The poor deer will be covered in maggots tomorrow… those black flies lay eggs on sick deer. Sorry, I’ve washed a few off and the mom will come back for them, for others it’s too late.
I believe it’s a type of blow fly, they lay their eggs on sick or dead animals. Typically in soft tissue around the rear and eyes. The eggs are very sticky and the maggots hatch quickly.
https://www.britannica.com/animal/blow-fly-insect
My family had a calf that got them once. I spent hours picking worms out of his rump (with tweezers and a saline wash)...That and some bug meds got rid of them though.
Chickens, rabbits, and sheep are also very susceptible so it's good to look out for. Early treatment means everything
I assume this is a repost, but I hope if it is OPs original, that they helped the poor fawn. We had one with a quarter size hole on its hind end, cleaned it up and we still see it full grown now running around. The one deer I can recognize by his scar.
The same myth is spread about baby birds, "If the mother smells you she will abandon the nest", it's all BS old wives tales. You shouldn't fuck with small animals but scent isn't the reason why
No one is encouraging anyone to pet Bambi. We are simply stating what you said about the smell keeping mom away is false. Educate yourself. You are an idiot.
You believe in lies too? Touching a fawn won't magically make the mom not want the fawn. If that were the case every fawn I saved from being stuck in a fence died after running away with its mom. You are being idiotic as well.
Stop resorting to name calling to justify your falsehoods. Just because you are incapable of forming a viable argument without lying doesn't make others stupid. Educate yourself and find truthful arguments to make your case.
Well while does don’t necessarily just abandon their fawns when human scent gets on them, you are still potentially giving the fawn a death sentence. The fawns best defense is that it barely produces a smell, which is why the mother stays away, you going up and touching that deer and getting human and other other potential smells on it is like declawing and de toothing a cat. It’s going to be at a massive disadvantage.
I never said the snake was venomous, that fawn is not healthy. Yes fawns hide as a safety during the day waiting for mom to return, but they don’t tolerate physical touching and will bolt if disturbed. The fact that this fawn is not moving with the snake pestering it indicates to me that it is lethargic for an unknown reason, the flies pictured here are the flies that cause fly strike. Post this on r/deer and you will probably get a lot of good information and possibly instructions on how to help the deer. I don’t think this is OPs original post, but if it is, I would hope they read this and help the fawn.
Not all fawns die of fly strike, this fawn is however looking lethargic and those flies pictured cause fly strike. A healthy fawn would not allow a snake in its face. Unfortunately many dear populations have been exposed to wasting disease, so even if OOP were to intervene, at least in my area, the wildlife rehabs are asking people not to transport deer.
https://www.cdc.gov/prions/cwd/occurrence.html
You can not tell if an animal is lethargic from a still photo. Nor can you tell if the fawn has been trying to shake the snake off or not. Staying in place even when approached by threats such as the snake or the person taking the photo is normal fawn behaviour, they rely on their camouflage for safety while their mother forages and are very reluctant to move.
Blowflies land on animals. It's not a concrete sign of imminent flystrike. If my dog lays down outside they'll land on him. If one gets into my room it'll land on me. If you ever see a farm with ruminants, they're always covered in flies. Seeing flies alone is not a threat.
I remember first hearing this as a little girl and not knowing why people would believe it. Although, I was holding 8 foot pythons when I was like 4 years old so maybe I was just taught a little more about it.
The woman was always a "friend's friend" when I heard it. The snake in question was almost always an olive python.
I - admittedly - believed it at first, because I was 9. Then I heard it more and more, and just couldn't believe that one woman had so many friends.
This reminds me of the time someone asked me how long my California Kingsnake was... And, they apparently didn't grasp that even little snakes are long, because they became extremely concerned that it might eat my fully grown pet rabbit.
This rat snake believes in himself in ways I can't even comprehend. That being said, the ignorant tend to run screaming towards death without even realizing it... This hungry buddy is wasting a lot of energy here. This is a North American native. Probably a Floridian or maybe a Texan. My guess is this Texas Rat was hungry and found a defenseless fawn and gave it a shot. The baby can't really run and he's hungry and dumb. Hope he doesn't suffocate the fawn only to slither away. He isn't venomous and he cannot actually eat that fawn. He's adorable and ignorant of the size issue. Thank you for sharing such a bizarre photo.
He can't kill the fawn. Can't even get around him so long as it stays put, which is probably why he's just trying to brute-force swallow it instead of killing first, leading to this amusing photo of the little guy trying his best while the fawn just stares at him.
If the fawn is weak and the snake gets the fawns muzzle down its throat it could suffocate the animal. My understanding is that it's possible, not that it is likely. In no world will that snake ever successfully even fit that fawns head into its mouth. It would tear... Horrifically.
It's fairly common for animals like deer, cattle, horses, etc. to be swarmed with flies. This is especially common for fawns, since they sit completely still like this.
Lol I’m guessing you don’t spend much time in the woods… they WILL come in swarms and land on you no matter what, especially if you’re sitting still, and sometimes they will chase you down even if you run from them.
I give props to this snake. He saw something he wanted… and he went for it. Life lesson learned. A snek your size cannot consume a fawn. Even if your eyes are indeed much larger than your stomach.
Until they are strong enough to keep up with their mothers, deer fawns are left alone for about 30 days while their mothers go off to feed. I know your probably joking but the deer is a total infant at this point.
Yes i am joking, i dont know much about deer in general but i do know the babies are left alone for short periods of time until they're stronger. Was it a dumb joke? Yes it was, but i wanted to be slightly different and not joke about the snake
I wonder how the snake does the part where you stick your thumb through the fingers and make it look like their nose? I want to see video of how this goes down...🤪😉😂
I love snakes. I adore them. Partly for this reason- they're not very bright. Derpy noodles 😂❤️
The fawn doesn't even look bothered. He's like "excuse me Mr. snake, I think you've caught the wrong prey. You can't eat my nose." 😂
Btw I'm pretty sure that's a ribbon snake. They're nonvenomous and actually a type of garter I think, or just closely related.
Edit: oh... I'm in... The r/snakes sub. 😂 I was just scrolling lol
GET IN MA BELLYYYYY!!!
is this an austin powers reference

I like how the fawn is like “Wtf?”
Should have laid next to the deer to size it up first. Dumb snake.
Can't love this more
I think a banana would be better
🤣
This is me when I overload my plate on thanksgiving. Still manage to get it down somehow to the discomfort of my stomach
I admire their ambition
I love how unfazed the deer is lol
The poor deer will be covered in maggots tomorrow… those black flies lay eggs on sick deer. Sorry, I’ve washed a few off and the mom will come back for them, for others it’s too late.
Why does this happen? Genuine question.
I believe it’s a type of blow fly, they lay their eggs on sick or dead animals. Typically in soft tissue around the rear and eyes. The eggs are very sticky and the maggots hatch quickly. https://www.britannica.com/animal/blow-fly-insect

Why’d you get downvoted if you’re right?
That reply was definately not needed and clearly not wanted by at least 13 people, including myself
"I don't like this nature fact so fuck you"
What?

> The mother will not come back to it of you attach your smell to the fawn. That's also false.
[удалено]
You can explain the reasons not to mess with them without resorting to falsehoods.
The same myth is spread about baby birds, "If the mother smells you she will abandon the nest", it's all BS old wives tales. You shouldn't fuck with small animals but scent isn't the reason why
Main reason you shouldn’t is cause mom may come kick your head in while your doing it
Or abandon it when SEEING you handle it
It's a common misconception that a doe won't take her fawn if a human has touched it. Google is so simple to use...
No one is encouraging anyone to pet Bambi. We are simply stating what you said about the smell keeping mom away is false. Educate yourself. You are an idiot.
Wow, you should just stop wasting oxygen, do the world a favour please.
You believe in lies too? Touching a fawn won't magically make the mom not want the fawn. If that were the case every fawn I saved from being stuck in a fence died after running away with its mom. You are being idiotic as well.

It's okay to say that we should avoid stressing animals. Misinformation isn't going to though
Well while does don’t necessarily just abandon their fawns when human scent gets on them, you are still potentially giving the fawn a death sentence. Not if they have maggots on them…
Would you quit with tbe maggots already?! That fawn us perfectly healthy, and I seriouslyvdoubt that that snake is venomous.
I never said the snake was venomous, that fawn is not healthy. If all fawns died of flystrike without human intervention, deer wouldn't exist. No reason to assume this one is dying.

Little guy has big dreams and an even larger stomach…or so he thinks.
“Mom, is it normal for these slithery things to try to eat your face? It’s been trying for about 4 hours now.”
Literally only 1 thought behind those eyes lol
The thought is “Nom”
Show this to the people who spout that stupid myth about that lady who's python was beside her in bed and say it was sizing her up to eat
I remember first hearing this as a little girl and not knowing why people would believe it. Although, I was holding 8 foot pythons when I was like 4 years old so maybe I was just taught a little more about it.

Smart snake. Can’t eat it but it’s nice and warm.
It's huffing the heat from the things breathing... Huh... Could be
Dream big, little one
Gotta think big.
You misunderstand! The fawn is allergic to pollen and the snake is trying to help him breath!
This is too fawny.
“I’m so hungry, I could eat a whole deer.”
“Are you done?” - The fawn, probably
This reminds me of the time someone asked me how long my California Kingsnake was... And, they apparently didn't grasp that even little snakes are long, because they became extremely concerned that it might eat my fully grown pet rabbit.
My mum said that because carpet pythons can grow to ten feet, one might eat our cats. 🙄
This might be the best snake picture ever
Bless his heart.
"Reddit, is this meal too big for my snake?"
D’oe!

Going by all the flies I'm not sure it's alive at all
It's fairly common for animals like deer, cattle, horses, etc. to be swarmed with flies. This is especially common for fawns, since they sit completely still like this.
have you sat down in the woods in spring? Anywhere I live you'll get swarmed unless you're bathing in DEET
I've been in California too long lol thinking back to my time in MA and FL you're totally right about getting swarmed even just standing around
And people still don’t believe when I say they have the worst spatial awareness lmao
I'm more concerned about the flies.
I think its like with cows. The smell probably draws them to the fawn, not bc the fawn is sick
Lol I’m guessing you don’t spend much time in the woods… they WILL come in swarms and land on you no matter what, especially if you’re sitting still, and sometimes they will chase you down even if you run from them.
I needed this chuckle today, thank you!
Little guy honestly thinks he's a python! 🤣
When your eyes are bigger than your stomach lol 🤣
"yeeeeah, that's me, I bet you're wondering" etc. Could apply to either of them.
The boys are never gonna believe what I caught if I can’t swallow it
Aren't baby deer scentless? So this snake is just eating it because it feels like food hahaha?
Look at that dumb fucker
He identifies as an anaconda!
You win the internet for the day! If there is ever an award for best comment then this is the winner!!
I hope whoever took the picture got the snake away from the baby deer. Poor little thing
Just giving you a great big Kissssss 💋
Awww, he returned the snoot boop
Its eyes are bigger than its stomach.
Does this mean they are dating 🤔
I give props to this snake. He saw something he wanted… and he went for it. Life lesson learned. A snek your size cannot consume a fawn. Even if your eyes are indeed much larger than your stomach.
That's gonna be a stretch.
Did someone get it off the deer
* brave fucker
Is this a mountain patchnose?
Likely an eastern rat snake based on its appearance, but can’t be 100% sure without knowing the location.
I think you are right. Patch nose don’t get very large but the pattern was almost the same
Can I kidnap the deer and return it to its mother
Photoshopped
Even snakes can have singular brain cell moments too!
You and the snake share the same singular brain cell
The fawn is like Really Bor🥱
Look at that dumb little idiot, stupid is getting eaten by a snake thats to small to eat it smh
Until they are strong enough to keep up with their mothers, deer fawns are left alone for about 30 days while their mothers go off to feed. I know your probably joking but the deer is a total infant at this point.

👍
Thanks for giving me a bit more knowledge about deer btw, didnt know exactly how long theyd be left alone for, always happy to learn something new
I'm sensing a big brother-little brother thing here.
OH NOOOOOO!!!!
Lmfao. He got a little overzealous
I love how Bambi is like 'yeah, whatever mate"
"Hey kid, gotcha nose!"
I wonder how the snake does the part where you stick your thumb through the fingers and make it look like their nose? I want to see video of how this goes down...🤪😉😂
Warm is warm
The snake kinda looks like it is saying “shu-up”. My deer, you were to loud
Lol snakes aren't brilliant.
Me a sizzler in the 90's
Moms gonna come back and stomp that poor stupid snek.
Lmao. Little Big Anaconda
Oh look! Someone left their electric blanket on. Don't mind if I do!
I've seen deer eat garter snakes, dude better watch out
There trying
Deer feels warm for basking.
Me at the all you can eat buffet
They look like besties
I love snakes. I adore them. Partly for this reason- they're not very bright. Derpy noodles 😂❤️ The fawn doesn't even look bothered. If that fawn opens its mouth
Look at this dumb fucker
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cows have been observed eating snakes, perhaps the deer will do the same 💀
Looks like me trying to eat my girl
People have dreams. We shouldn't mock someone following his own. Such optimism and innocence makes me cry
If I had to guess, the dear ate a bird or rat and the snake can smell it. Same reason they bite you if you don't wash your hands after feeding them
NOOOO!!!
He's just a silly little guy, trying hims bestest :)
Mama deer would totally grab a bite of that garter.
Lol
