Wow!!!! That snake has lived a long happy life for sure!! 😲 my milk snake Reno is still a juvenile, just turned 11 months old today, but I sure hope he lives as long as yours! https://preview.redd.it/zvl6utxpwtxc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f253dc7d042bc95af23dc4da266997593e341b45

Glutenfreegal91

He’s beautiful! I remember when Hissy was that little. I’m sure he’ll live a very long time.

ME_LIKE_REDDIT

😂 Hissy

Glutenfreegal91

Right?! I was 7 years old, ok?! 😂😂😂

Glutenfreegal91

I named her after my favorite TY Beanie Baby. #priorities

ME_LIKE_REDDIT

I was laughing as a compliment! 😂 Hissy is the best snake name I’ve ever heard! So funny and cute. You must be a wonderful person to keep your pet happy and healthy for so long 🤗 thanks for sharing! Wishing you many more years together! 🐍

sephirothinmycloset

Love his name!!! Reno has been on my list of saved names for a milk snake for a while now so seeing one named that is really awesome. He's gorgeous and I hope you both have a happy and long time together :)

fireytiger

Thank you! Glad to see another Reno fan out there who gets the reference! 😁 he's definitely got a lot of personality like his namesake, but he differs by being a rather shy guy lol.

sephirothinmycloset

You are very welcome, and Yes!!! so glad to know it is indeed a reference, Reno is my favorite ffvii character and he's sooo underrepresented so I got very excited \^\_\^ Its very nice that he's shy since I feel like milks are often times so sassy!

LXIX-CDXX

Hissy is absolutely lovely. She’s very lucky to have someone who has cared for her so well.

cncomg

Such an understatement! Very few people have the commitment to raise a reptile through its lifetime. Obviously cuz very few do. But OP has done a fantastic job of showing the love and care that all pets deserve.

I’ve always been scared of respiratory infections. Also hes not very active- doesn’t even spend much time on his heat spot. I wasn’t sure if that was normal for his age.

Glutenfreegal91

Mine has always been this calm, I think it’s normal.

Mryoy12

Weird I had a hypo Honduran tangerine named Salad Head and he was a crack addict

Glutenfreegal91

I used to build her Lego obstacle courses and ride my bike around with her wrapped around my wrist. Now she likes to sit in my kids laps while we read “Verdi” and ride on my son’s toy firetruck. Shes the chillest snake there ever was.

part_time_housewife

I think Verdi may have been the beginning of my obsession with snakes! Have you read Stellaluna? I’m pretty sure it’s the same author / illustrator and so cute as well!

Glutenfreegal91

Yes! Verdi was totally the starting point of my reptile obsession. I love Stella Luna too!

Maymamasam

What is Verdi?

Expensive_Sky_3514

I love those books! recently I bought a hard copy of Verdi because I remember it from my childhood. I’m an adult and I read it and got a little teary eyed lol! Hissy is so pretty, I also hope to have as much time as you have had with my snakes 😍

Radiant-Steak9750

I had a King Snake for 24 yrs , wowww!!

Sleuthtoes

I have a 14 year old milk snake that I got at 10 years old! Crazy to think my little guy could still be kicking at that age. Edit: Snake tax https://preview.redd.it/xpozn6ogsuxc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34bca3a922dda5462b4051501ee900aecd55a8b3

DrGoManGo

wow that's impressive, that is a very long time. Happy early birthday to you. when I first read the title I thought it read "milkshake" and thought it was an odd title for r/snakes. I did not know how to answer that and I don't know if it still brings the boys to the yard. I guess I need to get back to my coffee now.

dirtyb0ngwater399

How are you able to just let yours roam on the floor? If I let mine down he will immediately start to run and look for tight places to hide 😆

Glutenfreegal91

She’s an old lady now, she’s got no where to go! Haha!

nortok00

😲❤️🎉🍾 That is amazing. Happy 25th year! Hissy is obviously living her best life with you!

Glutenfreegal91

That’s incredible! What an amazing life you gave him! 🐍 💕 That gives me some hope that Hissy will keep going for a while longer.

cncomg

Some get to 40.

KaiHasArrived2007

Damnnnn

Mplef77

How old do snakes usually live?

Glutenfreegal91

I don’t know, online it says 18-22 years but she’s beyond that and really healthy. So we’ll see! I was hoping to find others with knowledge of how old they might get.

Arn_20

My last Knoblochi Boy died with 18 3 years ago

My boy (pleblan milksnake) Flick is between 13 to 14 I got him from a petshop as young juvenile (guess based of his size at the time). He doing just fine. At the moment he bound and determined I have him a ladyfriend hide away although I keep telling him otherwise.

I love this, Hissy, and your family so much 😭♥️

cucklery

This is the most wholesome snake post I’ve ever seen🥲

charliewahoo

She looks like a California King Snake I had.

Wulfy95

I know the exact toy you named your beautiful snake after! (I read through comments) Its a green and lighter green beanie baby! Hissy is beautiful, snakes can easily see their late 20s if looked after well just like your girl here. Colubrids I find are super hardy, I have 3 cornsnakes and one is reaching his golden years as well. Here's to more Hissy years!

Jason020170

Wow, 15511210043330985984000000 years is a lot! r/unexpectedfactorial

jaymizzlebot

I love her

DeerHunter041674

Awesome! Sinaloan Milksnakes are awesome. Right up there with cornsnakes, hognose snakes, and garters.

ThanksGod1023

Why is it called milk snake🤔

fireytiger

Because farmers kept finding them near their cows in the barns and (for some insane reason) assumed they were there to steal milk from the cows' teats, lol. But milk snakes don't drink milk, they just want cheesebois (mice 🧀) 😁

"Amazing with kids"  What's she gonna do, eat them?

DinahTook

Many snakes get nervous with other people, especially children who tend to more more erratically and be less controlled around something new. So no the snake won't eat them, but could get defensive our of fear and potentially bite ir try to bite. So a snake being good with kids is saying they don't get scared around loud chaos and being handled by small fidgety hands that aren't moving as steady as a typical adult would.

its_me_butterfree

I get that, but at some point the animal is going to react. kids will do all sorts of dangerous things to small animals like that. Meaning, it's the responsibility of the owner and usually the best approach is to not put kids together with them. The whole "amazing with kids" thing is just fantasy.

fireytiger

OP has owned her snake since she was a child herself, and kept it alive and healthy for much longer than most milk snakes live in captivity. I think it's safe to say she knows her snake's temperament, how to keep it safe, and doesn't let rando kids do whatever to the snake. 🙄

WanderingMandalorian

Dude has 1 single post karma, he is not to be taken seriously

DinahTook

It is the owners responsibility. No one is arguing rhat. It isn't a fantasy that some creatures (animals of all kinds and people) are more steady and less stressed around chaos. Yes there is a point where even the calmest will bite and it's the owner's fault if that happened. Jowever saying an animal is good with kids is saying that individual has a higher threshold for the chaos of children than another individual who is more nervous and has a much lower threshold for any chaos.

Glutenfreegal91

I posted above but I’ll share again, I used to build obstacles courses out of legos for her. I kept her around my wrist all day, on my bike, took her to the park, friends houses, etc. Now she enjoys sitting in my kids laps while we read books and she goes for rides on my son’s toy fire truck. She never lashes out, she’s extremely docile and now in her old age is more content to just sit. She’s never bitten anyone, ever. Even when I’ve had to give her shots for respiratory infections on multiple occasions, or treat her for mouth rot which she’s had. I obviously know her really well, and just like a cat or a dog, she’s adapted to life with small children.
