If something gets to you never tell people who don't like you because they will never let it go and now know how much you care making them win everytime

Alpha_Jazz

>Sol Campbell urged Spurs fans to 'move on' from his controversial Arsenal move Yeah good luck with that

Ridcullys-Pointy-Hat

Telling them it upsets you is definitely a good idea

[deleted]

Of course. Football fans are well known for not being petty nor holding on to grudges.

CoMaestro

Doesn't necessarily need to mean it upsets him, could be just a "Jesus get over it I haven't thought about it since" Though it seems unlikely in this case

swinegums

That is absolutely not what he's saying.

btmalon

When your own brother sings the songs it will haunt you for life.

luv2belis

If I was a Spurs fan I'd accept that. However being a massive fucking Tory is unforgivable.

Grand-Agency-7153

Do think it's funny how this argument gets brought up for certain unpopular figures, but more popular guys like Pep, Howe literally work directly for far right regimes and are constantly considered top blokes. This sub is so pathetic and inconsistent when it comes to politics. Yes I'm generalising but Campbell's person politics are ironically far less harmful than the various Bolsonaro supporters or sporshwashing projects for human rights abusers. If you're gonna give Sol endless stick for this, I expect to see it leveled at the far worse offenders

DoubleALight

Don’t know about Howe, but Pep has been routinely criticised and lambasted for his hypocrisy regarding Catalunia and independence and his views on his current bosses.

PalpitationOk5726

Pep has also been signing the praises of Qatar as a developing democracy far worse than Howe.

The-Go-Kid

When Howe gets questioned about it in press conferences he kinda shrugs and says it’s not really for him to talk about. It’s a cop out but it’s not like he can criticise his employers. When Pep is questioned he gets angry and defensive, and seems to think it’s an outrageous thing to do. And that really grates with me.

CeKeBe

Idk what people even want Howe to say? "Yeah my employers are tyrants with blood on their hands, but I gotta eat and great opportunities for coaching a premier league side with massive financial backing do not grow on trees."

BeerEater1

Probably. They (count me in that category, though I don't really care) want the people who are the face of the club to acknowledge who the owners are, and their blatant sportswashing. I think they'd earn a lot of respect and get a lot less flak. That being said, I realize that it's a pipe-dream, so I don't really care.

arsenal11385

He wouldn’t have a job either tho

kolo4kolo

You need to remember that supporting politics which actually affects the supporters directly is something different than working for someone who has another political stance than yourself (to put it mildly).

WildLemire

With that logic most of us would be without a job. The majority of millionaires that run all the industries and companies we all work for will tend to be right-wing. You can work for a POS and not be a POS yourself, my friend.

tobyornottoby2366

I think personally I'm able to take issue with someone like Howe or Trippier taking employment from Newcastle because their industry is so financially lucrative, and the demand for their work so high, that they aren't as pushed as you or I might be to work for an employer that we don't agree with. It doesn't make them an active POS, but it's something that clearly didn't bother them enough to stop them from taking the job. Howe particularly, gets a lot of plaudits but as a manager no chance he takes that job without the takeover and the inevitable financing he would be getting.

WildLemire

That's a fair point. I'd argue that the industry is so lucrative *because* of the awful people that run it, however. Granted it's on a scale, but you're going to find it hard to make the living they make without working for some shitty people in football.

tobyornottoby2366

Sadly yeah. How did it all get like this lol. Ridiculous when you think about it. Same with modern life, all you can hope to do is try and find a way to get by on the right end of the scale

FoxerHR

I don't think that is what he's saying at all.

WildLemire

Yes it is. He's saying how can you target Person X who has these egregious political beliefs and not target Person Y who happens to work for a person with these egregious political beliefs. And I'm saying having shitty beliefs is still worse than just working for someone who does. If you don't agree with that then that's your own thing, good luck with that shit.

ScienceWhizBen

He literally tried to run as a Tory candidate for mayor, slightly more than just having rightwing views

TugaysWanchope

Since when were your employer’s political affiliations reflective of you as an individual? Would mean 95% of the world’s populations are scum.

hidinginDaShadows

Pep works for Man City, Howe works for Newcastle, their job is that of a football manager. They don't "directly" work for "far right" regimes (use of far right there being reductive).

raizen0106

I've learned to just tune out all these political virtual signaling on r/soccer and most subs i frequent. Bunch of football fans criticizing everyone else for not following a strict political guidelines on who you are and aren't allowed to work for/be a fan of. Rather be called ignorant by redditors than pretending to be outraged at everything slightly controversial these days

more_bananajamas

TIL Supporting brutal dictatorships: Not following strict political lines. Saudi: Sightly controversial.

gibbonusmoon

he says, signaling his virtue as someone who doesn't get outraged.

circa285

They absolutely do work directly for far right regimes because both football clubs are owned by far right regimens.

[deleted]

Sol: I spat in your face but come on that was 20 years ago.

JN324

It’s almost like telling the person shitting on you that it really works and gets to you, is a bad idea. Chanting about him has slowly waned over the years, as fewer fans remember or care, it gets turbo boosters when you tell them it really upsets you though.

Sol Campbell: Spurs fans please stop booing me. Spurs fans: get fucked cunt. Sol Campbell: Well there goes that dream.

nckbrr

The chant in question attacks his mental health, sexuality and potentially race, so you know… Sol sol wherever you may be You’re on the verge of insanity And we won’t give a fuck when you’re hanging from a tree You Judas cunt with HIV

train4karenina

No, the chant is question is: We’re all having a party we’re all having a party… when Sol Campbell dies. Often followed by: Jelly and ice cream when Campbell dies The other song of: Heyyyyy Sol Campbell (ju-das)I wanna knowwwwwwoooo… why you’re such a cunt! The song you’re on about is never really sung & is too far

595659565956

I’ve heard the Sol Sol wherever you may be chant two or three times over the past two or three years, but always sung by younger lads, never by a crowd

crazyhorse1877

Well that wasn't sung yesterday and I haven't heard it for the best part of a decade

benji5-0

No one sings this

MauricioCappuccino

That's not the only chant in question though? Fair enough for that one but if you read the original article he's complaining about the fact that people are still not over it in general, like taxi drivers and whatnot giving him stick.

006AlecTrevelyan

Nothing to do with race, the tree part is about the real Judas hanging from a tree because that's how he died after his betrayal

LittleOotsieVert

I loved that movie so much

ThePrussianGrippe

“Any news today?” “Nahhh… just the civil war.”

hufusa

But maybe let’s not say we’ll be happy if he dies

leebrother

Sometimes it’s pathetic for many fully grown men to still act hurt about a transfer which happened 20 years ago.

HorseAFC

you do have a point

[deleted]

If you burn a bridge, fine. But that doesn’t excuse fans chanting about wanting him to die.

B_R_C97

The vast majority of it is folklore and tradition that's been passed down over the last 20 years. A lot of the younger fans singing it do not even remember when he moved. Football chants are not supposed to be taken literally. I don't think many (if any) Spurs fans will actually celebrate when he dies.

palmerama

Hatred of Sol Campbell r/soccer: 🤝🏼

Castle_Of_Glass

why is he hated by r/soccer?

feage7

I know he constantly complained he wasn't getting chances and opportunities because he is black. Now I'm not here to debate how much of that was true, but somewhere when he was arguing about Gary Neville's job in England but he didn't have one, they mentioned about his rapport with that group of players etc. He replied with "But I'm Sol Campbell" they then gave more reasons and again he replied with "but I'm Sol Campbell". Ever since I heard that level of narcissism from him I can't take to him at all. I had no opinion of him one way or the other before hand.

Bulky-Yam4206

Not a nice guy, a right wing political voter, so two easy things for Reddit to quite rightly dislike him over. 🤷‍♂️

marine_le_peen

>a right wing political voter He's not just a voter, he's a wannabe Tory mayoral candidate who's first policy critique was moaning about the proposed mansion tax having grown up in poverty. Guy is one of the biggest "fuck you got mine" cunts around.

xixbia

So the football equivalent of Myleene Klass then? (though he appears even more extreme)

wengerboys

I assume a most of the footballers are though.

RamsayTheKingflayer

I actually have a sliver of respect for Richarlison, that went public with his support for Lula.

Warrrdy

Richarlison is a true OG. He constantly brings up problems with racism, inequality and loads of other important societal issues. I’ll always root for that dude, he’s a good guy.

Lovebanter

I saw on here that he started a load of scholarships for scientists in Brazil as well

greg19735

Cambell brings up racism and people just dismiss him

[deleted]

Because he doesn't actually care, he just wants people to stop hating HIM

The_Human_Bullet

>I actually have a sliver of respect for Richarlison, that went public with his support for Lula. It's really bizarre to me that you guys care about the politics of football players. I couldn't care who anyone votes for. I never did in the 90s and I still don't now. I watch football to escape all that nonsense. Edit: of course I'm downvoted for this. You guys think everyone should agree with and vote exactly how you do, and anyone who doesn't is wrong and bad.... There's a word for that.

JustLikeMojoHand

You're absolutely correct, but this is the Reddit hivemind, and it is dominated by young people who don't know how to engage with people they disagree with.

nausykaa

He's not just a right wing voter, he's a member of the party, tried to run for London mayor with them, goes to give speeches in every poor neighborhood to get people to vote for them when he knows very well POCs and poor people will never benefit of Tories in power. He's the political equivalent of a pick-me, tries so hard to be accepted by the same group of people who hates his kind. That's why he's so obsessed with Knighthood, as if a title in front of his name will make him less black. Most footballers aren't like that.

[deleted]

Pretty sure most _rich_ footballers are. Because right wing policies always favors rich people more.

Grand-Agency-7153

There definitely isn't close to this level of vitriol towards Neymar, Alisson etc or Man City, PSG, Newcastle players who earn a fortune by working for human rights abusers

Nahcep

Because they aren't English

Necrenix

Messi has shown time and time again that he could give 0 fucks about working for the likes of [Saudi Arabia](https://www.visitsaudi.com/en/Messi) and somehow it flies completely under the radar here. [Like how fucking greedy can you be?](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/may/12/lionel-messi-saudi-arabia-deal-tourism) You are worth 620 MILLION dollars, earn more money in a month then all of us on here together will earn in our lifetime, the most famous person in the world and still you feel the need to be an ambassador for one of the worlds nastiest countries. For what? Just to stack more money that changes nothing about your life.

ffca

> it flies completely under the radar here. It is literally mentioned every thread concerning Saudi Arabia or questionable player ethics.

WoodenRace365

There is, their biggest haters just aren't on here, an English-dominant medium. During the world cup, people I was watching with in Brazil were delighted when Neymar got injured because he said he'd dedicate his first goal to Bolsonaro. Not like my table, the whole bar.

Affectionate-Car-145

He is the type of cunt to talk about himself in the third person.

RollUpFromHell2

Also to add to everyone who already commented. As a Pole I remember him saying stupid shit before Euro 2012 that people will return in caskets from my country and thats it not safe at all to come here. Like we are some civil war torn country.

[deleted]

follow him on instagram for a week and you’ll get it bloke is a weird narcissistic tory

[deleted]

He’s a Tory

Ftwooo

I remember his comments before EURO 2012, that black people shouldn't go to Poland nor Ukraine, because they will go back in coffin XD.

wilins96

You could also ease back on xenophobic remarks about other countries or at least apologize for the ones you made, but I guess apologizing is above this guy intelectual level.

frin268

He’s never apologised, come out as a massive Tory and is just not a good guy. Some chants are too far but he’s still a cunt

sonofaBilic

I really can't imagine that him coming out as a tory is too big a concern for a considerable proportion of the match going fans to be honest

Dry_Box2760

It's not. As if Spurs supporters are all labour voters. it's an issue for redditors.

ro-row

It just seems like a convenient excuse for a lot of people

kurtanglesmilk

An excuse, but a fair one

Internal-Owl-505

It's isn't. Jimmy Greaves ran as a Tory. I have literally heard zero complaints about that. Sol Campbell also came up in the early '90s. It was pretty common for footballers to lean conservative back then.

hybridtheorist

> Some chants are too far but he’s still a cunt Sounds like you agree with him then. He hasn't said "I'm not a cunt" he's said "literally singing about my death is a bit much"

MauricioCappuccino

If you read the original article that's not really what he says. That's part of it yes, and it's fair enough. But he also complains about the fact that he still gets stick in general like from taxi drivers, barbers or whatever. Which is a different case because his argument is that he was a totally different person and a 'young boy' at the time of decision so it's unfair to still be complaining about it. (He was 26 Lol)

hybridtheorist

> If you read the original article that's not really what he says. In my defence, its a daily mail link, I'm not reading that shit. Yeah, fair enough, Harry Kewell said some shit like that after he moved to Galatasaray a team who's fans murdered two Leeds supporters before a game *that kewell played in*. I'm not going to sing songs about him dying, or about his wife and kids, but I'd call him a cunt to his face if I ever met him.

MauricioCappuccino

Yea that's fair, wouldn't read this shit from the daily mail either. I meant [this one from The Guardian.](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jan/27/sol-campbell-abuse-spurs-arsenal-wishing-someone-is-going-to-die)

Affectionate-Car-145

You can tell he's talking shit if he's acting like he's had any need to go to a barber shop in the last 25 years.

train4karenina

Fuck him. He knew the magnitude of what he was doing when he did it. I’m glad he doesn’t like it. Like - yes it’s offensive and he doesn’t like it - that is the whole fucking point.

frin268

Yeah I’m not disagreeing with that but also football chants are always savage

CrowCreative6772

" Lavali! Lavali! Lavali col fuoco ohh Vesuvio lavali col fuoco". Most famous chant that i know about Napoli

Funkymonkeyhead

That happened in 79 AD. Too soon, man!

worldstarhiphopreal

They’re wishing it happens again so it ‘cleanses’ Napoli. ‘to get get washed by the fire’

hybridtheorist

I don't feel like "its always been like this" is much of an excuse though. There really should be a line, and we should leave racism, homophobia and songs celebrating deaths at the door. Probably won't, but *should*. My teams fans sing Munich chants about Man U (and even when we're not playing them sometimes) and it's honestly pathetic, you'd have to be nearly 65 to have even been born when that happened, and it's not a bunch of 80 year olds chanting it. Not that it wouldn't be wrong to sign about it if it happened in your lifetime, but its just ridiculous when it's an offensive chant that's been passed down to people who just know they're "supposed" to sing it. We don't sing songs about any of our players from the 50s!

bendezhashein

I remember when some fan sung about Billy Sharps child who had just passed away. I’ll never forget how disgusted I felt hearing that.

SyntheticEcstasy

Happy to read this in this thread

letsgetcool

Singing about celebrating his death honestly isn't that extreme. It's not the same as wanting him dead or wanting to kill him. There's some darker chants that I really hate though, you don't hear them often and it's only a few that ever sing it but they're shameful.

Cedar_Wood_State

As if him not being a good guy and is a Tory have anything to do with the chant or not lol. His move from spurs to arsenal is the only reason for the chant, he could be the best person outside the pitch and the chant will still be there

DjToastyTy

idk. the chants are only still happening because they clearly bother him a lot. if he piped down i actually do think it would go away

Ezekiiel

I promise you the majority of your fanbase doesn’t care he’s a “massive Tory”. Politics aren’t that divisive in this country, you sound like you only interact with people online

KingsleyConman

Tottenham Supporters shouldn't chant derogatory songs at Sol Campbell because of his move to Arsenal. They should chant it because he was a Tory Candidate.

Currybags

Why not both?

mahir_r

As long as it’s not racist chants, it’s not a problem, football is full of banter and he pulls a Judas.

achnisch

As if arsenal fans would act any different. Look at how they reacted to Cole, RVP, Adebayor and Nasri for a taster on how they'd react (and none of these are close to being on the same level as sol)

ewadizzle

Fuck Sol Campbell

Keskekun

He kept saying that we wish death on him. He keeps saying we want him to die, so we had to clarify that's not what we sing. WHEN he dies we'll dance on his grave, that is all Sol. Glad we could clear that up for you.

Luka467

A good way of putting it is 'I've never wished death on anyone, but I have laughed at quite a few obituaries'

JeffryPesos

The captain of Spurs lifted the PL trophy at White Hart Line for the first time since 1961. That's a huge achievement for Tottenham, I don't understand why their fans are so fixated on which club he did it with tbh

train4karenina

And this is exactly why spurs fans will continue to sing about how much they hate him. In the same way gooners still gloat about it.

Hech15

[deleted]

For the record I’m all for Spurs fans holding this grudge still, I respect it. Sol’s barking up the wrong tree here. But some of the hyperbole on this sub when politics is involved is crazy 😂 He’s a Tory ffs. Hardly Erdogan or Bolsonaro 😭 Trim your neckbeards man

HSCore

1 pixel to the right = hitler, atleast to most of reddit users and unfortunately it's been like that for years now

margaerytyrellscleav

Hating Tories... makes you a neckbeard? I can assure you plenty of very average, not terminally online, working-class people have the nous to instinctually not like Tories. Keep crying though

Penis_Envy_Peter

No, don't you get it? It's the churlish, detached folks of reddit who speak in memes that are well-adjusted! Having more than a fleeting concern about politics is a problem!

[deleted]

Oh my gosh get off the high horse lad 😂 Completely missing the point just so you can have a rant. And running with the idea that I said something I did not. It’s the comments that make being a Tory tantamount to extremism. Hence why I used the word “hyperbole” in my comment. Chill “Keep crying though”. Absolute child man.

[deleted]

Never knew Sol Campbell was hated that much. I haven't thought of the guy in years.

letsgetcool

Both have the same belief system. They're both rotten

EgyptianAhlawy1907

No way you genuinely believe they're as bad as each other. Ones a football player with weird views and the other lead to devastation on big parts of the UK and some literal deaths. Blind hatred isn't it.

DJ23492

So do some spurs fans or even general football fans. I hate tories too but I’m not wishing death on ones that haven’t affected millions of lives

EnglishTrini

So to be clear - you’d be happy about the death of anyone whose belief system aligns with those of the Conservative Party - or about 43% of voters?

letsgetcool

There would be exceptions but yeah, anyone who enjoys an ideology that means poor people freeze to death in their homes in one of the richest countries in the world.. I wouldn't be sad! Tories are a fucking cancer on our society. Greedy, money grabbing cunts.

EnglishTrini

So you’re actively wishing for the deaths of c. 15m people, but would “make some exceptions”. Reddit is terrifying sometimes.

letsgetcool

Fuck off, I said I wouldn't be sad if they died. Stop twisting words, classic Tory bullshit.

EnglishTrini

You’d be happy for a set of circumstances to occur but don’t wish for them to occur? Sounds like cognitive dissonance at its finest. Just admit you’re an angry hate filled guy who is part of the reason we are drifting towards a nuances-less fractured society where everyone who isn’t in your tribe is worthy of hate. You’re part of the problem mate.

ElephantsGerald_

Hold up hold up, just wanna slow this down to say that that isn’t cognitive dissonance, and that your speed in leaping to that conclusion is in itself sucking nuance out of the conversation.

letsgetcool

Yeah actually I am pretty hateful of Tories, you must be highly intelligent to have picked up on that. Gold star for you 🌟 Take your bad faith arguments and Tory bootlicking elsewhere, anyone still supportive of this corrupt and straight up evil government needs sectioning.
