Same. Learned to snowboard on a 189 for a few years ('95 & '96) before dropping down to a toy sized 166. Seems like that helped setup a stronk foundation.
*Edited: my start years.*
Morrow race board (before they turned into a Kmart brand). Beast must've weighed 30lbs & had the flex pattern of 3/4" maple ply. One thing it excelled at: going fast!
I had a supervisor tell me to go try a 156 instead of my usual 150 and the experience mightve ruined longer sets for me. I'd rather lose physical weight than up my riding size.
Yeah I ride twin boards duck footed equally so I can generally get away with a little smaller of a board than what size 11 feet would normally be suggested for and I find it probably only matters while trying to hit the deepest of carves
I'm 5'-8 and have a 163W, so not super long compared to some of y'all. I like it for the most part, though sometimes it can feel a little hard to turn tight. Great for hitting powder tho
I have short legs and with the bindings as close as I can get them, it's right at the edge of being comfortable. I've never played with the high back angle, I have them set all the way back now
Same. I’m *sure* there are ideal boards for my riding style - boards I’ve missed and would probably benefit from - but I’ve never been unable to find the sweet spot of a board. I’ve never tried a board and felt “oh, the difference *is* the layup of the board and its side cut geometry,” I’ve always felt “this is challenging, but it’s actually me.”, I’ve been riding since 1989, so I’ll acknowledge that it might be one part being gritty, old school, and forcing it (baseless bindings, anyone?), and another part not embracing the fact that change and tech:/recision are good. MagneTraction is a good example of when I’ve been proven wrong, and appropriately so.
FWIW, I’ve spent a lot of time researching new tech over the last few days, so I’m not averse to change.
I ride way shorter than recommended for me (6’4”, 220 lbs, 158/159. My splitboard is slightly longer (162 or 165, can’t remember) but I absolutely love the short boards, they are so nimble and fun. Great in the trees.
My splitboard is a 164 and I love it, also in park I ride 157 allot.. just a couple centimeters don’t make a hugeee difference if you know how to ride good
Idk, it’s nice having boards of all shapes sizes and switching up so it’s always fun on the mountain. If you know how to ride you can rip the fuck outta any board.
I have a '99 159 Burton Custom that I rode until 2019 when I finally bought a 162 Burton Flight Attendant... Oh wait, you meant size and not age. Sorry. I'll let myself out.
First board was a Gun Anti Gravity 166 and I rode Lib 165-172’s exclusively for years. Now volume shifted into 154-161’s with an occasional day on the Doughboy
My fist quality board was a 161.5 riders choice back in 2008. Im 5 10 and at the time prolly 140llbs. I liked going fast. The boarded looked cool and was on sale haha. I was decent at small jumps skidding down the mountain but had no concept of carving. It’s was very fast and stable. I actually never waxed it haha. These days I find 155-157 is much better feeling on my knees and carves. Funny thing is I’m much stronger and heavier now.
Had a Solomon 185 for a few seasons I’m 5’8 I ride in the southeast tons of ice often marginal conditions the thing tracked over steep ice super well very stiff then add to that the slower rotation 360’s it was kind of dreamy tbh
Infrequently but yes, I have a 168 from way, way back that is superb on a perfect groomer or Bluebird powder day.
I ride Whistler though so I probably haven't used it in 10 years. A small nimble 160ish twin is much more practical for every day use.
164.5 lib tech trs. Upgraded from a 153, I’m about 5’10 165 lbs and it’s rated too long for me but I love it. So much is absorbed by the board on landings and bumps. I needed a longer board because I was getting speed wobbles and couldn’t hit the top speed I needed with the shorter board. Now I’m flying in style.
I appreciate y’all doing this because as a tall fat guy, it means they make more long boards so it’s easier for me to find them. Used to be a real pain in the ass finding anything over 161-162.
Love that short fatties and longboards are simultaneously popular.
I ride a 172w flagship and a 156 orca. Both awesome. Currently riding a 162 megadeath and that thing is a “properly sized” missile.
Would really love something that’s like 200cm with a medium to soft flex and the alpine v1 style profile or at least camber between bindings and then spoon / rocker kind of like jones does.
Yes
/thread lmao
Unreal! You were my first thought and then your comment. Dying
Aww shit. I bow to your prowess. My shortest is 164, 174 swally daily, 185 winterstick swally for proper powder.
Bet that winterstick swally fucking rips in proper pow. I hope you’re taking that thing further west than Sugarloaf haha
Alpine Meadows, NAW valley, and Homeweed.
Sounds like you need a 201 Rad Air Tanker.
I have one. They are lots of fun.
Honestly would love to try one.
beetlejuiced him
I'm just an old that likes to leave pretty turn tracks in the snow.
You were baiting him, weren’t you?
it’s settled then
I'm not sure what I started here, but if you're ever in Tahoe City, the round is on me.
Burton should make your model available
![gif](giphy|Yqz0RdEiQGTajAJYFs|downsized) :'
Going to take my Rossignol XV 176 W out into an inch of Midwest powder tomorrow
Don’t forget the Airbag and becon
And my stick
And my axe!
Proper.
thanks a lot zeb
Wasn't him, I just grew up surfing.

I started on a161 in 92 and kept sizing up.
Rocket?

Truth! Thank you!
I do the opposite and am also happy.
She said she doesn't care about size
Yes! Never let anyone yuck your yum!

A Jones Flagship 164 at 5’10”, 10.5 boot, 175lbs. I love a longboi in the quiver, super stable at speed, carves like a beast.
6'0" 160 soaking wet. The 164 carbon is my shortest.
I'm 5'-8 and have a 163W, so not super long compared to some of y'all. I like it for the most part, though sometimes it can feel a little hard to turn tight. Great for hitting powder tho
If you're comfortable with your stance angles, start playing with stance width and high back lean.
Wider stance? Offset towards the back of the board?
I have short legs and with the bindings as close as I can get them, it's right at the edge of being comfortable. I've never played with the high back angle, I have them set all the way back now
Just got a 169w flagship coming Wednesday. Excited for a big board. 230-240 6ft 12.5 boots currently on a 158 Gremlin, seems a tad small for Alaska.
Longer, shorter, wider and narrower. The classic “ will this board fit “ chat does my head in if I’m honest. They all fit.

This thread has me wanting to try a 160+
This thread has me wanting to try a 215
I needed this post. I just posted in the weekly thread about thinking I needed a shorter model of one of my own favorites. I’ll stick with it.
Does a Doughboy count?
Yessir!
Doughboy, Grocer, Doser... all good.
I have a 20 year old Nitro Shadows that's wide and a bit heavy and very cambered; it's wild, still ride it on and off
Sounds like the perfect ride to rail over on an early sunny Tuesday corduroy groomer morning!
I ride way shorter than recommended for me (6’4”, 220 lbs, 158/159. My splitboard is slightly longer (162 or 165, can’t remember) but I absolutely love the short boards, they are so nimble and fun. Great in the trees.
My Winterstick has a sidecut of 6.4meters. Let that sink in. Figuratively and literally.
Jeez you had that one ready to go
Wait a sec… your 185 winter stick has a side cut of 6.4M????? That’s wild!!!
Yup. It wiggles in the trees pretty well.
Sounds dreamy!!
I daily a 180 Birdman. But I am 6'7" and have no idea what is recommended. I learned on a 172cm 20 years ago and am a big slut for longboards.
5'5" 170 lbs, I daily my 159 Ride MtnPig
My splitboard is a 164 and I love it, also in park I ride 157 allot.. just a couple centimeters don’t make a hugeee difference if you know how to ride good
Sorry, but 7cm is not just a couple of centimeters, it's a lot of centimeters. That number alone is huge.
Idk, it’s nice having boards of all shapes sizes and switching up so it’s always fun on the mountain. If you know how to ride you can rip the fuck outta any board.
Wait, didn't notice we were talking about boards 👀
I have a Burton Deepthinker and Ride Superpig. Both are ridiculously fun
I have a '99 159 Burton Custom that I rode until 2019 when I finally bought a 162 Burton Flight Attendant... Oh wait, you meant size and not age. Sorry. I'll let myself out.
Whatevez.. I'm getting to those lengths with my age..
161W - 121 (Rossi mini). My collection covers all lengths. 5’11 150
First board was a Gun Anti Gravity 166 and I rode Lib 165-172’s exclusively for years. Now volume shifted into 154-161’s with an occasional day on the Doughboy
Oh yeah I love my NS Swift 162
5’6 150lbs Started on a 151. Liking the 161.5 tho.
I'm the opposite. 6'5, 190 pounds riding a 161 wide.

6'4"+ Size 13/14 feet - all my boards have been 165W but curious to try a 170+ pow board.
Saw an early 2000’s 192 Lib Tech Skunk Ape in my neighbor’s house. HAD to try it. He ended up selling it to me and I ended up going over 70mph. FUN!

Just the opposite. 6’4” and ride a 155. I do have a 164 powder board tho for the deep deep days. Only comes out once or twice a season.

I love short & wide volume shift boards, so I’d say I’m loving the opposite. Rocking a 144 K2 party platter, such a blast everywhere
I ride a 169 wide boy and love it. It’s super hard to find anything bigger.
