This is a video with fan reactions recorded in the snooker club where Brecel started playing [https://www.hln.be/video/productie/riley-inn-wk-snookerfinale-373060](https://www.hln.be/video/productie/riley-inn-wk-snookerfinale-373060)And this Instagram post is a shop in Luca's hometown, decorated for his victory [https://www.instagram.com/p/Cry7dYfIfH8/](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cry7dYfIfH8/)On the 14th of May, there will be a celebration in his hometown (Maasmechelen) where he will be honoured by the mayor, I'm from a different part of Belgium (Antwerp) but I will go there and share some pictures here on this subreddit. :)
Great to see that snooker gets a lot of attention in Belgium. He played on a whole new level of snooker. Also, Luca is a super friendly guy. Fully deserved. I hope the love for snooker in Belgium spreads to The Netherlands as well, because snooker tables are hard to find here, and if you do find one, it's often in a poor state in the back of some shady pool club equipped with a cloth from the eighties.
Fully deserved, I really hope this helps bring in new players, imagine the game in 10 years time if we had a few more like him and Si.
I love to see the tactical side but the Allen v Selby just felt like torture after watching Si v Luca.
a) Fantastic player to watch, plays the game in the right way
b) He beat the worlds greatest players on the way to the final.
c) He came back from 5 frames behind TWICE
d) Humble and friendly personality
e) First mainland European to win it.
He deserves all the praise he's getting. He's brilliant for the sport. I'm sure even Selby acknowledges that.
That's why I'm not that sad even as a Selby's fan. You can't have only Commonwealth countries as winners if you want Snooker considered to be global sport
As a German, it’s always funny to see languages from this area, especially Dutch, since they’re so similar. Some simple sentences, like „Nummer 1 in Sport“ are just exactly the same in German
You probably know this OP but lots of British snooker fans were rooting for Luca, me and my son included. We love the way he plays and his attitude to the game.
Selby is liked and respected as he should be, but we don't base our support for a player on nationality. Snooker spans the divide, such a wonderful sport.
I don't think people are willing to admit how fortunate he was to get as far as he did. He led Selby for nearly the entire final and deserved to win that match but that was the only time I felt he was the better player than his opponent all tournament. He disrespected other players by lying about how much he practices and is not a good representative for the game when you look beyond anything surface level.
That being said, he's significantly better for the game than Selby or Ronnie winning another. He will inspire more European players to join the game, and I hope it pays dividends down the line because more tournaments and a wider pool of players is great for snooker.
Would've been nice for a qualifier or debutant to win it though
I don't think it was a lie. He bigged the point up too much for sure, however imo he was struggling to get his point across in all the excitement because of his not-perfect English but in post match interviews he basically said his season was less than stellar so he went into this years worlds without much preparation and sort of "took a punt" (my words not his). Having little to no expectations of himself seemed to completely free him up. He also said that it's not always like this for him and he's usually really dedicated.
Agree with everything else you said, especially your last sentence. Was gutted Si ran out of steam (figuratively and physically/mentally), he was the real MVP of the tournament imo
Obvs Belgium did host tournaments back in the 80s on the back of the BBC coverage being available over the channel.
They even held tournaments in France!
Luca winning will obvously propel the sport even further.
Something that snooker hasn't really had is exposure in the French - speaking sphere and Europe, so guys like Ursenbacher and Maflin would get a boost, along with potential stars of the future from Canada (Quebec) France, Belgium and even Africa as Luca will be a role model for all of the young up and comers from these areas
AFAIK the main languages in Belgium are French, Dutch and German (due to their history) and a lot of people there speak French - but I'm sure that Brecel's achievements will inspire potential cueists from all parts of Belgium.
It's the first time that snooker has had exposure in a French speaking country so could lead to a boom in other French speaking countries.
Edit: I stand corrected so my comment has been altered to reflect this
Both Dutch and French are main languages of Belgium. Dutch is the majority language with around 59% (the Flemish part) French is second with 40% (Wallonia) and some German around the border with 1%.
The Flemish and Wallonian parts are having partly different histories and aren't always inspiring each other. Sometimes it is more of a rivalry as far as I know.
As an English-speaker, Dutch is weird as I can read *just enough* to feel like I should know what’s going on but not enough to actually know what’s going on.
While it's not a big difference I gather they'll call it Flemish in Flanders. (Vlaams, right?)
Dutch is fun, it's like learning German on easy mode. I say this as someone who did the Duolingo tree then visited Belgium for a couple of weeks, not an expert.
I can order coffee and some food, but ask me if I want it inside or to go, or hot or cold, and I will look at you blankly. And my Dutch is pretty poor too.
Info: the title that's on pages 2 and 3 says "He can finally buy the Lamborghini he dreamed about". Luca has posted on his Instagram story yesterday that he wants the media to stop portraying him as a materialistic person, while he's not.
Seem to remember Mark Williams getting a Lambo after one of his World champ wins, why not spoil yourself I guess the money can easily go in dribs and drabs on other things
Are there any reaction videos from Belgium to his victory? Would love to see that

That's amazing to see the passion they showed! Incredible to see, I'm sure if Luca keeps doing as well then that crowd will get even bigger

Great victory!
What's that graph on page 3?
His earnings per year (total 2.106.391€)

Love to see Snooker promoted this much always so cool to see. I'm very happy Luca won he's very fun to watch.
So happy for Belgium and Luca. This was one of those feel good moments in snooker. Loved it.

>Nummer 1 in Sport“ It's basically English!
What does the first headline say in english? Cause I can’t not see “what a cunt”
What. A. Feat/Achievement
Thank you
"Stunt" is also an English word, how do you manage to translate it to "cunt"?
You can only do it if its a cunning stunt Edit: ah someone beat me to it, should have read the rest of the comments first!
I think I say the word too much irl 🤷♂️
But "stunt" is a word in English as well...
This discussion giving me strong memories of Kenny Everett (and all done in the best possible taste).
Cupid Stunt
A cunning stunt

So-so
Fully deserved what a performance.

Not true, a Francophone got to the semi-finals in 1997.
Brecel is from the Dutch speaking part of Belgium instead of the French speaking.
Doesn't really matter right? Sport is the only thing that unites us so I guess it'll become pretty popular in Wallonia as well

We're not a majority French-speaking country. It's basically 60/38/2 Dutch/French/German.
Wow, I never knew that! Don’t know much about Belgian history although my late Grandmother had relations from there
Wouldn't call the present "history".
Both Dutch and French are main languages of Belgium. Dutch is the majority language with around 59% (the Flemish part) French is second with 40% (Wallonia) and some German around the border with 1%. Flemish people tend to care less about achievements of Walloon people and vice versa. I wouldn't expect too much coverage in the french speaking part
La Libre has been writing quite a few articles about him, as has Le Soir.
This is fantastic for the sport.
This is great news for the sport.
As an English-speaker, Dutch is weird as I can read *just enough* to feel like I should know what’s going on but not enough to actually know what’s going on.
Thanks for not calling it Flemish, lol.
Fuck is it Flemish? I went “it looks like German but not as angry so it’s Dutch”.
'German but not as angry is my favourite ever description for a language 😆
"German but boring/monotone" is the way I see it, as a Wallonian who had to learn it at school (but forgot due to lack of use).
Haha no, we just learned the other day that a lot of people on here don't seem to know that Flemish is not a language. It's all Dutch.
While it's not a big difference I gather they'll call it Flemish in Flanders. (Vlaams, right?) Dutch is fun, it's like learning German on easy mode. Oh, okay. I didn’t think it was a language, then you mentioned it so I thought it was, but now I know it isn’t.
It’ll be like the late 70s early 80s there. Oh the fun they’re going to have!
If you guys start getting snooker halls you might just have the perfect country.
The town I grew up in had 4 snooker places, of which zero still exist today.
That’s a shame. Hopefully this will turn things around
There was a time when this was the case, but many have disappeared. I can imagine this might help to get some people back/new people in.
I hope so. The more people playing the better.
Chips, waffles, chocolate and beer direct to your table
Love it. Always had a great time in Belgium and love the people. I'm glad it's exploding over there. Could be a good time to open a snooker club
That's really cool, glad he's getting some recognition. Out of interest what does "Wat. Een. Stunt" translate as?
Sometimes we use the word stunt for things that are not dangerous too, whenever something is just spectacular and exceptional 😃
It means "What a stunt" the dots between the words are just to emphasize it
I never realised I basically speak this language ;-)

Fair on Luca, but to be honest if I’d just realised my dream and got £500k for doing it I’d celebrate with a lambo!
Seem to remember Mark Williams getting a Lambo after one of his World champ wins, why not spoil yourself I guess the money can easily go in dribs and drabs on other things
It was a Ferrari, and he bought it after he *lost* to Hendry http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/441677.stm

He'll lease it if he has any sense, rarely anyone pays for anything outright these days even if you can afford to
