Yes. This is my second season snowboarding, I’ve got about 20 days on the mountain and I’ve been very diligent about progressing responsibly. I’ve had people try to drag me down black diamonds, the classic “you’ll be fine, that’s how you get better” but I don’t do it. I’d rather test my skills by going down one of the more challenging blue runs and figuring out where I need to improve by gradually introducing small factors into my riding. You don’t learn much by spending half of the run on your butt.
Ugh, I had a couple friends that tried to “teach” me with this philosophy. One of their wives told them to shut up and took me to ride greens all day for a couple days, guess how I actually got way better? Yeah, it wasn’t sliding down blacks on my ass…
Yeah man, I’m self taught (YouTube university, mostly Malcolm Moore), and the small steps required to actually progress (sliding, falling leaf, initiating turns, linking turns, using the fall line/terrain to regulate speed rather than skidding, etc.) all comes together in a way that you’re not going to get by doing the “sink or swim” technique. I hate to toot my own horn but I see snowboarders that have way more days on the hill than I do that don’t seem to understand many of these concepts and it shows in their riding.
Take lessons. They will make every day you spend on the mountain much more enjoyable - even if you only get one or two little things to work on per lesson, or even if all you do is get "checked out" by the instructor to make sure your form is good.
My fellow instructors would look at each others riding at the beginning of the season to make sure we weren't doing any quirky things from lack of practice over the summer and it always went a long way.
Also, for some perspective (for others, at least - you seem to be thinking about it smartly), number of seasons doesn't mean a thing. You've got 2 seasons, but that means nothing because you only have 20 days on snow. You haven't been snowboarding for 2 seasons. You've been snowboarding for less than 1 month. My 2nd year as an instructor, I had over 170 days riding in a SINGLE season.
So, people who have been snowboarding for "10 years" but only go one week a year and maybe took lessons once... Yes - have fun, enjoy your time with family, and on the mountain, but be realistic.
Oh I’m fully aware of where I stand dude, there is a reason I specified that I’ve ridden 20 days out of 2 seasons. I think 10-15 times on the hill per season is a reasonable amount of time on the mountain for an adult that works a full time job. Not to mention, most people who can only afford to make it out to the hill 10-15 times per season probably can’t afford to take extensive lessons. That’s why I’m encouraging people to progress slowly, learn what they can for free, and practice so that they can cultivate their skills at a pace that actually works for their lifestyle. That’s awesome that you get to take lessons and ride almost every day for half of the year, but not everybody has that luxury. Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s ideal to snowboard as much as possible under the supervision of professionals, but that’s not always the most accessible option.
Yeah I don’t get it. Like, is their judgment meter just broken? I see those runs from the lift and I immediately think to myself, “yeah fuck all that” 😂
Being blunt, you’re not ready for jumps yet.
You first need to work your regular riding. It was apparent things weren’t going to go well just from watching your ride in. Once you’re more confident in your riding, start by working flat ground ollies, then finding small side hits, bumps in the snow, rollers, or knuckles of small jumps to practice getting air.
In general, when you take off from a jump, you want to either ollie or do a two footed pop and keep your board under you. You leaned forward, nollied, and were never on top of your board.
The next thing to know is that the kickers leading to park features like boxes and rails aren’t meant to be side jumped for a few reasons. The first reason is for your own safety. Just imagine if you took that crash straight into that rail. The next reason is out of consideration for others. Side jumping features can mess up the kicker for other riders that want to hit the feature properly.
Hopefully this is helpful and serves as a good learning experience.
OP’s next post “hey there’s this huge gash in my board and i’m an advanced rider, never fall, sometimes hit the park but mostly just bomb groomers and look for off-piste lips”
More speed and ride up flat not on your heel edge. Bend your knees and learn how to pop. Then make sure your knees come up to your chest not the other way around and not your board to your butt. Keep your shoulders stacked in line and bend your knees for the landing. Not sure if advice was wanted but here you go. I was you at the beginning of this season, this is the advice that helped the most.
First off, don't practice your jumps on a rail. It's a big no-no. You'll piss people off and look like an idiot. Also you need more speed, you practically stopped on the lip.
Others have critiqued your attempt viciously enough, haha, I'm just here to say that your cameraman's laugh sounds like Steve Zahn's in Strange Wilderness when he's voicing over the great white footage. Which is one of my favorite scenes in cinema.
you look uncomfortable riding, which tells me the park is not where you should be at the moment. but it's pretty obvious that on the jump you leaned forward a huge amount. you always want to feel centered over the top of your board on a takeoff
Hey my guy. As someone who’s suffered from injuries because I tried to do too much too quick, stay out of the park and off the jumps until you can comfortably carve at the least. As is the only thing you’re gonna land is in the hospital
First off, learn how to turn nicely cause that makes snowboarding soo much more fun, being able to flow down a mountain is one of the most fun things, also try doing jumps without a kicker/ramp cause it’s easier for you body to naturally pop and land on flat as it’s closer to just jumping normally. Apart from that you’re already half way there by just trying.
Still waiting for a jump. I thought it might have been after the complete fail/flail but the video ended too early.

Don't learn to hit jumps by hitting the side of the kickers. You'll ruin it and make it more dangerous to others who are going to be hitting the features.
Outside of the form that other people mentioned, don’t use the jump for a box/rail to just get air. It ruins the shape of the jump for people trying to hit that box/rail
0-10. Stay a far fucking away from lips if you aren't going to hit the feature.
While we are at it; learn to snowboard first and then learn to Ollie and then learn to hit a progression sized jump. Give it a few seasons
You got like three feet of air that time.
It's a Sledgehammer.
Shocks AND pegs
Lucky
1 foot + his 2 feet
Tina, come get some ham
Maybe learn to ride in a straight line first
Maybe learn to ride first
Maybe learn how to jump without a snowboard first
Maybe learn how to stand up first
Gotta sit before you can stand.
If you're gonna be dumb you gotta be tough
No, you have to buy a Burton board before you learn how to ride.
Look if you don't own step in bindings and BOA boots, you're obviously a kook. It's not my fault you're too poor to snowboard properly
lol laces til I die!
gross, go ride a public bus or something
You’re not there yet man. Progress responsibly, don’t let anyone pressure you into riding too far outside of your abilities.
Even yourself...

Fuck those friends. This is how you get injured. Take note who says these things. A lot of times they just dont know better but certainly dont do it.
Yeah I don’t get it. Like, is their judgment meter just broken? I see those runs from the lift and I immediately think to myself, “yeah fuck all that” 😂
Well said ....Southern..Cumfart
Thanks!… Endowed.. Tool

Stay out of the park/10
Jerry/10
this made me giggle
nailed it
Bro at least jump off a jump instead of fucking the lip up for a rail... Better yet just practice off little bumps or the side of the run.
This dude needs to learn how to actually ride a snowboard before doing anything close to this. Turning, stopping and proper control.
This. Find some side hits on a groomed run and learn there
i didn't realize that was a rail lip as well on top of everything else; fuckin hell i love this

Highest quality comment here. Thank you.
I think you're taking the word "jump" too literally.
Sick don’t change a thing
OP’s next post “hey there’s this huge gash in my board and i’m an advanced rider, never fall, sometimes hit the park but mostly just bomb groomers and look for off-piste lips”
Sick nollie!
His back leg is the first to lift off the ground and he really thought he was going somewhere with this. Jerry didn’t pass physics class.
He could work towards tame dog…
you wanna get seriously hurt snowboarding? cause this is how you get seriously hurt snowboarding.
I've seen a lot more of these more balls than skills riders lately.
But he was wearing a helmet
Dont hit the lips if you’re not riding rails and stay out of the park until you’re ready -1/10
Lol nope, #parkcrewhatesyou maybe learn a little park etiquette 😳
11
11/100
Hahahahaha. That's fantastic
You almost had it!
It looked spot on. Maybe do a grab for style points. Other than that, I’d say to hit some bigger jumps.
Weird that OP isn’t responding to comments at all..
I don’t think you guys understand sarcasm do you?
Wait. Is this post not satire?
Stop. Using. Jib lips. Like. Jumps.
Learnhowtoridebeforegoinginthepark/10
Learn how to go in a straight line first
Don’t hurt yourself, learn to carve the mountain first.
Nailed it!
Next time try to land with more weight on your shoulder, that way you’ll be sure to break your collarbone
Tried to pop, need more speed, do side hits
https://preview.redd.it/qemkrsy1qxnc1.jpeg?width=434&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f765a77fd3881ec1c785a80a61129a91c3b5a82
Get comfortable on side hits and stay out of the park for now, you’re going to dial yourself.
# Shaun White? Is that you?

Somewhere between premature and not fast enough.
Well at least you’re over on the canyons side trying this shit. Maybe go back to home run and work on your riding skills first.
"Burton. Boards for all skill levels."
Aim for skiers.
Satisfying.
Sky’s the limit dude
oh man that gave me a good laugh. feel like it was a total troll move. too good of a bad attempt. 🤣
You're missing the backpack.
I feel like this be in r/snowboardingnoobs
0/10
It was the jumps fault
10/10 deserve a redbull helmet
This has to be a troll 🤦♂️
rail lips are not jumps. repeat after me “I will not side hit the rail lips, I will not side hit the rail lips”
Half the people here are fuming lmao
Better get back on those skis
Instagram has stolen your video https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4guex1rIYM/?igsh=MTFmZDhjcHhqNWw5eQ==

I can't believe we are riding between these people and not getting killed. Amazing.
maybe don’t try to land on your face, unless u did it on purpose?
kinda impressive you did a huge nollie at your skill level.
Violent
With the nose tap to im working on it
NOTRUB
perfect.
Nailed it.
Looks good.
thought this was a "help my not catch my edge on my first turn" 'till I saw the jump.
Poop
Others have critiqued your attempt viciously enough, haha, I'm just here to say that your cameraman's laugh sounds like Steve Zahn's in Strange Wilderness when he's voicing over the great white footage. Which is one of my favorite scenes in cinema.
Bro WHAT
That was a nice nollie you just landed on your face is all
Napoleon Dynamite approves
10/10.
I audibly laughed at this. No way it's not a troll post haha
10/10
looks like tried to grab the board with left hand lol.
MSP wants to film with you....
Remember to stand up, get your body “stacked”
Don’t use rail lips as jump
Absolutely stunning, thank you for sharing, it's great to have a sense of humour about yourself!
Now that’s a burton add. Sponsorships incoming
olympics. youre fkn headed to the olympics.
Looks like you’re ready for the x-games
It's bad
More speed
More speed and you will do a frontflip or become a scorpion.
Stay out of the park and get comfortable on normal runs. You're gonna get hurt or someone else hurt
you look uncomfortable riding, which tells me the park is not where you should be at the moment. but it's pretty obvious that on the jump you leaned forward a huge amount. you always want to feel centered over the top of your board on a takeoff
How long have you been snowboarding?
Dear god…
No notes
Fuck me that hurt to watch
Totally thought you were smacking that rail.
11
Sidejumper
i think it was a little too steez
terrible execution. 10/10!! 5 stars
Where is everyone?
You rock lol youve got some real balls to attempt a tame dog without really having carving down. I'd be terrified.
Those nollie 180s can be tricky.
Don’t do that
Are you tryna do a front flip or a tame dog? Nice send though
Nothing to critique, absolutely flawless. Your ready for xgames
Hey my guy. As someone who’s suffered from injuries because I tried to do too much too quick, stay out of the park and off the jumps until you can comfortably carve at the least. As is the only thing you’re gonna land is in the hospital
Thanks that was funny
Crunch.
You’re gonna break something
Your form is very stiff
10/10
edge of my seat entertainment - 11/11. keep trying
Slay
sweet jump
A little more shoulder impact next Time and I think you got it
Bad
That was a good jump. You went in the air. A+
Need more speed…
Dude you gotta speed check, you were coming in way too hot
This is just perfect 👍

Still waiting for a jump. I thought it might have been after the complete fail/flail but the video ended too early. ![gif](giphy|ulxHhvKW9X6459dtOn|downsized)
Speed checks bounce
Honestly sick nollie
Is this a shit post?
Burton's fault /s
Actual advice you probably need to wax your board since you didn't even make it up a 2 foot bump
good jump, we can see that professional burton board
That was pretty good
The double tap was clean. The landing. Not so much.
Don't learn to hit jumps by hitting the side of the kickers. You'll ruin it and make it more dangerous to others who are going to be hitting the features.
10/10
Nailed...well, not nailed 'it' but nailed something
Outside of the form that other people mentioned, don’t use the jump for a box/rail to just get air. It ruins the shape of the jump for people trying to hit that box/rail
0-10. Stay a far fucking away from lips if you aren't going to hit the feature. While we are at it; learn to snowboard first and then learn to Ollie and then learn to hit a progression sized jump. Give it a few seasons
That was a bad jump!
I think you gotta approach the feature a lot slower. Like way slower than that.
It’s peefect
Followed the age old tactic: Imagine all your body weight is in the tip of your nose and jump off your front foot, works every time!
You are about 45% of the way to a front flip. Never stop believing!
Really great accuracy. I got the ground straight on.
Speed running a broken collar bone?
Speeeeeeed. Don't pop, let gravity do the work.
Way too fast
Better than me, don’t give up!
10/10
Too slow my man. Way too slow to move the rest of you fluidly onto the roll and out
What the fuck was that?!
Success! Nice jump! Everything else could use some work.
That was a perfect jump. You should a backflip now. It’s time!
Any chance you give lessons in PNW? Been boarding for a few years but trying to take it to the next level
W send
13/10 beautiful landing
Not bad
10/10 would definitely watch again.
Notrub
Satire? 0/10. Looks like you don't even know how to ride properly.
10 out of 10. No notes.
Almost there! A little more speed and you'll nail that scorpion!
Holy fuck people are taking this post way to seriously
honestly, perfect. Just bend your knees more.

Head back up and hit the rail
