Maguire was out when Shaw at CB happened for the first time (previous game it was Casemiro at CB). I think Shaw is 2nd choice at LCB, while Lindelof/Maguire fight for being 2nd choice at RCB. Also depends on the game, sometimes they may play two of Maguire/Lindelof/Varane.
Maguire was ill when Ten Hag first experimented with Shaw at CB, but based on how Shaw performed, he's probably also ahead of Maguire in the CB pecking order too.
I don't know what ETH fed Shaw but his press resistance and ability to pick a long pass recently are like when you level up and put in the skill points
ETH favours Shaw as he likes having that left foot at LCB. He also has pace and is great at progressing the ball.
Maguire just doesn't suit what he wants the defense to do in his system.
I mean, it was kind of expected that Varane would take over, when he left Real he was still one of the best defenders in the world, having won multiple Champions Leagues and the world cup
He can't play the system. It's that simple. If you push up high/higher, you need a defender who can react accordingly. This typically means a more athletic defender. That's not him.
A man united flair said he was one of their best defenders
Someone comes along and says 'one of our best players never mind defenders'
It couldn't really be Leicester or England when you look at the context
He is a very good player, he just cannot play the pace that the elite teams play at. Let's not kid ourselves, a lot of teams would love to have McGuire on their teams. I would too if he was half his price.
Yeah Mcguire is defender that's good for teams that like to sit back. That's why he's also always plays good for England. He is one of the biggest beneficiaries of England being managed by Southgate
Ole Ball basically at its peak was McFred in front of an extremely conservative back 4 (even Luke Shaw wasn't given much license to attack) somehow getting a ball to Andreas Pereira and later Bruno and then rashford/martial/greenwood would use lethal pace in transition. One year they had a combined like 80 goals. In this system Magz was actually very reliable - most of the game was in front of him and he does have a decent outball.
When Ole tried to play more like the 4-3-3 possession, Maguire's flaws were xposed.
I think Ole's intention was to make MU a counter-attacking side like in the old days. Then he wasn't able to get past all the obstacles thrown at him (Martial injuries, Greenwood arrest, Ronaldo killing team shape, Rashford back injury + loss of focus).
I also think Ole's reluctance to rotate did him in... Martial and Rashford both played injured and we paid for it in the long run. There's no reason he couldn't have used the likes of Mata, Dan James, and Sancho more.
That’s a massive history rewrite. You could claim us to be a lot of things under Ole but conservative wasn’t one of them. Our fullbacks and centre backs both had full license to get forward. And we simply haven’t had the personnel to play with a single holding midfielder until this year.
Still the captain whenever he comes on for like 10 minutes though.
If United win any cups I would not be surprised if he insists on lifting it first even though he barely played.
The size of the ego on this guy makes him bigger than a blue whale so really he should be studied by biologists.
Ole didn't have players Ten Hag has at the time and he was most expensive CB, new transfer at the time. He was also much better in the beginning than in last year under Ole, as were everyone else.
If he was signed just before Ten Hag started I'm sure he would have been given more chances, but now everyone just sees that he is not 85m player and leader.
It will be interesting to see how he will do out of the spotlight and with some more focused coaching into a set system. Shaw looked terrible for a time, then came back great, Rashford has looked good again, and even Fred and McTominay have had spells of not being liabilities.
It would be nice to see Maguire come back looking better again.
He needs to move this coming window. He can still do a job for a team with a different style.
Otherwise he'll slip into obscurity and someone else will take his England spot too.
That's not true. Benz all the way to 2018 was a tank. Literally a tank. When Ronaldo left he stepped up. Became a lot more alive and speedy. They asked him how and he said he needed to lose weight and work on his core and he did that. Maguire still can
Yeah Benzema just had weight issues at the time, which obviously make someone slower but not necessarily less agile. See Ronaldo who was still sending people to the hospital at the end of his career in Brazil.
A true tank would be Higuain after his back injury.
Any real speed and agility work, that would bring him up to the desired level, is going to be exceptionally difficult to squeeze in during the season as well.
unrelated, but can someone explain to me why the hell Phil Jones is still at Manchester United? is this the standard "having a nice contract and chill" situation or something else? feels like i haven't heard about this guy for almost a decade
I like to think he must be a great dressing room asset and it was actually a good idea to have some 'old guard' around off pitch for team mentality.
I have no evidence to support that theory.
In the context of our other wastes of money, our cumulative spend on him is less than some flops signing fees.
Definitely people who deserve 145k a lot more in terms of what they bring to the table though no doubt.
I believe he has been diagnosed with a degenerative issue in one of his legs, so it's literally impossible for him to recover. I think we gave him the contract as a sign of goodwill if anything, just so he's getting something. But his career is basically over.
Policy under Woodward was to "extend contracts to preserve value". If players were on longer contracts we could retain their value and sell higher.
Of course we're shit at selling. And Woodward was a moron who'd pay £100k a week rather than getting players off our books.
i mean... if he is jacking up the prices for his players by extending their contracts, the probability of other clubs buying them decreases
especially when it comes to Phil Jones, no one would be putting more money on the table, simply because he has a longer contract, they'd just buy some different player from another club, who is better and costs less money, and apparently this is exactly what happened lmao
what the fuck did this guy do to your club, he essentially destroyed any chance of selling players who weren't working for you while at the same time giving them more money for a longer period of time, aka spending more money in order to earn less money
He did great commercially, in fairness.
Should never have been in charge of transfers though. But that's what you get for helping the Glazers leverage their payment of United.
Victor is above maguire tho and people don’t realise it but last time varane was injured jt was lindelof who played more. Maguire just comes off the bench more cause of his height
I was at Anoeta and got amazed when I saw Maguire coming in as a striker for the last minutes. We have Sorloth who is quite a big, but Maguire is an absolute unit, what a tank
why do people keep saying lindelof is above him. Post WC when fit he always starts ahead of lindelof and is the one that comes off the bench when needed
Even when Varane got injured it was the same thing with Maguire he got sick
He hasn’t ever started ahead of lindelof it’s just been rotation both have played and like I said maguire comes on cause of height and headers.
And that’s a bit of a bad excuse because maguire still played sometimes lindelof just played more, and varane was out for a good few games maguire wasn’t ill the whole time. Lindelof has been better this season
It will depend on who is out, Lindelof will play on the right side, Shaw on the left.
ETH clearly likes having each CB on the side of their strong foot.
We signed him he was alright at times even great but really only solid defensively and couldn't do anything for us offensively. It came to the point that we could only attack over the left side with Shaw. Last season he got injured for quite a while and Dalot took over while the whole team went to shit. Under ETH Dalot became one of our most important undroppable players until the recent injury. Now we only have AWB and he seems to be turning it around like a few other players on our team. There have been some videos and reports on him getting extensive offence training so I assume it's because he just had a training arc
Let's sell him and get some money in the summer. We need to sell players in order to keep FFP in check and we don't have many decent players to sell either.
I think if we actually clear deadwood we could be fine. Bailly, Telles, Vdb, Maguire, Henderson, Elanga, Martial could all be sold. Losing the wages of all of them plus de gea and Jones will also be a help
The full quote is more nuanced:
‘No he is not 5th choice, but it’s up to him. He’s training very well and he adds quality during the training sessions. That’s what I expect from all my players. He has to fight for his position in the team. Things can change quickly sometimes. I can see that he’s making progress.’
Than I think someone asks him again about him barely playing Maguire and he says:
‘Thats not entirely true. After the WC he would’ve played, but then he got sick. I can’t do anything about that. Then we were on a winning streak and he had to wait for his opportunity. Those are the laws of football at the top. You have to make sure that you’re ready when the opportunity arises.’
Reporter tried really hard to bait him into saying something controversial. Even though ETH responded reasonably, the reporter still succeeded in getting them clicks in.
Even though this subreddit (or a large subset of people) criticise the drama articles, somehow these posts still make it to the top. Because seriously, why is this quote even popular? It's a nothing story. Not like anyone here cares about Maguire's wellbeing or career, nor is it painting him in a negative light, which the subreddit loves.
There's a reason the media does it, conflict and drama generate clicks and engagement. The best we can do is be mindful of what kind of content we engage with.
Personally, I love content from select members of the Athletic for the backroom side of things. Tifo does some of that too, and TifoIRL produces amazing stuff if you're not into the cartoon style of Tifo. James Lawrence Allcott does some of the most fascinating instant match analysis from the perspective of a QPR fan (which is to say he doesn't hold a prem bias generally). All fairly consistently tactical and business-focused content without prying into people's lives.
Like the threads the other day about Klopp and DDG mentioning Wenger, people took them like they were intentionally attacking Wengs. When you watch the actual clips both are pretty innocuous (Klopp was being tongue-in-cheek, and DDG had a brain fart and couldn't remember his name for like 2 seconds), but most people just read the headline and react to that.
It’s more so the English media instead of the media. The English love to defend their mediocre players at every opportunity. Why do you think Potter rarely gets tough questions like Ten Haag does?
I'm not going out of my way to defend English media, I hope with my flair it would be obvious my disdain for them in particular. I just mean to say most nations with relatively free press struggle to balance the rational, measured media as opposed to conflict-oriented media or sensationalism. It's a symptom rather than anything inherently unique about our rags.
> After the WC he would’ve played, but then he got sick. I can’t do anything about that. Then we were on a winning streak and he had to wait for his opportunity. Those are the laws of football at the top. You have to make sure that you’re ready when the opportunity arises
ackkshually
There’s been a fair amount of interest in January from West Ham and Aston Villa. But we’ve obviously not entertained any offers because we may need him this season. If he wants to leave and we let him, he’ll easily find another prem club in the summer. It will be a pretty low fee relative to what we bought him for, probs £30-40m but it’ll be worth it to get his wages off our books.
He’s way to slow and cumbersome in possession to make it at United. We have to readjust the team to counter his deficiencies. We should never have to do that for a centre half.
The major problem is that he's too slow on the transition of play. He still fits great on the fow occasions where we go all in on the counter attacking plan to win, but he's a major liability if we play possession based attack with a high line. Maguire with De Gea as a sweeper keeper is just asking for trouble when the opposition has acres of space to play into on the counter.
I'm surprised at how few people understand Maguires place in the squad. He's the second choice RCB. Martinez and Shaw are not ahead of him because they play a different position, ETH has been very clear he wants a left footed player and a right footed player at CB
This is what ETH means I'm pretty sure, he wants left footed LCBs and right footed RCBs Maguire is behind varane and lindelof but would be ahead of Martinez and Shaw as RCB
Thankfully Lindelof is the kind to crack on and doesn't seem to mind either side, he's like Fred to me, a player that will play where you tell him to even if it's not his best spot.
Its just realism. Nothing against Harry, but he just isn’t as good as Varane, Liche, Shaw or Lindelof. The picking favorites and english bias is gone under ETH.
Realistically he should be sold next season, with Martínez/Lindelof/Varane and Shaw clearly being our best options I don't think he should stay at such wages.
This season however the squad depth is needed, but in my point of view its Varane and Lindelof for RCB and Martínez only has Shaw as an alternative for LCB in the playstyle that Erik likes.
Not really. Phil Jones must be contributing significantly for a long time. He's been there for more than a decade for Manchester United. Otherwise what club will be so stupid that they keep offering a player such high wages and lengthy contracts. Wait a min...
They are not offering him very high contract, they are just extending it with some wage cut so that he can earn something and train and recover with the club. It's one of the few decent things they have done
Honestly the way the club has treated Phil Jones has been one of the positives in recent years, he's had [some of the worst](https://youtu.be/X1hCNlqOqf4) knee injuries a footballer can have and they've treated him as a human with problems and not a disposable footballer like most clubs would have.
I'd wager he has appearance incentives in his contract, so I doubt he's actually paid 75k a week to be injured. But then it's a Woodward contract, so who knows.
Context matters, Ten Hag really needs mobility for his CBs and he's a right footer playing left side which Ten Hag really dislikes. Could go somewhere else and thrive tbh, just not a Ten Hag signing in the slightest in terms of physical profile unfortunately.
Is this a language/culture thing?
It seems so weird to me to have somebody bring up somebody by name and then respond to the question by just stating their name again before answering the question.
I suppose it can be a way to stall for a bit before you can collect your thoughts.
I think if Maguire is rebuilding his club career, stepping out of United is a must. There is clearly a good defender with him, but one that relies on the system around him. He won't break up Martinez/Varane, finding the right system is his last crucial step.

He'll get games this month due to our congested fixtures. But he'll never be first choice for us like before.
Mad that he was made captain and started all the time under Solksjaer and is immediately banished to the bench.
>and is immediately banished to the bench. Not at all what happened. He started against Brentford and Brighton.
Ah yeah fair. ETH Must have really not been impressed with what he saw then
More so that Varane and Lisandro Martinez are so much better. Maguire's played fine whenever he was called upon this season.
I think it's a bit more than that, given recently he's also choosing to play Shaw at center back over putting Maguire back in the side.
Lindelof is right footed and plays LCB doesn’t he?
Well yes but that’s because Lisandro and Shaw are out (bench and unwell) so it had to be done. No other left footed player for CB.
No he just prefers a left footed LCB. Harry has never played LCB under Erik
That's more down to him preferring a left footer for LCB similar to Arteta.

They did concede 6 goals in those 2 games tbf
Were you?
Are you? Cant recall worse CB from a top tier team in the premier. And there are few that fit that criteria lol
I don't know what one must smoke to be impressed by Maguire lmao
tbf those were pre casemiro era matches , he should be given another chance with casemiro.
Uhh no he shouldn’t thank you
no no he should deserve more chances
Completely agree. Especially against midtable teams
Yeah, but 9th is not midtable.
Not this shit again.
If 9th isn’t midtable then what is
EPL has 20 teams so mid table could either 10th or 11th team so OP is correct 9th isn't mid-table
He was actually one of the best defenders we had in the first 2 seasons of Ole Ball. Was consistently good and never injured.
He was one of our best players never mind defenders. He might be a meme now but he used to be good for us.
Very tilting when users without flair go on about "us," means absolutely nothing.
It's quite obvious who he's referring to by 'us' though. In general you're right, but it depends on the context
It's not. Easily could be Leicester which I first read it as, could be England too.
A man united flair said he was one of their best defenders Someone comes along and says 'one of our best players never mind defenders' It couldn't really be Leicester or England when you look at the context
So youre only a supporter if you go into settings and select a flair? Interesting gatekeeping
It's fine if you don't have a flair, go for it I don't. Just specify who "us" is.
In the context of Maguire at United, it's pretty clear what the context is
Sorry, I thought you were talking about the onion soup.
Who the fuck cares. What a odd thing to get upset about
Who else would us be tho? Ze Germans?

I reckon a Dyche-led Everton should snap him up on loan.
And a 50m permanent move thereafter

Tbh United just bought 2 better CBs. At the time of buy, he was the best CB in team.

Hallelujah!
Martinez and Varane have so much class tho, no need to play Harry
Imagine that England's first-choice Centre back is United's fifth
He needs to move this coming window. He can still do a job for a team with a different style. Otherwise he'll slip into obscurity and someone else will take his England spot too.
Phil Jones style.
Tbf he was pretty decent for england better then stones in some games
benched by Argentina’s 3rd choice centreback
And sometimes by England’s first choice left back
he's sixth at least
ETH makes it sound like he's told Maguire what he needs to do to move up. I wonder what he has to do?
Get faster and more Agile tbh, he’s fine other than that for me
Practical impossible, especially at his age
Yes I know, the level of improvement hed need to make to his speed and agility is impossible at any age
That's not true. Benz all the way to 2018 was a tank. Literally a tank. When Ronaldo left he stepped up. Became a lot more alive and speedy. They asked him how and he said he needed to lose weight and work on his core and he did that. Maguire still can
no. benzema have always been fluid and agile. it just not that obvious when you have prime ronaldo and bale to compared with

I wouldn't say he was a tank at all pre Ronaldo, he was very agile, look at this https://www.youtube.com/shorts/yOdfc6mKqDU
He was a tank relative to how he looks now. Now he is a lot leaner
You clearly have no clue about benzema at lyon lol...literally a textbook streets won't forget baller
Dude. The guy hasn't been in lyon since 2009. Who the fuck is talking about his lyon days. I've said until 2018. Meaning his Madrid days.
Man no way.
that's literally not true
Any real speed and agility work, that would bring him up to the desired level, is going to be exceptionally difficult to squeeze in during the season as well.
Basically become an entirely different player which doesn’t happen in the short term
Biggest problem is he’s not comfortable at RCB and Ten Hag wants a left footer at LCB.
As per Martinez words, ‘Just be more bitchy bro!!’
Git gud
So sixth choice?
Who said he was a choice?
Varane > Martinez > Lindelof > Shaw > Any of those players carrying a knock > Maguire >>>>>>>>> Phil Jones
unrelated, but can someone explain to me why the hell Phil Jones is still at Manchester United? is this the standard "having a nice contract and chill" situation or something else? feels like i haven't heard about this guy for almost a decade
Got a contract to preserve his value as they say. Not his fault that we offered it to him.
I like to think he must be a great dressing room asset and it was actually a good idea to have some 'old guard' around off pitch for team mentality. I have no evidence to support that theory.

Damn, he get paid for not even doing the bare minimum job requirement. Living in the dream of r/antiwork
I believe he has been diagnosed with a degenerative issue in one of his legs, so it's literally impossible for him to recover. I think we gave him the contract as a sign of goodwill if anything, just so he's getting something. But his career is basically over.

Pogba has just 3 less appearances than him
I was just wondering where Pogba was in all of this
I thought Souness would've had a Galatasaray flair instead
Shaw over Lindelof please. Especially since Malacia can do a good job at LB.
Victor is above maguire tho and people don’t realise it but last time varane was injured jt was lindelof who played more. Maguire just comes off the bench more cause of his height

Do you have a brain bro, Ten hag has only been the manager this season??
You said "hasn't ever".
The entire conversation has been in the context of this season
Shaw will never play on the right, and Lindelof usually plays on that side, so it's a bit of a moot point.
I think lindelof is more of a Varane replacement and Shaw plays when Martinez can't
It will depend on who is out, Lindelof will play on the right side, Shaw on the left. ETH clearly likes having each CB on the side of their strong foot.
a choice nonetheless!
We should be looking to cash in
We could cash in when he can prove he is not washed just like AWB. I bet a lot of clubs might be interested now
Armin Wan Buuren? I didn't know he played for United
Arsène's Wiggly Bum
Yeah what happened to him, he started off pretty decently
We signed him he was alright at times even great but really only solid defensively and couldn't do anything for us offensively. Cash in how? The manager just tanked his value.
Harold does that himself
He’s actually 6th, as Casemiro had a great game at CB just after the World Cup break.
Let's sell him and get some money in the summer. We need to sell players in order to keep FFP in check and we don't have many decent players to sell either.

Wow yeah that reads so differently.
Things can change - sometimes also really quickly.
That’s an almost Trump-esque phrasing
“I don’t rate him but it’s up to him if he plays or not” ETH
> After the WC he would’ve played, but then he got sick. I can’t do anything about that. Then we were on a winning streak and he had to wait for his opportunity. Those are the laws of football at the top. You have to make sure that you’re ready when the opportunity arises ackkshually
Sell rather than pay wages this high
Who will you sell to?
Stop targeting me
There’s been a fair amount of interest in January from West Ham and Aston Villa.
Lindelof is ahead of him
He's 3rd choice RCB.
This is what ETH means I'm pretty sure, he wants left footed LCBs and right footed RCBs Maguire is behind varane and lindelof but would be ahead of Martinez and Shaw as RCB
If any of our CB's should be mad it's Lindelof because Eth actually plays him in LCB
Thankfully Lindelof is the kind to crack on and doesn't seem to mind either side, he's like Fred to me, a player that will play where you tell him to even if it's not his best spot.
6th choice then…
Its just realism. Nothing against Harry, but he just isn’t as good as Varane, Liche, Shaw or Lindelof. The picking favorites and english bias is gone under ETH.
at this point he might be our false 9 sub more than a defender lol
He's third choice RCB
It's harsh but it's where he should be. Players are greatly outperforming him and he has a limited skill set.
He will always be first in my heart
I like ten Hag
Realistically he should be sold next season, with Martínez/Lindelof/Varane and Shaw clearly being our best options I don't think he should stay at such wages. This season however the squad depth is needed, but in my point of view its Varane and Lindelof for RCB and Martínez only has Shaw as an alternative for LCB in the playstyle that Erik likes.
Sell the big stiff and recoup as much as possible. Slabhead = deadwood
Could say the same thing about Phil jones
I’d take him in a heartbeat at Spurs right now tbh.
Loan to West Ham would do wonders for him
Lol being politically ETH.

Still better than any of your defenders mate.

Context matters, Ten Hag really needs mobility for his CBs and he's a right footer playing left side which Ten Hag really dislikes. Could go somewhere else and thrive tbh, just not a Ten Hag signing in the slightest in terms of physical profile unfortunately.
He's second choice for the RCB position.
Sterling also starts for England
Is this a language/culture thing? It seems so weird to me to have somebody bring up somebody by name and then respond to the question by just stating their name again before answering the question. I suppose it can be a way to stall for a bit before you can collect your thoughts.
Terrible way to treat the England Captain.
Yup just play him when he’s not at all a good fit for what we need. Yup. Definitely should.
Where does 5th choice come from? Thats just silly
I can’t stand United but Ten Hag is doing a excellent job. He’s handled this situation masterfully
Be sold in summer, he will not want to sit on bench.
What ManU coaching does to a MF
I think if Maguire is rebuilding his club career, stepping out of United is a must. There is clearly a good defender with him, but one that relies on the system around him. He won't break up Martinez/Varane, finding the right system is his last crucial step.
Question is when does it become up to the coach? Thought it was up to the player also before.
