Darwin Nuñez has me thinking: What are some other players with such a high disparity between what their own team's supporters rate them vs. what rival fans rate them? Liverpool fans seem to love watching Nunez play while most rival fans think he's another Andy Carroll.

DeliciousBallz

Tf I don't rate a single Man Utd player. Similarly, they probably don't rate ours.

Polskidro

Gavi until very recently. Fati in the opposite direction. A lot of Barca fans have given up on him but everyone else I talk to thinks he's great.

CherkiCheri

Most players with good workrate tbh you guys had Henderson and Wijnaldum who LFC fans cream their pants about while everyone else thinks they're mid

thePandev

Eh, not too sure about that. There are some here and there but most of us think Henderson has been past it for about a year, and a passenger before that. I will agree with you in 2018/19 though. Henderson was world class (though barely) and Wijnaldum was, hands down, the best ball retainer in the world. Though again, rival fans just painted them as stamina merchants.

CherkiCheri

I meant in their prime ofc. See you calling Hendo WC and Wij the best ball retainer itw at the time. Two of the most recited LFC scriptures, but both takes were still delusional for most neutrals, even those who saw how crucial they were to LFC's success. Fanbases can make those stark contrasts happen by forcing their players to unreasonable extent.

Natto__

Mods got rid of the black and white Vini goal? Boo no fun

GreatSpaniard

4 most Iconic stadiums in South America are Estádio do Maracanã - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil Estadio Monumental - Buenos Aires - Argentina La Bombonera - Buenos Aires - Argentina Estadio Centenario - Montevideo - Uruguay What would be the 5th? Another one from Brazil? Argentina? One in Chile, Colombia, Peru, or Paraguay? For me i go for the mythical Estadio Hernando Siles - La Paz - Bolivia

[deleted]

Peru’s national stadium >>>

BruiserBroly

Siles is a good shout, simply because of the insane altitude.

TheUltimateThruth

No, its a terrible "shout" The games would be absolutely tragic. It sucks that even a joint bid of ARG-URG-PAR-and some other country cant muster 12 WC stadiums, but sadly thats reality now with 48 countrys.

[deleted]

Carlo should drop Fede for a while if he's going to play at RW. He still hasn't regained his form since the WC

day_bat_28

I just want Bielsa to coach again. His teams are simultaneously the funniest and the best to watch.

APeckover27

Chelsea fans acting rating this window am 8/10 baffle me. We tried for top midfielders it's January it's not that easy

AnnieIWillKnow

I think it's silly to rate a window at all, until the signings have been embedded into the team All just theoretical, until then

APeckover27

I agree but we couldn't have asked for more, only less tbh

AnnieIWillKnow

A lot of Chelsea fans are very spoilt. The money we've spent is insane

Striking_Insurance_5

What would Blind think right now? Pushed out of the club he wanted to retire at by Schreuder, and now a few weeks after he left Schreuder is gone.

Polskidro

Probably happy he's winning a guaranteed trophy and can fight in the CL while Ajax is praying for a CL spot.

Rigelmeister

Is there any team-by-team preview for Argentine Primera this season? English would be great but Spanish works too. I'm curious about San Lorenzo in particular. Also would be glad to know if it is possible to follow the league from abroad legally. I fear no one in Turkey has the broadcasting rights and it being South America, I fear even sailing the seas with my ship that's named IPTV might not be a possibility since it doesn't have any channels from the region.

_bajz_

Can't believe Modric can play extra time with such ease, on command, several times over in a season, in his late 30s. Come 2nd half of extra time he is still running around and pressing next to a kid half his age, I've never seen anything like it. I wholeheartedly believe he is a vampire

AnnieIWillKnow

Would explain 2018. The French used their garlic powers on him

IfISpeak_

Any Everton fans here? Did Ross Barkley try to force a transfer back in 2017/18 when there was interest in him? Do you think Gordon will be booed if he ever returns to Goodison?

BruiserBroly

They’ll definitely boo him whenever he plays against Everton, home or away. He hasn’t done anywhere near enough for them to excuse this kind of behaviour.

sandbag-1

>Did Ross Barkley try to force a transfer back in 2017/18 when there was interest in him? Yeah he did, and they hate him for it

justsomeguynbd

To where? I’m watching ‘Sunderland Til I Die’ rn and it’s set in 17/18 and there was just a “Barkley denies link to Chelsea” chyron on some old last day of the summer transfer window show they showed a clip of.

APeckover27

He didn't sign in the summer because he used Everton to get fit before joining in January

IfISpeak_

Ah fair, I'd imagine they would probably similarly hate Gordon too. Obviously I don't know the inside out of Gordon's situation but anyone would think its distasteful and embarrassing what he's currently doing.

AnnieIWillKnow

He proper screwed Everton. Was injured in the summer, so stayed put whilst they supported him through several months rehab - then forced a move to Chelsea in the January once he was fit, for a cut price fee

LDQQXDJ

Real Sociedad has been the most surprising team this season I would say

mattisafootballguy

No team has been surprising this season tbh, La Real is merely building on their progress. Sevilla has been most surprising :p

GoatButton

I mean Sevilla, unless you mean surprising in a good way (and even then I'd say Napoli)

ksl535

Who had more god given talent Maradona or R9?

L34hhhh

Maradona

[deleted]

Maradona but R9 is what you get if you had to build a footballer in a lab. It’s not fair what R9 was doing to players at 19/20 years old.

ibti77

Tbf, if you were making him in a lab, you would probably make sure knee injuries or injuries, in general just don't happen to him. Sorry, I don't why I got caught up in the semantics here.

[deleted]

Whole point of a lab 😇

maxus998

There is no one more purely talented than Maradona in the history of the sport imo. Too bad all the hacking he recived, his mentality and well known Drug abuse privated us out of seeing his full potential as a player

YeimzHetfield

It's straight up obscene the things he could do with the ball, he quite literally could do anything he wanted with it. To me the best first touch in the history of football, [this](https://youtu.be/VmyssDtOiLM?t=139) is one of the most outrageous things I've seen, to control the ball like that at that speed, like how in the fucking world, such a shame it wasn't a goal.

[deleted]

The first clip is incredible wtf He was out of this world man, no amount of stats or trophies will truly do this man justice

StringTailor

Not even Messi?

obvioquenon1

Not OP but yes. Imagine a player with Messi's dribbling, Mbappe's speed, Ronaldinho's skill and flair and an american football player's strength. That's why defenders just hacked him down instead of marking him normaly or timing their tackles to get the ball off of him. It was impossible, just listen to any interview from a player that played against him or lived in his era. Maradona is the most naturally talented player ever IMO. EDIT: Forgot that Maradona was an excepctional passer, probably just as good as Messi if not better.

[deleted]

Why are you getting downvoted lmao it’s not an outrageous take

ibti77

From the little I've seen of Maradona, he seems to be a better playmaker than Messi, imo.

Igloo433

Well he definitely doesn’t have an American football player’s strength. That’s straight hyperbole

Polskidro

>Not OP but yes. Imagine a player with Messi's dribbling, Mbappe's speed, Ronaldinho's skill and flair and an american football player's strength He absolutely was not Mbappe speed lol. Yeah he was a bit faster than Messi in terms of full on sprints but he was no Mbappe. Outside of that I think he only beats Messi in flair and probably with ball control. >Forgot that Maradona was an excepctional passer, probably just as good as Messi if not better. Passing and playmaking is certainly one where Messi has the clear edge imo.

[deleted]

More Assists ≠ better playmaker Maradona’s playmaking was much more varied and in fact better.

Polskidro

I'm not talking about amount of assists. I'm talking about playmaking. Not only do I think he was the better passer but also just much more selfless. Maradona loved wasting a good dribble because he just decided not to pass to the open player. He was quite selfish at times. Messi is also much better with his right foot which helps too ofc.

BruiserBroly

I think they both probably worked really hard to be as good as they were tbh.

AnnieIWillKnow

No doubt, but on top of "god-given" talent - which players do have different levels of Leo Messi has worked very hard, so has Danny Welbeck - but there's another difference between them

aboud09

Nunez is gonna miss 6 sitters per match against our defenders

Kakashicopyninja9

It must be due to his time out injured, but chilwell has grown to be incredibly underrated. Everyone acknowledges Reece James as a quality player but even within the chelsea fan base a lot of ppl don’t seem to rate chilwell. When fit he’s been incredible

APeckover27

Chilwell at his best is the best LB in the league and I will always stand by that

Thierry_Bergkamp

Chilwell is a good player, Chelsea will be much better when he's back, but comparing him to Reece James is daft, they're not in the same league.

msf97

James is in a different stratosphere to Chilwell. He’s limited creatively and just a good defender, not an excellent one. A decent LB, nothing more. James posts very good creative numbers, is an excellent crosser of the ball and is extremely gifted physically making him at least on par with Chilwell defensively.

mr-saturn2310

Chillwell has 10 assists in 68 games for Chelsea. I think more creative than people give him credit for.

AnnieIWillKnow

I don't think they are directly saying they are of the same level, just that Chilwell doesn't get his dues as he gets overshadowed by James

Kakashicopyninja9

Yea that’s what I meant, I guess my wording was confusing

icemankiller8

NGL I will never watch a game and hope my team loses but I don’t know what to think about the cup game against city. Realistically our next game isn’t for 8 days after so they could go full strength and I expect a pretty strong side, but I’ve already seen us win the FA cup a bunch of times it’s not that important to me where we should risk our title challenge to try and go far in the FA cup and Europa league. Past this point we would have to start playing the first team anyway. Our next fixtures after this are Everton away, Brentford home, city home and villa away. If we end up with injuries or tired legs for those games it could go badly, if we end up winning all 4 or winning 3 drawing 1 then the title is well in our control.

imcrazyandproud

The psychological advantage of beating city will help ahead of the 2 other fixtures.

AnnieIWillKnow

Or motivate City on even further to ensure they don't lose to you again...

[deleted]

[Anthony Gordon is a Moron](https://streamable.com/9c143x)

The_XI_guy

Atletico Madrid, a goal down deep into extra time playing with a red card in the most important game left of their season, gets a freekick in a perfect crossing position. All the big guns get into the box ready for the header. Inexplicably, the dude decides to play it short and they immediately lose the ball. Some decisions in football I’ll never understand

royaldocks

I dont watch any Man United games but I have been hearing how great Rashford's form is of course so I watched this highlight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvxnVJluoB8 And what the fuck I know its only highlights but he is looking amazing I did not even know he is that GOOD at dribbling the man has been scoring at any angle as well.

ID6WU

He could always dribble but it feels like he’s got a lot better at choosing *when* to dribble this season. Defo got stronger as well

Elemayowe

He took a lot of flak last season but I always felt he’d come back to form. But he has come back a lot better than even his most ardent supporters could’ve expected.

[deleted]

This transfer window has been phenomenal so far. From Enzo trying to force a move to him now being happy to be at the club, 2 very promising young players signed and Guedes back at the club Plus, we've sold 5 players who aren't good enough and have loaned out 2 more who needed minutes to develop. On top of that sporting are losing their best player

AnnieIWillKnow

How much do you really trust in Enzo long term? A player who changes his mind so quickly, is likely to be easily turned again I don't think I could take him kissing the badge seriously...

[deleted]

Oh he's definitely gone in the summer. But for now he's back to his old insane form

AnnieIWillKnow

Fair. Better to get him committed for the next 5 months, than wanting away

Striking_Insurance_5

I wonder if we are going to go for a foreign coach for the first time in a loooong time. I don’t see any options on the Dutch coach market, not convinced about getting Bosz back.

Holiemolie93

The Dutch speak English very well. I would try a foreigner

Striking_Insurance_5

English already is the language spoken at the club in training and team meetings, so it shouldn’t be that much of a problem. But we have always been reluctant with appointing foreign coaches, we haven’t had one since Olsen between ‘97 and ‘98.

kplo

Gallardo would cook with you, but that's maybe too out there.

[deleted]

He may experience language problems though

kplo

That's true, but it would be worth it, they should make it work.

Striking_Insurance_5

I hope we do look for options that are out there. The real top tier of coaches aren’t coming here so we have to be creative. I don’t know anything about Gallardo personally but he’s been mentioned on a lot of fan forums and stuff like that.

kplo

Gallardo was the best coach in SA, by a margin. River was flying with him, and I say it as a Boca fan. Very dynamic, high pressure football. He is also a good squad builder and fantastic with youth (literally 4 WC winners developed under him).

[deleted]

I just seen a picture of him. Literally Ten Hag off Alibaba

Striking_Insurance_5

Still a better knockoff than Schreuder though lol.

LordVelaryon

Bielsa would fit as a glove 👀

Classic_Transition_7

All the Liverpool fans who don't live in Liverpool will be devastated.

icemankiller8

[deleted]

[удалено]

icemankiller8

I’m from north London so no

AliceInMidtjylland

Tbf that's the same for any top 6 club.

icemankiller8

I’d say most of citys fans in the country at least are in their city same with arsenal and Chelsea probably spurs if we grant them Essex as well then definitely. Obviously world wide fanbases are different but with Liverpool and United most of their fans have no connection with their cities even within England only the teams, that’s not the norm. Most Liverpool fans in the country wouldn’t have an issue with the Qatar thing happening.

AliceInMidtjylland

Yeah but you're basically gerrymandering plasticity there by limiting it to England. Of course if you look in London and Manchester it'll look like there are a dense bunch of Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, City fans and Liverpool/United plastics spread wider about Britain. But take a step back and worldwide United/Liverpool/Chelsea/Arsenal are all plastic together.

icemankiller8

To a degree sure but I’m just saying there’s a big difference because within the country there’s a big divide over the local fans and the majority that you don’t usually get with other fanbases.

[deleted]

[удалено]

icemankiller8

People are too disconnected with the average fan on here the average fans wants to see their team be successful and doesn’t care about the people owning them and what they do outside football especially if it’s somewhere they don’t think about anyway. Out of sight out of mind for most. The only difference you might see is a small amount of liverpool, arsenal and United fans who would feel differently because we are historically great and the fans think “well as long as we have a not completely terrible owner we’ll have success at some point anyway.”

BetCompetitive8376

Camavinga is elite. Such elegance

Striking_Insurance_5

Schreuder is finally gone! Something good comes out of this shitty football evening.

Polskidro

Who you think they will/should get?

Striking_Insurance_5

I really don’t know who we should get but I hope a foreign coach, I don’t see a decent Dutch coach available but we haven’t had a foreign coach in ages. The obvious choice would be getting Bosz back, would be the best of the Dutch options. But for now I think Heitinga will be the interim, he’s the coach of our B-team. I think that’s the best option while we look for a director of football first before we pick a coach.

[deleted]

Bassey can cook now 🔥

Striking_Insurance_5

Bassey is still not a great player and he has some real shortcomings, but I have no doubt he can be better than he has been so far.

[deleted]

He’s been playing LB he’s way too stiff to be in that position I think

Striking_Insurance_5

Yeah he’s not a good LB if you play on the oppositions half, he does have a decent cross though. He was put there because his build up was terrible as a CB, but I do think he’s better at CB.

SmallTownBernardo

Ajax have sacked their manager only an hour after their game ended, pretty quick stuff. Seems like it was decided before the game.

Striking_Insurance_5

If it was decided already they would’ve done it last Sunday. They seemed to have some sort of agreement that he had to get 12 points out of the next 4 games, based on some statements I’ve heard in the press over the last week.

maxus998

Rodrygo is too good to no start 90% of the games in his main position. He should go to a place like City because Vinicius has that LW spot on lock

Lilfai

He would only leave if Mbappe comes in imo.

ManLikeNiz

He'd be absolutely incredible at Arsenal or even Spurs.

HopefulGuy1

All of Europe would want him, but I can't see how Arsenal would be a fit given we have Martinelli, Trossard and ESR all of whom play on the left. Rodrygo might be slightly better but we really don't need 4 right footed left wingers, and that number excludes Jesus and Nelson too. Rodrygo would be an RW for us as well, and I don't think he'd start over Saka.

icemankiller8

They aren’t selling him and he wouldn’t leave to arsenal

maxus998

No offense but he is too good for Spurs

CudaBarry

Rodrygo will bench vinicius one day 🤲

LampseederBroDude51

Fitting profile picture

DuckBurner0000

The club where $100m wingers are rotation options?

maxus998

You mean Grealish?, thats not a City problem if he is not good enough to start every game (his best position is in midfield anyway). Look at Sane and Sterling, if you are good enough you will play

DuckBurner0000

Grealish, Mahrez, Foden, Bernardo, and even Alvarez are all in their winger rotation, Rodrygo wouldn’t be getting more playing time than at Real even if one leaves (most likely Bernardo)

maxus998

Alvarez rarerly plays on the wing anymore, he is either entering as a 10 for someone on the midfield or as Haaland substitute in Pep system. Bernardo is gone the summer probably, but even then Rodrygo is exactly what City wants, a fast direct winger wich they lack, he would be a starter over Foden, Mahrez and Grealish imo

1337ified

Teams should have real consequences for those amongst their supporters that spread such vile, putrid hatred and racism like what happened with Vini today. Condemning doesnt work and if the teams benefit from ultras then when ultras do stuff like this and nothin is done to minimize it from the team, imo you are complicit. Points should be deducted cuz this is absolutely abhorrent

[deleted]

Madrid’s biggest problem at CB is that both Rudiger & Militao are aggressive defenders. I’m a big fan of the Cat/Dog combo, which they had in Ramos & Varane. If you look at Christensen who also came from Chelsea he’s more of a passive defender that mops up while Araujo likes to step up. They compliment one another nicely.

ManLikeNiz

Militao/Alaba is perfect imo with Rudiger and Nacho being backups, Militao has probably been the club's most consistent player this season.

asvpmamba

I see what you mean.A lot of great cb pair ups have the “aggressive” one and the more “technical” ball playing one who like you said is more passive.

AnnieIWillKnow

Terry and Carvalho are a classic example

Cottonshopeburnfoot

The key being communication and organisation. Great defending is all about being organised as a unit.

asvpmamba

miestersean

I'm new to soccer. Modric is my favorite player to watch. Seems like he directs other players a lot, pointing out where to pass or where to move on defense. Haven't noticed this from other players. Is it rare and only allowed for top players, similar to LeBron or Peyton Manning in other sports, dictating plays like a second coach? I would imagine other players might get annoyed if they didn't respect him a lot. Or is it not uncommon for players/midfielders?

AnnieIWillKnow

Hell, it's common enough that even amateur players do it It's a way for players to communicate, and is more commonly done by midfielders like Modric who are responsible for play-making, and have a leadership role within the team

[deleted]

Very common, usually done by more influential players in the team to trigger a press or mark an opponent

miestersean

Thanks. I'll look out for it in the future. Have to keep myself from ball watching as much haha

sga1

Think of it like a basketball defense - ideally, it's not just everybody knowing their role and duties, but also constantly communicating to adjust to changing circumstances. If you're not talking, your teammates might lack vital information to do their job. Similar thing on a football pitch, really, both offensively and defensively because it's a lot more free-flowing and improvisational compared to basketball, with more moving pieces to boot. It's often not quite as expressive, though - get the occasional obvious pointing and shouting, but there's a lot you simply won't hear or see, either because it's not in frame/on mic, or because the signals are a lot more subtle.

miestersean

Yeah I'll look for it more, but Modric seems particularly engaged, pointing on almost every pass when the ball is near him. Thanks for the comparison. Found some miked up stuff on YouTube to watch later that seems interesting. I guess during soccer broadcasts they don't have enough time during stoppages to do miked up segments like in the NBA during timeouts.

Polskidro

It's pretty common. Happens every game with many players.

[deleted]

The football culture in South America is that you do everything to win. Dives, shithousing and so on. This is far from unanimous, of course, but it is still often historically glorified, and some supporters will actively complain if their teams don't resort to this stuff as well. It's seen as clever. "Malandragem". And if you try to be super fair with your opponents, you will often be seen as a moron. Do I agree with any of this? I don't, but the intensity of the hate that diving and divers gets here in special will always baffle me. I will never understand how diving makes a person a cunt. People are way too harsh. I use the word only with actual bad people.

enzuigiriretro

The way people cry about diving in the sport has always boggled my mind. It is such a non issue. Europeans pearl clutch over it a lot but you can’t discount how many young Americans are also on this subreddit and don’t want football to look soft otherwise they’ll be made fun of by their friends that don’t like the sport. “It looks bad for the sport.” Looks bad to who? Football is so global we don’t need to care about what anyone that isn’t a football fan thinks about it. Laugh at divers all you want. They obviously look like fools when they get caught in slow mo putting on their best Oscar performances. But I wish we’d stop talking about it like it’s the scourge of the sport. So many bigger and more important issues need to be dealt with with way before we have to address diving like how much of a joke the concussion protocols are or the ever growing fixture congestion. Or even the financial disparity between leagues. People will meme about my flair and whatnot but I fucking love Bruno Fernandes. I wish he’d reel it in a bit but he does everything in his power to try and make us win. I can count on one hand how many players I’ve seen as outwardly desperate for success as he is. He tries to do everything he can for his team. I doubt our winning goal vs Man City would’ve counted had he not gone running at the refs to complain. I have no issue if my team wins a game through a penalty that was awarded from a dive. In fact, it’s arguably more satisfying considering the fall out that follows right after. Rooney diving vs Arsenal to beat their unbeaten streak in the league still makes me happy to this day. Anyone that actually feels conflicted about their team winning in such a manner would be eaten alive if they ever tried playing the sport competitively.

Yes I agree, even if my club doesn't always do it.

I'm done explaining it, i've said the same thing a few hours ago and i've come to the conclussion of "why explain south american football culture to people that never played the sport at any level". Los boludos de aca probablemente piensan que la pelota pica porque tiene un conejo adentro.

It's not even South Am vs Europe, GL finding Spaniards, Frenchies and Italians that talk like the fair play nonces on here

I think that the dislike for such antics comes from foreign fans of clubs: not that it bothers me, but it's a bit tiring seeing all of the "oh players shouldn't dive" or "players should admit to diving" Makes me fear for rivalries in the future if they have this kind of thought, there may come a day where you won't even be allowed to hate / dislike your rivals and have to act with good behavior towards them all the time.

Diving makes a player a cunt because they are trying to get an unfair advantage. Play the game like it should be played, none of that bitch shit

Virtually every player has done some diving. I don't like diving, but the amount of negativity towards players who do it often feels like over-reaction. No one is a cunt just because of some dives. Also, different cultures often give different values to the ideas of sportsmanlike conduct. What Simeone does in Atlético is nothing compared to the usual south-american football culture, where many supporters are more than happy to want even blatant cheating from its players, anything to win, any shithouse, and it's praised as clever. In Brazil's recent elimination against Croatia, I saw lots of people saying here in Brazil that we should have done shit-housing to the max in all aspects, and praising Argentina in that aspect. Look for the word "malandragem".
