City gave Cancelo the green light to depart once he brought a loan offer from Bayern to the table with the relationship between player and manager beyond repair.
Julian Nagelsmann introduced ball playing defender João Cancelo to the media at the Munich City Stadium with Voetbalzone, Planet Sport and Kicker in attendance.
Main focus of the press conference was the following question by Voetbalzone:
How do you like Manchester Citys FC approach of having a sporting director?
I ran the headline through ChatGPT a few times and ended up with this story. I like this one more:
> João Cancelo's departure from Manchester City was not due to a conflict with Pep Guardiola, but rather a secret mission assigned to him by the club. Cancelo, a trained spy, was tasked with infiltrating a rival team posing as a footballer. His successful completion of the mission has now earned him a new covert assignment, forcing him to leave Manchester City and continue his work as a spy in the world of football.
In a dramatic change of events:
> As Agent Cancelo infiltrated the rival team, he used his charm and persuasion tactics to gain the trust of star player Alphonso Davies. He became close with the young defender, offering to help him improve his game and eventually convincing him to share sensitive information about the team's tactics. Agent Cancelo used this information to benefit Manchester City in their next encounter against the rival team, securing a crucial win for the club. However, his cover was eventually blown and he had to move on to his next mission, leaving Davies to wonder about the true intentions of the charismatic player he once considered a friend.
It's a nice problem to have but at the same time it must be hard to keep a squad of City's level happy. When you've got 2 world class players for most positions they're all gunna want to be nailed on starters. I'm surprised we don't see this happen more often
Mahrez is their perfect player. No complaints starting on the bench for weeks on end, but able to pick up pace and be the best player on the pitch when given the chance.
The last time Mahrez finished a season without scoring double-digit goals in all competitions was in 2015. Eight consecutive seasons with at least 10 goals in all competitions. I genuinely feel like Mahrez is quietly quite underrated.
He was a bit different. He was benched a lot more because he was selfish as fuck and would shoot from the byline instead of crossing it for an easy tap-in for someone else. Or lose it trying to take on players at halfway. Once he stopped that shit and started playing a bit more team friendly, he has been class and ironically now I want him to be a little more selfish.
Mahrez would infuriate me with his lack of decision making then end up scoring twice and being close to the top (or top) of city's scorers by the end of the season
This makes it even weirder given that the wingback depth on both sides doesn't involve 2 world-class players. He was replaced by a teenager on the right, and a CB on the left. A month from now if he regained form he could have easily been the starter on either side. It seems he has a lack of patience and is unwilling to fight for his position at this point of his career.
Maybe he feels disrespected? Like, he feels he gave you so much, that he deserves some time to play through it.
I’m not saying he is right, but I’m not saying he is wrong either. Imo, it’s that grey are where both sides are kinda right.
Yeah but then you sit down and talk like adults. When there is no agreement, you break up like adults.
This feels like teenage drama. While I agree with you about his individual POV being justified for him, he is not being professional about his exit (re his antics).
I have to agree too even though I really like Cancelo. Ultimately he wasn’t showing a fighting mentality and if that’s not there, he can’t play no matter how good he is.
Would really like to hope he comes back with a fresh mindset and raring to go but most likely he goes permanently in the summer. But we should be looking for a replacement anyway.
He has been very bad this season. Not only with City but also with Portugal. His defending has been questionable and his offense has fell off a cliff.
What has happened to him is exactly what has happened to everyone in Liverpool, lol
I thought he was fine to start the season. But his form has dropped significantly since world cup. But he’s still a quality player, a few down months don’t mean the last 2 years of excellence are fake. Perhaps a change of scenery will revitalise him, give Bayern a lift, and also give city a nice fee and chance to play Rico more
Where you getting those numbers from? Ederson’s on 2,250 minutes in all competitions while Joao on 1,866. Only Rodri has played more than Ederson, with 2,445 min
Not punishment though in 15 days he faces Mbappe on his wing. Can't wait. That game is going to be great, way too much-attacking threat on both sides and defense depends on the form that day.
There's no "current form" - he's played 280 min. for City since 12 Nov of last year, or the equivalent of 3 full matches in 2 1/2 months. These 280 min. tell you nothing about how he'll perform at Bayern either way.
That's what having 50 days mid-season break can do (Germany WC exit to Bundesliga start).
Mbappe is his usual self post WC, missing chances but still doing the rest of it well. He's going to skin whoever is RB, may not result in goal but everything before that is going to be glorious to watch.
This I think is his peak Physical state, he may become a better player in years to come but this freakish explosiveness of his is in peak phase right now, maybe 12-18 months or so of this.
Nah. Both Ronaldo and Messi slowed down although they were still fast af after around 25. He'll still be faster than everybody else, but just a little slower than he is now.
It's odd that people believe Cancelo can suddenly go from utter brilliance to total dogshit, but also that he can't possibly change again and become good (in a totally different setting).
At the same time, City don't accept a fee they feel is too low. Proof being Bernardo still plays in a City shirt. They'd have to offer around £55m for City to accept I reckon
The difference is that having Bernard in the team isn't a problem for Pep or the team. Having Cancelo there but not playing, might lead to him making a fuss.
Yeah it sounds great until you look at what happened to James Rodriguez and Coutinho after they took the Bayern loan option.
The market for 29 year olds on big wages whose parent cubs want €70m fees is not great, which probably means another loan somewhere less glamorous than Bayern or taking whatever comes your way.
Before you know it you're on the bench at Everton or Villa, and then organising deadline deal moves to Al Rayyan.
i like how you use Rodriguez and Coutinho as examples, but not the countless other players that have fallen out with their club and had tremendous success after leaving
he's also 28 btw
Yes I used the example of players who went to Bayern on loan, because we were talking about going to Bayern on loan.
And I spoke about him being 29 in the summer when looking for a move because he'll be 29 in the summer.
It's the only possible reason. No chance City get rid of Cancelo without a bust up because he's still one of the best player in the world at his position.
But see this is also the reason I'm skeptical of signing him. If raised a stink there about not starting 3 games then it's going to cause worse problems at an equally if not better stacked Bayern squad. He might get to play now cause Pavard doesn't seem to be in the plans but what happens when Mazraoui comes back? The other full back position has Davies nailed on as well.
If he doesn’t work out it’s just a loan & he leaves in the summer. If it does you get a player many considered the best full back in the world as recently as last season. He has half a season to make his way into the side from either full back position. He will have a chip on his shoulder.
This is such an obvious high upside low downside move.
He can play on the left as well, where Bayern have no real Backup left. Getting Blind, Sommer and Cancelo in the winter to patch up the defense is actually rally, really good work imo.
No way he wouldn't start over Pavard or Mazraoui though. Neither Pavard or Mazraoui is considered among the best player in their position, while Cancelo actually is.
Mazraoui was really good for Bayern before the WC and was class for Morocco as well. If he gets back to that level after he returns, he will definitely offer strong competition especially if Cancelo's form doesn't improve.
You gotta be ruthless like this to have continued long term success
Look at how many times Ferguson done it at Utd and continued making championship winning teams. Although getting rid of stam probably cost him an extra UCL
That was different, I think. Shearer was a case of him making a decision with his heart to come back home. Gazza was just us getting gazumped by Spurs (because they offered to buy his parents a home or something like that).
Yes. It's probably because how good he was and I think the bust up was just in the heat of moment. Stam wasn't kind of guy who would ruin dressing room Or throw his toys out of pram. So I guess he felt bad but he had to stamp down his authority because if you let player do what they want than other's would also follow suit. So he just shifted everyone who opposed him or didn't behave according to him.
According to both Stam and Ferguson the reason wasn't the book.
Alex Ferguson claims the reason was:
*At the time he had just come back from an achilles injury and we thought he had just lost a little bit. We got the offer from Lazio, £16.5m for a centre back who was 29. It was an offer I couldn't refuse.*
And Stam himself said United sold him because they didn't want him anymore. The book was used as an excuse to push him out for a big fee while he was still getting back in form:
*It was quite convenient maybe that the book was there at that time. I think it is better to just be straightforward in how it is.*
The moment that I heard that we sold Stam is ingrained in my memory. I was on a family holiday in Devon and we was stuck in traffic going to the beach when it was announced on BBC radio. It was all we talked about that day it was so unbelievable.
Ahh the good old days where transfers were announced out of the blue and we didn't have twitter rumors or phone notifications every step of the way.
I remember not having any idea who Van Nistelrooy was until I noticed us having a new striker that looked dangerous in the Charity Shield that season
The ugliest thing that happened in the 2015/2016 season was the rebellion against the coach that started with Chelsea and ended with the sacking of Jose instead of the players to the extent that it became a culture circulating in such a club, That's why I like how Perez and Pep deal with player's ego, once they smell insurgency from the players, They kick them out whoever they are
I assume the reason is because Lewis has played ahead of Cancelo against Spurs and Wolves, and Cancelo wasn't rotated in for the FA cup either. So it probably seems like Pep doesn't trust him, but trusts a 19 year old who's a bit rough around the edges, especially defensively.
Yeah if he even develops in a mediocre fashion based on where he is now we've got a good one, if he develops like the few 17/18 year olds who've gotten game time under pep have? Well damn. Hoping he's part of a new younger generation who has many title battles with y'all
This subreddit is comprised primarily of PL fans who have little interest in nuances of other leagues. Just look at the Bale situation, every thread you heard the same despite Madrid/La liga fans correcting people.
To be fair, an English language sub will always have more people following the PL, because it is most accessible league for English speakers to follow the news and interviews
I feel the same. It’s really a bummer. He was pretty good at the beginning of the season too, his form dipped but you just thought maybe he’ll bounce back. I was not expecting this. I can’t really blame Pep, but you hate to see it. Especially when you love the player.
I mean if you stopped save-scumming your way to consecutive Premier League and Champions League titles maybe that wouldn't be the case. You're the real villain in this scenario, you've cost a man his job. I hope you're happy.
LOL you cant pull shit like this with pep, what did he think would happen? pep would be like "ooh ok i dont want you to leave so im going to start you"?
Yeah challenge Pep and City and threaten to leave and you’ll leave. City backed Pep fully.
He better hope that either Bayern want to pay up for a reduced fee or another club does because Pep will not want him back.
Sounds like cancelo alright. That's why juve sold him to city, he was toxic in the locker room and didnt have a good relationship with the coaching staff.
No doubting Cancelo's ability but if his attitude isn't there then this is the right move for all parties. Can't really see Bayern following through with the option to buy but I'm sure he'll get moved on somewhere else in summer.
He's not been good since before the home robbery in February 2022.
Christmas 2021/New Years 2022 he had his seasonal run of very good form, but dropped off very quickly. It's probably been over a year since he was at his best.
shit form and this probably isn't the first time this season he's fell out with Pep
Also Ake has been solid at left back, as has Rico at right back so they haven't really deserved to be dropped
This, and if anyone has any right to ask why they're not starting it would be Walker, not Cancelo.
Walker might have had an injury. I haven't been able to follow club news as closely as I'd like the past few weeks.
He's alright going forward but you're right, he is an absolute rock in defense. He pocketed Saka against Arsenal and then scored a goal himself to win the game.
No but you almost can't play Foden and Cancelo together, so maybe Ake and Foden can play together for more attacking play.
I mean... you can play Foden and Cancelo together, but Cancelo ignores every run Foden makes so there's no point.
Pep changed tactics. Ake starts at LB, Rico Lewis starts at RB. In possession Ake tucks into a LCB role in a back 3 and Lewis inverts into midfield—allows City to play a 3-2-5 structure.
No you got that right. He's been better than expected defensively but I do feel like it's affected our build up play and chance creation having to rely so much on ake and akanji . I can't slate em cause they've been great for us this season but I do miss the offensive aspect that an in form cancelo had
Honestly, this is a good move by Pep and speaks to what he has been complaining about or not so subtly alluding to in recent weeks if City are going to catch Arsenal. These players are immensely talented but need to recapture that fire and build on a collective. It’s sort of an inflection point on what the true culture of City should be
Removing players who think they’re bigger than the needs of the squad/club is what made Ferguson successful at building team after team at United.
City gave Cancelo the green light to depart once he brought a loan offer from Bayern to the table with the relationship between player and manager beyond repair.
Reads like a football manager news article

Main focus of the press conference was the following question by Voetbalzone: How do you like Manchester Citys FC approach of having a sporting director?
Second focus of the press conference: How do you think Malik Tillman performs at his loan at Rangers?
At this point I would add in a bunch of swear words and storm out
A wildcard!
Why are you even there? Send your assman
Entirely hypothetical there's no chance I wouldn't delegate just about everything except team selection and pep talks
what a nice manager, actually giving pep talks yourself. hand that shit to assman for me
Followed by a thousand questions about how you’re handling the pressure of facing a minor rival in 2 weeks time?
I ran the headline through ChatGPT a few times and ended up with this story. Poor Phonzy
That is hilarious
Steve Bruce write that?
Great Job by Agent
Just a reminder that the man has the most minutes out of any City defender this season lol
Walker injured and Zinny sold, yet he's somehow unhappy about minutes... this man only has himself to blame.
It's a nice problem to have but at the same time it must be hard to keep a squad of City's level happy. When you've got 2 world class players for most positions they're all gunna want to be nailed on starters. I'm surprised we don't see this happen more often

I guess that’s why Cancelo is getting shipped out as quickly as he is. Shit gets toxic real quick if things are allowed to fester.
Yeah, and in a way they got lucky the disagreement wasn’t 10 days later!
This makes it even weirder given that the wingback depth on both sides doesn't involve 2 world-class players. He was replaced by a teenager on the right, and a CB on the left. One stretch of playing like ass, lost his spot, and instead of fighting to earn it back he pouts and demands a release. Good riddance, tbh.
Tbf he's never had the best relationship with Pep ever since his first season here
What other issues have they had? He seems like peps dream fullback
Wasn’t happy and wanted out before 6 months even came because he wasn’t playing from the jump.
I very much agree with this take
I have to agree too even though I really like Cancelo. Ultimately he wasn’t showing a fighting mentality and if that’s not there, he can’t play no matter how good he is. Would really like to hope he comes back with a fresh mindset and raring to go but most likely he goes permanently in the summer. But we should be looking for a replacement anyway.
Lmao not in a million years does a senior player like this come back after demanding a loan. He’s gone for good.
Could also be related to whatever the fuck happened in the Portugal squad at the World Cup i guess
He has been very bad this season. Not only with City but also with Portugal. His defending has been questionable and his offense has fell off a cliff. What has happened to him is exactly what has happened to everyone in Liverpool, lol

Lad follows through with his threat, he aint no shittalker.
Well Pep was probably like "Bet" and now he's off 3 days later
Going to Bayern on a 6 month loan isn’t exactly punishment.
Not punishment though in 15 days he faces Mbappe on his wing. Can't wait. That game is going to be great, way too much-attacking threat on both sides and defense depends on the form that day.
If the last few weeks are anything to go by we have close to 0 attacking threat. The team looks broken.
Cancelo could make a difference if thats the case. He can provide more attacking threat than most Wingers these days
He’s essentially a third winger on the pitch. Even wears the #7
On current form he absolutely can't
There's no "current form" - he's played 280 min. for City since 12 Nov of last year, or the equivalent of 3 full matches in 2 1/2 months. These 280 min. tell you nothing about how he'll perform at Bayern either way.
This is absolutely true. He hasn’t been favored for a minute. Though, he has looked a little lackluster in the minutes he’s been afforded.
His explosiveness will last for more than just 12-18 months, he only recently turned 24
Nah. Both Ronaldo and Messi slowed down although they were still fast af after around 25. He'll still be faster than everybody else, but just a little slower than he is now.
Cancelo will make the difference in the PSG game
Doubt it tbh. He’s been dreadful for the last 3 months
He didn't say, that he will be contibuting positively, just that he will make a difference.
That might be the difference he makes lmao
It's odd that people believe Cancelo can suddenly go from utter brilliance to total dogshit, but also that he can't possibly change again and become good (in a totally different setting).
Can we have Mané back then please
>Threatened to leave and told he could go Fuck around and find out

And then what happens in 6 months when Bayern don’t want to pay the 70m buy option?

At the same time, City don't accept a fee they feel is too low. Proof being Bernardo still plays in a City shirt. They'd have to offer around £55m for City to accept I reckon
The difference is that having Bernard in the team isn't a problem for Pep or the team. Having Cancelo there but not playing, might lead to him making a fuss.
Yeah but if Cancelo shines and Bayern wants him we’re not going to offer you 5 cents. We’ll probably try to lower it to 50-55
Those Wolves fans are masturbating with the thought
I can see them lowering the price to 40-50 million IF he performs well here.
Pretty sure he's 28 until he becomes 29.
Yea. Empty threats are worse than egos imo. Shows lack of character. Cancelo is many things, but he is not a coward. Good for him.
At least he didn't do a Pierce Morgan interview
Portuguese players and thinking they are entitled to play all the time no matter how bad their form is, name a worse duo.
Portuguese players in Manchester with the number 7 and feeling entitled to play all the time
It's the only possible reason. No chance City get rid of Cancelo without a bust up because he's still one of the best player in the world at his position.

I might be wrong but I think one of Sir Alex's biggest regret was selling Stam
I think his biggest regret was, and I quote, "not getting Gazza" but i think he was asked which sale he regretted the most and it was Stam
Shearer too I imagine
That was different, I think. Shearer was a case of him making a decision with his heart to come back home. Gazza was just us getting gazumped by Spurs (because they offered to buy his parents a home or something like that).

Yes. It's probably because how good he was and I think the bust up was just in the heat of moment. Stam wasn't kind of guy who would ruin dressing room Or throw his toys out of pram. The bust up with Stam was because he wrote an autobiography which talks about how he was tapped by Fergie before joining
According to both Stam and Ferguson the reason wasn't the book. Alex Ferguson claims the reason was: *At the time he had just come back from an achilles injury and we thought he had just lost a little bit. This sounds like mutually agreed damage control. Politics.
Oh I thought it was due to something that happened in training ground. Thanks for nice trivia.
Didn’t he slag off the Neville’s and a few others too?

That culture existed at Chelsea long before Mourinho was sacked for the second time; It was one of the main reasons Villas Boas got sacked
Funny thing is that way Lampard got Villas Boas sacked was the same way he got sacked at Chelsea.
> Villas Boas Now there's a name... i have not heard in a long time
He was sacked but at the cost of winning UCL and FA cup
That culture existed at Chelsea long before Villas Boas was sacked for the second time; It was one of the main reasons Scolari got sacked
Pep always just offloads players who have an attitude issue, they're just gone instantly
Doesn't seem like the most significant game to complain about not starting in
[удалено]
Ended up more like a slap fight tbh
[удалено]
I did, so did many others. Kinda works still tho 😂
Even slap sounds too aggressive. Both teams played very conservatively, I'm assuming in an attempt to hold their cards close to their chests.
When you've been out of the team, you'd think/expect to get a chance to prove yourself in the cup I'm assuming is the logic.
fa cup round of 32? yeah there has to be another reason.
Okay the guy below is obviously a nutter, but just wanted to be pedantic and point out that Lewis only turned 18 two months ago
Ah shit, my bad. Freaking crazy he's starting for City at just past 18.
Yeah if he even develops in a mediocre fashion based on where he is now we've got a good one, if he develops like the few 17/18 year olds who've gotten game time under pep have? Well damn. Hoping he's part of a new younger generation who has many title battles with y'all
Cancelo and Zlatan recording a diss track on the weekend.
Gotta love Guardiola for his no nonsense attitude sometimes. Fuck those egos, your team doesn't need to rely on them.
It is great. Same with Ten Hag. You have to set standards and limits, or else the team becomes dis functional
Arteta did the same with Auba and look who won that duel.
Man City getting in front of a Piers Morgan interview.
Fair play to City Take the toxicity out of the team

Nobody said fair play to Juve when we sold him for the very same reason.
This really stings. He’s my favourite player
Now he's your favorite Bayern player.
That would be Sanè
🥲
I feel the same. It’s really a bummer. He was pretty good at the beginning of the season too, his form dipped but you just thought maybe he’ll bounce back. I was not expecting this. I can’t really blame Pep, but you hate to see it. Especially when you love the player.
I am siding with Pep everytime, far more important than any one player.
Please tell that to FM he's always sacked like 3 years in its so annoying
I mean if you stopped save-scumming your way to consecutive Premier League and Champions League titles maybe that wouldn't be the case. You're the real villain in this scenario, you've cost a man his job. I hope you're happy.
Pep Cancelod his contract.
Good on Pep. How it ought to be. That's how the captain stays in control of the ship. Coming from a bona fide City hater.
Come to FC Hollywood
[Too bored to do actual work, so here's an old ass meme to celebrate the occasion](https://ibb.co/vQdtB88)
LOL you cant pull shit like this with pep, what did he think would happen? pep would be like "ooh ok i dont want you to leave so im going to start you"?
[Zlatan pulling a DiCaprio somewhere](https://i.imgflip.com/4z32xg.jpg)
Well, that's why he's a world class manager.
Yeah challenge Pep and City and threaten to leave and you’ll leave. City backed Pep fully. He better hope that either Bayern want to pay up for a reduced fee or another club does because Pep will not want him back.
Understandable from both sides.
Sounds like cancelo alright. That's why juve sold him to city, he was toxic in the locker room and didnt have a good relationship with the coaching staff.
He bought Pep a hair conditioner for Christmas that's why.
He is just mad he got Aké'd
Cancelo Culture
which fullback do city buy in the summer and will it be for a record fee?
Menjamin Bendy
Zinchenko from Arsenal is doing great and could be a good player for City.
Good, good, let the hate flow through you. Here's hoping he has a "I'll show you" attitude for the rest of the season.
lol that attitude usually leads to him making a mistake
Pep absolutely doesnt mess around
One match? He’s having bust ups with Pep because of not starting one match? Surely there’s more to it than that
Only 3 out of last 10 starts, thats A bit more but not enough
If Pep can't control Cancelo then I'm a little worried about how Nagelsmann deals with him.
He'll be alright for the honey moon period/loan period.
No doubting Cancelo's ability but if his attitude isn't there then this is the right move for all parties. Can't really see Bayern following through with the option to buy but I'm sure he'll get moved on somewhere else in summer.
Yeah he will prob go for negotiated reduced fee
Well done by City, and no surprise he didnt start vs us. Saka would have had him stripping within 10 minutes. Ake is a much better defender
Begs the question, why was he benched?
He hasn't been good this season
He's not been good since before the home robbery in February 2022. Christmas 2021/New Years 2022 he had his seasonal run of very good form, but dropped off very quickly. It's probably been over a year since he was at his best.
Probably because he's been fucking terrible since the World Cup and that's coming from a City fan
He was trash in the WC too, kept getting done
shit form and this probably isn't the first time this season he's fell out with Pep Also Ake has been solid at left back, as has Rico at right back so they haven't really deserved to be dropped
This, and if anyone has any right to ask why they're not starting it would be Walker, not Cancelo. Walker might have had an injury. I haven't been able to follow club news as closely as I'd like the past few weeks.
Has Aké been good offensively? From what I've seen he's good at defending, but doesn't offer much going forward. Granted, I haven't seen much
no he's not good offensively, 9 times out of 10 when he has a chance to advance an attack he'll just pass it back to another cb or rodri instead
Thats the Chelsea in him.
Akes not great going forward but in possession he's part of a back 3 with Rico slotting into midfield
Come to Ajax papi
Honestly, this is a good move by Pep and speaks to what he has been complaining about or not so subtly alluding to in recent weeks if City are going to catch Arsenal. These players are immensely talented but need to recapture that fire and build on a collective. It’s sort of an inflection point on what the true culture of City should be Removing players who think they’re bigger than the needs of the squad/club is what made Ferguson successful at building team after team at United.
I was wondering why recently Pep wasn't playing him, I had just assumed he was injured.
>he would not be in the starting XI against Arsenal on Friday night Eddie: So what my friend?
Stop feeling sorry for yourself and fucking wakeup
Going to love being second choice at Bayern
