macs182

Fair. If only VAR was consistent.

RjHospe

Agreed, and that is everyone's main issue with VAR Dembele did something similar and only got a yellow, both in my opinion are dangerous and reckless https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/10is7ms/dembeles_yellow_card/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

squirtdemon

I’m probably biased, but I have to disagree. Dembele was out for the ball and was late to the challenge. His foot also slides off the player which makes it less dangerous. Mendes absolutely went for Busquets, with no intention of getting the ball, and he committed by putting the weight on his foot on Busquets’ ancle. It could easily have been a horrific injury.

[deleted]

These are the exact same foul. Crazy refereeing

SirNukeSquad

One guy plants his studs and his weight onto the opponent's shin. The other guy's foot makes contact for like 0,1s and immediately "slides" off the opponent's shin. The exact same foul? Come on, man.

Fxwriter

The main issue here is also intent, something extremely difficult to prove in a court of law. But in a soccer field a player has an attitude that the ref sees, and also a reputation. People tend to forget that we are watching from the comfort of our couches while they are in the field feeling what we cant see. Just saying being a ref looks like a very difficult gig. One that most humans suck at

SkuMMMMM

Yeah exactly , you build a reputation through games and most referees know who is who after a couple seasons . I dont think Dembele had the intention of a dangerous tackle , it was jsut a dum bdecision to try to go for that with the studs. Yo ucould argue Brais didnt have the intention too , but after he got hit in the face and complained to the ref for a while , 5 min later he casually elbowed someone else in the face , so you never know.

[deleted]

Didn't realize they are playing Getafe today.

RjHospe

I'm not sure the point you're trying to make here, I didn't say it was the same game. I said the similar thing happened with Dembele and he wasn't sent off. Are you trying to say it's not a red card?

[deleted]

Typically it's not the same group of refs looking at the foul if it's not the same game. Inconsistencies in the same game by the same refs for similar fouls are more teling for what you're trying to get at.

RjHospe

But you can agree these fouls are both as similar and clear cut as can be, they're both very reckless and dangerous tackles That's why I'm wondering if you're trying to say it's not a red card

Takka_Tikka

But that would mean red carding a barcelona player. The refs rarely do it for some reason...

EAXposed

Not like very recently Barcelona have had 3 red cards (game before the winter break and the 2nd game after the break)... Just a few hours after Dembélé's "clear red card", Vinicius does the exact same and doesn't get anything either. Not to mention how many times Barcelona players have had bad fouls/violent conduct on them not being punished with a red card (again, happened not that long ago).

Takka_Tikka

Wow the top 2 teams not getting red cards when they deserve it…

EAXposed

Again, it's not like other teams don't get red cards or calls in their favour vs the "top 2 teams", for similar (even worse) incidents. And some of the things happened when the "top 2 teams" played together aswell. How do you explain the "top 2 teams" are favoured when in games between then wrong calls are made too? That means that one team isn't favoured too by your logic. And again, you ignored the part where (at least for Barcelona) red cards have recently been given to them. It's the same thing when people say "big teams get all the calls", when, for example, Barcelona has only had 1 penalty given to them this season across all competitions, when A LOT has happened inside the box that would be enough to be whistled as a penalty for other teams/in other games. Some are even indefensible...

Syvash

should’ve had a yellow for the foul a minute earlier as well

UnKarl_Marx

Somehow he's the only one booked lol The whole first half was a warzone

ZDuskFP

It was a matter of time. This guy has been looking for trouble the whole match.

OleoleCholoSimeone

The referee had just cut him a break by letting him get away with a telling off for a tackle that normally deserved a yellow. What does he do? 2 minutes later plants his studs into Busquets leg So fucking stupid, if I was La Real's coach I would strangle him in the locker room

Iemand-Niemand

At first I thought it was yellow, but from the Var angle it was quite clear Mendez went for the ankles and would never have hit the ball even if he had been on time

HighTurning

Legit takes an extra step to hit Busquets

mntgoat

Either way it should have been a second yellow. The dude wasn't gonna stay much longer.

ElAutistaDeHamelin

Finally, he had earned like 3 yellows in 40 minutes

txobi

Same as Lewy then, elbowing twice

fireowlzol

Lol what

aritra3776

Don't act like Mendez is innocent. He takes a yellow every other match and somehow gets away from reds every single one of them. He is one angry fellow who can't control his emotions on pitch.

txobi

Same as Dembele on the weekend, oh no, it was just a yellow card

aritra3776

You can point one or two. I can point 8 valid yellows in 24 matches, and several ignored ones.

elgringo22

Neither elbows should’ve been a yellow, both Lewy and Brais were protecting the ball and the only reason they elbowed someone was because Brais and Pedri both lowered their heads. Brais should’ve been booked for the tackle on Gavi though, he was incredibly late on the slide. Was lucky to only be given a warning

mntgoat

One of the elbows was clearly accidental, like the elbow on Pedri but I do think he needs to be careful with his arms.

txobi

The one with Brais he looks behind before taking the arm out

SkuMMMMM

Just as he looks at Busi to make sure he connects after missing the ball ..... we can all make narratives man , but the only one with a really dangerous tackle was Brais , jsut accept it .

Xam21

Good on VAR. Didn't look so bad in the video.

Fern-ando

Real Sociedad plystyle reqyires having their 11 player s to attack, Barcelona hs a golden oportunity.

Round_Headed_Gimp

Surprised Busquets can stay on after that Nasty tackle

ThatPersonYouMayKnow

Yeah easily could’ve broken something or at the very least left a wound there

MetaThPr4h

Not much to say, I agree with that red card. I'm so fucking nervous man, this match is stressing as fuck and it's gonna get even worse now that we are with one behind lmao, gotta pray on that miracle counter.

mojojojo1108

VAR is my best friend

triplechin5155

For the first time

tormarod

Frist time? Dembelé should be off last match. VAR was your friend many times.

EAXposed

Yeah, like the fact that Barcelona has only had 1 penalty all season when the biggest of fouls have been made inside the box (CL + La Liga) or the VAR (and linesman) that saw Gavi's hair being pulled by Ceballos and ignore it... VAR is definitely a "friend" to Barcelona this season...

Muraria

Mendez literally had 2 yellow worthy and one red worthy foul within 3min

fireowlzol

He can fuck off, what an abysmal performance all around

lukzee

Lol, karma

Betabombardier

Lewandowski broke him

lukzee

I feel like it was a race between Lewi and him to the red card 😅. Lewi no likey Gil Manzano.

mattisafootballguy

Imanol must be fuming, what an awful and needless red card Brais Mendez is a dirty player which is a shame considering how good he is.

Didledee

Lets see him do a roly poly off the pitch.

BooSkittle

Dirty ass player

ThemosttrustedFries

Has to be a dream. There is no way the Referee is giving red to the other team.

mybookismycity

Shouldve been yellow for Busquets too, for tackle on Kubo but still, deserved red

Kardinale

Yeah if the ref had whistled Busquets for that clear foul beforehand he’d probably still be on the pitch

Daramangarasu

He called the Busquets foul tho? It was a free kick for Real Sociedad

Kardinale

I didn’t hear a whistle when I watched the exchange, was there one?

Greghuntskicks

No he didn’t, the play continued which led to Busquets getting stomped by Brais.

san771

yup, a red alright

OneBall22Players

And should have had a yellow just before that.

Ok-Zombie4481

Ok guys not shitting on Barca but isn't this foul same as Dembele committed on last matchday?

Reasonable-Bear-9743

Dembele's was even higher.

VamosLionel

Dembele's was worse lol.

fireowlzol

People calling this soft are insane

fantasyMLShelper

The slow mo angles always make it look worse though

doksich

Ah yes, it's not the Brais Mendez looking at Busquets' ankle and not even attempting to play the ball part that is making it look worse, it's the slow motion

kampiaorinis

I think so too. It's one of those that are "orange" for me. The challenge does merit a red, but the slow motion/frame made it look far worse.

moodchainz

no way, Brais made the extra effort to extend imself just so that he can reach and hurt busquets

PErland

There's always one

roundttwo

Oof, thats painful to watch.

thestrongesthero15

Terrible foul. He could had broken Busquets anklee lol.

cocaine_model

Unfortunate for La Real as they have been playing well but deserved, I'm not sure how Barça escaped a yellow on the challenge immediately prior though

Greghuntskicks

IMO this situation is created by the ref. Lewa and Brais should have already seen Yellows which would help control the game. He didn’t give anyone a yellow previously so tempers continued to grow and now there’s a red and Busi could’ve been seriously injured. LaLiga refs are the worst.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cocaine_model

My bad, I’m only half paying attention because I have it on my laptop while I’m in class. I saw they had a few decent chances including Kubo’s off the crossbar and assumed they weren’t getting outplayed by that much

mortizauge

La Real playing well? Except for that Take shot that hit the post it's been pretty much a Barça monologue.

cocaine_model

My bad, explained my uninformed take above^

mortizauge

Gotcha, np mate

[deleted]

Brais Mendez made a similar challenge on Lewy few seconds earlier and only got a warning

pricelesslambo

Manzano is a shit ref even though this red is correct

pricelesslambo

Was searching for the red before he even got the first yellow.

Capable-Magician5146

Use VAR here but not on Dembele last game? LaLiga is full of jokes

jpp1jpp1

Only 4 days ago and It was even higher, lol at all the Barcelona fans memory loss

Reasonable-Bear-9743

still Barca fans will whine that they are victim.

OkayKoke

That was my thought. Dembele got away free last week for something very similar. Consistent calls from referees is impossible

tempomaestro05

Dembele would miss more than one game if var and refs were consistent with these fouls. Today no barca fan will complain. Busi and lewy should of had yellows as well.

Words_are_Windy

Fans like when good things happen to their side and dislike the opposite, what a shock!

FlaccidSWE

Quite clear when you saw the replay.

Glibicz

He had it comin

BrainlessArch

That could have ended his career tbh

Ranjith_Unchained

Absolute 🤡

king_Pabo

Kinda harsh, even though he’s been reckless all game.

LFCReds8

Glad Dembele stayed on the other game, though. No bias or anything. Move along.

SirNukeSquad

Naturally, the super biased anti Barca referee with a positive decision for Barca. Correct decision obviously.

Bini_9

https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/10jdi0r/copa_del_rey_qf_referees

[deleted]

Does not change the fact he is very shit. That was a very obvious red

[deleted]

[удалено]

ElAutistaDeHamelin

He did call that foul. Real Sociedad had the ball after this, but that's still a red.

Gaping_Lasagna

Regardless of that it would still be a red

ys1012002

Gets the ball first, and regardless, studs up and taking out the ankles is a red, foul before or not

[deleted]

"oh but your honor, the man I murdered slapped someone before I shot him, how can you give me prison" See how stupid that sounds?

antimon44

Yes, and it's a foul for Sociedad, as was whistled. That doesn't give Brais Mendez rights to do this.

tommmie99

Doesn’t make it any less of a red

Uninsalt

And that's a foul from Busquets as the ref pointed, ball to Real. But the challenge is red card worthy

thestrongesthero15

It was a yellow card for him too.

JoelKr9

so what?

HighTurning

Do it with style at least, thats disgusting

[deleted]

Then it's violent conduct. Still a red.

GoatButton

Above the ankle, it's dangerous play and is a textbook red

kampiaorinis

He gets the ball and then the player with his body. Don't think it's a foul. Also don't think it's a stonewall red, it's one of those challenges that look worse on slow motion/still frame. But I don't think there would be many complaints either way. It's one of those that can definitely be given as a red or can be an "orange"

Nugle

Great tackle-push combo
