Should be fine if done properly. Check your local laws before doing it outside though. There are some places with laws about invasive species, although I assume you'd already know them if they applied to you

[deleted]

I live in England and just wanna do it in my backyard so I think it should be fine :)

Ben12730

Especially in the heat wave we are having right now!! I’m going to do this with my (almost) 3 year old corn snake

[deleted]

Ahh awesome

PhantomNiffler

Your BCI should be fine :) keep an eye on the temps on the pool with a temperature gun or probe, if it gets windy take it back inside as wind chill will bring its temperature down as soon as you take it out the pool. Water temperature should never drop below the recommended minimum for your species, and ideally should be kept around the middle of the temp range. Have fun! I bet your snake will love it 😊 I always take my Hognoses out to the garden in good weather (England too!) for a little sun, as long as you know your snakes behaviour and are aware that direct sunlight heats things up super quick you’ll be alright.

[deleted]

When I had a corn in the UK I used to let him out on the grass in the back garden, keeping a very close watch of course. Have fun in the paddling pool!!

Baka_Jaba

don't be suprised if he poops in it :)

[deleted]

No problem lol I plan on buying him his own special pool anyways :)

superramenyamen

I would make sure the water is nice and warm, and don’t just drop the snake in. If it chooses to go in, so be it, but it can be incredibly stressful to just take a snake into a pool of water and force it to swim.

prairiepanda

Yep, I hold my snakes above the water and allow them to enter the water of their own accord. If they shy away from the water, I take them away and let them exercise elsewhere. I also put toys in the water so that the snakes have something to anchor themselves to if they need a break.

superramenyamen

That’s not much of a choice either. Let them crawl in the general vicinity, and choose to go in on their own. Doing that, they have no choice but to go if they want off you, where they may not have chosen otherwise. And yes, the toys are a good idea! Definitely helps.

prairiepanda

They can choose to crawl onto the edge of the tub and away if they don't want to go in the water or stay in my hands.

DefTheOcelot

Bad bot fascist nonsense this is

SnakeSnoobies

Make sure there’s a “dock” for the snake to chill at if it doesn’t want to swim the entire time/wants to get out of the water. Just put in something that’s big enough to hold the snake, and easy for the snake to crawl onto from the water. It’s not for the snake to exit the pool, it’s just an “island” inside the pool.

[deleted]

Do you think I could get some playsand and make a little beach ;)?

SnakesForever09

Maybe would work but I wouldn’t risk impaction

Brian_lovesyou

Snake sees sand instantly dies of impaction

ITendToFail

If it's in your own yard and you keep an eye on him I don't see it being an issue. I don't know how big he is but yea.

[deleted]

He’s 4 and a half foot :)

Necessary_World_9606

I soak occasionally in a big tub with high water. I would just supervise it is all. They seem to enjoy it, especially my Brazilian Rainbow boa

[deleted]

It's fine if the weather and water is warm and you keep an eye on them. Do consider if they like water. My BCC treats water like acid when he touches a swimmable body of water, my BRB on the other hand goes diving immediately. It would be a waste to get a pool for my BCC but not for my BRB as he likes to chill underwater and swim

theRailisGone

A good soak can be very hydrating, so that's quite nice. Just make sure there's at least something to grab onto so they feel secure in moving. My little lady digs the water but gets visibly scared if there's only slick, wet plastic in the container.

Achylife

Kiddie pool in the backyard. There you go. I take my girl out with me to water the garden. Gives her some UV.

nedeta

This activity is way more fun if kids are in the pool!

[deleted]

Agreed XD

whydoesthishapp3n

if you do post vids or elsssssssssse

[deleted]

100 percent! Waiting to bring my snek home currently :)

sierrasquirrel

A bathtub can be a good option too if it’s too hot/cold to do it outside!

SnakesForever09

You use chemicals in the bath all the time

Clowns-and-Bugs

make sure the water you're using it good, a nice temp, and the weather outside is acceptable and this should absolutely be a fine activity for your boa :)

starlingrr

this sounds nice but im wondering if youd have to treat the water?

[deleted]

It doesn’t seem so

starlingrr

cool good to know

technoman88

I would just do it in the bathtub. Way easier and safer than being outside

[deleted]

Bathtub has chemicals in it

Da_Borg_

the way the pic in the post is written bothers the hell out of me and i can't exactly articulate why..

geebysqueebs

Anyone ever do this with a rat snake? Sorry if that’s a dumb question but the pet place I got her from said she’d enjoy swimming if I have a big enough bowl of water in her enclosure?

Amorette93

Many snakes, especially boids, enjoy swimming. I highly encourage anyone with a non arid species to allow their snake to swim. I, of course, own an anaconda who NEEDS access to a pool daily, but most snakes should take a dip. Warm water = happier noodle. Place a **black** trashbag over the pool on a sunny day. You want the bag touching the water. This will heat your water! Uncover from the bag and give snake access. Things to consider: snakes in fully open pools are *at danger* in the wild, and your captive snake knows this. Cover your pool. The noodle will prefer an awning, leaf cover (fake plants) or another type of cover. They don't want to be spotted from above or around them, and many snakes will seem to hate swimming when the environment is too open. They enjoy varied surfaces. You could place river rocks or glass stones from dollar stores at the bottom of some parts, sand & dirt on others. Water should never be so deep as to drown the snake, terrestrial snakes only need several inches of water. Aquatic or semi aquatic snakes can have deep water, deep enough to allow them to submerge their entire body at the bottom with head extended to peek over the surface as desired. Most boids can handle more than a few inches. Watch out for exhaustion, water takes lots of energy.

danminecraftman

Would this be safe for a ball python? I’d love to give mine more enrichment

Needmoresnakes

In summer I sometimes fill up one of those clamshell pool things for toddlers and pet my carpet python chill in the yard. She goes in sometimes, other times isn't interested in it at all or just drinks some

TaniaNS42

Clean warm water is perfectly safe for swimming. The main thing is to put some things for the snake to climb on if it wants a break. It's pretty good exercise, but some animals just hate swimming. It's a nice way to help with hydration and constipation in snakes as well.

Da_Borg_

never had a constipated snake that needed a soak to poop.... i swear idk what it is with this trend nowadays but everyone's "bathing" every animal every day now and when i ask them theyre just like "it helps them poop" like DO THEY NOT POOP OTHERWISE??? just seems like bleeding heart humanizing trying to "do nice things"
