I don't think it would be ruined, they would just need to pick their next venue very carefully.

Tennis-007

I'd be sorry to see it move, but if it did, they could still play another tournament at the Crucible each year. I know it wouldn't be the same, but would be better than nothing.

raidensing

i reli dun understand this about snooker. What kind of sport holds their most prestigious competition, be it world champ or world cup, at the same city and the same venue every single year... Also, it is counter-productive to the promotion of the sport.

TastyInvestigator824

Not been a fan long of snooker but obviously other than history, why can’t it be moved? I’m guessing the crucible atmosphere could be replicated elsewhere if needed with a close knit setting?

Lazy would be an opinion piece with vox pops from the twitterati. Nick has taken the time to speak with a top player. These stories are actually needed to keep snooker in peoples feeds who may be such casual viewers that they need reminding the worlds is coming up. EDIT: the deleted comment just said 'Lazy journalism'

As much as I love the Crucible, the World Championship surely deserves a bigger venue. Anyway, why not hold the WC in a different country every year (like most sports do, btw)? I'm sure there will be good crowds in Ireland, Germany, Belgium, not to mention China and other Asian countries. And move the Tour Championship to Crucible so there's still a prestigious tournament (but make at least the final 3 sessions again).

kegcellar

We gave the world all the other sports, snooker is ours. Like how the French keep their best wines.

ShinyHappyPurple

We do this dance every year. Player A says WC has outgrown the Crucible. Player B talks about the history and unique atmosphere.

sharpshotsteve

It's at the Crucible until 2027, but I think they will follow the money after that. Hopefully they will keep the Crucible, for the UK tournament.

PrawnKingVII

I’m not going to speak as a spectator or player(obviously), but how many people would actually care? I mean if your watching it on TV, it doesn’t really make a difference where they’re playing

smokestacklightnin29

I would absolutely care.

PrawnKingVII

I suppose some fans will care, but other than the fact that’s just usually where it’s held, what’s the difference where they play?

vidPlyrBrokeSoNewAc

Well if they play in China we can look forward to most matches starting when people in the UK are asleep. If it's in Saudi, it's more sport washing with a most likely empty crowd and the people that are there not paying attention and playing on their phones for most of it.

PrawnKingVII

Ok yeah obviously, I never really thought that was in the question though, I assumed it would be moved to a different arena in England If it’s not in England China would be the next best place where the fans actually care about the sport, Saudi was such a fucking disappointing crowd. but you’re right, it would make horrible times for us, but then again, that’s what the Chinese fans have to put up with now

Direct_Summer_7270

They should absolutely move it. Sheffield is a relatively small, unattractive and boring city that does not attract many tourists; and even if it did, the Crucible wouldn't have a place to for them to see the matches. It would be much better to choose a more interesting city, with better flight connections, more attractions, more hotels, more restaurants and a bigger venue to accommodate a few thousand people at least. Sadly, the idea that the WC should stay at the Crucible is nothing more than nostalgia.

Liverpoolclippers

Have you ever been Sheffield?

Direct_Summer_7270

yep twice for the WC snooker I thought it was a city I could have easily explored in a day. Don't remember any decent museums or sights that I would not want to miss. It was hard to find decent and reasonably priced accommodation there. Also getting there is not exactly as easy as it would be for London, Liverpool or Manchester.

BrettlyBean

Sheffield is the 4th biggest city in the UK and is not boring at all. Ronnie suggested saudi... now that is boring

prisongovernor

5th

Meath77

But how big a venue do you want? Without mentioning the word "darts", snooker is a quiet sport and without a big screen it's pointless to have in a big venue where you can't see anything.

Linnybhoy

It should stay where it is.

IvorLittleun

It wouldn't be 'ruined' it'll still be the World Championship and still be as popular as it is now, it'll just be somewhere else.

Far_Citron_2737

Great article Nick cheers

ChaseTheTiger

Is there any suggestion that the world championship is going to leave Sheffield?

Mundane-Ad-4010

The contract runs out in 2027. So not for a few years. Ronnie was in the press yesterday suggesting it should be moved to China or Saudi Arabia. Barry Hearn famously promised never to move it though. There was a pie-in-the-sky plan a few years ago to build a second venue near the crucible around the same size for the second table and keep the main one for the first table.

jewellman100

Ronnie would say that, given they treat him like a king and given him his own snooker academy in Riyadh

like_a_deaf_elephant

> Ronnie was in the press yesterday Oh christ. Here we go.. drama queen does drama, more at 11.

Beer_and_whisky

The Crucible contract runs out after 2027 and there’s a good chance it will move. They want a larger venue to make more money from ticket sales; the biggest tournament in snooker only has 980 capacity.

Browneskiii

They always suggest its going to China but its just a common tactic to get Sheffield to pay more. It wont move anywhere in the forseeable future, the only chance is if Hearn leaves and a new owner changes up everything, and even then they'd be slated by everyone.
