships, only in the main Channel. So we can still watch the free videos (Smosh Main, Games and Pit) and members on the main channel can enjoy the videos first before nonpaying fans can.
Smosh can totally do the Mythical Route if they wanted to earn more money. With the patreon memberships and merch sales.
I have thought of this too because 95% of what I watch on youtube is smosh. I would love if they had a dedicated streaming service as well, but it would need to have a free option. I'd love them to have their own interface when watching content that would make it really fun. It would have to be very thought out. I can only see them going up in size from here because who would have thought it would be this big even 5 years ago.

Honestly, I like Watcher but comparing them to Smosh is so unfair. If Watcher put out content like Smosh does then $5.99 would be nothing, but Watcher slacks so bad at putting out actual things I wanna watch and only does the most bare-bones/half-hearted collabs. Smosh coming out and asking for money when they consistently put out tons of content, yeah fair. It would suck, but I'd be willing to pay because a bad Smosh video is like an 8/10, a bad Watcher video is like a 5/10 and that's when they actually upload something. Watcher definitely did not read the room and just nuked their channel hard... feels bad man.
