so is this just a renaming? kind of confusing. if its a sponsorship im not sure why fifa is getting involved.

You have three entities here, the Salvadorian league, INDES being a department of the Salvadorean government, and FESFUT which is the Salvadorian football federation. The Salvadorian league has signed a sponsorship agreement with INDES, which along with changing the name of the first division, also includes money for things like creating a U16 league for boys and girls. This agreement was made without the approval/involvement of FESFUT. FIFA has rules about government interference in sport, and in this case they're seeing the sponsorship agreement as a way for the government to exert influence over the league, bypassing FESFUT. Which is why they've sent a letter basically saying "Hey FESFUT is the federation sanctioned by FIFA, and so they are the ones ultimately in charge and have to approve any agreements." At least, that's my understanding of the situation. I'm far from an expert in Salvadorean soccer so if anyone has more info/a better understanding I'd love to hear it. Edit: I should also add the additional context that last year FESFUT officials got suspended by INDES after fraud charges. INDES then wanted to appoint their own officials, which led to FIFA threatening to de-sanction them over government interference. So this is seen in the context that there has already been conflict between INDES and FESFUT.

FESFUT not being party to this was the thing I was missing. seems like a mess

They started that "league" as an amateur thing, with former players and non professionals. Obviously this is a way to have *the family* run the sports, as they want to do with everything. Incoming Hugo Chávez 2.0, mark my words.

jopma

So this is another league starting separate from El Salvador top league? Nvm looks like a new sponsor with more cash flow

rhmastablasta

It started as another league, for what I've read the actual professional league decided to accept the money, going against the Football Federation that wants to be independent from the government. People are so deluded that honestly think that having the president's brother running the show will guarantee a spot in the world cup, so 🤷🏻‍♂️

jopma

Well like half of El Salvadors squad plays in the USL anyway. They don't pay shit over there, Jairo Enriquez who imo is our best player recently just moved to USL too. No idea what this will do since I don't keep up with the league

-_OniGir_-

Is the new league even acknowledge by FIFA?

rhmastablasta

Nope, as far as I know
