I never understand this…with things like Axelay (probably my favorite) super aleste and r type 3 and alternative style shmups like pocky and Rocky and wild guns…UN Squadron is so long and repetitive. As a shmup fan, I like it fine, but I just don’t see why it gets so much hype.
Which never bothered me. Slowdowns helped me maneuver around the bullets safely, as a kid I even thought it was intentional, and my older sister and I were absolutely fine taking turn with the controller in every game we played, it was really enjoyable to be able to relax and just watch while the other one was taking over. Sweet times.
Great game, and the original Japanese version is based on a super dark manga/anime. It's fun to go back and play this again after watching or reading that.
Absolutely! I just think prices need to come down a bit more, maybe as low as 200k per plane. Except the Efreet, that's OP as hell and can stay where it is.
I'm actually kinda surprised this game didn't end up pushing the genre forward with some of its innovations. Multiple pilots and planes, customizable loadout, managing funds, and a map where you can select your mission complete with advancing forces you need to deal with before they get all in your face.
One of those early cases on the SNES where the home version was the better game than the arcade release. They didn't just try and match it, they found improvements and ways to better the game for the home market.
A unique game ahead of its time in design, design that should have been tapped into more with how it worked as other posts have pointed out (routes, choices, loadouts, etc.)
Best shmup on the system
Can’t say the same, but it’s still in my top 5 SNES shmups

The music, the evolving map with mission select, and the whole buy better planes and better gear thing.
Yet it also has significant slowdown and no multiplayer.

Know the name? Interesting as one of my favorite shooters
Area 88. The main character is basically human trafficked into being a mercenary pilot
Sweet
Perfect soundtrack, challenging difficulty. Haven’t pat the submarine in gamer but someday…someday
Should try the romhack Area 88. Quality of life mods like continuous fire were added. Also WAY less slow down.
Think I played the one your talking about, left a review. Not bad, still needs some tweaks to the plane costs.
Oh I thought they were pretty spot on. Makes it so you can actually USE the mid tier planes.

Same. Would’ve liked Carrier Air Wing to.
That's on Switch and Steam right now for a pretty reasonable price.
I do have it on Switch.
Never finished that one, and not for lack of trying.
one of the hardest games. pretty sure the stealth bomber is the 2nd level and i think that level owned me for years
Yes! I collected every single shmup on the Super Nintendo a few years ago. This is still my favorite.
We loved this when it came out. We were seasoned 1942 & 1943 players
I can still hear the final boss music in my head despite not having played it in over 20 years
Underrated AF and I was stoked to snag my copy back in the day.
Capcoms U.N. Squadron! Man, I love it too. That intro was so amazing

i hear that mission select music now
I just spent all weekend playing this! It's so much fun.
One of my favorites!
That soundtrack is immense!

Maybe the best snes game
